We use the results of AG/0406290 to discuss the counting formulas of network flow polytopes and magic squares, i.e. the formula for the corresponding Ehrhart polynomial in terms of residues. We also discuss a description of the big cells using the theory of non broken circuit bases.
We introduce toric arrangements, essentially finite families of codimension 1 subtori of a torus or of their cosets, as a periodic generalization of hyperplane arrangements, compute cohomology of the complement of such an arrangement and apply the theory to give a geometric interpretation of the formulas of Brion--Szenes--Vergne counting the number of integral points in polytopes.
We study enumerative questions on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(L)$ of hyperplane arrangements with a given intersection lattice $L$. Mnëv's universality theorem suggests that these moduli spaces can be arbitrarily complicated; indeed it is even difficult to compute the dimension $D =\dim \mathcal{M}(L)$. Embedding $\mathcal{M}(L)$ in a product of projective spaces, we study the degree $N=\mathrm{deg} \mathcal{M}(L)$, which can be interpreted as the number of arrangements in $\mathcal{M}(L)$ that pass through $D$ points in general position. For generic arrangements $N$ can be computed combinat…
The fundamental group of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space is an important topological invariant. The third rank of successive quotients in the lower central series of the fundamental group was called Falk invariant of the arrangement since Falk gave the first formula and asked to give a combinatorial interpretation. In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for the Falk invariant of a signed graphic arrangement that do not have a $B_2$ as sub-arrangement.
We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projec…
In this article, we give a combinatorial formula for the Falk invariant of hyperplane arrangements attached to certain gain graphs.
Motivated by some computations of Feynman integrals and certain conjectures on mixed Tate motives, Bejleri and Marcolli posed questions about the $\mathbb{F}_1$-structure (in the sense of torification) on the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, especially for an arrangement defined in the space of cycles of a graph. In this paper, we prove that an arrangement has an $\mathbb{F}_1$-structure if and only if it is Boolean. We also prove that the arrangement in the cycle space of a graph is Boolean if and only if the cycle space has a basis consisting of cycles such that any two of them do not…
We analyze the monodromy action, over the rationals, on the first homology group of the Milnor fiber, for arbitrary subarrangements of Coxeter arrangements. We propose a combinatorial formula for the monodromy action, involving Aomoto complexes in positive characteristic. We verify the formula, in cases A, B and D.
A matroid is a machine capturing linearity of mathematical objects and producing combinatorial structures. Matroid structure arises everywhere since linearity is a ubiquitous concept. One natural way to obtain matroids is by considering hyperplane arrangements, which give rise to convex polytopes called matroid polytopes. Much research has been conducted on these three areas: matroids, matroid polytopes, and hyperplane arrangements. However, substantial gaps in our knowledge remain, and the correspondence diagram between those areas needs to be more extensive. For instance, currently, there is…
A pseudoline arrangement graph is a planar graph induced by an embedding of a (simple) pseudoline arrangement. We study the corresponding graph realization problem and properties of pseudoline arrangement graphs. In the first part, we give a simple criterion based on the degree sequence that says whether a degree sequence will have a pseudoline arrangement graph as one of its realizations. In the second part, we study the eccentricities of vertices in such graphs. We observe that the diameter (maximum eccentricity of a vertex in the graph) of any pseudoline arrangement graph on $n$ pseudolines…
Let $G$ be a simple graph on the vertex set $\{v_1,\dots,v_n\}$ with edge set $E$. Let $K$ be a field. The graphical arrangement $\mathcal{A}_G$ in $K^n$ is the arrangement $x_i-x_j=0, v_iv_j \in E$. An arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ is supersolvable if the intersection lattice $L(c(\mathcal{A}))$ of the cone $c(\mathcal{A})$ contains a maximal chain of modular elements. The second author has shown that a graphical arrangement $\mathcal{A}_G$ is supersolvable if and only if $G$ is a chordal graph. He later considered a generalization of graphical arrangements which are called $ψ$-graphical arrangem…
