The aim of this article is to show that p-adic geometry of modular curves is useful in the study of p-adic properties of traces of singular moduli. In order to do so, we partly answer a question by Ono. As our goal is just to illustrate how p-adic geometry can be used in this context, we focus on a relatively simple case, in the hope that others will try to obtain the strongest and most general results. For example, for p=2, a result stronger than Thm.1 is proved in [Boylan], and a result on some modular curves of genus zero can be found in [Osburn] . It should be easy to apply our method, because of its local nature, to modular curves of arbitrary level, as well as to Shimura curves.
We prove the Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture by Hausel-Thaddeus for smooth moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of type $\operatorname{SL}_n$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_n$. More precisely, we establish an equality of stringy Hodge numbers for certain pairs of algebraic orbifolds generically fibred into dual abelian varieties. Our proof utilises p-adic integration relative to the fibres, and interprets canonical gerbes present on these moduli spaces as characters on the Hitchin fibres using Tate duality. Furthermore we prove for $d$ coprime to $n$, that the number of rank $n$ Higgs bundles of deg…
The goal of this paper is to study a $p$-adic analog of the joint of the conjectures of André--Oort and André--Pink. More precisely, on a product of ordinary Siegel formal moduli schemes, we study the distribution of points whose components are either CM points or points in Hecke orbits. We use linearity of formal subschemes of the product as the $p$-adic analog of geodesicness over complex numbers. Moreover, we relax the usual incidence relations by using $p$-adic distance. We also study a $p$-adic formal scheme theoretic analog of the Ax--Lindemann theorem.
We generalize the surjectivity result of the $p$-adic monodromy for the ordinary locus of a Siegel moduli space by Faltings and Chai (independently by Ekedahl) to that for any $p$-rank stratum. We discuss irreducibility and connectedness of some $p$-rank strata of the moduli spaces with parahoric level structure. Finer results are obtained on the Siegel 3-fold with Iwahori level structure.
We determine the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology and the eigenvalues of the geometric Frobenius for the moduli stack $\mathcal{L}_{1,12n} := \mathrm{Hom}_{n}(\mathbb{P}^1, \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,1})$ of stable elliptic fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with $12n$ nodal singular fibers and a marked Weierstrass section over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ with $\mathrm{char}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q) \neq 2,3$.
We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the complex-analytic method.
We show that the Deligne formal model of the Drinfeld p-adic halfplane relative to a non-archimedean local field F represents a moduli problem of polarized O_F-modules with an action of the ring of integers O_E in a quadratic extension E of F. The proof proceeds by establishing a comparison isomorphism with the Drinfeld moduli problem. This isomorphism reflects the accidental isomorphism of SL_2(F) and SU(C)(F) for a two-dimensional split hermitian space C for E/F.
We will introduce a regularization for $p$-adic multiple zeta values and show that the generalized double shuffle relations hold. This settles a question raised by Deligne, given as a project in Arizona winter school 2002. Our approach is to use the theory of Coleman functions on the moduli space of genus zero curves with marked points and its compactification. The main ingredients are the analytic continuation of Coleman functions to the normal bundle of divisors at infinity and definition of a special tangential base point on the moduli space.
We compute the image of the $p$-adic period map for polarized K3 surfaces with supersingular reduction. This gives rise to a Rapoport-Zink type uniformization of their moduli space by an explicit open rigid analytic subvariety of a local Shimura variety of orthogonal type. In contrast to the case of Rapoport-Zink uniformization of Shimura varieties and in analogy to the complex case, the uniformizing domain does not carry an action of a $p$-adic Lie group, but only of a discrete subgroup. We briefly sketch how the same arguments can be applied to obtain a uniformization for the moduli space of…
Rigid meromorphic cocycles were introduced by Darmon and Vonk as a conjectural $p$-adic extension of the theory of singular moduli to real quadratic base fields. They are certain cohomology classes of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ which can be evaluated at real quadratic irrationalities and the values thus obtained are conjectured to lie in algebraic extensions of the base field. In this article we present a similar construction of cohomology casses in which $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ is replaced by an order in an indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field $F$. The…
We discuss recent developments in $p$-adic geometry, ranging from foundational results such as the degeneration of the Hodge-to-de Rham spectral sequence for "compact $p$-adic manifolds" over new period maps on moduli spaces of abelian varieties to applications to the local and global Langlands conjectures, and the construction of "universal" $p$-adic cohomology theories. We finish with some speculations on how a theory that combines all primes $p$, including the archimedean prime, might look like.
