We propose an algebraic geometric stability criterion for a polarised variety to admit an extremal Kaehler metric. This generalises conjectures by Yau, Tian and Donaldson which relate to the case of Kaehler-Einstein and constant scalar curvature metrics. We give a result in geometric invariant theory that motivates this conjecture, and an example computation that supports it.
We prove that the existence of extremal metrics implies asymptotically relative Chow stability. An application of this is the uniqueness, up to automorphisms, of extremal metrics in any polarization.
In this paper, by generalizing the concept of balanced metrics, we shall show that Donaldson's asymptotic approximation of balanced metrics for constant scalar curvature cases can be generalized to extremal Kaehler cases.
In this paper, we consider a compact Kahler manifold with extremal Kahler metric and a Mumford stable holomorphic bundle over it. We proved that, if the holomorphic vector field defining the extremal Kahler metric is liftable to the bundle and if the bundle is relatively stable with respect to the action of automorphisms of the manifold, then there exist extremal Kahler metrics on the projectivization of the dual vector bundle.
We provide a new proof of a result of X.X.Chen and G.Tian : for a polarized extremal Kähler manifold, an extremal metric attains the minimum of the modified K-energy. The proof uses an idea of C.Li adapted to the extremal metrics using some weighted balanced metrics.
We construct extremal metrics on the total space of certain destabilising test configurations for strictly semistable Kähler manifolds. This produces infinitely many new examples of manifolds admitting extremal Kähler metrics. It also shows for such metrics a new phenomenon of jumping of the complex structure along fibres.
We give a moment map interpretation of some relatively balanced metrics. As an application, we extend a result of S. K. Donaldson on constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics to the case of extremal metrics. Namely, we show that a given extremal metric is the limit of some specific relatively balanced metrics. As a corollary, we recover uniqueness and splitting results for extremal metrics in the polarized case.
We study algebro-geometric consequences of the quantised extremal Kähler metrics, introduced in the previous work of the author. We prove that the existence of quantised extremal metrics implies weak relative Chow polystability. As a consequence, we obtain asymptotic weak relative Chow polystability and $K$-semistability of extremal manifolds by using quantised extremal metrics; this gives an alternative proof of the results of Mabuchi and Stoppa--Székelyhidi. In proving them, we further provide an explicit local density formula for the equivariant Riemann--Roch theorem.
We consider the stability of Sasaki-extremal metrics under deformations of the complex structure on the Reeb foliation. Given such a deformation preserving the action of a compact subgroup of the automorphism group of a Sasaki-extremal structure, a sufficient condition is given involving the nondegeneracy of the relative Futaki invariant for the deformations to contain Sasaki-extremal structures. Deformations of Sasaki-Einstein metrics are also considered, where it suffices that the deformation preserve a maximal torus. As an application, new families of Sasaki-Einstein and Sasaki-extremal met…
We use the correspondence between extremal Sasaki structures and weighted extremal Kahler metrics defined on a regular quotient of a Sasaki manifold, established by the first two authors, and Lahdili's theory of weighted K-stability in order to define a suitable notion of (relative) weighted K-stability for compact Sasaki manifolds of regular type. We show that the (relative) weighted K-stability with respect to a maximal torus is a necessary condition for the existence of a (possibly irregular) extremal Sasaki metric. We also compare weighted K-stability to the K-stability of the correspondin…
Based on recent work of S. K. Donaldson and T. Mabuchi, we prove that any extremal Kaehler metric in the sense of E. Calabi, defined on the product of polarized compact complex projective manifolds is the product of extremal Kaehler metrics on each factor, provided that the integral Futaki invariants of the polarized manifold vanish or its automorphism group satisfies a constraint. This extends a result of S.-T. Yau about the splitting of a Kaehler-Einstein metric on the product of compact complex manifolds to the more general setting of extremal Kaehler metrics.
In this thesis we study the relationship between the existence of canonical metrics on a complex manifold and stability in the sense of geometric invariant theory. We introduce a modification of K-stability of a polarised variety which we conjecture to be equivalent to the existence of an extremal metric in the polarisation class. A variant for a complete extremal metric on the complement of a smooth divisor is also given. On toric surfaces we prove a Jordan-Holder type theorem for decomposing semistable surfaces into stable pieces. On a ruled surface we compute the infimum of the Calabi funct…
Consider a fibred compact Kähler manifold X endowed with a relatively ample line bundle, such that each fibre admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric and has discrete automorphism group. Assuming the base of the fibration admits a twisted extremal metric where the twisting form is a certain Weil-Petersson type metric, we prove that X admits an extremal metric for polarisations making the fibres small. Thus X admits a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric if and only if the Futaki invariant vanishes. This extends a result of Fine, who proved this result when the base admits no contin…
We develop a general theory for the existence of extremal Kähler metrics of Poincaré type in the sense of Auvray, defined on the complement of a toric divisor of a polarized toric variety. In the case when the divisor is smooth, we obtain a list of necessary conditions which must be satisfied for such a metric to exist. Using the explicit methods of Apostolov-Calderbank-Gauduchon together with the computational approach of Sektnan, we show that on a Hirzebruch complex surface the necessary conditions are also sufficient. In particular, on such a complex surface the complement of the infinity s…
The aim of this paper is to solve a uniform version of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture for polarized toric manifolds. Also, we show a combinatorial sufficient condition for uniform relative K-polystability.
