Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $0 < α< n.$ In this paper, we continue our study of the integral equation $$ u(x) = \int_{R^{n}} \frac{u(y)^{(n+α)(n-α)}{|x - y|^{n-α}}dy.$$ We mainly consider singular solutions in subcritical, critical, and super critical cases, and obtain qualitative properties, such as radial symmetry, monotonicity, and upper bounds for the solutions.
This article carries out a qualitative analysis on a system of integral equations of the Hardy--Sobolev type. Namely, results concerning Liouville type properties and the fast and slow decay rates of positive solutions for the system are established. For a bounded and decaying positive solution, it is shown that it either decays with the slow rates or the fast rates depending on its integrability. Particularly, a criterion for distinguishing integrable solutions from other bounded and decaying solutions in terms of their asymptotic behavior is provided. Moreover, related results on the optimal…
In this paper, we are concerned with the quasilinear PDE with weight $$ -div A(x,\nabla u)=|x|^a u^q(x), \quad u>0 \quad \textrm{in} \quad R^n, $$ where $n \geq 3$, $q>p-1$ with $p \in (1,2]$ and $a \in (-n,0]$. The positive weak solution $u$ of the quasilinear PDE is $\mathcal{A}$-superharmonic and satisfies $\inf_{R^n}u=0$. We can introduce an integral equation involving the wolff potential $$ u(x)=R(x) W_{β,p}(|y|^au^q(y))(x), \quad u>0 \quad \textrm{in} \quad R^n, $$ which the positive solution $u$ of the quasilinear PDE satisfies. Here $p \in (1,2]$, $q>p-1$, $β>0$ and $0 \leq -a<pβ<n$. W…
We consider positive singular solutions to semilinear elliptic problems with possibly singular nonlinearity. We deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of the solutions via the moving plane procedure.
We consider radial solutions of an elliptic equation involving the p-Laplace operator and prove by a shooting method the existence of compactly supported solutions with any prescribed number of nodes. The method is based on a change of variables in the phase plane corresponding to an asymptotic Hamiltonian system and provides qualitative properties of the solutions.
This is a continuation of our series of works for the inhomogeneous Boltzmann equation. We study qualitative properties of classical solutions, precisely, the full regularization in all variables, uniqueness, non-negativity and convergence rate to the equilibrium. Together with the results of Parts I and II about the well posedness of the Cauchy problem around Maxwellian, we conclude this series with a satisfactory mathematical theory for Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff.
We prove the existence, qualitative properties and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to the doubly critical problem $$ (-Δ)^s u=\vartheta\frac{u}{|x|^{2s}}+u^{2_s^*-1}, \quad u\in \dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^N).$$ The technique that we use to prove the existence is based on variational arguments. The qualitative properties are obtained by using of the moving plane method, in a nonlocal setting, on the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ and by some comparison results. Moreover, in order to find the asymptotic behavior of solutions, we use a representation result that allows to transform the original problem…
This paper is devoted to some qualitative descriptions and some numerical results for ergodic Mean Field Games systems which arise, e.g., in the homogenization with a small noise limit. We shall consider either power type potentials or logarithmic type ones. In both cases, we shall establish some qualitative properties of the effective Hamiltonian $\bar H$ and of the effective drift $\bar b$. In particular we shall provide two cases where the effective system keeps/looses the Mean Field Games structure, namely where $\nabla_P \bar H(P,α)$ coincides or not with $\bar b(P, α)$. On the other hand…
In this paper we study multiplicity and qualitative behavior of solutions for semilinear elliptic problems with neumann boundary condition and asymptotically linear smooth nonlinearity. We provide sufficient conditions on the number of eigenvalues the derivative of the nonlinearity crosses to guarantee existence of at least five nontrivial solutions. The techniques we use are a combination of minimization, Leray-Schauder degree, Morse Theory and Reduction method a la Castro-Lazer.
We consider a fourth-order extension of the Allen-Cahn model with mixed-diffusion and Navier boundary conditions. Using variational and bifurcation methods, we prove results on existence, uniqueness, positivity, stability, a priori estimates, and symmetry of solutions. As an application, we construct a nontrivial bounded saddle solution in the plane.
In this paper we consider an optimal control problem for a large population of interacting agents with deterministic dynamics, aggregating potential and constraints on reciprocal distances, in dimension 1. We study existence and qualitative properties of periodic in time optimal trajectories of the finite agents optimal control problem, with particular interest on the compactness of the solutions' support and on the saturation of the distance constraint. Moreover, we prove, through a $Γ$-convergence result, the consistency of the mean-field optimal control problem with density constraints with…
We are interested in the qualitative properties of solutions of the Hénon type equations with exponential nonlinearity. First, we classify the stable at infinity solutions of $Δu +|x|^αe^u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, which gives a complete answer to the problem considered in [Wang-Ye]. Secondly, existence and precise asymptotic behaviors of entire radial solutions to $Δ^2 u=|x|^α e^u$ are obtained. Then we classify the stable and stable at infinity radial solutions to $Δ^2 u=|x|^α e^u$ in any dimension.
