In this paper, we consider radial symmetry property of positive solutions of an integral equation arising from some higher order semi-linear elliptic equations on the whole space $\mathbf{R}^n$. We do not use the usual way to get symmetric result by using moving plane method. The nice thing in our argument is that we only need a Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type inequality. Our main result is Theorem 1 below.
In this paper, we introduce concepts of separable functions in balls and in the whole space, and develop a new method to investigate the qualitative properties of separable functions. We first study the axial symmetry and monotonicity of separable functions in unit circles by geometry analysis, and we prove the uniqueness of the symmetry axis for nontrivial separable functions. Then by using reduction dimension and convex analysis, we get the axial symmetry and monotonicity of separable functions in high dimensional spheres. Based on the above results on unit circles and spheres, we deduce the…
We consider the equation \[ -Δu = |x|^α |u|^{p-1}u, \ \ x \in B, \ \ u=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ \partial B, \] where $B \subset {\mathbb R}^2$ is the unit ball centered at the origin, $α\geq0$, $p>1$, and we prove some results on the Morse index of radial solutions. The contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, fixed the number of nodal sets $n\geq1$ of the solution $u_{α,n}$, we prove that the Morse index $m(u_{α,n})$ is monotone non-decreasing with respect to $α$. Secondly, we provide a lower bound for the Morse indices $m(u_{α, n})$, which shows that $m(u_{α, n}) \to +\infty$ as $α\to + …
This paper deals with solutions of semilinear elliptic equations of the type \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = f(|x|, u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, \\ u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $Ω$ is a radially symmetric domain of the plane that can be bounded or unbounded. We consider solutions $u$ that are invariant by rotations of a certain angle $θ$ and which have a bound on their Morse index in spaces of functions invariant by these rotations. We can prove that or $u$ is radial, or, else, there exists a direction $e\in \mathcal S$ such that $u$ is symmetric with respect to …
In this paper, we develop a sliding method for the fractional Laplacian. We first obtain the key ingredients needed in the sliding method either in a bounded domain or in the whole space, such as narrow region principles and maximum principles in unbounded domains. Then using semi-linear equations involving the fractional Laplacian in both bounded domains and in the whole space, we illustrate how this new sliding method can be employed to obtain monotonicity of solutions. Some new ideas are introduced. Among which, one is to use Poisson integral representation of $s$-subharmonic functions in d…
This paper is concerned about maximum principles and radial symmetry for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear partial differential equations. We obtain the radial symmetry and monotonicity properties for nonnegative viscosity solutions of begin{equation}F (D^2 u)+u^p=0 \quad \quad \mbox{in}\ \mathbb R^n \label{abs}\end{equation} under the asymptotic decay rate $u=o(|x|^{-\frac{2}{p-1}})$ at infinity, where $p>1$ (Theorem 1, Corollary 1). As a consequence of our symmetry results, we obtain the nonexistence of any nontrivial and nonnegative solution when $F$ is the Pucci extremal operators (Co…
We give a simple proof of the fact that for a large class of quasilinear elliptic equations and systems the solutions that minimize the corresponding energy in the set of all solutions are radially symmetric. We require just continuous nonlinearities and no cooperative conditions for systems. Thus, in particular, our results cannot be obtained by using the moving planes method. In the case of scalar equations, we also prove that any least energy solution has a constant sign and is monotone with respect to the radial variable.

In this paper the authors present a proof of a pointwise radial monotonicity property of heat kernels that is shared by the euclidean spaces, spheres and hyperbolic spaces. The main result deals with monotonicity from special points on revolution hypersurfaces from which the aforementioned are deduced. The proof relies on a non straightforward but elementary application of the parabolic maximum principle.
We consider degenerated nonlinear PDE of elliptic type: $$ - \mathrm{div}(a(|x|)|\nabla w(x)|^{p-2} \nabla w(x)) + h(|x|,w(x),\langle\nabla w(x),\frac{x}{|x|}\rangle)=ϕ(w(x)), $$ where $x$ belongs to the ball in $\bf{R}^n$. Using the argument based on Opial-type inequalities, we investigate qualitative properties of their radial solutions, like e.g. maximum principles, monotonicity, as well as nonexistence of the nontrivial solutions.
