We obtain monotonicity and convexity results for the heat content of domains in Riemannian manifolds and in Euclidean space subject to various initial temperature conditions. We introduce the notion of a strictly decreasing temperature set, and show that it is a sufficient condition to ensure monotone heat content. In addition, in Euclidean space, we construct a domain and an initial condition for which the heat content is not monotone, as well as a domain and an initial condition for which the heat content is monotone but not convex.
We study the heat content function, the heat trace function, and questions of isospectrality for the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a compact manifold with smooth boundary in the context of finite coverings and warped products.
We show in the smooth category that the heat trace asymptotics and the heat content asymptotics can be made to grow arbitrarily rapidly. In the real analytic context, however, this is not true and we establish universal bounds on their growth.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. Let D be a compact subdomain of M with smooth boundary. We examine the heat content asymptotics for the heat flow from D into M where both the initial temperature and the specific heat are permitted to have controlled singularities on the boundary of D. The operator driving the heat process is assumed to be an operator of Laplace type
We study the asymptotic behavior of the heat content on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and with singular specific heat and singular initial temperature distributions imposing Robin boundary conditions. Assuming the existence of a complete asymptotic series we determine the first three terms in that series. In addition to the general setting, the interval is studied in detail as are recursion relations among the coefficients and the relationship between the Dirichlet and Robin settings.

We study the heat content asymptotics with either Dirichlet or Robin boundary conditions where the initial temperature exhibits radial blowup near the boundary. We show that there is a complete small-time asymptotic expansion and give explicit geometrical formulas for the first few terms in the expansion.
Let $D$ be a bounded, connected, open set in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with polygonal boundary. Suppose $D$ has initial temperature $1$ and the complement of $D$ has initial temperature $0$. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the heat content of $D$ as time $t \downarrow 0$. We then apply this result to compute the heat content of a particular fractal polyhedron as $t \downarrow 0$.
We obtain (i) lower and upper bounds for the heat content of an open set in $\mathbb{R}^m$ with $R$-smooth boundary and finite Lebesgue measure, (ii) a necessary and sufficient geometric condition for finiteness of the heat content in $\mathbb{R}^m$, and corresponding lower and upper bounds, (iii) lower and upper bounds for the heat loss of an open set in $\mathbb{R}^m$ with finite Lebesgue measure.
Let $Ω$ be an open set in a complete, smooth, non-compact, $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary, where $M$ satisfies a two-sided Li-Yau gaussian heat kernel bound. It is shown that if $Ω$ has infinite measure, and if $Ω$ has finite heat content $H_Ω(T)$ for some $T>0$, then $H_Ω(t)<\infty$ for all $t>0$. Comparable two-sided bounds for $H_Ω(t)$ are obtained for such $Ω$.
In this short paper, we derive an alternative proof for some known [van den Berg & Gilkey 2015] short-time asymptotics of the heat content in compact full-dimensional submanifolds $S$ with smooth boundary. This includes formulae like \begin{equation*} \int_{S} \exp(tΔ)\left( f \mathbb 1_S\right)\, \mathrm{d}x = \int_S f \,\mathrm{d}x - \sqrt{\frac{t}π} \int_{\partial S} f \,\mathrm{d}A + o(\sqrt t),\quad t \rightarrow 0\,. \end{equation*} and (partially new) explicit expressions for similar expansions involving other powers of $\sqrt t$. By the same method, we also obtain short-time asymptotic…
We discuss the heat content asymptotics associated with the heat flow out of a smooth compact manifold in a larger compact Riemannian manifold. Although there are no boundary conditions, the corresponding heat content asymptotics involve terms localized on the boundary. The classical pseudo-differential calculus is used to establish the existence of the complete asymptotic series and methods of invariance theory are used to determine the first few terms in the asymptotic series in terms of geometric data. The operator driving the heat process is assumed to be an operator of Laplace type.
We obtain upper bounds on the heat content and on the torsional rigidity of a complete Riemannian manifold M, assuming a generalized Hardy inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian on M.
