We show that for any co-amenable compact quantum group A=C(G) there exists a unique compact Hausdorff topology on the set EA of isomorphism classes of ergodic actions of G such that the following holds: for any continuous field of ergodic actions of G over a locally compact Hausdorff space T the map T->EA sending each t in T to the isomorphism class of the fibre at t is continuous if and only if the function counting the multiplicity of gamma in each fibre is continuous over T for every equivalence class gamma of irreducible unitary representations of G. Generalizations for arbitrary compact quantum groups are also obtained. In the case G is a compact group, the restriction of this topology on the subset of isomorphism classes of ergodic actions of full multiplicity coincides with the topology coming from the work of Landstad and Wassermann. Podles spheres are shown to be continuous in the natural parameter as ergodic actions of the quantum SU(2) group. When A is separable, we also introduce a notion of regular quantum metric on G, and show how to use it to induce a quantum metric on any ergodic action of G in the sense of Rieffel. Furthermore, we introduce a quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance between ergodic actions and show that it induces the above topology.
We construct ergodic actions of compact quantum groups on C^*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, and exhibit phenomena of such actions that are of a different nature from ergodic actions of compact Lie groups. In particular, we construct: (1). ergodic actions of the compact quantum groups $A_u(Q)$ on the Powers factors; (2). ergodic actions of the compact quantum groups $A_u(n)$ on the hyperfinite II_1 factor; (3). ergodic actions of the compact quantum groups $A_u(Q)$ on the Cuntz algebras; (4). ergodic actions of general compact quantum groups on their homogeneous spaces and an example of a …
We give a new alternative version of the reconstruction procedure for ergodic actions of compact quantum groups and we refine it to include characterizations of (braided commutative) Yetter-Drinfeld C*-algebras. We then use this to construct families of ergodic actions of easy quantum groups out of combinatorial data involving partitions and study them. Eventually, we use this categorical point of view to show that the quantum permutation group cannot act ergodically on a classical connected compact space, thereby answering a question of D. Goswami and H. Huang.
To a proper inclusion N\subset M of II_1 factors of finite Jones index [M:N], we associate an ergodic C*-action of the quantum group S_μU(2). The deformation parameter is determined by -1<μ<0 and [M:N]=|μ+μ^{-1}|. The higher relative commutants can be identified with the spectral spaces of the tensor powers of the defining representation of the quantum group. This ergodic action may be thought of as a virtual subgroup of S_μU(2) in the sense of Mackey arising from the tensor category generated by M regarded as a bimodule over N. μis negative as M is a real bimodule.
We use a tensor C*-category with conjugates and two quasitensor functors into the category of Hilbert spaces to define a *-algebra depending functorially on this data. If one of them is tensorial, we can complete in the maximal C*-norm. A particular case of this construction allows us to begin with solutions of the conjugate equations and associate ergodic actions of quantum groups on the C*-algebra in question. The quantum groups involved are A_u(Q) and B_u(Q).
We develop theory of multiplicity maps for compact quantum groups, as an application, we obtain a complete classification of right coideal $C^*$-algebras of $C(SU_q(2))$ for $q\in [-1,1]\setminus \{0\}$. They are labeled with Dynkin diagrams, but classification results for positive and negative cases of $q$ are different. Many of the coideals are quantum spheres or quotient spaces by quantum subgroups, but we do have other ones in our classification list.
Among the ergodic actions of a compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ on possibly non-commutative spaces, those that are {\it embeddable} are the natural analogues of actions of a compact group on its homogeneous spaces. These can be realized as {\it coideal subalgebras} of the function algebra $\mathcal{O}(\mathbb{G})$ attached to the compact quantum group. We classify the embeddable ergodic actions of the compact quantum group $O_{-1}(2)$, basing our analysis on the bijective correspondence between all ergodic actions of the classical group $O(2)$ and those of its quantum twist resulting from th…
The spectral functor of an ergodic action of a compact quantum group G on a unital C*-algebra is quasitensor, in the sense that the tensor product of two spectral subspaces is isometrically contained in the spectral subspace of the tensor product representation, and the inclusion maps satisfy natural properties. We show that any quasitensor *-functor from Rep(G) to the category of Hilbert spaces is the spectral functor of an ergodic action of G on a unital C*-algebra. As an application, we associate an ergodic G-action on a unital C*-algebra to an inclusion of Rep(G) into an abstract tensor C*…
In this paper we study the harmonic elements of (convolution) Markov maps associated to (ergodic) actions of locally compact quantum groups on ($σ$-finite) von Neumann algebras. We give several equivalent conditions under which the harmonic elements are trivial.
