We consider potential type dynamical systems in finite dimensions with two meta-stable states. They are subject to two sources of perturbation: a slow external periodic perturbation of period $T$ and a small Gaussian random perturbation of intensity $ε$, and, therefore, are mathematically described as weakly time inhomogeneous diffusion processes. A system is in stochastic resonance, provided the small noisy perturbation is tuned in such a way that its random trajectories follow the exterior periodic motion in an optimal fashion, that is, for some optimal intensity $ε(T)$. The physicists' favorite, measures of quality of periodic tuning--and thus stochastic resonance--such as spectral power amplification or signal-to-noise ratio, have proven to be defective. They are not robust w.r.t. effective model reduction, that is, for the passage to a simplified finite state Markov chain model reducing the dynamics to a pure jumping between the meta-stable states of the original system. An entirely probabilistic notion of stochastic resonance based on the transition dynamics between the domains of attraction of the meta-stable states--and thus failing to suffer from this robustness defect--was proposed before in the context of one-dimensional diffusions. It is investigated for higher-dimensional systems here, by using extensions and refinements of the Freidlin--Wentzell theory of large deviations for time homogeneous diffusions. Large deviations principles developed for weakly time inhomogeneous diffusions prove to be key tools for a treatment of the problem of diffusion exit from a domain and thus for the approach of stochastic resonance via transition probabilities between meta-stable sets.
This paper investigates a time-dependent multidimensional stochastic differential equation with drift being a distribution in a suitable class of Sobolev spaces with negative derivation order. This is done through a careful analysis of the corresponding Kolmogorov equation whose coefficient is a distribution.
We consider a $d$-dimensional SDE with an identity diffusion matrix and a drift vector being a vector function of bounded variation. We give a representation for the derivative of the solution with respect to the initial data.
The large deviations principles are established for a class of multidimensional degenerate stochastic differential equations with reflecting boundary conditions. The results include two cases where the initial conditions are adapted and anticipated.
In this paper we prove the existence of strong solutions to a SDE with a generalized drift driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion for small Hurst parameters H<1/2. Here the generalized drift is given as the local time of the unknown solution process, which can be considered an extension of the concept of a skew Brownian motion to the case of fractional Brownian motion. Our approach for the construction of strong solutions is new and relies on techniques from Malliavin calculus combined with a "local time variational calculus" argument.
We present a novel approach of coupling two multidimensional and non-degenerate Itô processes $(X_t)$ and $(Y_t)$ which follow dynamics with different drifts. Our coupling is sticky in the sense that there is a stochastic process $(r_t)$, which solves a one-dimensional stochastic differential equation with a sticky boundary behavior at zero, such that almost surely $|X_t-Y_t|\leq r_t$ for all $t\geq 0$. The coupling is constructed as a weak limit of Markovian couplings. We provide explicit, non-asymptotic and long-time stable bounds for the probability of the event $\{X_t=Y_t\}$.
We study existence and uniqueness of solution for stochastic differential equations with distributional drift by giving a meaning to the Stroock-Varadhan martingale problem associated such equations. The approach we exploit is the one of paracontrolled distributions introduced in [13]. As a result we make sense of the three dimensional polymer measure with white noise potential.
Large deviations principle is obtained for terminating multidimensional compound renewal processes. We also obtained the asymptotic of large deviations for the case when a Gibbs change of the original probability measure takes place. The random processes mentioned in the paper are widely used in polymer pinning models.
