In this note, we provide a short and self-contained proof that the braid group on n strands acts transitively on the set of reduced factorizations of a Coxeter element in a Coxeter group of finite rank n into products of reflections. We moreover use the same argument to also show that all factorizations of an element in a parabolic subgroup of W lie as well in this parabolic subgroup.
We show that for a parabolic quasi-Coxeter element in an affine Coxeter group the Hurwitz action on its set of reduced factorizations into a product of reflections is transitive. We call an element of the Coxeter group parabolic quasi-Coxeter element if it has a reduced factorization into a product of reflections that generate a parabolic subgroup.
We show that the Hurwitz action is "as transitive as possible" on reflection factorizations of Coxeter elements in the well-generated complex reflection groups $G(d, 1, n)$ (the group of $d$-colored permutations) and $G(d, d, n)$.
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition on an element of a finite Coxeter group to ensure the transitivity of the Hurwitz action on its set of reduced decompositions into products of reflections. We show that this action is transitive if and only if the element is a parabolic quasi-Coxeter element, that is, if and only if it has a reduced decomposition into a product of reflections that generate a parabolic subgroup.
We investigate the so-called dual Matsumoto property or Hurwitz action in finite, affine and arbitrary Coxeter groups. In particular, we want to investigate how to reduce reflection factorizations and how two reflection factorizations of the same element are related to each other. We are motivated by the dual approach to Coxeter groups proposed by Bessis and the question whether there is an anlogue of the well known Matsumoto property for reflection factorizations. Our aim is a substantial understanding of the Hurwitz action. We therefore reprove uniformly results of Lewis and Reiner as well a…
In which it is proven that, for each parabolic quasi-Coxeter element in a finite real reflection group, the orbits of the Hurwitz action on its reflection factorizations are distinguished by the two obvious invariants
We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the…
We extend a result of Lewis and Reiner from finite Coxeter groups to all Coxeter groups by showing that two reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element lie in the same Hurwitz orbit if and only if they share the same multiset of conjugacy classes.
In this article, we study eigenvalue functions of varying transition probability matrices on finite, vertex transitive graphs. We prove that the eigenvalue function of an eigenvalue of fixed higher multiplicity has a critical point if and only if the corresponding spectral representation is equilateral. We also show how the geometric realisation of a finite Coxeter group as a reflection group can be used to obtain an explicit orthogonal system of eigenfunctions. Combining both results, we describe the behaviour of the spectral representations of the second highest eigenvalue function under the…
We enumerate Hurwitz orbits of shortest reflection factorizations of an arbitrary element in the infinite family $G(m, p, n)$ of complex reflection groups. As a consequence, we characterize the elements for which the action is transitive and give a simple criterion to tell when two shortest reflection factorizations belong to the same Hurwitz orbit. We also characterize the quasi-Coxeter elements (those with a shortest reflection factorization that generates the whole group) in $G(m, p, n)$.
In a finite real reflection group, two factorizations of a Coxeter element into an arbitrary number of reflections are shown to lie in the same orbit under the Hurwitz action if and only if they use the same multiset of conjugacy classes. The proof makes use of a surprising lemma, derived from a classification of the minimal linear dependences (matroid circuits) in finite root systems: any set of roots forming a minimal linear dependence with positive coefficients has a disconnected graph of pairwise acuteness.
Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple furth…
In this work we characterise Cayley graphs of Coxeter groups with respect to the standard generating set that admit uncountable vertex stabilisers. As a corollary, we fully identify finitely generated Coxeter groups for which the automorphism group of their Cayley graph with respect to the standard generating set is not discrete when equipped with the permutation topology. As an application, we also provide new explicit constructions of vertex-transitive graphs of infinite degree that have locally compact automorphism groups.
We study the buildings in which parallelism of residues is an equivalence relation. If the building admits a group action, we describe how parallel residues are related to residues with equal stabilizers. This permits to retrieve the fact that in a Coxeter group or in a graph product, intersections of parabolic subgroups are parabolic.
The classical Hurwitz numbers count the fixed-length transitive transposition factorizations of a permutation, with a remarkable product formula for the case of minimum length (genus $0$). We study the analogue of these numbers for reflection groups with the following generalization of transitivity: say that a reflection factorization of an element in a reflection group $W$ is full if the factors generate the whole group $W$. We compute the generating function for full factorizations of arbitrary length for an arbitrary element in a group in the combinatorial family $G(m, p, n)$ of complex ref…
The $S^2 \times R$ geometry can be derived by the direct product of the spherical plane $\bS^2$ and the real line $\bR$. J. Z. Farkas has classified and given the complete list of the space groups of $S^2 \times R$. The $S^2 \times R$ manifolds were classified by E. Molnár and J. Z. Farkas by similarity and diffeomorphism. In Szirmai we have studied the geodesic balls and their volumes in $S^2 \times R$ space, moreover we have introduced the notion of geodesic ball packing and its density and have determined the densest geodesic ball packing for generalized Coxeter space groups of $S^2 \times …
In this paper, we use combinatorial group theory and a limiting process to connect various types of hypergeometric series, and of relations among such series. We begin with a set $S$ of 56 distinct translates of a certain function $M$, which takes the form of a Barnes integral, and is expressible as a sum of two very-well-poised $_9F_8$ hypergeometric series of unit argument. We consider a known, transitive action of the Coxeter group $W(E_7)$ on this set. We show that, by removing from $W(E_7)$ a particular generator, we obtain a subgroup that is isomorphic to $W(D_6)$, and that acts intransi…
In this thesis, I am going to consider Bernoulli percolation on graphs admitting vertex-transitive actions of groups of isometries of d-dimensional hyperbolic spaces H^d. In the first chapter, I give an overview concerning percolation and its terminology. In the separate introduction to each of the other chapters, I explain its contents more precisely, giving also some preliminaries needed therein. In the second chapter, I prove the existence of a non-trivial non-uniqueness phase of Bernoulli percolation on Cayley graphs for a wide class of Coxeter reflection groups of finite type polyhedra in…
We consider a strictly developable simple complex of finite groups $G(\mathcal Q)$. We show that Bestvina's construction for Coxeter groups applies in this more general setting to produce a complex that is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the standard development. When $G(\mathcal Q)$ is non-positively curved, this implies that the Bestvina complex is a cocompact classifying space for proper actions of $G$ of minimal dimension. As an application, we show that for groups that act properly and chamber transitively on a building of type $(W, S)$, the dimension of the associated Bestvina compl…
Let $G$ be a group that admits a cocompact classifying space for proper actions $X$. We derive a formula for the Bredon cohomological dimension for proper actions of $G$ in terms of the relative cohomology with compact support of certain pairs of subcomplexes of $X$. We use this formula to compute the Bredon cohomological dimension for proper actions of fundamental groups of non-positively curved simple complexes of finite groups. As an application we show that if a virtually torsion-free group acts properly and chamber transitively on a building, its virtual cohomological dimension coincides …
In this paper we study different questions concerning automorphisms of quandles. For a conjugation quandle $Q={\rm Conj}(G)$ of a group $G$ we determine several subgroups of ${\rm Aut}(Q)$ and find necessary and sufficient conditions when these subgroups coincide with the whole group ${\rm Aut}(Q)$. In particular, we prove that ${\rm Aut}({\rm Conj}(G))={\rm Z}(G)\rtimes {\rm Aut}(G)$ if and only if either ${\rm Z}(G)=1$ or $G$ is one of the groups $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ or $\mathbb{Z}_3$. For a big list of Takasaki quandles $T(G)$ of an abelian group $G$ with $2$-torsion we prove th…
