The stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations on the torus driven by degenerate noise are studied. We characterize the smallest closed invariant subspace for this model and show that the dynamics restricted to that subspace is ergodic. In particular, our results yield a purely geometric characterization of a class of noises for which the equation is ergodic in $Ł^2_0(\TT^2)$. Unlike previous works, this class is independent of the viscosity and the strength of the noise. The two main tools of our analysis are the \textit{asymptotic strong Feller} property, introduced in this work, and an approximate integration by parts formula. The first, when combined with a weak type of irreducibility, is shown to ensure that the dynamics is ergodic. The second is used to show that the first holds under a H{ö}rmander-type condition. This requires some interesting nonadapted stochastic analysis.
We prove ergodicity of the finite dimensional approximations of the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, driven by a random force. The forcing noise acts only on a few modes and some algebraic conditions on the forced modes are found that imply the ergodicity. The convergence rate to the unique invariant measure is shown to be exponential.
We prove that the any Markov solution to the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations driven by a mildly degenerate noise (i.e.all but finitely many Fourier modes are forced) is uniquely ergodic. This follows by proving strong Feller regularity and irreducibility.
Consider the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the torus We prove that the semigroup P_t generated by the solutions to stochastic Navier-stokes equations is asymptotically strong Feller. Moreover, we also prove that semigroup P_t is exponentially ergodic in some sense
We prove that the small scale structures of the stochastically forced Navier-Stokes equations approach those of the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as the scales get smaller. Precisely, we prove that the rescaled k-th spatial Fourier mode converges weakly on path space to an associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as |k| --> infty . In addition, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equations and the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process induce equivalent transition densities if the viscosity is replaced with sufficient hyperviscosity. This gives a simple proof of unique ergo…
We investigate the ergodicity of 2D large scale quasigeostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We show that the quasigeostrophic flows are ergodic under suitable conditions on the random forcing and on the fluid domain, and under no restrictions on viscosity, Ekman constant or Coriolis parameter. When these conditions are satisfied, then for any observable of the quasigeostrophic flows, its time average approximates the statistical ensemble average, as long as the time interval is sufficiently long.
In this paper, we prove the existence of a unique strong solution to a stochastic tamed 3D Navier-Stokes equation in the whole space as well as in the periodic boundary case. Then, we also study the Feller property of solutions, and prove the existence of invariant measures for the corresponding Feller semigroup in the case of periodic conditions. Moreover, in the case of periodic boundary and degenerated additive noise, using the notion of asymptotic strong Feller property proposed by Hairer and Mattingly \cite{Ha-Ma}, we prove the uniqueness of invariant measures for the corresponding transi…
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
We consider a simple model for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of a flexible polymer in dilute solution, demonstrating geometric ergodicity for a pair of particles that interact with each other through a nonlinear spring potential while being advected by a stochastic Stokes fluid velocity field. This is a generalization of previous models which have used linear spring forces as well as white-in-time fluid velocity fields. We follow previous work combining control theoretic arguments, Lyapunov functions, and hypo-elliptic diffusion theory to prove exponential convergence via a Harris chain argume…
Asymptotic behavior of the three-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with Markov switching in additive noises is studied for incompressible fluid flow in a bounded domain in the three-dimensional space. To study such a system, we introduce a family of regularized equations and investigate the asymptotic behavior of the regularized equations first. The existence an ergodic measure for the regularized system is established via the Krylov-Bogolyubov method. Then the existence of an stationary measure to the original system is obtained by extracting a limit from the ergodic measures of …
In the first part of the note we analyze the long time behaviour of a two dimensional stochastic Navier--Stokes equations system on a torus with a degenerate, one dimensional noise. In particular, for some initial data and noises we identify the invariant probability measure for the system and give a sufficient condition under which it is unique and stochastically stable. In the second part of the note, we consider a simple example of a finite-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations driven by a one dimensional Wiener process with a drift, that displays some similarity with the …
The paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to a two-dimensional backward stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with nonlinear forcing, driven by a Brownian motion. We use the spectral approximation and the truncation and variational techniques. The methodology features an interactive analysis on basis of the regularity of the deterministic Navier-Stokes dynamics and the stochastic properties of the Itô-type diffusion processes.