We establish well-posedness results for multidimensional non degenerate $α$-stable driven SDEs with time inhomogeneous singular drifts in $\mathbb{L}^r-{\mathbb B}_{p,q}^{-1+γ}$ with $γ<1$ and $α$ in $(1,2]$, where $\mathbb{L}^r$ and ${\mathbb B}_{p,q}^{-1+γ} $ stand for Lebesgue and Besov spaces respectively. Precisely, we first prove the well-posedness of the corresponding martingale problem and then give a precise meaning to the dynamics of the SDE. This allows us in turn to define an ad hoc notion of weak solution, for which well-posedness holds as well. Our results rely on the smoothing p…
The problem on identification of a limit of an ordinary differential equation with discontinuous drift that perturbed by a zero-noise is considered in multidimensional case. This problem is a classical subject of stochastic analysis. However the multidimensional case was poorly investigated. We assume that the drift coefficient has a jump discontinuity along a hyperplane and is Lipschitz continuous in the upper and lower half-spaces. It appears that the behavior of the limit process depends on signs of the normal component of the drift at the upper and lower half-spaces in a neighborhood of th…
Pathwise uniqueness for multi-dimensional stochastic McKean--Vlasov equation is established under moderate regularity conditions on the drift and diffusion coefficients. Both drift and diffusion depend on the marginal measure of the solution. For pathwise uniqueness, the drift is assumed to be Dini-continuous in the state variable, while the diffusion must be Lipschitz, continuous in time and uniformly nondegenerate. The setting is classical McKean--Vlasov, that is, coefficients of the equation are represented as integrals over the marginal distributions of the process.
Shot noise processes are used in applied probability to model a variety of physical systems in, for example, teletraffic theory, insurance and risk theory and in the engineering sciences. In this work we prove a large deviation principle for the sample-paths of a general class of multidimensional state-dependent Poisson shot noise processes. The result covers previously known large deviation results for one dimensional state-independent shot noise processes with light tails. We use the weak convergence approach to large deviations, which reduces the proof to establishing the appropriate conver…
In this paper we study path-by-path uniqueness for multidimensional stochastic differential equations driven by the Brownian sheet. We assume that the drift coefficient is unbounded, verifies a spatial linear growth condition and is componentwise nondeacreasing. Our approach consists of showing the result for bounded and componentwise nondecreasing drift using both a local time-space representation and a law of iterated logarithm for Brownian sheets. The desired result follows using a Gronwall type lemma on the plane. As a by product, we obtain the existence of a unique strong solution of mult…
In this paper we solve a selection problem for multidimensional SDE $d X^\varepsilon(t)=a(X^\varepsilon(t)) d t+\varepsilon σ(X^\varepsilon(t))\, d W(t)$, where the drift and diffusion are locally Lipschitz continuous outside of a fixed hyperplane $H$. It is assumed that $X^\varepsilon(0)=x^0\in H$, the drift $a(x)$ has a Hoelder asymptotics as $x$ approaches $H$, and the limit ODE $d X(t)=a(X(t))\, d t$ does not have a unique solution. We show that if the drift pushes the solution away of $H$, then the limit process with certain probabilities selects some extreme solutions to the limit ODE. I…
We take the point of view of the particle in a multidimensional nearest neighbor random walk in random environment (RWRE). We prove a quenched large deviation principle and derive a variational formula for the quenched rate function. Most of the previous results in this area rely on the subadditive ergodic theorem. We employ a different technique which is based on a minimax theorem. Large deviation principles for RWRE have been proven for i.i.d. nestling environments subject to a moment condition and for ergodic uniformly elliptic environments. We assume only that the environment is ergodic an…

We consider a random walk in random environment with random holding times, that is, the random walk jumping to one of its nearest neighbors with some transition probability after a random holding time. Both the transition probabilities and the laws of the holding times are randomly distributed over the integer lattice. Our main result is a quenched large deviation principle for the position of the random walk. The rate function is given by the Legendre transform of the so-called Lyapunov exponents for the Laplace transform of the first passage time. By using this representation, we derive some…
In this paper, using Zvonkin type transform, the large deviation principle is proved for stochastic differential equations with Dini continuous drifts, where the existed methods for large deviation principle are unavailable. The method and result are new in related fields. Moreover, the result is also extended to a class of degenerate stochastic differential equations with Dini continuous drifts.