We give local upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the modular operator associated to an ergodic action of a compact quantum group on a unital C*-algebra. They involve the modular theory of the quantum group and the growth rate of quantum dimensions of its representations and they become sharp if other integral invariants grow subexponentially. For compact groups, this reduces to the finiteness theorem of Hoegh-Krohn, Landstad and Stormer. Consequently, compact quantum groups of Kac type admitting an ergodic action with a non-tracial invariant state must have representations whose dim…
We establish that particular quotients of the non-commutative Hardy algebras carry ergodic actions of convergent discrete subgroups of the group $\operatorname*{SU}(n,1)$ of automorphisms of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}% ^{n}$. To do so, we provide a mean to compute the spectra of quotients of noncommutative Hardy algebra and characterize their automorphisms in term of biholomorphic maps of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$.
The goal of this notice is to establish Not-commutative Point- wise Ergodic Theorems for actions of the Hyperbolic Groups. Similar non-commutative results were done by Bufetov, Khristoforov and Kli- menko, and later by Pollicott and Sharp. We were interested to expand short notice in Policott and Sharp's paper about non-commutative er- godic theorems.
We investigate Gaussian actions through the study of their crossed-product von Neumann algebra. The motivational result is Chifan and Ioana's ergodic decomposition theorem for Bernoulli actions (Ergodic subequivalence relations induced by a Bernoulli action, {\it Geometric and Functional Analysis}{\bf 20} (2010), 53-67) that we generalize to Gaussian actions. We also give general structural results that allow us to get a more accurate result at the level of von Neumann algebras. More precisely, for a large class of Gaussian actions $Γ\curvearrowright X$, we show that any subfactor $N$ of $L^\i…
In this article, we give a general construction of spectral triples from certain Lie group actions on unital C*-algebras. If the group G is compact and the action is ergodic, we actually obtain a real and finitely summable spectral triple which satisfies the first order condition of Connes' axioms. This provides a link between the "algebraic" existence of ergodic action and the "analytic" finite summability property of the unbounded selfadjoint operator. More generally, for compact G we carefully establish that our (symmetric) unbounded operator is essentially selfadjoint. Our results are illu…
Recent results of M.Junge and Q.Xu on the ergodic properties of the averages of kernels in noncommutative L^p-spaces are applied to the analysis of the almost uniform convergence of operators induced by the convolutions on compact quantum groups.
We show that an ergodic measure preserving action $Γ\curvearrowright (X,μ)$ of a discrete group $Γ$ on a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,μ)$ satisfies the local spectral gap property (introduced by Boutonnet, Ioana and Salehi Golsefidy) if and only if it is strongly ergodic. In fact, we prove a more general local spectral gap criterion in arbitrary von Neumann algebras. Using this criterion, we also obtain a short and elementary proof of Connes' spectral gap theorem for full $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors as well as its recent generalization to full type $\mathrm{III}$ factors.
A probability measure preserving action of Γon (X,μ) is called rigid if the inclusion of L^\infty(X) into the crossed product L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γhas the relative property (T) in the sense of Popa. We give examples of rigid, free, probability measure preserving actions that are ergodic but not strongly ergodic. The same examples show that rigid actions may admit non-rigid quotients.
We prove that the solid ergodicity property is stable with respect to taking coinduction for a fairly large class of coinduced action. More precisely, assume that $Σ<Γ$ are countable groups such that $gΣg^{-1}\cap Σ$ is finite for any $g\inΓ\setminusΣ$. Then any measure preserving action $Σ\curvearrowright X_0$ gives rise to a solidly ergodic equivalence relation if and only if the equivalence relation of the associated coinduced action $Γ\curvearrowright X$ is solidly ergodic. We also obtain orbit equivalence rigidity for such actions by showing that the orbit equivalence relation of a rigid …
We extend in a noncommutative setting the individual ergodic theorem of Nevo and Stein concerning measure preserving actions of free groups and averages on spheres $s_{2n}$ of even radius. Here we study state preserving actions of free groups on a von Neumann algebra $A$ and the behaviour of $(s_{2n}(x))$ for $x$ in noncommutative spaces $L^p(A)$. For the Cesàro means $\frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} s_k$ and $p = +\infty$, this problem was solved by Walker. Our approach is based on ideas of Bufetov. We prove a noncommutative version of Rota ``Alternierende Verfahren'' theorem. To this end, we int…
Let $Γ$ be a countable group and denote by $\Cal S$ the equivalence relation induced by the Bernoulli action $Γ\curvearrowright [0,1]^Γ$, where $[0,1]^Γ$ is endowed with the product Lebesgue measure. We prove that for any subequivalence relation $\Cal R$ of $\Cal S$, there exists a partition $\{X_i\}_{i\geq 0}$ of $[0,1]^Γ$ with $\Cal R$-invariant measurable sets such that $\Cal R_{|X_0}$ is hyperfinite and $\Cal R_{|X_i}$ is strongly ergodic (hence ergodic), for every $i\geq 1$.