We consider the incompressible 2D Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions driven by a deterministic time periodic forcing and a degenerate stochastic forcing. We show that the system possesses a unique ergodic periodic invariant measure which is exponentially mixing under a Wasserstein metric. We also prove the weak law of large numbers for the continuous time inhomogeneous solution process. In addition, we obtain the weak law of large numbers and central limit theorem by restricting the inhomogeneous solution process to periodic times. The results are independent of the stre…
We propose and study a temporal, and spatio-temporal discretisation of the 2D stochastic Navier--Stokes equations in bounded domains supplemented with no-slip boundary conditions. Considering additive noise, we base its construction on the related nonlinear random PDE, which is solved by a transform of the solution of the stochastic Navier--Stokes equations. We show strong rate (up to) $1$ in probability for a corresponding discretisation in space and time (and space-time). Convergence of order (up to) 1 in time was previously only known for linear SPDEs.
A new probabilistic representation is presented for solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in 3 dimensions with given forcing and initial velocity. This representation expresses solutions as scaled conditional expectations of functionals of a Markov process indexed by the nodes of a binary tree. It gives existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for all time under relatively simple conditions on the forcing and initial data. These conditions involve comparison of the forcing and initial data with majorizing kernels.
In this paper, we consider a certain class of second order nonlinear PDEs with damping and space-time white noise forcing, posed on the $d$-dimensional torus. This class includes the wave equation for $d=1$ and the beam equation for $d\le 3$. We show that the Gibbs measure of the equation without forcing and damping is the unique invariant measure for the flow of this system. Since the flow does not satisfy the Strong Feller property, we introduce a new technique for showing unique ergodicity. This approach may be also useful in situations in which finite-time blowup is possible.
The Bayesian approach to inverse problems is of paramount importance in quantifying uncertainty about the input to and the state of a system of interest given noisy observations. Herein we consider the forward problem of the forced 2D Navier Stokes equation. The inverse problem is inference of the forcing, and possibly the initial condition, given noisy observations of the velocity field. We place a prior on the forcing which is in the form of a spatially correlated temporally white Gaussian process, and formulate the inverse problem for the posterior distribution. Given appropriate spatial re…
We consider the incompressible, two dimensional Navier Stokes equation with periodic boundary conditions under the effect of an additive, white in time, stochastic forcing. Under mild restrictions on the geometry of the scales forced, we show that any finite dimensional projection of the solution possesses a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure. We also show that under natural assumptions the density of such a projection is everywhere strictly positive. In particular, our conditions are viscosity independent. We are mainly interested in forcing which excites a very small number of m…
We give an overview of the ideas central to some recent developments in the ergodic theory of the stochastically forced Navier Stokes equations and other dissipative stochastic partial differential equations. Since our desire is to make the core ideas clear, we will mostly work with a specific example: the stochastically forced Navier Stokes equations. To further clarify ideas, we will also examine in detail a toy problem. A few general theorems are given. Spatial regularity, ergodicity, exponential mixing, coupling for a SPDE, and hypoellipticity are all discussed.
Regularization by noise for certain classes of fluid dynamic equations, a theme dear to Giuseppe Da Prato (see G. Da Prato and A. Debussche, Ergodicity for the 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations, J. Math. Pures Appl., 2003), is reviewed focusing on 3D Navier-Stokes equations and dyadic models of turbulence.
We consider a stochastic electroconvection model describing the nonlinear evolution of a surface charge density in a two-dimensional fluid with additive stochastic forcing. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions, we define the corresponding Markov semigroup, and we study its Feller properties. When the noise forces enough modes in phase space, we obtain the uniqueness of the smooth invariant measure for the Markov transition kernels associated with the model.