In this paper, we first establish a narrow region principle and a decay at infinity theorem to extend the direct method of moving planes for general fractional $p$-Laplacian systems. By virtue of this method, we can investigate the qualitative properties of the following Schrödinger system with fractional $p$-Laplacian \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{r@{\ \ }c@{\ \ }ll} \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{s}u+au^{p-1}& =&f(u,v), \\[0.05cm] \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{t}v+bv^{p-1}& =&g(u,v), \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $0<s,\,t<1$ and $2<p<\infty$. We obtain the radial symmetry in the unit ball o…
Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $0 < α< n.$ In this paper, we continue our study of the integral equation $$ u(x) = \int_{R^{n}} \frac{u(y)^{(n+α)(n-α)}{|x - y|^{n-α}}dy.$$ We mainly consider singular solutions in subcritical, critical, and super critical cases, and obtain qualitative properties, such as radial symmetry, monotonicity, and upper bounds for the solutions.
We consider a minimization problem that combines the Dirichlet energy with the nonlocal perimeter of a level set, namely $$ \int_\Om |\nabla u(x)|^2\,dx+\Per\Big(\{u > 0\},\Om \Big),$$ with $σ\in(0,1)$. We obtain regularity results for the minimizers and for their free boundaries $\p \{u>0\}$ using blow-up analysis. We will also give related results about density estimates, monotonicity formulas, Euler-Lagrange equations and extension problems.
For open radial sets $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 2$ we consider the nonlinear problem \[ (P)\quad Iu=f(|x|,u) \quad\text{in $Ω$,}\quad u\equiv 0\quad \text{on $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus Ω$ and }\lim_{|x|\to\infty} u(x)=0, \] where $I$ is a nonlocal operator and $f$ is a nonlinearity. Under mild symmetry and monotonicity assumptions on $I$, $f$ and $Ω$ we show that any continuous bounded solution of $(P)$ is axial symmetric once it satisfies a simple reflection inequality with respect to a hyperplane. In the special case where $f$ does not depend on $|x|$, we show that any nonnegative nontrivia…
We derive a monotonicity formula and classify finite Morse index solutions (positive or sign-changing, radial or not) to the following triharmonic Lane-Emden equation: \begin{equation}\nonumber (-Δ)^3 u=|u|^{p-1}u \hbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^n, \end{equation} where $p$ is below the Joseph-Lundgren exponent. As a byproduct we also obtain a new monotonicity formula for the triharmonic maps.
We prove all the maximizers of the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality are smooth. More generally, we show all the nonnegative critical functions are smooth, radial with respect to some points and strictly decreasing in the radial direction. In particular, this resolves all the cases left open by previous works of Chen, Li and Ou on the corresponding integral systems.
We study the global structure of the set of radial solutions of a nonlinear Dirichlet problem involving the p-Laplacian with p>2, in the unit ball of $R^N$, $N \ges 1$. We show that all non-trivial radial solutions lie on smooth curves of respectively positive and negative solutions and bifurcating from the line of trivial solutions. This involves a local bifurcation result of Crandall-Rabinowitz type, and global continuation arguments relying on monotonicity properties of the equation. An important part of the analysis is dedicated to the delicate issue of differentiability of the inverse p-L…
We consider the incompressible Euler equations in $R^2$ when the initial vorticity is bounded, radially symmetric and non-increasing in the radial direction. Such a radial distribution is stationary, and we show that the monotonicity produces stability in some weighted norm related to the angular impulse. For instance, it covers the cases of circular vortex patches and Gaussian distributions. Our stability does not depend on $L^\infty$-bound or support size of perturbations. The proof is based on the fact that such a radial monotone distribution minimizes the impulse of functions having the sa…
