Let F be a field of characteristic not 2 and assume all algebras are over F. We establish several conjugacy theorems for the special linear Lie algebra sl_2 over an F-algebra which is a UFD. We find the structure of the full automorphism group as well as conditions for when two such algebras are isomorphic. We also study the structure of their derivation algebras. Often we work with more general coordinates when this if feasible.
This paper deals with the problem of conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Unlike the methods used by Peterson and Kac, our approach is entirely cohomological and geometric. It is deeply rooted on the theory of reductive group schemes developed by Demazure and Grothendieck, and on the work of J. Tits on buildings.
We establish the conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for generic Lie tori "of type A". This is the only conjugacy problem of Lie tori related to Extended Affine Lie Algebras that remained open.
We introduce an algorithm to decide isomorphism between tensors. The algorithm uses the Lie algebra of derivations of a tensor to compress the space in which the search takes place to a so-called densor space. To make the method practicable we give a polynomial-time algorithm to solve a generalization of module isomorphism for a common class of Lie modules. As a consequence, we show that isomorphism testing is in polynomial time for tensors whose derivation algebras are classical Lie algebras and whose densor spaces are 1-dimensional. The method has been implemented in the Magma computer algeb…
The purpose of this paper is to consider when two maximal subalgebras of a finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebra $L$ are conjugate, and to investigate their intersection.
We extend conjugacy results from Lie algebras to their Leibniz algebra generalizations. The proofs in the Lie case depend on anti-commutativity. Thus it is necessary to find other paths in the Leibniz case. Some of these results involve Cartan subalgebras. Our results can be used to extend other results on Cartan subalgebras. We show an example here and others will be shown in future work.
We establish the conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for extended affine Lie algebras whose centreless core is "of type A", i.e., matrices over a quantum torus Q whose trace lies in the commutator space of Q. This settles the last outstanding part of the conjugacy problem for Extended Affine Lie Algebras that remained open.
That finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers can be classified by means of purely combinatorial and geometric objects such as Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams and indecomposable irreducible root systems, is arguably one of the most elegant results in mathematics. The definition of the root system is done by fixing a Cartan subalgebra of the given Lie algebra. The remarkable fact is that (up to isomorphism) this construction is independent of the choice of the Cartan subalgebra. The modern way of establishing this fact is by showing that all Cartan subalgebras are conjugate. For …
The conjugacy of split Cartan subalgebras in the finite dimensional simple case (Chevalley) and in the symmetrizable Kac-Moody case (Peterson-Kac) are fundamental results of the theory of Lie algebras. Among the Kac-Moody Lie algebras the affine algebras stand out. This paper deals with the problem of conjugacy for a class of algebras --extended affine Lie algebras-- that are in a precise sense higher nullity analogues of the affine algebras. Unlike the methods used by Peterson-Kac, our approach is entirely cohomological and geometric. It is deeply rooted on the theory of reductive group schem…
In the present work the properties of Cartan subalgebras and their connection with regular elements in finite dimensional Lie algebras are extended to the case of Leibniz algebras. It is shown that Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Leibniz algebra correspond to Cartan subalgebras and regular elements of a Lie algebra by a natural homomorphism. Conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras of Leibniz algebras is shown.
We define and classify the analogues of the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras for the ring corresponding to the complex projective line minus three points. The classification is given in terms of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants. We also study the question of conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for these algebras.
We determine those k-tuples of conjugacy classes of matrices, from which it is possible to choose matrices which have no common invariant subspace and have sum zero. This is an additive version of the Deligne-Simpson problem. We deduce the result from earlier work of ours on preprojective algebras and the moment map for representations of quivers. Our answer depends on the root system for a Kac-Moody Lie algebra.
We describe recent work on preprojective algebras and moduli spaces of their representations. We give an analogue of Kac's Theorem, characterizing the dimension types of indecomposable coherent sheaves over weighted projective lines in terms of loop algebras of Kac-Moody Lie algebras, and explain how it is proved using Hall algebras. We discuss applications to the problem of describing the possible conjugacy classes of sums and products of matrices in known conjugacy classes.