In this paper, we establish the existence, uniqueness and attraction properties of an invariant measure for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation in the presence of a degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in four directions. The main challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the Markovian dynamics corresponding to this system. To achieve this, we propose a condition which only requires four noises
This article concerns the random dynamics and asymptotic analysis of the well known mathematical model, the Navier-Stokes equations. We consider the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations (SNSE) driven by a \textsl{linear multiplicative white noise of Itô type} on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$. Firstly, we prove that the non-autonomous 2D SNSE generates a bi-spatial $(\mathbb{L}^2(\mathbb{R}^2),\mathbb{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^2))$-continuous random cocycle. Due to the bi-spatial continuity property of the random cocycle associated with SNSE, we show that if the initial data is in $\mathbb…
We study a damped stochastic non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) equation driven by an additive noise. It is white in time and smooth in space. Using a coupling method, we establish convergence of the Markovian transition semi-group toward a unique invariant probability measure. This kind of method was originally developped to prove exponential mixing for strongly dissipative equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations. We consider here a weakly dissipative equation, the damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the one dimensional cubic case. We prove that the mixing property holds and that the rat…
We develop a general method to prove the existence of spectral gaps for Markov semigroups on Banach spaces. Unlike most previous work, the type of norm we consider for this analysis is neither a weighted supremum norm nor an $Ł^p$-type norm, but involves the derivative of the observable as well and hence can be seen as a type of 1-Wasserstein distance. This turns out to be a suitable approach for infinite-dimensional spaces where the usual Harris or Doeblin conditions, which are geared toward total variation convergence, often fail to hold. In the first part of this paper, we consider semigrou…
We consider a stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation in a bounded domain. The random force is assumed to be non-degenerate and periodic in time, its law has a support localised with respect to both time and space. Slightly strengthening the conditions in the pioneering work about exponential ergodicity by Shirikyan [Shi15], we prove that the stochastic system satisfies Donsker-Varadhan typle large deviations principle. Our proof is based on a criterion of [JNPS15] in which we need to verify uniform irreducibility and uniform Feller property for the related Feynman-Kac semigroup.
We present a theory of hypoellipticity and unique ergodicity for semilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs with "polynomial" nonlinearities and additive noise, considered as abstract evolution equations in some Hilbert space. It is shown that if Hormander's bracket condition holds at every point of this Hilbert space, then a lower bound on the Malliavin covariance operator $M_t$ can be obtained. Informally, this bound can be read as "Fix any finite-dimensional projection $Π$ on a subspace of sufficiently regular functions. Then the eigenfunctions of $M_t$ with small eigenvalues have only a very sma…
We consider the Navier-Stokes equation on the 2D torus, with a stochastic forcing term which is a cylindrical fractional Wiener noise of Hurst parameter $H$. Following [3,8] which dealt with the case $1/2$, we prove a local existence and uniqueness result when $7/16< H< 1/ 2$ and a global existence and uniqueness result when $ 1/2<H<1$.
Stochastic Navier--Stokes equations in a thin three-dimensional domain are considered, driven by additive noise. The convergence of martingale solution of the stochastic Navier--Stokes equations in a thin three-dimensional domain to the unique martingale solution of the 2D stochastic Navier--Stokes equations, as the thickness of the film vanishes, is established. Hence, we justify the approximation of 3D Navier--Stokes equations driven by random forcing by its corresponding two-dimensional setting in applications.
Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a thin spherical domain $Q_\varepsilon$ along with free boundary conditions under a random forcing are considered. The convergence of the martingale solution of these equations to the martingale solution of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on a sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ as the thickness converges to zero is established.
In this article, we consider the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equation (SNSE) on a smooth bounded domain, driven by affine-linear multiplicative white noise and with random initial conditions and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The random initial condition is allowed to anticipate the forcing noise. Our main objective is to prove the existence of a solution to the SNSE under sufficient Malliavin regularity of the initial condition. To this end we employ anticipating calculus techniques.