Recently S. Patrikis, J.F. Voloch and Y. Zarhin have proven, assuming several well known conjectures, that the finite descent obstruction holds on the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties. We show an analogous result for K3 surfaces, under some technical restrictions. This is possible since abelian varieties and K3s are quite well described by `Hodge-theoretical' results. In particular the theorem we present can be interpreted as follows: a family of $\ell$-adic representations that looks like the one induced by the transcendental part of the $\ell$-adic cohomology of a K3 s…
Let $p \geq 2$ be a prime number and let $\mathbb{C}_p$ be the completion of an algebraic closure of the $p$-adic rational field $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Let $f_c(z)$ be a one-parameter family of rational functions of degree $d\geq 2$, where the coefficients are meromorphic functions defined at all parameters $c$ in some open disk $D\subseteq\mathbb{C}_p$. Assuming an appropriate stability condition, we prove that the parameters $c$ for which $f_c$ is postcritically finite (PCF) are isolated from one another in the $p$-adic disk $D$, except in certain trivial cases. In particular, all PCF parameters of…
We study Hilbert modular forms in characteristic $p$ and over $p$-adic rings. In the characteristic $p$-theory we describe the kernel and image of the $q$-expansion map and prove the existence of filtration for Hilbert modular forms; we define operators $U$, $V$ and $Θ_χ$ and study the variation of the filtration under these operators. In particular, we prove that every ordinary eigenform has filtration in a prescribed box of weights. Our methods are geometric -- comparing holomorphic Hilbert modular forms with rational functions on a moduli scheme with level-$p$ structure, whose poles are sup…
We construct and study the moduli of continuous representations of a profinite group with integral $p$-adic coefficients. We present this moduli space over the moduli space of continuous pseudorepresentations and show that this morphism is algebraizable. When this profinite group is the absolute Galois group of a $p$-adic local field, we show that these moduli spaces admit Zariski-closed loci cutting out Galois representations that are potentially semi-stable with bounded Hodge-Tate weights and a given Hodge and Galois type. As a consequence, we show that these loci descend to the universal de…
Given two arbitrary vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve, we give an explicit criterion in terms of Harder-Narasimhan polygons on whether they realize a semistable vector bundle as their extensions. Our argument is largely combinatorial and builds upon the dimension analysis of certain moduli spaces of bundle maps developed in [BFH+22].
In this paper, we seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics, i.e. a characterization, in terms of geometry mod p, of curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curves over the complex field. Specifically, we study the liftablity of a curve in moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties over k, char k=p. We show that some conditions on the l-adic monodromy over such a curve imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
We study the field of moduli of singular abelian and K3 surfaces. We discuss both the field of moduli over the CM field and over $\Q$. We also discuss non-finiteness with respect to the degree of the field of moduli. Finally, we provide an explicit approach to the computation of the field of moduli.
Given a singular modulus $j_0$ and a set of rational primes $S$, we study the problem of effectively determining the set of singular moduli $j$ such that $j-j_0$ is an $S$-unit. For every $j_0 \neq 0$, we provide an effective way of finding this set for infinitely many choices of $S$. The same is true if $j_0=0$ and we assume the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Certain numerical experiments will also lead to the formulation of a "uniformity conjecture" for singular $S$-units.
Recently Yu. Bilu, P. Habegger and L. Kühne proved that no singular modulus can be a unit in the ring of algebraic integers. In this paper we study for which sets S of prime numbers there is no singular modulus that is an S-units. Here we prove that when the set S contains only primes congruent to 1 modulo 3 then no singular modulus can be an S-unit. We then give some remarks on the general case and we study the norm factorizations of a special family of singular moduli.
The aim of the present paper is to provide a new aspect of the $p$-adic Teichmüller theory established by S. Mochizuki. We study the symplectic geometry of the $p$-adic formal stacks $\widehat{\mathcal{M}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}$ (= the moduli classifying $p$-adic formal curves of fixed genus $g>1$) and $\widehat{\mathcal{S}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}$ (= the moduli classifying $p$-adic formal curves of genus $g$ equipped with an indigenous bundle). A major achievement in the (classical) $p$-adic Teichmüller theory is the construction of the locus $\widehat{\mathcal{N}}_{g, \mathbb{Z}_p}^{\mathrm{ord}}$ in…
We compute the Z/\ell and \ell-adic monodromy of every irreducible component of the moduli space M_g^f of curves of genus and and p-rank f. In particular, we prove that the Z/\ell-monodromy of every component of M_g^f is the symplectic group Sp_{2g}(Z/\ell) if g>=3 and \ell is a prime distinct from p. We give applications to the generic behavior of automorphism groups, Jacobians, class groups, and zeta functions of curves of given genus and p-rank.
Following a suggestion of Peter Scholze, we construct an action of $\hat{\mathbb{G}}_m$ on the Katz moduli problem, a profinite-étale cover of the ordinary locus of the $p$-adic modular curve whose ring of functions is Serre's space of $p$-adic modular functions. This action is a local, $p$-adic analog of a global, archimedean action of the circle group $S^1$ on the lattice-unstable locus of the modular curve over $\mathbb{C}$. To construct the $\hat{\mathbb{G}}_m$-action, we descend a moduli-theoretic action of a larger group on the (big) ordinary Igusa variety of Caraiani-Scholze. We compute…
In the relative trace formula approach to the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, we formulate a local conjecture (arithmetic transfer) in the case of an exotic smooth formal moduli space of p-divisible groups, associated to a unitary group relative to a ramified quadratic extension of a p-adic field. We prove our conjecture in the case of a unitary group in three variables.