In this paper we study a semilinear elliptic problem on a bounded domain in $\R^2$ with large exponent in the nonlinear term. We consider positive solutions obtained by minimizing suitable functionals. We prove some asymtotic estimates which enable us to associate a "limit problem" to the initial one. Usong these estimates we prove some quantitative properties of the solution, namely characterization of level sets and nondegeneracy.
This paper is concerned with the ergodic problem for superquadratic viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations with exponent m \textgreater{} 2. We prove that the generalized principal eigenvalue of the equation converges to a constant as m $\rightarrow$ $\infty$, and that the limit coincides with the generalized principal eigenvalue of an ergodic problem with gradient constraint. We also investigate some qualitative properties of the generalized principal eigenvalue with respect to a perturbation of the potential function. It turns out that different situations take place according to m = 2, 2 \textle…
We study the qualitative properties of a spatial diffusive heterogeneous SIR model, that appears in mathematical epidemiology to describe the spread of an infectious disease in a population. The model we consider consists in a system of parabolic PDEs. In the first part of the paper, we give a criterion that ensures whether or not an epidemic propagates in a given population. We show how the features of the disease and of the population (rates of infection and of recovery, localisation and diffusivity of individuals) influence the propagation of the epidemic. In particular, we prove that there…
We prove some qualitative properties for singular solutions to a class of strongly coupled system involving a Gross--Pitaevskii-type nonlinearity. Our main theorems are vectorial fourth order counterparts of the classical results of [J. Serrin, Acta Math. (1964)], [P.-L. Lions, J. Differential Equations (1980)], [P. Aviles, Comm. Math. Phys. (1987)], and [B. Gidas and J. Spruck, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1981)]. On the technical level, we use the moving sphere method to classify the limit blow-up solutions to our system. Besides, applying asymptotic analysis techniques, we show that these soluti…
We study the symmetry properties of limit profiles of nonautonomous nonlinear parabolic systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions in radial bounded domains. In the case of competitive systems, we show that if the initial profiles satisfy a reflectional inequality with respect to a hyperplane, then all limit profiles are foliated Schwarz symmetric with respect to antipodal points. One of the main ingredients in the proof is a new parabolic version of Serrin's boundary point lemma. Results on radial symmetry of semi-trivial profiles are discussed also for noncompetitive systems.
This paper is concerned with the qualitative properties of the solutions of mixed integro-differential equation \begin{equation}\label{eq 1} \left\{ \arraycolsep=1pt \begin{array}{lll} (-Δ)_x^α u+(-Δ)_y u+u=f(u)\quad \ \ {\rm in}\ \ \R^N\times\R^M, u>0\ \ {\rm{in}}\ \R^N\times\R^M,\ \ \quad \lim_{|(x,y)|\to+\infty}u(x,y)=0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} with $N\ge 1$, $M\ge 1$ and $α\in (0,1)$. We study decay and symmetry properties of the solutions to this equation. Difficulties arise due to the mixed character of the integro-differential operators. Here, a crucial role is played by a ve…
In this paper, we mainly consider the initial boundary problem for a quasilinear parabolic equation \[ u_t-\mathrm{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u\right)=-|u|^{β-1}u+α|u|^{q-2}u, \] where $p>1,β>0$, $q\geq1$ and $α>0$. By using Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality, energy method and comparison principle, the phenomena of blowup and extinction are classified completely in the different ranges of reaction exponents.
In this article we consider the nonlinear system involving the $p$-Laplacian $$\left\{\begin{array}{lc} |u^\prime |^{p-2} u^{\prime \prime} = u^{p-1} v^p& |v^\prime |^{p-2} v^{\prime \prime} = v^{p-1} u^p&\ {\rm on} \ \R, u\geq 0, v\geq 0& \end{array}\right.$$ for which we prove symmetry, asymptotic behavior and non degeneracy properties. This can help to a better understanding to what happens in the $N$ dimensional case, for which several authors prove a De Giorgi Type result under some additional growth and monotonicity assumptions.
In this article, we are interested in a non-monotone system of logistic reaction-diffusion equations. This system of equations models an epidemics where two types of pathogens are competing, and a mutation can change one type into the other with a certain rate. We show the existence of minimal speed travelling waves, that are usually non monotonic. We then provide a description of the shape of those constructed travelling waves, and relate them to some Fisher-KPP fronts with non-minimal speed.