Let $ G $ be a simple graph of $ \ell $ vertices $ \{1, \dots, \ell \} $ with edge set $ E_{G} $. The graphical arrangement $ \mathcal{A}_{G} $ consists of hyperplanes $ \{x_{i}-x_{j}=0\} $, where $ \{i, j \} \in E_{G} $. It is well known that three properties, chordality of $ G $, supersolvability of $ \mathcal{A}_{G} $, and freeness of $ \mathcal{A}_{G} $ are equivalent. Recently, Richard P. Stanley introduced $ ψ$-graphical arrangement $ \mathcal{A}_{G, ψ} $ as a generalization of graphical arrangements. Lili Mu and Stanley characterized the supersolvability of the $ ψ$-graphical arrangemen…
The class of Worpitzky-compatible subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement together with an associated Eulerian polynomial was recently introduced by Ashraf, Yoshinaga and the first author, which brings the characteristic and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials into one formula. The subarrangements of the braid arrangement, the Weyl arrangement of type $A$, are known as the graphic arrangements. We prove that the Worpitzky-compatible graphic arrangements are characterized by cocomparability graphs. Our main result yields new formulas for the chromatic and graphic Eulerian polynomials of cocomparability gra…
In this article, we study freeness of hyperplane arrangements. One of the most investigated arrangement is a graphic arrangement. Stanley proved that a graphic arrangement is free if and only if the corresponding graph is chordal and Dirac showed that a graph is chordal if and only if the graph is obtained by "gluing" complete graphs. We will generalize Dirac's construction to simple matroids with modular joins introduced by Ziegler and show that every arrangement whose associated matroid is constructed in the manner mentioned above is divisionally free. Moreover, we apply the result to arrang…
We define specific multiplicities on the braid arrangement by using edge-bicolored graphs. To consider their freeness, we introduce the notion of bicolor-eliminable graphs as a generalization of Stanley's classification theory of free graphic arrangements by chordal graphs. This generalization gives us a complete classification of the free multiplicities defined above. As an application, we prove one direction of a conjecture of Athanasiadis on the characterization of the freeness of the deformation of the braid arrangement in terms of directed graphs.
We give a formula for computing the characteristic polynomial for certain hyperplane arrangements in terms of the number of bipartite graphs of given rank and cardinality.
Stan Wagon asked the following in 2000. Is every zonohedron face 3-colorable when viewed as a planar map? An equivalent question, under a different guise, is the following: is the arrangement graph of great circles on the sphere always vertex 3-colorable? (The arrangement graph has a vertex for each intersection point, and an edge for each arc directly connecting two intersection points.) Assume that no three circles meet at a point, so that this arrangement graph is 4-regular. In this note we have shown that all arrangement graphs defined as above are 3-colorable.
Ideal subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement are proved to be free by the multiple addition theorem (MAT) due to Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016). They form a significant class among Weyl subarrangements that are known to be free so far. The concept of MAT-free arrangements was introduced recently by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020) to capture a core of the MAT, which enlarges the ideal subarrangements from the perspective of freeness. The aim of this paper is to give a precise characterization of the MAT-freeness in the case of type $A$ Weyl subarrangements (or graphic arrangements). It is known that…
Every subarrangement of Weyl arrangements of type $ B_{\ell} $ is represented by a signed graph. Edelman and Reiner characterized freeness of subarrangements between type $ A_{\ell-1} $ and type $ B_{\ell} $ in terms of graphs. Recently, Suyama and the authors characterized freeness for subarrangements containing Boolean arrangements satisfying a certain condition. This article is a sequel to the previous work. Namely, we give a complete characterization for freeness of arrangements between Boolean arrangements and Weyl arrangements of type $ B_{\ell} $ in terms of graphs.
In this paper, we show that the eigenvalues of certain classes of Cayley graphs are integers. The (n,k,r)-arrangement graph A(n,k,r) is a graph with all the k-permutations of an n-element set as vertices where two k-permutations are adjacent if they differ in exactly r positions. We establish a relation between the eigenvalues of the arrangement graphs and the eigenvalues of certain Cayley graphs. As a result, the conjecture on integrality of eigenvalues of A(n,k,1) follows.
