The purpose of this paper is to study some properties of the Newton maps associated to real quintic polynomials. First using the Tschirnhaus transformation, we reduce the study of Newton's method for general quintic polynomials to the case $f(x)=x^{5}-c x+1$. Then we use symbolic dynamics to consider this last case and construct a kneading sequences tree for Newton maps. Finally, we prove that the topological entropy is a monotonic non-decreasing map with respect to the parameter $c$.
Exploiting the symmetry of the regular icosahedron, Peter Doyle and Curt McMullen constructed a solution to the quintic equation. Their algorithm relied on the dynamics of a certain icosahedral equivariant map for which the icosahedron's twenty face-centers--one of its special orbits--are superattracting periodic points. The current study considers the question of whether there are icosahedrally symmetric maps with superattracting periodic points at a 60-point orbit. The investigation leads to the discovery of two maps whose superattracting sets are configurations of points that are respective…
The paper deals with Newton maps of complex exponential functions and a surgery tool developed by P. Haïssinsky. The concept of "Postcritically minimal" Newton maps of complex exponential functions are introduced, analogous to postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials. The dynamics preserving mapping is constructed between the space of postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials and the space of postcritically minimal Newton maps of complex exponential functions.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
This paper constructs a combinatorial model for all postcritically finite rational maps arising as the Newton's method of a complex polynomial. This model is used in [LMS] to give a combinatorial classification of postcritically finite Newton maps of any degree.
In this paper, based on the known rigidity theorems of Newton maps ([DS], [RYZ]) and real polynomials ([KSS1], [CvS]), we prove the density of hyperbolicity in the family of real Newton maps of degree d>2 with all free critical points real.
We study various compactifications of moduli space of Newton maps. Mainly, we focus on GIT compactifiaction and Deligne-Mumford compactification. Then we explore the relations among these compactifications.
We study the convergence of graphs consisting of finitely many internal rays for degenerating Newton maps. We state a sufficient condition to guarantee the convergence. As an application, we investigate the boundedness of hyperbolic components in the moduli space of quartic Newton maps. We prove that such a hyperbolic component is bounded if and only if every element has degree $2$ on the immediate basin of each root.
We give a combinatorial classification for the class of postcritically fixed Newton maps of polynomials and indicate potential for extensions. As our main tool, we show that for a large class of Newton maps that includes all hyperbolic ones, every component of the basin of an attracting fixed point can be connected to infinity through a finite chain of such components.
The dynamical classification of rational maps is a central concern of holomorphic dynamics. Much progress has been made, especially on the classification of polynomials and some approachable one-parameter families of rational maps; the goal of finding a classification of general rational maps is so far elusive. Newton maps (rational maps that arise when applying Newton's method to a polynomial) form a most natural family to be studied from the dynamical perspective. Using Thurston's characterization and rigidity theorem, a complete combinatorial classification of postcritically finite Newton m…
Let $\{N_t\}$ be a holomorphic family of degree $d\ge 3$ Newton maps. By studying the related Berkovich dynamics, we obtain an estimate of the weak limit of the maximal measures of $N_t$. Moreover, we give a complete description of the rescaling limits for $\{N_t\}$.
In this paper we prove existence of matings between a large class of renormalizable cubic polynomials with one fixed critical point and another cubic polynomial having two fixed critical points. The resulting mating is a Newton map. Our result is the first part towards a conjecture by Tan Lei, stating that all (cubic) Newton maps can be described as matings or captures.
We obtain a unique, canonical one-to-one correspondence between the space of marked postcritically finite Newton maps of polynomials and the space of postcritically minimal Newton maps of entire maps that take the form $p(z) \text{exp}(q(z))$ for $p(z)$, $q(z)$ polynomials and $\text{exp}(z)$, the complex exponential function. This bijection preserves the dynamics and embedding of Julia sets and is induced by a surgery tool developed by Haïssinsky.
We collect from several sources some of the most important results on the forward and backward limits of points under real and complex rational functions, and in particular real and complex Newton maps, and we provide numerical evidence that a fundamental result by B.Barna on the dynamics of Newton's method on the real line extends to the real plane.
We investigate boundedness of hyperbolic components in the moduli space of Newton maps. For quartic maps, (i) we prove hyperbolic components possessing two distinct attracting cycles each of period at least two are bounded, and (ii) we characterize the possible points on the boundary at infinity for some other types of hyperbolic components. For general maps, we prove hyperbolic components whose elements have fixed superattracting basins mapping by degree at least three are unbounded.
In this paper, we define the core entropy for postcritically-finite Newton maps and study its continuity within this family. We show that the entropy function is not continuous in this family, which is different from the polynomial case studied by Thurston, Gao, Dudko- Schleicher, Tiozzo [Th+, GT, DS, Ti2], and describe completely the continuity of the entropy function at generic parameters.
We establish a principle that we call the Fatou-Shishikura injection for Newton maps of polynomials: there is a dynamically natural injection from the set of non-repelling periodic orbits of any Newton map to the set of its critical orbits. This injection obviously implies the classical Fatou-Shishikura inequality, but it is stronger in the sense that every non-repelling periodic orbit has its own critical orbit. Moreover, for every Newton map we associate a forward invariant graph (a puzzle) which provides a dynamically defined partition of the Riemann sphere into closed topological disks (pu…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of Newton maps for arbitrary polynomials. Let $p$ be an arbitrary polynomial with at least three distinct roots, and $f$ be its Newton map. It is shown that the boundary $\partial B$ of any immediate root basin $B$ of $f$ is locally connected. Moreover, $\partial B$ is a Jordan curve if and only if ${\rm deg}(f|_B)=2$. This implies that the boundaries of all components of root basins, for all polynomials' Newton maps, from the viewpoint of topology, are tame.