We prove a mean ergodic theorem for amenable discrete quantum groups. As an application, we prove a Wiener type theorem for continuous measures on compact metrizable groups.
The notion of compact quantum subgroup is revisited and an alternative definition is given. Induced representations are considered and a Frobenius reciprocity theorem is obtained. A relationship between ergodic actions of compact quantum groups on C*-algebras and topological transitivity is investigated. A sufficient condition for embedding such actions in quantum quotient spaces is obtained.
Let $\Cal S$ be the equivalence relation induced by the action SL$_2(\Bbb Z)\curvearrowright (\Bbb T^2,λ^2)$, where $λ^2$ denotes the Haar measure on the 2-torus, $\Bbb T^2$. We prove that any ergodic subequivalence relation $\Cal R$ of $\Cal S$ is either hyperfinite or rigid in the sense of S. Popa ([Po06]). The proof uses an ergodic-theoretic criterion for rigidity of countable, ergodic, probability measure preserving equivalence relations. Moreover, we give a purely ergodic-theoretic formulation of rigidity for free, ergodic, probability measure preserving actions of countable groups.
Connes gave a spectral interpretation of the critical zeros of zeta- and L-functions for a global field K using a space of square integrable functions on the space A_K/K* of adele classes. It is known that for K=Q the space A_K/K* cannot be understood classically, or in other words, the action of Q* on A_Q is ergodic. We prove that the same is true for any global field K, in both the number field and function field cases.
Over the last 25 years, the notion of "fuzzy spaces" has become ubiquitous in the high-energy physics literature. These are finite dimensional noncommutative approximations of the algebra of functions on a classical space. The most well known examples come from the Berezin quantization of coadjoint orbits of compact semisimple Lie groups. We develop a theory of Berezin quantization for certain quantum homogeneous spaces coming from ergodic actions of compact quantum groups. This allows us to construct fuzzy versions of these quantum homogeneous spaces. We show that the finite dimensional appro…
We prove that if $G$ is a countable discrete group with property (T) over an infinite subgroup $H<G$ which contains an infinite Abelian subgroup or is normal, then $G$ has continuum many orbit inequivalent measure preserving a.e. free ergodic actions on a standard Borel probability space. Further, we obtain that the measure preserving a.e. free ergodic actions of such a $G$ cannot be classified up to orbit equivalence be a reasonable assignment of countable structures as complete invariants. We also obtain a strengthening and a new proof of a non-classification result of Foreman and Weiss for …
The classical Gaussian functor associates to every orthogonal representation of a locally compact group $G$ a probability measure preserving action of $G$ called a Gaussian action. In this paper, we generalize this construction by associating to every affine isometric action of $G$ on a Hilbert space, a one-parameter family of nonsingular Gaussian actions whose ergodic properties are related in a very subtle way to the geometry of the original action. We show that these nonsingular Gaussian actions exhibit a phase transition phenomenon and we relate it to new quantitative invariants for affine…
Every affine isometric action $α$ of a group $G$ on a real Hilbert space gives rise to a nonsingular action $\hatα$ of $G$ on the associated Gaussian probability space. In the recent paper [AIM19], several results on the ergodicity and Krieger type of these actions were established when the underlying orthogonal representation $π$ of $G$ is mixing. We develop new methods to prove ergodicity when $π$ is only weakly mixing. We determine the type of $\hatα$ in full generality. Using Cantor measures, we give examples of type III$_1$ ergodic Gaussian actions of $\mathbb{Z}$ whose underlying represe…

We study equivalence relations that arise from translation actions $Γ\curvearrowright G$ which are associated to dense embeddings $Γ<G$ of countable groups into second countable locally compact groups. Assuming that $G$ is simply connected and the action $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is orbit equivalent to another such translation action $Λ\curvearrowright H$ if and only if there exists an isomorphism $δ:G\rightarrow H$ such that $δ(Γ)=Λ$. If $G$ is moreover a real algebraic group, then we establish analogous rigidity results for the translation…
We investigate the asymptotic structure of (possibly type III) crossed product von Neumann algebras $M = B \rtimes Γ$ arising from arbitrary actions $Γ\curvearrowright B$ of bi-exact discrete groups (e.g. free groups) on amenable von Neumann algebras. We prove a spectral gap rigidity result for the central sequence algebra $N' \cap M^ω$ of any nonamenable von Neumann subalgebra with normal expectation $N \subset M$. We use this result to show that for any strongly ergodic essentially free nonsingular action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ of any bi-exact countable discrete group on a standard proba…