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
We prove a full large deviations principle in large time, for a diffusion process with random drift V, which is a centered Gaussian shear flow random field. The large deviations principle is established in a ``quenched'' setting, i.e. is valid almost surely in the randomness of V.
Let Z be an Rd-valued Levy process with strong finite p-variation for some p<2. We prove that the ''decompensated'' process Y obtained from Z by annihilating its generalized drift has a small deviations property in p-variation. This property means that the null function belongs to the support of the law of Y with respect to the p-variation distance. Thanks to the continuity results of T. J. Lyons/D. R. E. Williams, this allows us to prove a support theorem with respect to the p-Skorohod distance for canonical SDE driven by Z without any assumption on Z, improving the results of H. Kunita. We a…
Consider two laws \(P\) and \(Q\) of multidimensional possibly explosive diffusions with common diffusion coefficient \(\mathfrak{a}\) and drift coefficients \(\mathfrak{b}\) and \(\mathfrak{b} + \mathfrak{a} \mathfrak{c}\), respectively, and the law \(P^\circ\) of an auxiliary diffusion with diffusion coefficient \(\langle \mathfrak{c},\mathfrak{a}\mathfrak{c}\rangle^{-1}\mathfrak{a}\) and drift coefficient \(\langle \mathfrak{c}, \mathfrak{a}\mathfrak{c}\rangle^{-1}\mathfrak{b}\). We show that \(P \ll Q\) if and only if the auxiliary diffusion \(P^\circ\) explodes almost surely and that \(P\…
We investigate the density large deviation function for a multidimensional conservation law in the vanishing viscosity limit, when the probability concentrates on weak solutions of a hyperbolic conservation law conservation law. When the conductivity and dif-fusivity matrices are proportional, i.e. an Einstein-like relation is satisfied, the problem has been solved in [4]. When this proportionality does not hold, we compute explicitly the large deviation function for a step-like density profile, and we show that the associated optimal current has a non trivial structure. We also derive a lower…
We investigate large deviation properties of the maximum likelihood drift parameter estimator for Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process driven by mixed fractional Brownian motion.
This paper establishs the large deviation principle (LDP) for multiple averages on $\mathbb{N}^d$. We extend the previous work of [Carinci et al., Indag. Math. 2012] to multidimensional lattice $\mathbb{N}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. The same technique is also applicable to the weighted multiple average launched by Fan [Fan, Adv. Math. 2021]. Finally, the boundary conditions are imposed to the multiple sum and explicit formulae of the energy functions with respect to the boundary conditions are obtained.
We prove a Freidlin-Wentzell result for stochastic differential equations in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces perturbed by a cylindrical Wiener process. We do not assume the drift to be Lipschitz continuous, but only continuous with at most linear growth. Our result applies, in particular, to a large class of nonlinear fractional diffusion equations perturbed by a space-time white noise.
Let $X_t$ be a reversible and positive recurrent diffusion in $R^d$ described by \begin{equation}\nonumber X_t=x+σb(t)+\int_0^tm(X_s)\dif s, \end{equation} where the diffusion coefficient $σ$ is a positive-definite matrix and the drift $m$ is a smooth function. Let $X_t(A)$ denote the image of a compact set $A\subset R^d$ under the stochastic flow generated by $X_t$. If the divergence of the drift is strictly negative, there exists a set of functions $u$ such that \[\lim_{t\to\infty} \int_{X_t(A)}u(x)\dif x=0\quad{a.s.} \] A characterization of the functions $u$ is provided, as well as lower a…
We prove that probability laws of certain multidimensional semimartingales which includes time-inhomogenous diffusions, under suitable assumptions, satisfy Quadratic Transportation Cost Inequality under the uniform metric. From this we derive concentration properties of Lipschitz functions of process paths that depend on the entire history. In particular, we estimate concentration of boundary local time of reflected Brownian motions on a polyhedral domain. We work out explicit applications of consequences of measure concentration for the case of Brownian motion with rank-based drifts.
