This note extends the work of Foss and Tweedie (1997), who showed that availability of the classic Coupling from The Past algorithm of Propp and Wilson (1996) is essentially equivalent to uniform ergodicity for a Markov chain (see also HobertRobert, 2004). In this note we show that all geometrically ergodic chains possess dominated Coupling from The Past algorithms (not necessarily practical!) which are rather closely connected to Foster-Lyapunov criteria.
In this paper we find nonasymptotic exponential upper bounds for the deviation in the ergodic theorem for families of homogeneous Markov processes. We find some sufficient conditions for geometric ergodicity uniformly over a parametric family. We apply this property to the nonasymptotic nonparametric estimation problem for ergodic diffusion processes.
It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
In this article, we discuss ergodicity properties of a diffusion process given through an Itô stochastic differential equation. We identify conditions on the drift and diffusion coefficients which result in sub-geometric ergodicity of the corresponding semigroup with respect to the total variation distance. We also prove sub-geometric contractivity and ergodicity of the semigroup under a class of Wasserstein distances. Finally, we discuss sub-geometric ergodicity of two classes of Markov processes with jumps.
In this paper we consider multivariate time series obtained as solution to multidimensional nonlinear stochastic difference equations whose coefficients are allowed to be locally degenerate and to present discontinuities. We provide simple and easy to check sufficient conditions for the irreducibility, T-chain regularity and geometric ergodicity of these processes and apply the results to the BEKK-ARCH(1) models with a nonlinear autoregressive term.
A regime-switching geometric Brownian motion is used to model a geometric Brownian motion with its coefficients changing randomly according to a Markov chain. In this work, we give a complete characterization of the recurrent property of this process. The long time behavior of this process such as its $p$-th moment is also studied. Moreover, the quantitative properties of the regime-switching geometric Brownian motion with two-state switching are investigated to show the difference between geometric Brownian motion with switching and without switching. At last, some estimates of its first pass…
We analyze the large time behavior of a stochastic model for the lay-down of fibers on a conveyor belt in the production process of nonwovens. It is shown, that under weak conditions this degenerate diffusion process is strong mixing, confirming a conjecture of Grothaus and Klar. Moreover, under some additional assumptions even geometric ergodicity is established using probabilistic tools -- described in the book of Meyn and Tweedie -- in combination with methods from stochastic analysis.
We establish quantitative bounds for rates of convergence and asymptotic variances for iterated conditional sequential Monte Carlo (i-cSMC) Markov chains and associated particle Gibbs samplers. Our main findings are that the essential boundedness of potential functions associated with the i-cSMC algorithm provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniform ergodicity of the i-cSMC Markov chain, as well as quantitative bounds on its (uniformly geometric) rate of convergence. Furthermore, we show that the i-cSMC Markov chain cannot even be geometrically ergodic if this essential boundedn…
For the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) volatility process we show sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique stationary distribution, for the geometric ergodicity and for the finiteness of moments of the stationary distribution by a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition approach. The test functions used are naturally related to the geometry of the cone of positive semi-definite matrices and the drift condition is shown to be satisfied if the drift term of the defining stochastic differential equation is sufficiently `negative'. We show easily applicable sufficient conditions for the needed irred…
For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branchi…
Conditions for the existence of strictly stationary multivariate GARCH processes in the so-called BEKK parametrisation, which is the most general form of multivariate GARCH processes typically used in applications, and for their geometric ergodicity are obtained. The conditions are that the driving noise is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and zero is in the interior of its support and that a certain matrix built from the GARCH coefficients has spectral radius smaller than one. To establish the results semi-polynomial Markov chains are defined and analysed using algeb…
In this paper we prove a sharp quantitative version of the Kendall's Theorem. The Kendal Theorem states that under some mild conditions imposed on a probability distribution on positive integers (i.e. probabilistic sequence) one can prove convergence of its renewal sequence. Due to the well-known property - the first entrance last exit decomposition - such results are of interest in the stability theory of time homogeneous Markov chains. In particular the approach may be used to measure rates of convergence of geometrically ergodic Markov chains and consequently implies estimates on convergenc…
Max-stable processes are central models for spatial extremes. In this paper, we focus on some space-time max-stable models introduced in Embrechts et al. (2016). The processes considered induce discrete-time Markov chains taking values in the space of continuous functions from the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^3$ to $(0, \infty)$. We show that these Markov chains are geometrically ergodic. An interesting feature lies in the fact that the state space is not locally compact, making the classical methodology inapplicable. Instead, we use the fact that the state space is Polish and apply results pres…
The Bouncy Particle Sampler (BPS) is a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm to sample from a target density known up to a multiplicative constant. This method is based on a kinetic piecewise deterministic Markov process for which the target measure is invariant. This paper deals with theoretical properties of BPS. First, we establish geometric ergodicity of the associated semi-group under weaker conditions than in [10] both on the target distribution and the velocity probability distribution. This result is based on a new coupling of the process which gives a quantitative minorization condition …
In this paper we establish the ergodicity of Langevin dynamics for simple two-particle system involving a Lennard-Jones type potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such result for a system operating under this type of potential. Moreover we show that the dynamics are {\it geometrically} ergodic (have a spectral gap) and converge at a geometric rate. Methods from stochastic averaging are used to establish the existence of a Lyapunov function. The existence of a Lyapunov function in this setting seems resistant to more traditional approaches. This is a corrected version of th…
This paper is concerned with the long time behavior of Langevin dynamics of {\em Coulomb gases} in $\mathbf{R}^d$ with $d\geq 2$, that is a second order system of Brownian particles driven by an external force and a pairwise repulsive Coulomb force. We prove that the system converges exponentially to the unique Boltzmann-Gibbs invariant measure under a weighted total variation distance. The proof relies on a novel construction of Lyapunov function for the Coulomb system.
