Let $Γ$ be a finite subgroup of SU(2) and let $\widetilde Γ = \{γ_i\mid i\in J\}$ be the unitary dual of $Γ$. The unitary dual of SU(2) may be written $\{π_n\mid n\in \Bbb Z_+\}$ where $dim π_n = n+1$. For $n\in \Bbb Z_+$ and $j\in J$ let $m_{n,j}$ be the multiplicity of $γ_j$ in $π_n|Γ$. Then we collect this branching data in the formal power series, $m(t)_j = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}m_{n,j} t^n$. One shows that there exists a polynomial $z(t)_j$ and known positive integers $a,b$ (independent of $j$) such that $m(t)_j = {z(t)_j \over (1-t^a)(1-t^b)}$. The problem is the determination of the polynomial $z(t)_j$. If $o\in J$ is such that $γ_o$ is the trivial representation, then it is classical that $z(t)_o = 1 +t^h$ for a known integer $h$. The problem reduces to case where $γ_j$ is nontrivial. The McKay correspondence associates to $Γ$ a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$ of type A-D-E. We explicitly determine $z(t)_j$ for $j\in J-\{o\}$ using the orbits of a Coxeter element on the set of roots of $\frak{g}$. Mysteriously the polynomial $z(t)_j$ has arisen in a completely different context in some papers of Lusztig. Also Rossmann has recently shown that the polynomial $z(t)_j$ yields the character of $γ_j$.
We obtain vanishing ranges for the mod $p$ cohomology of alternating subgroups of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups. Here a Coxeter group $W$ is $p$-free if the order of the product $st$ is prime to $p$ for every pair of Coxeter generators $s,t$ of $W$. Our result generalizes those for alternating groups formerly proved by Kleshchev-Nakano and Burichenko. As a byproduct, we obtain vanishing ranges for the twisted cohomology of finite $p$-free Coxeter groups with coefficients in the sign representations. In addition, a weak version of the main result is proved for a certain class of infinite Coxet…

The imaginary cone of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra is the convex hull of zero and the positive imaginary roots. This paper studies the imaginary cone for a class of root systems of general Coxeter groups W. It is shown that the imaginary cone of a reflection subgroup of W is contained in that of W, and that for irreducible infinite W of finite rank, the closed imaginary cone is the only non-zero, closed, pointed W-stable cone contained in the pointed cone spanned by the simple roots. For W of finite rank, various natural notions of faces of the imaginary cone are shown to coincide, the face lattice…
Let $W_a$ be an affine Weyl group and $η:W_a\longrightarrow W_0$ be the natural projection to the corresponding finite Weyl group. We say that $w\in W_a$ has finite Coxeter part if $η(w)$ is conjugate to a Coxeter element of $W_0$. The elements with finite Coxeter part is a union of conjugacy classes of $W_a$. We show that for each conjugacy class $\mathcal{O}$ of $W_a$ with finite Coxeter part there exits a unique maximal proper parabolic subgroup $W_J$ of $W_a$, such that the set of minimal length elements in $\mathcal{O}$ is exactly the set of Coxeter elements in $W_J$. Similar results hold…
We study branching problem of the metaplectic representation of $Sp(2, \mathbb R)$ under its principle subgroup $SL(2, \mathbb R)$. We find the complete decomposition.
The permutation representation afforded by a Coxeter group W acting on the cosets of a standard parabolic subgroup inherits many nice properties from W such as a shellable Bruhat order and a flat deformation over Z[q] to a representation of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In this paper we define a larger class of ``quasiparabolic" subgroups (more generally, quasiparabolic W-sets), and show that they also inherit these properties. Our motivating example is the action of the symmetric group on fixed-point-free involutions by conjugation.
In this note, we provide a short and self-contained proof that the braid group on n strands acts transitively on the set of reduced factorizations of a Coxeter element in a Coxeter group of finite rank n into products of reflections. We moreover use the same argument to also show that all factorizations of an element in a parabolic subgroup of W lie as well in this parabolic subgroup.
A model for a finite group is a set of linear characters of subgroups that can be induced to obtain every irreducible character exactly once. A perfect model for a finite Coxeter group is a model in which the relevant subgroups are the quasiparabolic centralizers of perfect involutions. In prior work, we showed that perfect models give rise to interesting examples of $W$-graphs. Here, we classify which finite Coxeter groups have perfect models. Specifically, we prove that the irreducible finite Coxeter groups with perfect models are those of types $\mathsf{A}_{n}$, $\mathsf{B}_n$, $\mathsf{D}_…
Given $Γ$ a finite subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_3\mathbb{C}$, we determine how an arbitrary finite dimensional irreducible representation of $\mathbf{SL}_3\mathbb{C}$ decomposes under the action of $Γ$. To the subgroup $Γ$ we attach a generalized Cartan matrix $C_Γ$. Then, inspired by B. Kostant, we decompose the Coxeter element of the Kac-Moody algebra attached to $C_Γ$ as a product of reflections of a special form, thereby suggesting an algebraic form for the McKay correspondence in dimension 3.
By Theorem~1.12 of the paper "A Class of Representations of Hecke Algebras", if $W$ is a Coxeter group whose proper parabolic subgroups are finite, and if the module of a finite $W$-digraph $Γ$ is isomorphic to the module of a $W$-graph, then $Γ$ must be acyclic. Here we extend this result to Coxeter groups with finite dihedral parabolic subgroups and $W$-graphs with arbitrary scalar edge labels. Also, errata for the paper are listed in the last section.