We study the possible dimension vectors of indecomposable parabolic bundles on the projective line, and use our answer to solve the problem of characterizing those collections of conjugacy classes of n by n matrices for which one can find matrices in their closures whose product is equal to the identity matrix. Both answers depend on the root system of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra. Our proofs use Ringel's theory of tubular algebras, work of Mihai on the existence of logarithmic connections, the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and an algebraic version, due to Dettweiler and Reiter, of Katz's middle c…
In this paper we study a Lie-theoretic analogue of a generalisation of the prefrattini subgroups introduced by W. Gaschütz. The approach follows that of P. Hauck and H. Kurtzweil for groups, by first considering complements in subalgebra intervals. Conjugacy of these subalgebras is established for a large class of solvable lie algebras.
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$, and $\ggg$ the $p$-dimensional Witt algebra over $\mathbb{F}$. Let $\N$ be the nilpotent cone of $\ggg$. Explicit description of $\N$ is given, so that the conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras of $\ggg$ under the automorphism group are determined. In contrast with only one conjugacy class of Borel subalgebras in a classical simple Lie algebra, there are two conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras in $\ggg$. The representatives of conjugacy classes of Borel subalgebras, i.e., the so-called standard Borel subalgebras, ar…
Let M_n be the class of all multiloop algebras of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras relative to n-tuples of commuting finite order automorphisms. It is a classical result that M_1 is the class of all derived algebras modulo their centres of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. This combined with the Peterson-Kac conjugacy theorem for affine algebras results in a classification of the algebras in M_1. In this paper, we classify the algebras in M_2, and further determine the relationship between M_2 and two other classes of Lie algebras: the class of all loop algebras of affine Lie algebras and t…
A Lie algebra over a field of characteristic 0 splits over its soluble radical and all complements are conjugate. I show that the splitting theorem extends to Leibniz algebras but that the conjugacy theorem does not.
We characterize H-like Lie algebras in terms of subspaces of cones over conjugacy classes in $\mathfrak{so}(\mathbb{R}^q)$, translating the classification problem for H-like Lie algebras to an equivalent problem in linear algebra. We study properties of H-like Lie algebras, present new methods for constructing them, including tensor products and central sums, and classify H-like Lie algebras whose associated $J_Z$-maps have rank two for all nonzero $Z$.
All algebras in a very large, axiomatically defined class of quantum nilpotent algebras are proved to possess quantum cluster algebra structures under mild conditions. Furthermore, it is shown that these quantum cluster algebras always equal the corresponding upper quantum cluster algebras. Previous approaches to these problems for the construction of (quantum) cluster algebra structures on (quantized) coordinate rings arising in Lie theory were done on a case by case basis relying on the combinatorics of each concrete family. The results of the paper have a broad range of applications to thes…
In the present work we investigate a subgroup $I_n$ of the McCool group $M_n$. We show that $I_n$ has solvable conjugacy problem. Next, we investigate its Lie Algebra gr($I_n$) and we find a presentation for it. Finally we show that gr($I_n$) is naturally embedded into the Andreadakis-Johnson Lie Algebra of the IA automorphisms of the free group $F_n$.
In the present work we introduce notions such as $k$-solvability, $s$- and $K_1$-nilpotency and the corresponding radicals. We prove that these radicals are invariant under derivations of Leibniz $n$-algebras. The Frattini and Cartan subalgebras of Leibniz $n$-algebras are studied. In particular, we construct examples that show that a classical result on conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras of Lie algebras, which also holds in Leibniz algebras and Lie $n$-algebras, is not true for Leibniz $n$-algebras.
The main purpose of this paper is to study the finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras described in its title, which we call {\em minimal non-${\mathcal N}$}. To facilitate this we investigate solvable Lie algebras of nilpotent length $k$, and of nilpotent length $\leq k$, and {\em extreme} Lie algebras, which have the property that their nilpotent length is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subalgebras. We characterise the minimal non-${\mathcal N}$ Lie algebras in which every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian, and those of solvability index $\leq 3$.
Let $G$ be an exceptional simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ and suppose that the characteristic $p$ of $k$ is a good prime for $G$. In this paper we classify the maximal Lie subalgebras $\mathfrak{m}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. Specifically, we show that one of the following holds: $\mathfrak{m}={\rm Lie}(M)$ for some maximal connected subgroup $M$ of $G$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal Witt subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal $\it{\mbox{exotic semidirect product}}$. The conjugacy classes of maximal connected subgroups o…
We describe a construction of an algebra over the field of order 2 starting from a conjugacy class of 3-transpositions in a group. In particular, we determine which simple Lie algebras arise by this construction. Among other things, this construction yields a natural embedding of the sporadic simple group $\Fi{22}$ in the group $^2E_6(2)$.