A probabilistic approach of computing geometric rate of convergence of stochastic processes is introduced in this paper. The goal is to quantitatively compute both upper and lower bounds of the exponential rate of convergence to the invariant probability measure of a stochastic process. By applying the coupling method, we derive an algorithm which does not need to discretize the state space. In this way, our approach works well for many high-dimensional examples. We apply this algorithm to both random perturbed iterative mappings and stochastic differential equations. We show that the rate of …
A probabilistic cellular automaton (PCA) can be viewed as a Markov chain. The cells are updated synchronously and independently, according to a distribution depending on a finite neighborhood. We investigate the ergodicity of this Markov chain. A classical cellular automaton is a particular case of PCA. For a 1-dimensional cellular automaton, we prove that ergodicity is equivalent to nilpotency, and is therefore undecidable. We then propose an efficient perfect sampling algorithm for the invariant measure of an ergodic PCA. Our algorithm does not assume any monotonicity property of the local r…
This paper describes sufficient conditions to ensure the correct ergodicity of the Adaptive Metropolis (AM) algorithm of Haario, Saksman and Tamminen [Bernoulli 7 (2001) 223--242] for target distributions with a noncompact support. The conditions ensuring a strong law of large numbers require that the tails of the target density decay super-exponentially and have regular contours. The result is based on the ergodicity of an auxiliary process that is sequentially constrained to feasible adaptation sets, independent estimates of the growth rate of the AM chain and the corresponding geometric dri…

A class of nonlinear ARCH processes is introduced and studied. The existence of a strictly stationary and $β$-mixing solution is established under a mild assumption on the density of the underlying independent process. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of moments. The analysis relies on Markov chain theory. The model generalizes some important features of standard ARCH models and is amenable to further analysis.
Let $P$ be a Markov kernel on a measurable space $\X$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. This paper provides explicit connections between the $V$-geometric ergodicity of $P$ and that of finite-rank nonnegative sub-Markov kernels $\Pc_k$ approximating $P$. A special attention is paid to obtain an efficient way to specify the convergence rate for $P$ from that of $\Pc_k$ and conversely. Furthermore, explicit bounds are obtained for the total variation distance between the $P$-invariant probability measure and the $\Pc_k$-invariant positive measure. The proofs are based on the Keller-Liverani perturbat…
In this paper we consider two-point unilateral Markov fields on a two-dimensional lattice as considered by Pickard, Galbraith and Walley. We show that, under various ergodicity conditions, they can be perfectly simulated in the stationary state on any finite window. The techniques which are used connect perfect simulation with oriented percolation through suitable coupling constructions.
We study perturbation theory and uniform ergodicity for discrete-time Markov chains on general state spaces in terms of the uniform moments of the first hitting times on some set. The methods we adopt are different from previous ones. For reversible and non-negative definite Markov chains, we first investigate the geometrically ergodic convergence rates. Based on the estimates, together with a first passage formula, we then get the convergence rates in uniform ergodicity. If the transition kernel $P$ is only reversible, we transfer to study the two-skeleton chain with the transition kernel $P^…
We consider a simple model for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of a flexible polymer in dilute solution, demonstrating geometric ergodicity for a pair of particles that interact with each other through a nonlinear spring potential while being advected by a stochastic Stokes fluid velocity field. This is a generalization of previous models which have used linear spring forces as well as white-in-time fluid velocity fields. We follow previous work combining control theoretic arguments, Lyapunov functions, and hypo-elliptic diffusion theory to prove exponential convergence via a Harris chain argume…

Ergodicity is a fundamental issue for a stochastic process. In this paper, we refine results on ergodicity for a general type of Markov chain to a specific type or the $GI/G/1$-type Markov chain, which has many interesting and important applications in various areas. It is of interest to obtain conditions in terms of system parameters or the given information about the process, under which the chain has various ergodic properties. Specifically, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for geometric, strong and polynomial ergodicity, respectively.