Suppose that a polarised Kähler manifold $(X,L)$ admits an extremal metric $ω$. We prove that there exists a sequence of Kähler metrics $\{ ω_k \}_k$, converging to $ω$ as $k \to \infty$, each of which satisfies the equation $\bar{\partial} \text{grad}^{1,0}_{ω_k} ρ_k (ω_k)=0$; the $(1,0)$-part of the gradient of the Bergman function is a holomorphic vector field.
We show that any extremal contraction from a smooth projective variety with dimension less than or equal to three appears as a moduli space of (semi)stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
The Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for vector bundles, established by Donaldson, Kobayashi, Luebke, Uhlenbeck and Yau, states that an indecomposable holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold is stable in the sense of Takemoto-Mumford if and only if the vector bundle admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric. Its manifold analogue known as Yau's conjecture, which originated from Calabi's conjecture, asks whether ``stability'' and ``existence of extremal metrics'' for polarized manifolds are equivalent. In this note, the recent progress of this subject, by Donaldson, Tian and our grou…
We prove the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a nonsingular section of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(2, 5)\subset\mathbb{P}^9$ by a linear subspace of codimension 3, and the Fermat hypersurface of degree 6 in $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,2,3)$. We also show that a global log canonical threshold of the Mukai--Umemura variety is equal to 1/2.
This paper concerns the explicit construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on total spaces of projective bundles, which have been studied in many places. We present a unified approach, motivated by the theory of hamiltonian 2-forms (as introduced and studied in previous papers in the series) but this paper is largely independent of that theory. We obtain a characterization, on a large family of projective bundles, of those `admissible' Kaehler classes (i.e., the ones compatible with the bundle structure in a way we make precise) which contain an extremal Kaehler metric. In many cases, such as o…
We provide an explicit resolution of the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds M with second Betti number b2(M)=2. More precisely we show that M admits such a metric if and only if its rational Delzant polytope (which is a labelled quadrilateral) is K-polystable in the relative, toric sense (as studied by S. Donaldson, E. Legendre, G. Szekelyhidi et al.). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal Kaehler metric is ambitoric, i.e., compatible with a conformally equivalent, oppositely oriented toric Kaehler metric, which turns out to be extremal as well. These results…
Let $X$ be a compact toric extremal Kähler manifold. Using the work of Székelyhidi, we provide a combinatorial criterion on the fan describing $X$ to ensure the existence of complex deformations of $X$ that carry extremal metrics. As an example, we find new CSC metrics on 4-points blow-ups of $\C¶^1\times\C¶^1$.
The Einstein-Maxwell equations on a smooth compact 4-manifold are reformulated as a purely Riemannian variational problem analogous to Calabi's variational problem for extremal Kahler metrics. Next, Seiberg-Witten theory is used to show that these two problems are in fact intimately related. Extremal Kahler metrics are then used to probe the limits of Seiberg-Witten curvature estimates. The article then concludes with a brief survey of some recent results on extremal Kahler metrics.
Let $M=P(E)$ be the complex manifold underlying the total space of the projectivization of a holomorphic vector bundle $E \to Σ$ over a compact complex curve $Σ$ of genus $\ge 2$. Building on ideas of Fujiki, we prove that $M$ admits a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature if and only if $E$ is polystable. We also address the more general existence problem of extremal Kähler metrics on such bundles and prove that the splitting of $E$ as a direct sum of stable subbundles is necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of extremal Kähler metrics in sufficiently small Kähler classes.…
Let (X,Ω) be a closed polarized complex manifold, g be an extremal metric on X that represents the Kähler class Ω, and G be a compact connected subgroup of the isometry group Isom(X,g). Assume that the Futaki invariant relative to G is nondegenerate at g. Consider a smooth family $(M \to B)$ of polarized complex deformations of (X,Ω)\simeq (M_0,Θ_0) provided with a holomorphic action of G with trivial action on B. Then for every t\in B sufficiently small, there exists an h^{1,1}(X)-dimensional family of extremal Kaehler metrics on M_t whose Kähler classes are arbitrarily close to Θ_t. We apply…
In joint work with Chen and Weber, the author has elsewhere shown that CP2#2(-CP2) admits an Einstein metric. The present paper gives a new and rather different proof of this fact. Our results include new existence theorems for extremal Kahler metrics, and these allow one to prove the above existence statement by deforming the Kahler-Einstein metric on CP2#3(-CP2) until bubbling-off occurs.
In this note, we prove that on polarized toric manifolds the relative $K$-stability with respect to Donaldson's toric degenerations is a necessary condition for the existence of Calabi's extremal metrics, and also we show that the modified $K$-energy is proper in the space of $G_0$-invariant Kähler metrics for the case of toric surfaces which admit the extremal metrics.
In this paper, we study the behavior of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds under algebraic geometric surgeries: extremal transitions or flops. We prove a version of Candelas and de la Ossa's conjecture: Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds related by extremal transitions and flops can be connected by a path consisting of continuous families of Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds and a compact metric space in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In an essential step of the proof of our main result, the convergence of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds along a smoothing is establi…