This paper considers a hyperplane arrangement constructed with a subset of a set of all simple paths in a graph. A connection of the constructed arrangement to the maximum matching problem is established. Moreover, the problem of finding the characteristic polynomial is reduced to the case of a connected initial graph. The formula of the characteristic polynomial was also found for the case, when the initial graph is a tree.
We give a complete formula for the characteristic polynomial of hyperplane arrangements $\mathcal J_n$ consisting of the hyperplanes $x_i+x_j=1$, $x_k=0$, $x_l=1$, $ 1\leq i, j, k, l\leq n$. The formula is obtained by associating hyperplane arrangements with graphs, and then enumerating central graphs via generating functions for the number of bipartite graphs of given order, size and number of connected components.
We exhibit a one-to-one correspondence between $3$-colored graphs and subarrangements of certain hyperplane arrangements denoted $\mathcal J_n$, $n \in \mathbb N$. We define the notion of centrality of $3$-colored graphs which corresponds to the centrality of hyperplane arrangements. Via the correspondence, the characteristic polynomial $χ_{\mathcal J_n}$ of $\mathcal J_n$ can be expressed in terms of the number of central $3$-colored graphs, and we compute $χ_{\mathcal J_n}$ for $n = 2, 3$.
We show new bijective proofs of previously known formulas for the number of regions of some deformations of the braid arrangement, by means of a bijection between the no-broken-circuit sets of the corresponding integral gain graphs and some kinds of labelled binary trees. This leads to new bijective proofs for the Shi, Catalan, and similar hyperplane arrangements.
This paper contains a description of a connection between the matching arrangement and the matching polyhedron. A bijection between regions of the matching arragement and LP-orientations of the matching polyhedron is constructed. This bijection allows to calculate the number of LP-orientations of the matching polyhedron with the characteristic polynomial of the matching arrangement.
We study curves consisting of unions of projective lines whose intersections are given by graphs. Under suitable hypotheses on the graph, these so-called \emph{graph curves} can be embedded in projective space as line arrangements. We discuss property $N_p$ for these embeddings and are able to produce products of linear forms that generate the ideal in certain cases. We also briefly discuss questions regarding the higher-dimensional subspace arrangements obtained by taking the secant varieties of graph curves.
Given a rank 3 real arrangement $\mathcal A$ of $n$ lines in the projective plane, the Dirac-Motzkin conjecture (proved by Green and Tao in 2013) states that for $n$ sufficiently large, the number of simple intersection points of $\mathcal A$ is greater than or equal to $n/2$. With a much simpler proof we show that if $\mathcal A$ is supersolvable, then the conjecture is true for any $n$ (a small improvement of original conjecture). The Slope problem (proved by Ungar in 1982) states that $n$ non-collinear points in the real plane determine at least $n-1$ slopes; we show that this is equivalent…
A common generalization for the chromatic polynomial and the flow polynomial of a graph $G$ is the Tutte polynomial $T(G;x,y)$. The combinatorial meaning for the coefficients of $T$ was discovered by Tutte at the beginning of its definition. However, for a long time the combinatorial meaning for the values of $T$ is missing, except for a few values such as $T(G;i,j)$, where $1\leq i,j\leq 2$, until recently for $T(G;1,0)$ and $T(G;0,1)$. In this third one of a series of papers, we introduce product valuations, cartesian product arrangements, and multivariable characteristic polynomials, and ap…
We study modular and integral flow polynomials of graphs by means of subgroup arrangements and lattice polytopes. We introduce an Eulerian equivalence relation on orientations, flow arrangements, and flow polytopes; and we apply the theory of Ehrhart polynomials to obtain properties of modular and integral flow polynomials. The emphasis is on the geometrical treatment through subgroup arrangements and Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to a reciprocity law for the modular flow polynomial, which gives rise to an interpretation on the values of the modular flow polynomial at negative inte…
In the present paper we study algebraic properties of edge ideals associated with plane curve arrangements via their Levi graphs. Using combinatorial properties of such Levi graphs we are able to describe those monomial algebras being Cohen-Macaulay, Buchsbaum, and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We also condsider the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for these edge ideals. We provide effective lower and upper bounds on them. As a byproduct of our study we connect, in general, various Buchsbaum properties of squarefree modules.