We consider multidimensional discrete valued random walks with nonzero drift killed when leaving general cones of the euclidian space. We find the asymptotics for the exit time from the cone and study weak convergence of the process conditioned on not leaving the cone. We get quasistationarity of its limiting distribution. Finally we construct a version of the random walk conditioned to never leave the cone.
Let X be the solution of the multidimensional stochastic differential equationdX(t) = b(t, X(t)) dt + sigma(t, X(t)) dW(t)\, with X(0)=x where W is a standard Brownian motion. We show that when b is measurable and sigma is in an appropriate Sobolev space, the law of X satisfies a uniform quadratic transportation inequality.
We consider the last zero crossing time $T_{μ,t}$ of a Brownian motion, with drift $μ\neq 0$ in the time interval $[0, t]$. We prove the large deviation principle of $\{T_{μ\sqrt r t} : r > 0 \}$ as $r$ tends to infinity. Moreover, motivated by the results on moderate deviations in the literature, we also prove a class of large deviation principles for the same random variables with different scalings, which are governed by the same rate function. Finally we compare some aspects of the classical moderate deviation results, and the results in this paper.
Sticky Brownian motions, as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, have various applications in many fields, including queuing theory and mathematical finance. In this paper, we are concerned about the stationary distributions of a multidimensional sticky Brownian motion, provided it is stable. We will study the large deviations principle for stationary distribution and the tail behaviour of the joint stationary distribution.
We establish large deviation principles and phase transition results for both quenched and annealed settings of nearest-neighbor random walks with constant drift in random nonnegative potentials on $\mathbb Z^d$. We complement the analysis of \cite{Zer}, where a shape theorem on the Lyapunov functions and a large deviation principle in absence of the drift are achieved for the quenched setting.
We study a class of reflected McKean-Vlasov diffusions over a convex domain with self-stabilizing coefficients. This includes coefficients that do not satisfy the classical Wasserstein Lipschitz condition. Further, the process is constrained to a (not necessarily bounded) convex domain by a local time on the boundary. These equations include the subclass of reflected self-stabilizing diffusions that drift towards their mean via a convolution of the solution law with a stabilizing potential. Firstly, we establish existence and uniqueness results for this class and address the propagation of cha…
Asymptotic local equivalence in the sense of Le Cam is established for inference on the drift in multidimensional ergodic diffusions and an accompanying sequence of Gaussian shift experiments. The nonparametric local neighbourhoods can be attained for any dimension, provided the regularity of the drift is sufficiently large. In addition, a heteroskedastic Gaussian regression experiment is given, which is also locally asymptotically equivalent and which does not depend on the centre of localisation. For one direction of the equivalence an explicit Markov kernel is constructed.
We consider a multidimensional SDE with a Gaussian noise and a drift vector being a vector function of bounded variation. We prove the existence of generalized derivative of the solution with respect to the initial conditions and represent the derivative as a solution of a linear SDE with coefficients depending on the initial process. The representation obtained is a natural generalization of the expression for the derivative in the smooth case. The theory of continuous additive functionals is used.
We consider a non-stationary Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process. We establish a sharp large deviation principle for the maximum likelihood estimator of its drift parameter.
We provide sharp Large Deviation estimates for the probability of exit from a domain for the bridge of a $d$-dimensional general diffusion process $X$, as the conditioning time tends to $0$. This kind of results is motivated by applications to numerical simulation. In particular we investigate the influence of the drift $b$ of $X$. It turns out that the sharp asymptotics for the exit time probability are independent of the drift, provided $b$ enjoyes a simple condition that is always satisfied in dimension $1$. On the other hand, we show that the drift can be influential if this assumption is …
This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for multidimensional queueing models with feedback. We derive a new version of the contraction principle where the continuous map is not well-defined on the whole space: we give conditions under which it allows to identify the rate function. We illustrate our technique by deriving a large deviation principle for a class of networks that contains the classical Jackson networks.