We study and classify smooth bounded domains in an analytic Riemannian manifold which are critical for the heat content at all times t>0. We do that by first computing the first variation of the heat content, and then showing that a domain is critical if and only if it has the so-called constant flow property, so that we can use a previous classification result established by the author. The outcome is that a domain is critical for the heat content at all times if and only if it admits an isoparametric foliation, that is, a foliation whose leaves are all parallel to the boundary and have const…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of qualitative properties of flux-saturated type operators in dimension one. Specifically, we study regularity properties and smoothing effects, discontinuous interfaces, the existence of traveling wave profiles, sub- and super-solutions and waiting time features. The aim of the paper is to better understand these kind of phenomena throughout two prototypic operators: The relativistic heat equation and the porous media flux-limited equation. As an important consequence of our results we deduce that solutions to the one-dimensional relativistic heat equatio…
We consider sub-Laplacians in open bounded sets in a homogeneous Carnot group and study their spectral properties. We prove that these operators have a pure point spectrum, and prove the existence of the spectral gap. In addition, we give applications to the small ball problem for a hypoelliptic Brownian motion and the large time behavior of the heat content in a regular domain.
Let $Ω$ be an open set in a geodesically complete, non-compact, $m$-dimen-sional Riemannian manifold $M$ with non-negative Ricci curvature, and without boundary. We study the heat flow from $Ω$ into $M-Ω$ if the initial temperature distribution is the characteristic function of $Ω$. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition which ensures that an open set $Ω$ with infinite measure has finite heat content for all $t>0$. We also obtain upper and lower bounds for the heat content of $Ω$ in $M$. Two-sided bounds are obtained for the heat loss of $Ω$ in $M$ if the measure of $Ω$ is finite.
We study the relativistic heat equation in one space dimension. We prove a local regularity result when the initial datum is locally Lipschitz in its support. We propose a numerical scheme that captures the known features of the solutions and allows for analysing further properties of their qualitative behavior.
In this paper, we prove first-order asymptotics on a bounded open set of the heat content when the ambient space is an ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ space, under a regularity condition for the boundary that we call measured interior geodesic condition of size $ε$. We carefully study such a condition, relating it to the properties of the disintegration of the signed distance function from $\partial Ω$ studied by Cavalletti and Mondino.
Let $\mathbf{X}=\{X_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ be a Lévy process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and $Ω$ be an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with finite Lebesgue measure. In this article we consider the quantity $H(t)=\int_Ω \mathbb{P}^x (X_t\inΩ^c) \, \mathrm{d}x$ which is called the heat content. We study its asymptotic expansion for isotropic $α$-stable Lévy processes and more general Lévy processes, under mild assumptions on the characteristic exponent.
We study some qualitative properties of ancient solutions of superlinear heat equations on a Riemannian manifold, with particular interest in positivity and constancy in space.
We study the heat flow from an open, bounded set $D$ in $\R^2$ with a polygonal boundary $\partial D$. The initial condition is the indicator function of $D$. A Dirichlet $0$ boundary condition has been imposed on some but not all of the edges of $\partial D$. We calculate the heat content of $D$ in $\R^2$ at $t$ up to an exponentially small remainder as $t\downarrow 0$.
We investigate the heat flow in an open, bounded set $D$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with polygonal boundary $\partial D$. We suppose that $D$ contains an open, bounded set $\widetilde{D}$ with polygonal boundary $\partial \widetilde{D}$. The initial condition is the indicator function of $\widetilde{D}$ and we impose a Neumann boundary condition on the edges of $\partial D$. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the heat content of $\widetilde{D}$ in $D$ as time $t\downarrow 0$.