We propose in this work a fractional stochastic differential equation (FSDE) model consistent with the over-damped limit of the generalized Langevin equation model. As a result of the `fluctuation-dissipation theorem', the differential equations driven by fractional Brownian noise to model memory effects should be paired with Caputo derivatives, and this FSDE model should be understood in an integral form. We establish the existence of strong solutions for such equations and discuss the ergodicity and convergence to Gibbs measure. In the linear forcing regime, we show rigorously the algebraic …
We establish verifiable general sufficient conditions for exponential or subexponential ergodicity of Markov processes that may lack the strong Feller property. We apply the obtained results to show exponential ergodicity of a variety of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with additive forcing, including 2D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Our main tool is a new version of the generalized coupling method.
For a prescribed deterministic kinetic energy we use convex integration to construct analytically weak and probabilistically strong solutions to the 3D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations driven by a linear multiplicative stochastic forcing. These solutions are defined up to an arbitrarily large stopping time and have deterministic initial values, which are part of the construction. Moreover, by a suitable choice of different kinetic energies which coincide on an interval close to time 0, we obtain non-uniqueness.
We study a singular limit of a scaled compressible Navier--Stokes--Coriolis system driven by both a deterministic and stochastic forcing terms in three dimensions. If the Mach number is comparable to the Froude number with both proportional to say $\varepsilon\ll 1$, whereas the Rossby number scales like $\varepsilon^m$ for $m>1$ large, then we show that any family of weak martingale solution to the $3$-D randomly forced rotating compressible equation (under the influence of a deterministic centrifugal force) converges in probability, as $\varepsilon\rightarrow0$, to the $2$-D incompressible N…
We study the problems of controllability and ergodicity of the system of 3D primitive equations modeling large-scale oceanic and atmospheric motions. The system is driven by an additive force acting only on a finite number of Fourier modes in the temperature equation. We first show that the velocity and temperature components of the equations can be simultaneously approximately controlled to arbitrary position in the phase space. The proof is based on Agrachev-Sarychev type geometric control approach. Next, we study the controllability of the linearisation of primitive equations around a non-s…
Recently, a number of authors have investigated the conditions under which a stochastic perturbation acting on an infinite dimensional dynamical system, e.g. a partial differential equation, makes the system ergodic and mixing. In particular, one is interested in finding minimal and physically natural conditions on the nature of the stochastic perturbation. I shall review recent results on this question; in particular, I shall discuss the Navier-Stokes equation on a two dimensional torus with a random force which is white noise in time, and excites only a finite number of modes. The number of …
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb R^d$ ($d=2,3$) with a stochastic forcing term which is white noise in time and coloured in space; the spatial covariance of the noise is not too regular, so Itô calculus cannot be applied in the space of finite energy vector fields. We prove existence of weak solutions for $d=2,3$ and pathwise uniqueness for $d=2$.
We deduce almost-sure exponentially fast mixing of passive scalars advected by solutions of the stochastically-forced 2D Navier-Stokes equations and 3D hyper-viscous Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb T^d$ subjected to non-denegenerate $H^σ$-regular noise for any $σ$ sufficiently large. That is, for all $s > 0$ there is a deterministic exponential decay rate such that all mean-zero $H^s$ passive scalars decay in $H^{-s}$ at this same rate with probability one. This is equivalent to what is known as \emph{quenched correlation decay} for the Lagrangian flow in the dynamical systems literature. …
We study the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation on the torus, driven by Gaussian noise that is white in time and colored in space. We consider the case where the magnitude of the random forcing $\sqrt{\e}$ and its correlation scale $δ(\e)$ are both small. We prove a large deviations principle for the solutions, as well as for the family of invariant measures, as $\e$ and $δ(\e)$ are simultaneously sent to $0$, under a suitable scaling.
We are dealing with the validity of a large deviation principle for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation, with periodic boundary conditions, perturbed by a Gaussian random forcing. We are here interested in the regime where both the strength of the noise and its correlation are vanishing, on a length scale $\e$ and $\d(\e)$, respectively, with $0<\e,\ \d(\e)<<1$. Depending on the relationship between $\e$ and $\d(\e)$ we will prove the validity of the large deviation principle in different functional spaces.