We studied the asymptotic behavior of local solutions for strongly coupled critical elliptic systems near an isolated singularity. For the dimension less than or equal to five we prove that any singular solution is asymptotic to a rotationally symmetric Fowler type solution. This result generalizes the celebrated work due to Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck [1] who studied asymptotic proprieties to the classic Yamabe equation. In addition, we generalize similar results by Marques [11] for inhomogeneous context, that is, when the metric is not necessarily conformally flat.
In this paper, we consider the following nonlinear system involving the fractional Laplacian \begin{equation} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u (x)= f(u,\,v), \\ (-Δ)^{s} v (x)= g(u,\,v), \end{array} \right. (1) \end{equation} in two different types of domains, one is bounded, and the other is unbounded, where $0<s<1$. To investigate the qualitative properties of solutions for fractional equations, the conventional methods are extension method and moving planes method. However, the above methods have technical limits in asymmetric and convex domains and so on. In this work, we employ the dir…
We study a mathematical model of environments populated by both preys and predators, with the possibility for predators to actively compete for the territory. For this model we study existence and uniqueness of solutions, and their asymptotic properties in time, showing that the solutions have different behavior depending on the choice of the parameters. We also construct heterogeneous stationary solutions and study the limits of strong competition and abundant resources. We then use these information to study some properties such as the existence of solutions that maximize the total populatio…

We investigate the properties of traveling wave solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws augmented with diffusion and dispersion, and review the existence and qualitative properties of the associated kinetic functions, which characterize the class of admissible shock waves selected by such regularizations.
In this paper, we have introduced the Prabhakar fractional $q$-integral and $q$-differential operators. We first study the semi-group property of the Prabhakar fractional $q$-integral operator, which allowed us to introduce the corresponding $q$-differential operator. Formulas for compositions of $q$-integral and $q$-differential operators are also presented. We show the boundedness of the Prabhakar fractional $q$-integral operator in the class of $q$-integrable functions.
We study vector minimizers u of the Allen-Cahn functional with potentials possessing N global minima defined on bounded domains, with certain geometrical features and Dirichlet conditions on the boundary. We derive a sharp lower bound for the energy (as ε{\rightarrow} 0) with the additional feature that it involves half of the gradient and part of the domain. Based on this we derive very precise (in ε) pointwise estimates up to the boundary for uε. Depending on the geometry of the domain uε exhibits either boundary layers or internal layers. We do not impose symmetry hypotheses.
In this paper, we study the interaction between a nonlinear focusing Robin type boundary source, a nonlinear defocusing interior source, and a weak damping term for nonlinear Schrödinger equations posed on the infinite half line. We construct solutions with negative initial energy satisfying a certain set of conditions which blow-up in finite time in the $H^1$-sense. We obtain a sufficient condition relating the powers of nonlinearities present in the model which allows construction of blow-up solutions. In addition to the blow-up property, we also discuss the stabilization property and the cr…
The objective of this paper is to obtain qualitative characteristics of multi-bubble solutions to the Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with slightly subcritical exponents given any dimension $n \ge 3$. By examining the linearized problem at each $m$-bubble solution, we provide a number of estimates on the first $(n+2)m$-eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenfunctions. Specifically, we present a new proof of the classical theorem due to Bahri-Li-Rey (Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 3 (1995) 67-93) which states that if $n \ge 4$, then the Morse index of a multi-bubble solution is governe…
We consider nonnegative solutions to $-Δu=f(u)$ in unbounded euclidean domains, where $f$ is merely locally Lipschitz continuous and satisfies $f(0)<0$. In the half-plane, and without any other assumption on $u$, we prove that $u$ is either one-dimensional and periodic or positive and strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary. Analogous results are obtained if the domain is a strip. As a consequence of our main results, we answer affirmatively to a conjecture and to an open question posed by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg. We also obtain some symmetry and m…
We consider a semilinear elliptic problem [- Δu + u = (I_α\ast \abs{u}^p) \abs{u}^{p - 2} u \quad\text{in (\mathbb{R}^N),}] where (I_α) is a Riesz potential and (p>1). This family of equations includes the Choquard or nonlinear Schrödinger-Newton equation. For an optimal range of parameters we prove the existence of a positive groundstate solution of the equation. We also establish regularity and positivity of the groundstates and prove that all positive groundstates are radially symmetric and monotone decaying about some point. Finally, we derive the decay asymptotics at infinity of the groun…
We consider a family of integral operators which appears when analyzing layered equilibria and front dynamics of a phase kinetics equation with a conservation law. We study the spectra of these operators in $L^2$ and derive a lower bound for the associated quadratic forms in terms of the $H^{-1}$ norm.