In this note we analyse \emph{quantitative} approximation properties of a certain class of \emph{nonlocal} equations: Viewing the fractional heat equation as a model problem, which involves both \emph{local} and \emph{nonlocal} pseudodifferential operators, we study quantitative approximation properties of solutions to it. First, relying on Runge type arguments, we give an alternative proof of certain \emph{qualitative} approximation results from \cite{DSV16}. Using propagation of smallness arguments, we then provide bounds on the \emph{cost} of approximate controllability and thus quantify th…
We generalize leading-order asymptotics of a form of the heat content of a submanifold (van den Berg & Gilkey 2015) to the setting of time-dependent diffusion processes in the limit of vanishing diffusivity. Such diffusion processes arise naturally when advection-diffusion processes are viewed in Lagrangian coordinates. We prove that as diffusivity $\varepsilon$ goes to zero, the diffusive transport out of a material set $S$ under the time-dependent, mass-preserving advection-diffusion equation with initial condition given by the characteristic function $\mathds{1}_S$, is $\sqrt{\varepsilon/π}…
In this paper we study the time differential dual-phase-lag model of heat conduction incorporating the microstructural interaction effect in the fast-transient process of heat transport. We analyse the influence of the delay times upon some qualitative properties of the solutions of the initial boundary value problems associated to such a model. Thus, the uniqueness results are established under the assumption that the conductivity tensor is positive definite and the delay times $τ_q$ and $τ_T$ vary in the set $\{0\leq τ_q\leq 2τ_T\}\cup \{0<2τ_T< τ_q\}$. For the continuous dependence problem …
This paper concerns with the heat equation in the half-space $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$ with nonlinearity and singular potential on the boundary $\partial\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$. We develop a well-posedness theory (without using Kato and Hardy inequalities) that allows us to consider critical potentials with infinite many singularities and anisotropy. Motivated by potential profiles of interest, the analysis is performed in weak $L^{p}$-spaces in which we prove key linear estimates for some boundary operators arising from the Duhamel integral formulation in $\mathbb{R}_{+}^{n}$. Moreover, we investigate…
We apply functional analytical and variational methods in order to study well-posedness and qualitative properties of evolution equations on product Hilbert spaces. To this aim we introduce an algebraic formalism for matrices of sesquilinear mappings. We apply our results to parabolic problems of different nature: a coupled diffusive system arising in neurobiology, a strongly damped wave equation, a heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions, and a general semilinear Hodgkin--Huxley sytem.
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
We consider a heat problem with discontinuous diffusion coefficientsand discontinuous transmission boundary conditions with a resistancecoefficient. For all compact $(ε,δ)$-domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with a $d$-set boundary (for instance, aself-similar fractal), we find the first term of the small-timeasymptotic expansion of the heat content in the complement of$Ω$, and also the second-order term in the case of a regularboundary. The asymptotic expansion is different for the cases offinite and infinite resistance of the boundary. The derived formulasrelate the heat content to the volume of…
In the first part, we derive a sharp gradient estimate for the log of Dirichlet heat kernel and Poisson heat kernel on domains, and a sharpened local Li-Yau gradient estimate that matches the global one. In the second part, without explicit curvature assumptions, we prove a global upper bound for the fundamental solution of an equation introduced by G. Perelman, i.e. the heat equation of the conformal Laplacian under backward Ricci flow. Further, under nonnegative Ricci curvature assumption, we prove a qualitatively sharp, global Gaussian upper bound.
We study the small-time asymptotics of the heat content of smooth non-characteristic domains of a general rank-varying sub-Riemannian structure, equipped with an arbitrary smooth measure. By adapting to the sub-Riemannian case a technique due to Savo, we establish the existence of the full asymptotic series: \begin{equation} Q_Ω(t) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} a_k t^{k/2}, \qquad \text{as } t\to 0. \end{equation} We compute explicitly the coefficients up to order $k=5$, in terms of sub-Riemannian invariants of the domain and its boundary. Furthermore, we prove that every coefficient can be obtained a…
Upper bounds are obtained for the heat content of an open set D in a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold M with Dirichlet boundary condition on bd(D), and non-negative initial condition. We show that these upper bounds are close to being sharp if (i) the Dirichlet-Laplace-Beltrami operator acting in $L^2(D)$ satisfies a strong Hardy inequality with weight $r^2$, (ii) the initial temperature distribution, and the specific heat of D are given by $r^{-a}$ and $r^{-b}$ respectively, where $r$ is the distance to the boundary, and 1<a<2, 1<b<2.