Dynamics on parabolic immediate basins for rational Newton maps of entire functions have been studied. It is proved that every parabolic immediate basin contains invariant accesses to the parabolic fixed point at infinity. Moreover, among these accesses there exists a unique dynamically defined access where dynamics are attracted towards the parabolic fixed point, whereas for other accesses, if there is any, the dynamics are repelled.
We give a combinatorial classification for the class of postcritically fixed Newton maps of polynomials as dynamical systems. This lays the foundation for classification results of more general classes of Newton maps. A fundamental ingredient is the proof that for every Newton map (postcritically finite or not) every connected component of the basin of an attracting fixed point can be connected to $\infty$ through a finite chain of such components.
We study rigidity of rational maps that come from Newton's root finding method for polynomials of arbitrary degrees. We establish dynamical rigidity of these maps: each point in the Julia set of a Newton map is either rigid (i.e. its orbit can be distinguished in combinatorial terms from all other orbits), or the orbit of this point eventually lands in the filled-in Julia set of a polynomial-like restriction of the original map. As a corollary, we show that the Julia sets of Newton maps in many non-trivial cases are locally connected; in particular, every cubic Newton map without Siegel points…
In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_3$ of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure $(\mathbb{\widehat{C}}, (2,3,\infty))$. We prove two results: (1). The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves. (2).The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The fibers of this map are characterized completely. The first result is a moduli space analogue of the first author's …
In this paper we give a unified proof of the fact that the Julia set of Newton's method applied to a holomorphic function of the complex plane (a polynomial of degree large than $1$ or an entire transcendental function) is connected. The result was recently completed by the authors' previous work, as a consequence of a more general theorem whose proof spreads among many papers, which consider separately a number of particular cases for rational and transcendental maps, and use a variety of techniques. In this note we present a unified, direct and reasonably self-contained proof which works for…
We show that for any set of n distinct points in the complex plane, there exists a polynomial p of degree at most n+1 so that the corresponding Newton map, or even the relaxed Newton map, for p has the given points as a super-attracting cycle. This improves the result due to Plaza and Romero (2011), which shows how to find such a polynomial of degree 2n. Moreover we show that in general one cannot improve upon degree n+1. Our methods allow us to give a simple, constructive proof of the known result that for each cycle length n at least 2 and degree d at least 3, there exists a polynomial of de…
Let $g(z)=\int_0^zp(t)\exp(q(t))\,dt+c$ where $p,q$ are polynomials and $c\in\mathbb{C}$, and let $f$ be the function from Newton's method for $g$. We show that under suitable assumptions the Julia set of $f$ has Lebesgue measure zero. Together with a theorem by Bergweiler, our result implies that $f^n(z)$ converges to zeros of $g$ almost everywhere in $\mathbb{C}$ if this is the case for each zero of $g''$. In order to prove our result, we establish general conditions ensuring that Julia sets have Lebesgue measure zero.
Newton's root finding method applied to a (transcendental) entire function f:C->C is the iteration of a meromorphic function N. It is well known that if for some starting value z, Newton's method converges to a point x in C, then f has a root at x. We show that in many cases, if an orbit converges to infinity for Newton's method, then f has a `virtual root' at infinity. More precisely, we show that if N has an invariant Baker domain that satisfies some mild assumptions, then 0 is an asymptotic value for f. Conversely, we show that if f has an asymptotic value of logarithmic type at 0, then the…
We prove that the Newton quotient of the average R(t) of a lipschitzian function (with non vanishing variation) with respect to the SRB measure on a transversal family f_t of piecewise expanding unimodal maps, after an appropriated normalization, converges in distribution to the normal distribution.
We prove that every transcendental meromorphic map f with a disconnected Julia set has a weakly repelling fixed point. This implies that the Julia set of Newton's method for finding zeroes of an entire map is connected. Moreover, extending a result of Cowen for holomorphic self-maps of the disc, we show the existence of absorbing domains for holomorphic self-maps of hyperbolic regions whose iterates tend to a boundary point. In particular, the results imply that periodic Baker domains of Newton's method for entire maps are simply connected, which solves a well-known open question.
In this work we study qualitative properties of real analytic bounded maps. The main tool is approximation of real valued functions analytic in rectangular domains of the complex plane by continued g-fractions of Wall. As an application, the Sundman-Poincaré method in the Newtonian three-body problem is revisited and applications to collision detection problem are considered.
We investigate i.i.d. random complex dynamical systems generated by probability measures on finite unions of the loci of holomorphic families of rational maps on the Riemann sphere. We show that under certain conditions on the families, for a generic system, (especially, for a generic random polynomial dynamical system,) for all but countably many initial values $z$ in the Riemann sphere, for almost every sequence of maps $γ=(γ_{1},γ_{2},\ldots )$, the Lyapunov exponent of $γ$ at $z$ is negative. Also, we show that for a generic system, for every initial value $z$ in the Riemann sphere, the or…