The purpose of this paper is to study basic property of the operator $$\mathcal{L}_{μ_1,μ_2} u=-Δ+\frac{μ_1 }{|x|^2}x\cdot\nabla +\frac{μ_2 }{|x|^2},$$ which generates at the origin due to the critical gradient and the Hardy term, where $μ_1,μ_2$ are free parameters. This operator arises from the critical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality. We analyze the fundamental solutions in a weighted distributional identity and obtain the Liouville theorem for the Lane-Emden equation with that operator, by using the classification of isolated singular solutions of the related Poisson problem in a boun…
We introduce and study a new canonical integral, denoted $I_{+-}^{\varepsilon}$, depending on two complex parameters $α_1$ and $α_2$. It arises from the canonical problem of wave diffraction by a quarter-plane, and is heuristically constructed to capture the complex field near the tip and edges. We establish some region of analyticity of this integral in $\mathbb{C}^2$, and derive its rich asymptotic behaviour as $|α_1|$ and $|α_2 |$ tend to infinity. We also study the decay properties of the function obtained from applying a specific double Cauchy integral operator to this integral. These res…
We study the dependence of least nontrivial critical levels of the energy functional corresponding to the zero Dirichlet problem $-Δ_p u = f(u)$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ upon domain perturbations. Assuming that the nonlinearity $f$ is superlinear and subcritical, we establish Hadamard-type formulas for such critical levels. As an application, we show that among all (generally eccentric) spherical annuli $Ω$ least nontrivial critical levels attain maximum if and only if $Ω$ is concentric. As a consequence of this fact, we prove the nonradiality of least energy nodal solutions…

We study decay and compact support properties of positive and bounded solutions of $Δ_{p} u \geq Λ(u)$ on the exterior of a compact set of a complete manifold with rotationally symmetry. In the same setting, we also give a new characterization of stochastic completeness for the $p$-Laplacian in terms of a global $W^{1,p}$-regularity of such solutions. One of the tools we use is a nonlinear version of the Feller property which we investigate on general Riemannian manifolds and which we establish under integral Ricci curvature conditions.
We review and extend here some recent results on the existence of minimal surfaces and isoperimetric sets in non homogeneous and anisotropic periodic media. We also describe the qualitative properties of the homogenized surface tension, also known as stable norm (or minimal action) in Weak KAM theory. In particular we investigate its strict convexity and differentiability properties.
We apply functional analytical and variational methods in order to study well-posedness and qualitative properties of evolution equations on product Hilbert spaces. To this aim we introduce an algebraic formalism for matrices of sesquilinear mappings. We apply our results to parabolic problems of different nature: a coupled diffusive system arising in neurobiology, a strongly damped wave equation, a heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions, and a general semilinear Hodgkin--Huxley sytem.
The qualitative properties of local random invariant manifolds for stochastic partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities and multiplicative noise is studied by a cut off technique. By a detail estimates on the Perron fixed point equation describing the local random invariant manifold, the structure near a bifurcation is given.
In this paper, properties of a recently proposed mathematical model for data flow in large-scale asynchronous computer systems are analyzed. In particular, the existence of special weak solutions based on propagating fronts is established. Qualitative properties of these solutions are investigated, both theoretically and numerically.
We study existence, uniqueness and stability of radial solutions of the Lane-Emden-Fowler equation $-Δ_g u=|u|^{p-1}u$ in a class of Riemannian models $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\ge 3$ which includes the classical hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$ as well as manifolds with sectional curvatures unbounded below. Sign properties and asymptotic behavior of solutions are influenced by the critical Sobolev exponent while the so-called Joseph-Lundgren exponent is involved in the stability of solutions.
We study the flow of an incompressible liquid film down a wavy incline. Applying a Galerkin method with only one ansatz function to the Navier-Stokes equations we derive a second order weighted residual integral boundary layer equation, which in particular may be used to describe eddies in the troughs of the wavy bottom. We present numerical results which show that our model is qualitatively and quantitatively accurate in wide ranges of parameters, and we use the model to study some new phenomena, for instance the occurrence of a short wave instability for laminar flows which does not exist ov…
We consider a system consisting of a geometric evolution equation for a hypersurface and a parabolic equation on this evolving hypersurface. More precisely, we discuss mean curvature flow scaled with a term that depends on a quantity defined on the surface coupled to a diffusion equation for that quantity. Several properties of solutions are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on to what extent the surface in our setting qualitatively evolves similar as for the usual mean curvature flow. To this end, we show that the surface area is strictly decreasing but give an example of a surface that exists for…
We investigate the equation $$(-Δ_{\mathbb H^n})^γ w=f(w)\quad in \mathbb H^{n},$$ where $(-Δ_{\mathbb H^n})^γ$ corresponds to the fractional Laplacian on hyperbolic space for $γ\in (0,1)$ and $f$ is a smooth nonlinearity that typically comes from a double well potential. We prove the existence of heteroclinic connections in the following sense; a so-called layer solution is a smooth solution of the previous equation converging to $\pm 1$ at any point of the two hemispheres $S_\pm \subset \partial_\infty \mathbb H^n$ and which is strictly increasing with respect to the signed distance to a tot…
