The notion of compact quantum subgroup is revisited and an alternative definition is given. Induced representations are considered and a Frobenius reciprocity theorem is obtained. A relationship between ergodic actions of compact quantum groups on C*-algebras and topological transitivity is investigated. A sufficient condition for embedding such actions in quantum quotient spaces is obtained.
We establish that particular quotients of the non-commutative Hardy algebras carry ergodic actions of convergent discrete subgroups of the group $\operatorname*{SU}(n,1)$ of automorphisms of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}% ^{n}$. To do so, we provide a mean to compute the spectra of quotients of noncommutative Hardy algebra and characterize their automorphisms in term of biholomorphic maps of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$.
We study embeddings of uniform Roe algebras which have "large range" in their codomain and the relation of those with coarse quotients between metric spaces. Among other results, we show that if $Y$ has property A and there is an embedding $Φ:\mathrm{C}^*_u(X)\to \mathrm{C}^*_u(Y)$ with "large range" and so that $Φ(\ell_\infty(X))$ is a Cartan subalgebra of $\mathrm{C}^*_u(Y)$, then there is a bijective coarse quotient $X\to Y$. This shows that the large scale geometry of $Y$ is, in some sense, controlled by the one of $X$. For instance, if $X$ has finite asymptotic dimension, so does $Y$.
An inclusion of von Neumann factors $M \subset \Cal M$ is {\it ergodic} if it satisfies the irreducibility condition $M'\cap \Cal M=\Bbb C$. We investigate the relation between this and several stronger ergodicity properties, such as $R$-{\it ergodicity}, which requires $M$ to admit an embedding of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor $R\hookrightarrow M$ that's ergodic in $\Cal M$. We prove that if $M$ is {\it continuous} (i.e., non type I) and contains a maximal abelian $^*$-subalgebra of $\Cal M$, then $M\subset \Cal M$ is $R$-ergodic. This shows in particular that any continuous factor contains a…
We prove that a quotient of subspace of $C_p\oplus_pR_p$ ($1\le p<2$) embeds completely isomorphically into a noncommutative $L_p$-space, where $C_p$ and $R_p$ are respectively the $p$-column and $p$-row Hilbertian operator spaces. We also represent $C_q$ and $R_q$ ($p<q\le2$) as quotients of subspaces of $C_p\oplus_pR_p$. Consequently, $C_q$ and $R_q$ embed completely isomorphically into a noncommutative $L_p(M)$. We further show that the underlying von Neumann algebra $M$ cannot be semifinite.
We develop theory of multiplicity maps for compact quantum groups, as an application, we obtain a complete classification of right coideal $C^*$-algebras of $C(SU_q(2))$ for $q\in [-1,1]\setminus \{0\}$. They are labeled with Dynkin diagrams, but classification results for positive and negative cases of $q$ are different. Many of the coideals are quantum spheres or quotient spaces by quantum subgroups, but we do have other ones in our classification list.
The spectral functor of an ergodic action of a compact quantum group G on a unital C*-algebra is quasitensor, in the sense that the tensor product of two spectral subspaces is isometrically contained in the spectral subspace of the tensor product representation, and the inclusion maps satisfy natural properties. We show that any quasitensor *-functor from Rep(G) to the category of Hilbert spaces is the spectral functor of an ergodic action of G on a unital C*-algebra. As an application, we associate an ergodic G-action on a unital C*-algebra to an inclusion of Rep(G) into an abstract tensor C*…
A probability measure preserving action of Γon (X,μ) is called rigid if the inclusion of L^\infty(X) into the crossed product L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γhas the relative property (T) in the sense of Popa. We give examples of rigid, free, probability measure preserving actions that are ergodic but not strongly ergodic. The same examples show that rigid actions may admit non-rigid quotients.
For any $n\geqslant 4$ let $\tilde B_n=B_n/Z(B_n)$ be the quotient of the braid group $B_n$ through its center. We prove that any free ergodic probability measure preserving (pmp) action $\tilde B_n\curvearrowright (X,μ)$ is W$^*$-superrigid in the following sense: if $L^{\infty}(X)\rtimes\tilde B_n\cong L^{\infty}(Y)\rtimesΛ$, for an arbitrary free ergodic pmp action $Λ\curvearrowright (Y,ν)$, then the actions $\tilde B_n\curvearrowright X,Λ\curvearrowright Y$ are stably (or, virtually) conjugate. Moreover, we prove that the same holds if $\tilde B_n$ is replaced with a finite index subgroup …
An operator system modulo the kernel of a completely positive linear map of the operator system gives rise to an operator system quotient. In this paper, operator system quotients and quotient maps of certain matrix algebras are considered. Some applications to operator algebra theory are given, including a new proof of Kirchberg's theorem on the tensor product of B(H) with the group C*-algebra of a countable free group. We also show that an affirmative solution to the Connes Embedding Problem is implied by various matrix-theoretic problems, and we give a new characterisation of unital C*-alge…
We generalize the notions of asymptotic dimension and coarse embeddings from metric spaces to quantum metric spaces in the sense of Kuperberg and Weaver. We show that quantum asymptotic dimension behaves well with respect to metric quotients and direct sums, and is preserved under quantum coarse embeddings. Moreover, we prove that a quantum metric space that equi-coarsely contains a sequence of reflexive quantum expanders must have infinite asymptotic dimension. This is done by proving a quantum version of a vertex-isoperimetric inequality for expanders, based upon a previously known edge-isop…
We study C*-algebras O_λ which arise in dynamics of the interval exchange transformations and measured foliations on compact surfaces. Using Koebe-Morse coding of geodesic lines, we establish a bijection between Bratteli diagrams of such algebras and measured foliations. This approach allows us to apply K-theory of operator algebras to prove strict ergodicity criterion and Keane's conjecture for the interval exchange transformations.
