We prove that if u is a weak solution to a constant coefficient system (with strong ellipticity assumed along the horizontal direction) in a Carnot group (no restriction on the step), then u is actually smooth. We then use this result to develop blow-up analysis to prove a partial regularity result for weak solutions of certain non-linear systems.
In this paper we establish a hypoellipticity result for second order linear operators comprised by a linear combination, with infinite vanishing coefficients, of subelliptic operators in separate spaces. This generalizes previous known results.
In a previous paper we considered a class of infinitely degenerate quasilinear equations and derived a priori bounds for high order derivatives of solutions in terms of the Lipschitz norm. We now show that it is possible to obtain bounds just in terms of the supremum norm for a further subclass of such equations, and we apply the resulting estimates to prove that continuous weak solutions are necessarily smooth. We also obtain existence, uniqueness and interior regularity of solutions for the Dirichlet problem with continuous boundary data.
We prove surface and volume mean value formulas for classical solutions to uniformly elliptic equations in divergence form with Hölder continuous coefficients. The kernels appearing in the integrals are supported on the level and superlevel sets of the fundamental solution relevant the adjoint differential operator. We then extend the aforementioned formulas to some subelliptic operators on Carnot groups. In this case we rely on the theory of finite perimeters on stratified Lie groups.
Let X_1,...,X_q be the basis of the space of horizontal vector fields on a homogeneous Carnot group in R^n (q<n). We consider a degenerate elliptic system of N equations, in divergence form, structured on these vector fields, where the coefficients a_{ab}^{ij} (i,j=1,2,...,q, a,b=1,2,...,N) are real valued bounded measurable functions defined in a bounded domain A of R^n, satisfying the strong Legendre condition and belonging to the space VMO_{loc}(A) (defined by the Carnot-Caratheodory distance induced by the X_i's). We prove interior HW^{1,p} estimates (2<p<\infty) for weak solutions to the …
This article is devoted to the study of the behavior of generalized entire solutions for a wide class of quasilinear degenerate inequalities modeled on the following prototype with p-Laplacian in the main part \begin{equation*} {\underset{m}{\overset{i=1}{\sum}}} X_i^*(|\mathbf{X}u|^{p-2} X_i u)\geq |u|^{q-2}u, \ \ x\in {\mathbb{R}}^{n},\ q>1,\ p>1, \end{equation*} where ${\mathbb{R}}^{n}$ is a Carnot-Carathéodory metric space, generated by the system of vector fields $\mathbf{X}=(X_1,X_2,..,X_m)$ and $X_i^*$ denotes the adjoint of $X_i$ with respect to Lebesgue measure. For the case where $p$…
In this paper we prove an invariant Harnack inequality on Carnot-Carathéodory balls for fractional powers of sub-Laplacians in Carnot groups. The proof relies on an "abstract" formulation of a technique recently introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre. In addition, we write explicitly the Poisson kernel for a class of degenerate subelliptic equations in product-type Carnot groups.
We simplify and give an alternative proof of hypoellipticity for generalizations of the singular sum of squares of complex vector fields studied by Kohn, with an appendix by Derridj and Tartakoff, in the Annals of Mathematics, vol. 162 no. 2, 2005, pp. 943-986. The main generalization is that the complex vector fields now come from domains of finite type. We also prove real analytic hypoellipticity and the optimality of our estimates.
In this paper we prove local analytic hypoellipticity for a degenerate sum of squares of complex vector fields generalizing those of Kohn in "Hypoellipticity and Loss of Derivatives". Kohn's article is to appear in the Annals of Mathematics with an appendix by Derridj and Tartakoff proving local analyticity in that case. Here we consider vector fields corresponding to a CR manifold of finite type so there is a kind of double degeneracy, and prove local analyticity using our balanced localization of high derivatives in the "missing" direction T. In a forthcoming paper, Bove, Derridj, Kohn and T…
We show the existence of continuous viscosity solutions to the equation describing the flow of a graph in the Carnot group G x R according to its horizontal Gauss curvature. In doing so, we prove a comparison principle for degenerate parabolic equations of the form u_t + F(D_0u, (D_0^2u)^*) = 0 for u defined on G.
For any Carnot group $\bf G$ and a bounded domain $Ω\subset \bf G$, we prove that viscosity solutions in $C(\bar\Om)$ of the fully nonlinear subelliptic equation $F(u,\nabla_h u, \nabla^2_h u)=0$ are unique when $F\in C(R\times R^m\times {\Cal S}(m))$ satisfies (i) $F$ is degenerate subelliptic and decreasing in $u$ or (ii) $F$ is uniformly subelliptic and nonincreasing in $u$. This extends Jensen's uniqueness theorem from the Euclidean space to the sub-Riemannian setting of the Carnot group.
The paper treats second order fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations having a family of subunit vector fields satisfying a full-rank bracket condition. It studies Liouville properties for viscosity sub- and supersolutions in the whole space, namely, that under a suitable bound at infinity from above and, respectively, from below, they must be constants. In a previous paper we proved an abstract result and discussed operators on the Heisenberg group. Here we consider various families of vector fields: the generators of a Carnot group, with more precise results for those of step 2, in par…
We prove Hölder continuous regularity of bounded, uniformly continuous, viscosity solutions of degenerate fully nonlinear equations defined in all of $\mathbb{R}^n$ space. In particular the result applies also to some operators in Carnot groups.