The purpose of this paper is to prove Duflo's conjecture for $(G,π, AN)$ where $G$ is a simple Lie group of Hermitian type and $π$ is a discrete series of $G$ and $AN$ is the maximal exponential solvable subgroup for an Iwasawa decomposition $G=KAN$. This is essentially reduced from the following general theorem we prove in this paper: let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group . Then a strongly elliptic $G$-coadjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}$ is holomorphic if and only if $\text{p}(\mathcal{O})$ is an open $AN$-coadjoint orbit, where $\text{p} : \mathfrak{g}^* \longrightarrow (\mathfrak{a}\oplus\m…
A family of polynomials parameterized by the conjugacy classes of a finite Coxeter group is investigated. These polynomials, together with the character table of the group, determine the associated generic degrees. The polynomials are described completely for classes that meet a parabolic subgroup whose components are of type A or are dihedral, and for the class of Coxeter elements.
Let $W_0$ be a reflection subgroup of a finite complex reflection group $W$, and let $B_0$ and $B$ be their respective braid groups. In order to construct a Hecke algebra $\widetilde{H}_0$ for the normalizer $N_W(W_0)$, one first considers a natural subquotient $\widetilde{B}_0$ of $B$ which is an extension of $N_W(W_0)/W_0$ by $B_0$. We prove that this extension is split when $W$ is a Coxeter group, and deduce a standard basis for the Hecke algebra $\widetilde{H}_0$. We also give classes of both split and non-split examples in the non-Coxeter case.
We classify all quotients $W/W_J$ up to isomorphism in Bruhat order, with $(W,S)$ a Coxeter system and $W_J$ a parabolic subgroup of $W$. In particular, the non-trivial isomorphisms fall into a small number of cases which are highly restricted; all have $W$ finite and $W_J$ a maximal parabolic. This has the immediate application of classifying dominant and antidominant blocks of category $\mathcal O$ for Kac-Moody algebras up to equivalence.
Let $W$ be a Coxeter group whose proper parabolic subgroups are finite. According to Theorem~1.12 of [1], if the module of a finite $W$-digraph $Γ$ is isomorphic to the module of a $W$-graph over $Q$, then $Γ$ is acyclic. We extend this result to Coxeter groups with finite dihedral parabolic subgroups and $W$-graphs over arbitrary fields $F$ of $C$. Also, an example is provided showing the converse of this theorem is false. That is, there is an example of a finite, acyclic $W$-digraph whose module does not afford a $W$-graph.
We give a branching law for subgroups fixed by an involution. As an application we give a generalization of the Cartan-Helgason theorem and a noncompact analogue of the Borel-Weil theorem.
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, …
We study cells with respect to the $p$-canonical basis of the Hecke algebra of a crystallographic Coxeter system (see arXiv:1510.01556, arXiv:1901.02323) and their compatibility with standard parabolic subgroups. We show that after induction to the surrounding bigger Coxeter group the cell module of a right $p$-cell in a standard parabolic subgroup decomposes as a direct sum of cell modules. Along the way, we state some new positivity properties of the $p$-canonical basis.
For a classical group $G$ and a Coxeter element $c$ of the Weyl group, it is known that the coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[G^{e,c^2}]$ of the double Bruhat cell $G^{e,c^2}:=B\cap B_-c^2B_-$ has a structure of cluster algebra of finite type, where $B$ and $B_-$ are opposite Borel subgroups. In this article, we consider the case $G$ is of type ${\rm B}_r$, ${\rm C}_r$ or ${\rm D}_r$ and describe all the cluster variables in $\mathbb{C}[G^{e,c^2}]$ as monomial realizations of certain Demazure crystals.
We construct polyhedral families of valuations on the branching algebra of a morphism of reductive groups. This establishes a connection between the combinatorial rules for studying a branching problem and the tropical geometry of the branching algebra. In the special case when the branching problem comes from the inclusion of a Levi subgroup or a diagonal subgroup, we use the dual canonical basis of Lusztig and Kashiwara to build toric deformations of the branching algebra.
We introduce the notion of ideal triangle in the Bruhat-Tits building associated to a split group -- it is analogous to the usual notion of triangle, but one vertex is "at infinity" in a certain direction. We prove that the algebraic variety of based ideal triangles with prescribed side-lengths is naturally isomorphic to a suitable variety of genuine triangles. From theorems pertaining to genuine triangles, we deduce saturation theorems related to branching to Levi subgroups and to the constant term homomorphisms.
We refine a conjecture by Lehrer and Solomon on the structure of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ and relate it to the descent algebra of $W$. As a result, we claim that both the group algebra of $W$, as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of element centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. We give a uniform proof of the claim for symmetric groups. In addition, we prove that a relative version of the conjecture holds for every pair $(W, W_L)$, where $W$ is arbitrary and $W_…
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. …
Let (W,S) be a finite rank Coxeter system with W infinite. We prove that the limit weak order on the blocks of infinite reduced words of W is encoded by the topology of the Tits boundary of the Davis complex X of W. We consider many special cases, including W word hyperbolic, and X with isolated flats. We establish that when W is word hyperbolic, the limit weak order is the disjoint union of weak orders of finite Coxeter groups. We also establish, for each boundary point ξ, a natural order-preserving correspondence between infinite reduced words which "point towards" ξ, and elements of the ref…