We consider a countable discrete group $G$ acting ergodicaly and a.e. freely, by measure-preserving transformations, on an infinite measure space $(\mathcal X,ν)$ with $σ$-finite measure $ν$. Let $Γ\subseteq G$ be an almost normal subgroup with fundamental domain $F\subseteq \mathcal X $ of finite measure. Let $\mathcal R_G$ be the countable measurable equivalence relation on $\mathcal X$ determined by the orbits of $G$. Let $\mathcal R_G| F$ be its restriction to $F$. We find an explicit presentation, by generators and relations, for the von Neumann algebra associated, by the Feldman-Moore (\…
We show that several important normal subgroups $Γ$ of the mapping class group of a surface satisfy the following property: any free, ergodic, probability measure preserving action $Γ\curvearrowright X$ is stably OE-superrigid. These include the central quotients of most surface braid groups and most Torelli groups and Johnson kernels. In addition, we show that all these groups satisfy the measure equivalence rigidity and we describe all their lattice-embeddings. Using these results in combination with previous results from [CIK13] we deduce that any free, ergodic, probability measure preservi…
Let $X$ be a discrete metric space with bounded geometry. We show that if $X$ admits an "A-by-CE coarse fibration", then the canonical quotient map $λ: C^*_{\max}(X)\to C^*(X)$ from the maximal Roe algebra to the Roe algebra of $X$, and the canonical quotient map $λ: C^*_{u, \max}(X)\to C^*_u(X)$ from the maximal uniform Roe algebra to the uniform Roe algebra of $X$, induce isomorphisms on $K$-theory. A typical example of such a space arises from a sequence of group extensions $\{1\to N_n\to G_n\to Q_n\to 1\}$ such that the sequence $\{N_n\}$ has Yu's property A, and the sequence $\{Q_n\}$ adm…
In the paper we completely describe characters (central positive-definite functions) of simple locally finite groups that can be represented as inductive limits of (products of) symmetric groups under block diagonal embeddings. Each such group $G$ defines an infinite graph (Bratteli diagram) that encodes the embedding scheme. The group $G$ acts on the space $X$ of infinite paths of the associated Bratteli diagram by changing initial edges of paths. Assuming the finiteness of the set of ergodic measures for the system $(X,G)$, we establish that each indecomposable character $χ:G \rightarrow \ma…
We study equivalence relations that arise from translation actions $Γ\curvearrowright G$ which are associated to dense embeddings $Γ<G$ of countable groups into second countable locally compact groups. Assuming that $G$ is simply connected and the action $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is orbit equivalent to another such translation action $Λ\curvearrowright H$ if and only if there exists an isomorphism $δ:G\rightarrow H$ such that $δ(Γ)=Λ$. If $G$ is moreover a real algebraic group, then we establish analogous rigidity results for the translation…
We prove the following extension of Tits' simplicity theorem. Let $k$ be an infinite field, $G$ an algebraic group defined and quasi-simple over $k,$ and $G(k)$ the group of $k$-rational points of $G.$ Let $G(k)^+$ be the subgroup of $G(k)$ generated by the unipotent radicals of parabolic subgroups of $G$ defined over $k$ and $PG(k)^+$ the quotient of $G(k)^+$ by its center. Then every normalized function of positive type on $PG(k)^+$ which is constant on conjugacy classes is a convex combination of $1_{PG(k)^+}$ and $δ_e.$ As corollary, we obtain that the only ergodic invariant random subgrou…
Let us say that a discrete countable group is stable if it has an ergodic, free, probability-measure-preserving and stable action. Let G be a discrete countable group with a central subgroup C. We present a sufficient condition and a necessary condition for G to be stable. We show that if the pair (G, C) does not have property (T), then G is stable. We also show that if the pair (G, C) has property (T) and G is stable, then the quotient group G/C is stable.