We study the exactness of certain combinatorially defined complexes which generalize the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a geometric lattice. The main results pertain to complex reflection arrangements and their restrictions. In particular, we consider the corresponding relation complexes and give a simple proof of the $n$-formality of these hyperplane arrangements. As an application, we are able to bound the Castelnouvo-Mumford regularity of certain modules over polynomial rings associated to Coxeter arrangements (real reflection arrangements) and their restrictions. The modules in question are defi…
Mirror graphs were introduced by Brešar et al. in 2004 as an intriguing class of graphs: vertex-transitive, isometrically embeddable into hypercubes, having a strong connection with regular maps and polytope structure. In this article we settle the structure of mirror graphs by characterizing them as precisely the Cayley graphs of the finite Coxeter groups or equivalently the tope graphs of reflection arrangements - well understood and classified structures. We provide a polynomial algorithm for their recognition.
This paper studies \emph{Dirichlet arrangements}, a generalization of graphic hyperplane arrangements arising from electrical networks and order polytopes of finite posets. We generalize descriptions of combinatorial features of graphic arrangements to Dirichlet arrangements, including characteristic polynomials and supersolvability. We apply these results to visibility sets of order polytopes and fixed-energy harmonic functions on electrical networks.
We prove that any finite set of half-planes can be colored by two colors so that every point of the plane, which belongs to at least three half-planes in the set, is covered by half-planes of both colors. This settles a problem of Keszegh.
A $k$-container $C(u, v)$ of a graph $G$ is a set of $k$ internally disjoint paths between $u$ and $v$. A $k$-container $C(u, v)$ of $G$ is a $k^*$-container if it is a spanning subgraph of $G$. A graph $G$ is $k^*$-connected if there exists a $k^*$-container between any two different vertices of G. A $k$-regular graph $G$ is super spanning connected if $G$ is $i^*$-container for all $1\le i\le k$. In this paper, we prove that the arrangement graph $A_{n, k}$ is super spanning connected if $n\ge 4$ and $n-k\ge 2$.
This is the first one of a series of papers on association of orientations, lattice polytopes, and abelian group arrangements to graphs. The purpose is to interpret the integral and modular tension polynomials of graphs at zero and negative integers. The whole exposition is put under the framework of subgroup arrangements and the application of Ehrhart polynomials. Such viewpoint leads to the following main results of the paper: (i) the reciprocity law for integral tension polynomials; (ii) the reciprocity law for modular tension polynomials; and (iii) a new interpretation for the value of the…
Felsner, Hurtado, Noy and Streinu (2000) conjectured that arrangement graphs of simple great-circle arrangements have chromatic number at most $3$. Motivated by this conjecture, we study the colorability of arrangement graphs for different classes of arrangements of (pseudo-)circles. In this paper the conjecture is verified for $\triangle$-saturated pseudocircle arrangements, i.e., for arrangements where one color class of the 2-coloring of faces consists of triangles only, as well as for further classes of (pseudo-)circle arrangements. These results are complemented by a construction which ma…
We define the bigraphical arrangement of a graph and show that the Pak-Stanley labels of its regions are the parking functions of a closely related graph, thus proving conjectures of Duval, Klivans, and Martin and of Hopkins and Perkinson. A consequence is a new proof of a bijection between labeled graphs and regions of the Shi arrangement first given by Stanley. We also give bounds on the number of regions of a bigraphical arrangement.