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
In this paper we study special bases of certain spaces of half-integral weight weakly holomorphic modular forms. We establish a criterion for the integrality of Fourier coefficients of such bases. By using recursive relations between Hecke operators, we derive relations of Fourier coefficients of each basis element and obtain congruences of the Fourier coefficients, which extend known congruences for traces of singular moduli.
We give the p-adic and F_q((t)) analogue of the real van der Corput Lemma, where the real condition of sufficient smoothness for the phase is replaced by the condition that the phase is a convergent power series. This van der Corput style result allows us, in analogy to the real situation, to study singular Fourier transforms on suitably curved (analytic) manifolds and opens the way for further applications. As one such further application we give the restriction theorem for Fourier transforms of L^p functions to suitably curved analytic manifolds over non-archimedean local fields, similar to …
We address a question posed by Ono, prove a general result for powers of an arbitrary prime, and provide an explanation for the appearance of higher congruence moduli for certain small primes. One of our results coincides with a recent result of Edixhoven, and we hope that the comparison of the methods, which are entirely different, may reveal a connection between the p-adic geometry and the arithmetic of half-integral weight Hecke operators.
Given a properly normalized parametrization of a genus-0 modular curve, the complex multiplication points map to algebraic numbers called singular moduli. In the classical case, the maps can be given analytically. However, in the Shimura curve cases, no such analytical expansion is possible. Fortunately, in both cases there are known algorithms for algebraically computing the rational norms of the singular moduli. We demonstrate a method of using these norm algorithms to algebraically determine the minimal polynomial of the singular moduli below a discriminant threshold. We then use these mini…
We show that the field $\mathbb{Q}(x,y)$, generated by two singular moduli~$x$ and~$y$, is generated by their sum ${x+y}$, unless~$x$ and~$y$ are conjugate over~$\mathbb{Q}$, in which case ${x+y}$ generates a subfield of degree at most~$2$. We obtain a similar result for the product of two singular moduli.
We treat two different equations involving powers of singular moduli. On the one hand, we show that, with two possible (explicitly specified) exceptions, two distinct singular moduli j(τ),j(τ') such that the numbers 1, j(τ)^m and j(τ')^n are linearly dependent over $\mathbb{Q}$ for some positive integers m,n, must be of degree at most 2. On the other hand, we show that, with obvious exceptions, the product of any two powers of singular moduli cannot be a non-zero rational number.
Zagier proved that the generating series for the traces of singular moduli is a \textit{weakly holomorphic} modular form of weight 3/2 on $Γ_0(4)$. Bruinier and Funke extended the results of Zagier to modular curves of arbitrary genus. Zagier also showed that the twisted traces of singular moduli are generated by a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. In this paper, we study the extension of Zagier's result for the twisted traces of singular moduli to congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$. As an application, we study congruences for the twisted traces of singular moduli of weakly holomorphic…
Properties of the set $T_s$ of "particularly non-normal numbers" of the unit interval are studied in details ($T_s$ consists of real numbers $x$, some of whose s-adic digits have the asymptotic frequencies in the nonterminating $s-$ adic expansion of $x$, and some do not). It is proven that the set $T_s$ is residual in the topological sense (i.e., it is of the first Baire category) and it is generic in the sense of fractal geometry ($T_s$ is a superfractal set, i.e., its Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension is equal to~1). A topological and fractal classification of sets of real numbers via analysi…
We construct moduli stacks of two-dimensional mod p representations of the absolute Galois group of a p-adic local field, as well as their resolutions by moduli stacks of two-dimensional Breuil-Kisin modules with tame descent data. We study the local geometry of these moduli stacks by comparing them with local models of Shimura varieties at hyperspecial and Iwahori level.
By adopting a new approach to the analysis of the density of p-adic solutions arising in applications of the circle method, we show that under modest conditions the existence of non-trivial p-adic solutions suffices to establish positivity of the singular series. This improves on earlier approaches due to Davenport, Schmidt and others, and allows us to establish an asymptotic formula for the number of simultaneous zeros of non-singular pairs of cubic forms in at least 131 variables. As a by-product, we obtain a version of Hensel's Lemma for linear spaces.
We extend a result of Ahlgren and Ono on congruences for traces of singular moduli of level 1 to traces defined in terms of Hauptmodul associated to certain groups of genus 0 of higher levels.
We will generalize Osburn's work about a congruence for traces defined in terms of Hauptmodul associated to certain genus zero groups of higher levels.