We introduce a new notion of Almgren's frequency which is adapted to solutions of a sub-Laplacian (harmonic functions) on a Carnot group of arbitrary step $\bG$. With this notion we investigate some new functionals associated with the frequency, and obtain monotonicity formulas for the relevant harmonic functions, or for the solutions of a closely connected class of degenerate second order operators of Baouendi type. The results proved in this paper provide some new insight into the deep link existing between the growth properties of the frequency, and the local and global structure of the rel…
The main result of the paper is on the continuity of weak solutions of infinitely degenerate quasilinear second order equations. Namely, we show that every weak solution to a certain class of degenerate quasilinear equations is continuous. More precisely, we show that it is Hölder continuous with respect to a certain metric associated to the operator. One of the essential features of this metric is that the metric balls are non doubling with respect to Lebesgue measure. The proof of the continuity together with a recent result by Rios et al. completes the result on hypoellipticity of a class o…
We prove uniqueness in law for possibly degenerate SDEs having a linear part in the drift term. Diffusion coefficients corresponding to non-degenerate directions of the noise are assumed to be continuous. When the diffusion part is constant we recover the classical degenerate Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process which only has to satisfy the Hörmander hypoellipticity condition. In the proof we use global $L^p$-estimates for hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators recently proved in Bramanti-Cupini-Lanconelli-Priola (Math. Z. 266 (2010)) and adapt the localization procedure introduced by Stroock and Va…
We introduce a notion of subunit vector field for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. We prove that an interior maximum of a viscosity subsolution of such an equation propagates along the trajectories of subunit vector fields. This implies strong maximum and minimum principles when the operator has a family of subunit vector fields satisfying the Hörmander condition. In particular these results hold for a large class of nonlinear subelliptic PDEs in Carnot groups. We prove also a strong comparison principle for degenerate elliptic equations that can be written in Hamilton-Jacobi-Bel…
We prove some Hardy type inequalities related to quasilinear second order degenerate elliptic differential operators L_p(u):=-\nabla_L^*(\abs{\nabla_L u}^{p-2}\nabla_L u). If ϕis a positive weight such that -L_pϕ>= 0, then the Hardy type inequality c\int_Ω\frac{\abs u^p}{ϕ^p}\abs{\nabla_L ϕ}^p dξ\le \int_Ω\abs{\nabla_L u}^p dξholds. We find an explicit value of the constant involved, which, in most cases, results optimal. As particular case we derive Hardy inequalities for subelliptic operators on Carnot Groups.
We study the regularity properties of the second order linear operator in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$: \begin{equation*} \mathscr{L} u := \sum_{j,k= 1}^{m} a_{jk}\partial_{x_j x_k}^2 u + \sum_{j,k= 1}^{N} b_{jk}x_k \partial_{x_j} u - \partial_t u, \end{equation*} where $A = \left( a_{jk} \right)_{j,k= 1, \dots, m}, B= \left( b_{jk} \right)_{j,k= 1, \dots, N}$ are real valued matrices with constant coefficients, with $A$ symmetric and strictly positive. We prove that, if the operator $\mathscr{L}$ satisfies Hörmander's hypoellipticity condition, and $f$ is a Dini continuous function, then the second ord…
We consider a possibly degenerate Kolmogorov-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator of the form L = Tr(BD 2) + Az, D , where A, B are N x N matrices, z $\in$ R N , N $\ge$ 1, which satisfy the Kalman condition which is equivalent to the hypoellipticity condition. We prove the following stability result: the Schauder and Sobolev estimates associated with the corresponding parabolic Cauchy problem remain valid, with the same constant, for the parabolic Cauchy problem associated with a second order perturbation of L, namely for L + Tr(S(t)D 2) where S(t) is a non-negative N x N matrix depending continuously…
This paper is on $Γ$-convergence for degenerate integral functionals related to homogenisation problems in the Heisenberg group. Here both the rescaling and the notion of invariance or periodicity are chosen in a way motivated by the geometry of the Heisenberg group. Without using special geometric features, these functionals would be neither coercive nor periodic, so classic results do not apply. All the results apply to the more general case of Carnot groups.
It is well-known under the name of `periodic homogenization' that, under a centering condition of the drift, a periodic diffusion process on R^d converges, under diffusive rescaling, to a d-dimensional Brownian motion. Existing proofs of this result all rely on uniform ellipticity or hypoellipticity assumptions on the diffusion. In this paper, we considerably weaken these assumptions in order to allow for the diffusion coefficient to even vanish on an open set. As a consequence, it is no longer the case that the effective diffusivity matrix is necessarily non-degenerate. It turns out that, pro…
In this paper we study various Hardy inequalities in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, w.r.t. the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $δ$ from the origin. We firstly show that the optimal constant for the Hardy inequality is strictly smaller than $n^2 = (Q-2)^2/4$, where $Q$ is the homogenous dimension. Then, we prove that, independently of $n$, the Heisenberg group does not support a radial Hardy inequality, i.e., a Hardy inequality where the gradient term is replaced by its projection along $\nabla_{\mathbb H}δ$. This is in stark contrast with the Euclidean case, where the radial Hardy inequality…