This paper introduces a geometric method for proving ergodicity of degenerate noise driven stochastic processes. The driving noise is assumed to be an arbitrary Levy process with non-degenerate diffusion component (but that may be applied to a single degree of freedom of the system). The geometric conditions are the approximate controllability of the process the fact that there exists a point in the phase space where the interior of the image of a point via a secondarily randomized version of the driving noise is non void. The paper applies the method to prove ergodicity of a sliding disk gove…
The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and ensemble square root filter (ESRF) are data assimilation methods used to combine high dimensional, nonlinear dynamical models with observed data. Despite their widespread usage in climate science and oil reservoir simulation, very little is known about the long-time behavior of these methods and why they are effective when applied with modest ensemble sizes in large dimensional turbulent dynamical systems. By following the basic principles of energy dissipation and controllability of filters, this paper establishes a simple, systematic and rigorous framewo…
We argue that the spectral theory of non-reversible Markov chains may often be more effectively cast within the framework of the naturally associated weighted-$L_\infty$ space $L_\infty^V$, instead of the usual Hilbert space $L_2=L_2(π)$, where $π$ is the invariant measure of the chain. This observation is, in part, based on the following results. A discrete-time Markov chain with values in a general state space is geometrically ergodic if and only if its transition kernel admits a spectral gap in $L_\infty^V$. If the chain is reversible, the same equivalence holds with $L_2$ in place of $L_\i…
For a discrete-time Markov chain $\{X(t)\}$ evolving on $\Re^\ell$ with transition kernel $P$, natural, general conditions are developed under which the following are established: 1. The transition kernel $P$ has a purely discrete spectrum, when viewed as a linear operator on a weighted Sobolev space $L_\infty^{v,1}$ of functions with norm, $$ \|f\|_{v,1} = \sup_{x \in \Re^\ell} \frac{1}{v(x)} \max \{|f(x)|, |\partial_1 f(x)|,\ldots,|\partial_\ell f(x)|\}, $$ where $v\colon \Re^\ell \to [1,\infty)$ is a Lyapunov function and $\partial_i:=\partial/\partial x_i$. 2. The Markov chain is geometric…
We study ergodic properties of stochastic geometric wave equations on a particular model with the target being the 2D sphere while considering the space variable-independent solutions only. This simplification leads to a degenerate stochastic equation in the tangent bundle of the 2D sphere. Studying this equation, we prove existence and non-uniqueness of invariant probability measures for the original problem and we obtain also results on attractivity towards an invariant measure. We also present a suitable numerical scheme for approximating the solutions subject to a sphere constraint.
We introduce a new property of Markov chains, called variance bounding. We prove that, for reversible chains at least, variance bounding is weaker than, but closely related to, geometric ergodicity. Furthermore, variance bounding is equivalent to the existence of usual central limit theorems for all $L^2$ functionals. Also, variance bounding (unlike geometric ergodicity) is preserved under the Peskun order. We close with some applications to Metropolis--Hastings algorithms.
We study the ergodic behaviour of a discrete-time process $X$ which is a Markov chain in a stationary random environment. The laws of $X_t$ are shown to converge to a limiting law in (weighted) total variation distance as $t\to\infty$. Convergence speed is estimated and an ergodic theorem is established for functionals of $X$. Our hypotheses on $X$ combine the standard "small set" and "drift" conditions for geometrically ergodic Markov chains with conditions on the growth rate of a certain "maximal process" of the random environment. We are able to cover a wide range of models that have hereto…
We provide explicit expressions for the constants involved in the characterisation of ergodicity of sub-geometric Markov chains. The constants are determined in terms of those appearing in the assumed drift and one-step minorisation conditions. The result is fundamental for the study of some algorithms where uniform bounds for these constants are needed for a family of Markov kernels. Our result accommodates also some classes of inhomogeneous chains.
Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) lies at the core of modern Bayesian methodology, much of which would be impossible without it. Thus, the convergence properties of MCMCs have received significant attention, and in particular, proving (geometric) ergodicity is of critical interest. Trust in the ability of MCMCs to sample from modern-day high-dimensional posteriors, however, has been limited by a widespread perception that these chains typically experience serious convergence problems. In this paper, we first demonstrate that contemporary methods for obtaining convergence rates have serious limit…

The stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus driven by degenerate noise are studied. We characterize the smallest closed invariant subspace for this model and show that the dynamics restricted to that subspace is ergodic. In particular, our results yield a purely geometric characterization of a class of noises for which the equation is ergodic in $Ł^2_0(\TT^2)$. Unlike previous works, this class is independent of the viscosity and the strength of the noise. The two main tools of our analysis are the \textit{asymptotic strong Feller} property, introduced in this work, and an approxima…
First, under a geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide some limit theorems and some probability inequalities for the bifurcating Markov chains (BMC). The BMC model was introduced by Guyon to detect cellular aging from cell lineage, and our aim is thus to complete his asymptotic results. The deviation inequalities are then applied to derive first result on the moderate deviation principle (MDP) for a functional of the BMC with a restricted range of speed, but with a function which can be unbounded. Next, under a uniform geometric ergodicity assumption, we provide deviation inequalities for …
When sampling a multi-modal distribution $π(x)$, $x\in \rr^d$, a Markov chain with local proposals is often slowly mixing; while a Small-World sampler \citep{guankrone} -- a Markov chain that uses a mixture of local and long-range proposals -- is fast mixing. However, a Small-World sampler suffers from the curse of dimensionality because its spectral gap depends on the volume of each mode. We present a new sampler that combines tempering, Small-World sampling, and producing long-range proposals from samples in companion chains (e.g. Equi-Energy sampler). In its simplest form the sampler employ…