Originally in 1954 the Tutte polynomial was a bivariate polynomial associated to a graph in order to enumerate the colorings of this graph and of its dual graph at the same time. However the Tutte polynomial reveals more of the internal structure of a graph, and contains even other specializations from other sciences like the Jones polynomial in Knot theory, the partition function of the Pott model in statistical physics, and the reliability polynomial in network theory. In this article, we study the Tutte polynomial associated to more general objects which are the arrangements of hyperplanes.…
A pseudoline is a homeomorphic image of the real line in the plane so that its complement is disconnected. An arrangement of pseudolines is a set of pseudolines in which every two cross exactly once. A drawing of a graph is pseudolinear if the edges can be extended to an arrangement of pseudolines. In the recent study of crossing numbers, pseudolinear drawings have played an important role as they are a natural combinatorial extension of rectilinear drawings. A characterization of the pseudolinear drawings of $K_n$ was found recently. We extend this characterization to all graphs, by describin…
In this paper, we count the number of independent sets of a type of graph $G(\mathcal{A},q)$ associated to some hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$, which is a generalization of the construction of graphical arrangements. We show that when the parameters of $\mathcal{A}$ satisfy certain conditions, the number of independent sets of the disjoint union $G(\mathcal{A},q_1)\cup\cdots\cup G(\mathcal{A},q_s)$ depends only on the coefficients of $\mathcal{A}$ and the total number of vertices $\sum_i q_i$ when $q_i$'s are powers of large enough prime numbers. In addition it is independent of the coef…
We investigate arrangements of hyperplanes whose normal vectors are given by connected subgraphs of a fixed graph. These include the resonance arrangement and certain ideal subarrangements of Weyl arrangements. We characterize those which are free, simplicial, factored, or supersolvable. In particular, such an arrangement is free if and only if the graph is a cycle, a path, an almost path, or a path with a triangle attached to it.
We study the problem of half-domination sets of vertices in vertex transitive infinite graphs generated by regular or semi-regular tessellations of the plane. In some cases, the results obtained are sharp and in the rest, we show upper bounds for the average densities of vertices in half-domination sets.
A Weyl arrangement is the hyperplane arrangement defined by a root system. Arnold and Saito proved that every Weyl arrangement is free. The Weyl subarrangements of type $A_{\ell}$ are represented by simple graphs. Stanley gave a characterization of freeness for this type of arrangements in terms of thier graph. In addition, The Weyl subarrangements of type $B_{\ell}$ can be represented by signed graphs. A characterization of freeness for them is not known. However, characterizations of freeness for a few restricted classes are known. For instance, Edelman and Reiner characterized the freeness …
A gain graph is a graph whose edges are labelled invertibly by "gains" from a group. "Switching" is a transformation of gain graphs that generalizes conjugation in a group. A "weak chromatic function" of gain graphs with gains in a fixed group satisfies three laws: deletion-contraction for links with neutral gain, invariance under switching, and nullity on graphs with a neutral loop. The laws lead to the "weak chromatic group" of gain graphs, which is the universal domain for weak chromatic functions. We find expressions, valid in that group, for a gain graph in terms of minors without neutral…
The (n,k)-arrangement graph A(n,k) is a graph with all the k-permutations of an n-element set as vertices where two k-permutations are adjacent if they agree in exactly k-1 positions. We introduce a cyclic decomposition for k-permutations and show that this gives rise to a very fine equitable partition of A(n,k). This equitable partition can be employed to compute the complete set of eigenvalues (of the adjacency matrix) of A(n,k). Consequently, we determine the eigenvalues of A(n,k) for small values of k. Finally, we show that any eigenvalue of the Johnson graph J(n,k) is an eigenvalue of A(n…
The Tutte polynomial is a fundamental invariant associated to a graph, matroid, vector arrangement, or hyperplane arrangement. This short survey focuses on some of the most important results on Tutte polynomials of hyperplane arrangements. We show that many enumerative, algebraic, geometric, and topological invariants of a hyperplane arrangement can be expressed in terms of its Tutte polynomial. We also show that, even if one is only interested in computing the Tutte polynomial of a graph or a matroid, the theory of hyperplane arrangements provides a powerful finite field method for this compu…
The growing size of the multiprocessor system increases its vulnerability to component failures. It is crucial to locate and to replace the faulty processors to maintain a system's high reliability. The fault diagnosis is the process of identifying faulty processors in a system through testing. This paper shows that the largest connected component of the survival graph contains almost all remaining vertices in the $(n,k)$-arrangement graph $A_{n,k}$ when the number of moved faulty vertices is up to twice or three times the traditional connectivity. Based on this fault resiliency, we establishe…
