We investigate the problem of computing tensor product multiplicities for complex semisimple Lie algebras. Even though computing these numbers is #P-hard in general, we show that if the rank of the Lie algebra is assumed fixed, then there is a polynomial time algorithm, based on counting the lattice points in polytopes. In fact, for Lie algebras of type A_r, there is an algorithm, based on the ellipsoid algorithm, to decide when the coefficients are nonzero in polynomial time for arbitrary rank. Our experiments show that the lattice point algorithm is superior in practice to the standard techniques for computing multiplicities when the weights have large entries but small rank. Using an implementation of this algorithm, we provide experimental evidence for conjectured generalizations of the saturation property of Littlewood--Richardson coefficients. One of these conjectures seems to be valid for types B_n, C_n, and D_n.
The category of modules over a string algebra is equipped with a tensor product defined point-wise and arrow-wise in terms of the underlying quiver. In the present article we investigate how this tensor product interacts with the classification of indecomposables. We apply the results obtained to solve the Clebsch-Gordan problem for string algebras. Moreover, we describe the corresponding representation ring and tensor ideals in the module category.
A theory of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for $SL(2, C)$ is given using only rational numbers. Features include orthogonality relations, recurrence relations, and Regge's symmetry group. Results follow from elementary representation theory and properties of binomial coefficients. A computational algorithm is given based on Pascal's recurrence.
Let $G$ be the special linear group of degree $2$ over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $E$ be the natural module and $S^rE$ the $r$th symmetric power. We consider here, for $r,s\geq 0$, the tensor product of $S^rE$ and the dual of $S^sE$. In characteristic zero this tensor product decomposes according to the Clebsch-Gordan formula. We consider here the situation when $K$ is a field of positive characteristic. We show that each indecomposable component occurs with multiplicity one and identify which modules occur for given $r$ and $s$.
We develop further properties of the matrices $M(m, n, k)$ defined by the author and W. G. Kim in a previous work. In particular, we continue an alternative approach to the theory of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients in terms of combinatorics and convex geometry. New features include a censorship rule for zeros, a sequence of 36-pointed stars of zeros, and another proof of Dixon's Identity. As a major application, we reinterpret the work of Raynal {\it et al.} on vanishing Clebsch-Gordan coefficients as a "middle-out" approach to computing $M(m, n, k).$
We re-express the quantum Calogero-Sutherland model for the Lie algebra E7 and the particular value of the coupling constant K=1 by using the fundamental irreducible characters of the algebra as dynamical variables. For that, we need to develop a systematic procedure to obtain all the Clebsch-Gordan series required to perform the change of variables. We describe how the resulting quantum Hamiltonian operator can be used to compute more characters and Clebsch-Gordan series for this exceptional algebra.
We re-express the quantum Calogero-Sutherland model for the Lie algebra $E_6$ and the particular value of the coupling constant $κ=1$ by using the fundamental irreducible characters of the algebra as dynamical variables. For that, we need to develop a systematic procedure to obtain all the Clebsch-Gordan series required to perform the change of variables. We describe how the resulting quantum Hamiltonian operator can be used to compute more characters and Clebsch-Gordan series for this exceptional algebra.
An explicit bilinear generating function for Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials is proved. This formula involves continuous dual Hahn polynomials, Meixner-Pollaczek functions, and non-polynomial $_3F_2$-hypergeometric functions that we consider as continuous Hahn functions. An integral transform pair with continuous Hahn functions as kernels is also proved. These results have an interpretation for the tensor product decomposition of a positive and a negative discrete series representation of $\su(1,1)$ with respect to hyperbolic bases, where the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients are continuous Hahn funct…
We generalize a construction of Dunkl, obtaining a wide class intertwining functions on the symmetric group and a related family of multidimensional Hahn polynomials. Following a suggestion of Vilenkin and Klymik, we develop a tree-method approach for those intertwining functions. We also give a group theoretic proof of the relation between Hahn polynomials and Clebesh-Gordan coefficients, given analytically by Koornwinder and by Nikiforov, Smorodinskiĭ and Suslov. Such relation is also extended to the multidimensional case.
We present an algorithm for the explicit numerical calculation of SU(N) and SL(N,C) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, based on the Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern calculus. Our algorithm is well-suited for numerical implementation; we include a computer code in an appendix. Our exposition presumes only familiarity with the representation theory of SU(2).
We present the projection operator method in combination with the Wigner-Racah calculus of the subalgebra U_q(su(2)) for calculation of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients (CGCs) of the quantum algebra U_q(su(3)). The key formulas of the method are couplings of the tensor and projection operators and also a tensor form for the projection operator of U_q(su(3)). We obtain a very compact general analytical formula for the U_q(su(3)) CGCs in terms of the U_q(su(2)) Wigner 3nj-symbols.
If R, S, T are irreducible SL_3-representations, we give an easy and explicit description of a basis of the space of equivariant maps from R tensor S to T. We apply this method to the rationality problem for invariant function fields. In particular, we prove the rationality of the moduli space of plane curves of degree 34. This uses a criterion which ensures the stable rationality of some quotients of Grassmannians by an SL-action.
In the theory of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, one may recognize the domain space as the set of weakly semi-magic squares of size three. Two partitions on this set are considered: a triangle-hexagon model based on top lines, and one based on the orbits under a finite group action. In addition to giving another proof of McMahon's formula, we give a generating function that counts the so-called trivial zeros of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and its associated quasi-polynomial.
In previous work on Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, certain remarkable hexagonal arrays of integers are constructed that display behaviors found in Pascal's Triangle. We explain these behaviors further using the binomial transform and discrete convolution. Here we begin by introducing the notion of a binomial array and develop several "hockey stick" rules. Then we give an algorithm that generalizes the classical Vandermonde Identity; this produces infinite families of summation formulas, which we use to expand and prove certain combinatorial identities for the Catalan numbers. Finally, we recast …
The article is devoted to some ``strange'' phenomena of representation theory and their interrelations. Cross-projective representations of pairs of anticommutative algebras, alloys, their universal envelopping Lie algebras and their representations, quaternary algebras and their alloyability are discussed. Considered examples allow to conclude that new representations have some intriguing features (continuous moduli of finite-dimensional irreducible representations, sophisticated Clebsch-Gordan coefficient calculus, etc.).

We determine the Clebsch-Gordan and Racah-Wigner coefficients for continuous series of representations of the quantum deformed algebras U_q(sl(2)) and U_q(osp(1|2)). While our results for the former algebra reproduce formulas by Ponsot and Teschner, the expressions for the orthosymplectic algebra are new. Up to some normalization factors, the associated Racah-Wigner coefficients are shown to agree with the fusing matrix in the Neveu-Schwarz sector of N=1 supersymmetric Liouville field theory.