In this paper we prove a large deviation principle for the empirical drift of a one-dimensional Brownian motion with self-repellence called the Edwards model. Our results extend earlier work in which a law of large numbers, respectively, a central limit theorem were derived. In the Edwards model a path of length $T$ receives a penalty $e^{-βH_T}$, where $ H_T$ is the self-intersection local time of the path and $β\in(0,\infty)$ is a parameter called the strength of self-repellence. We identify the rate function in the large deviation principle for the endpoint of the path as $β^{\frac 23} I(β^…
In this paper, under a one-sided Lipschitz condition on the drift coefficient we adopt (via contraction principle) a exponential approximation argument to investigate large deviations for neutral stochastic functional differential equations.
We study multidimensional stochastic volatility models in which the volatility process is a positive continuous function of a continuous multidimensional Volterra process that can be not self-similar. The main results obtained in this paper are a generalization of the results due, in the one-dimensional case, to Cellupica and Pacchiarotti [M. Cellupica and B. Pacchiarotti (2021) Pathwise Asymptotics for Volterra Type Stochastic Volatility Models. Journal of Theoretical Probability, 34(2):682--727]. We state some (pathwise and finite-dimensional) large deviation principles for the scaled log-pr…
We prove a large deviation principle of Freidlin-Wentzell's type for the multivalued stochastic differential equations with monotone drifts, which in particular contains a class of SDEs with reflection in a convex domain.
In this paper we present a new method for the construction of strong solutions of SDE's with merely integrable drift coefficients driven by a multidimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H < 1/2. Furthermore, we prove the rather surprising result of the higher order Frechet differentiability of stochastic flows of such SDE's in the case of a small Hurst parameter. In establishing these results we use techniques from Malliavin calculus combined with new ideas based on a "local time variational calculus". We expect that our general approach can be also applied to the study of…
Optimal B-robust estimate is constructed for multidimensional parameter in drift coefficient of diffusion type process with small noise. Optimal mean-variance robust (optimal V -robust) trading strategy is find to hedge in mean-variance sense the contingent claim in incomplete financial market with arbitrary information structure and misspecified volatility of asset price, which is modelled by multidimensional continuous semimartingale. Obtained results are applied to stochastic volatility model, where the model of latent volatility process contains unknown multidimensional parameter in drift …
The Cauchy problem for a multidimensional linear transport equation with unbounded drift is investigated. Provided the drift is Holder continuous , existence, uniqueness and strong stability of solutions are obtained. The proofs are based on a careful analysis of the associated stochastic flow of characteristics and techniques of stochastic analysis.
Consider a multidimensional diffusion process $X=\{X\left(t\right) :t\in\lbrack0,1]\}$. Let $\varepsilon>0$ be a \textit{deterministic}, user defined, tolerance error parameter. Under standard regularity conditions on the drift and diffusion coefficients of $X$, we construct a probability space, supporting both $X$ and an explicit, piecewise constant, fully simulatable process $X_{\varepsilon}$ such that \[ \sup_{0\leq t\leq1}\left\Vert X_{\varepsilon}\left(t\right) -X\left(t\right) \right\Vert_{\infty}<\varepsilon \] with probability one. Moreover, the user can adaptively choose $\varepsilon^…
In this paper, we investigate the consistency and asymptotic efficiency of an estimator of the drift matrix, $F$, of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes that are not necessarily stable. We consider all the cases. (1) The eigenvalues of $F$ are in the right half space (i.e., eigenvalues with positive real parts). In this case the process grows exponentially fast. (2) The eigenvalues of $F$ are on the left half space (i.e., the eigenvalues with negative or zero real parts). The process where all eigenvalues of $F$ have negative real parts is called a stable process and has a unique invariant (i.e., sta…
