Recently, a number of authors have investigated the conditions under which a stochastic perturbation acting on an infinite dimensional dynamical system, e.g. a partial differential equation, makes the system ergodic and mixing. In particular, one is interested in finding minimal and physically natural conditions on the nature of the stochastic perturbation. I shall review recent results on this question; in particular, I shall discuss the Navier-Stokes equation on a two dimensional torus with a random force which is white noise in time, and excites only a finite number of modes. The number of excited modes depends on the viscosity $ν$, and grows like $ν^{-3}$ when $ν$ goes to zero. This Markov process has a unique invariant measure and is exponentially mixing in time.
In this paper, we establish the existence, uniqueness and attraction properties of an invariant measure for the real Ginzburg-Landau equation in the presence of a degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in four directions. The main challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the Markovian dynamics corresponding to this system. To achieve this, we propose a condition which only requires four noises
In this paper, conditions for transience, recurrence, ergodicity and strong, subexponential (polynomial) and exponential ergodicity of a class of Feller processes are derived. The conditions are given in terms of the coefficients of the corresponding infinitesimal generator. As a consequence, mixing properties of these processes are also discussed.
It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
The Northeast Model is a spin system on the two-dimensional integer lattice that evolves according to the following rule: Whenever a site's southerly and westerly nearest neighbors have spin $1$, it may reset its own spin by tossing a $p$-coin; at all other times, its spin remains frozen. It is proved that the northeast model has a phase transition at $p_{c}=1-β_{c}$, where $β_{c}$ is the critical parameter for oriented percolation. For $p<p_{c}$, the trivial measure $δ_{0}$ that puts mass one on the configuration with all spins set at $0$ is the unique ergodic, translation invariant, stationa…
We link conditional weak mixing and ergodicity of the tensor product in Riesz spaces. In particular, we characterise conditional weak mixing of a conditional expectation preserving system by the ergodicity of its tensor product with itself or other ergodic systems. In order to achieve this we characterise the components of the weak order units in the tensor product of two Dedekind complete Riesz spaces with weak order units.
In this paper, we establish the existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for a class of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations driven by multiplicative noise on a bounded domain. The main results can be applied to SPDEs of various types such as the stochastic Burgers equation and the reaction-diffusion equations perturbed by space-time white noise.
Let $G$ be a semi-direct product $G=A\times_ϕK$ with $A$ Abelian and $K$ compact. We characterize spread-out probability measures on $G$ that are mixing by convolutions by means of their Fourier transforms. A key tool is a spectral radius formula for the Fourier transform of a regular Borel measure on $G$ that we develop, and which is analogous to the well-known Beurling--Gelfand spectral radius formula. For spread-out probability measures on $G$, we also characterize ergodicity by means of the Fourier transform of the measure. Finally, we show that spread-out probability measures on such grou…
We proved the existence of an infinite dimensional stochastic system driven by white $α$-stable noises ($1<α\leq 2$), and prove this system is strongly mixing. Our method is by perturbing Ornstein-Uhlenbeck $α$-stable processes.
For a general attractive Probabilistic Cellular Automata on S Z d , we prove that the (time-) convergence towards equilibrium of this Markovian parallel dynamics, exponentially fast in the uniform norm, is equivalent to a condition (A). This condition means the exponential decay of the inuence from the boundary for the invariant measures of the system restricted to nite boxes. For a class of reversible PCA dynamics on {--1, +1} Z d , with a naturally associated Gibbsian potential $φ$, we prove that a (spatial-) weak mixing condition (WM) for $φ$ implies the validity of the assumption (A); thus…
We proved that there exists a unique invariant measure for solutions of stochastic conservation laws with Dirichlet boundary condition driven by multiplicative noise. Moreover, a polynomial mixing property is established. This is done in the setting of kinetic solutions taking values in an L^1-weighted space.
The long time behaviour of solutions to stochastic porous media equations on smooth bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary data is studied. Based on weighted $L^{1}$-estimates the existence and uniqueness of invariant measures with optimal bounds on the rate of mixing are proved. Along the way the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions is shown.
The East process, a well known reversible linear chain of spins, represents the prototype of a general class of interacting particle systems with constraints modeling the dynamics of real glasses. In this paper we consider a generalization of the East process living in the d-dimensional lattice and we establish new progresses on the out- of-equilibrium behavior. In particular we prove a form of (local) exponential ergodicity when the initial distribution is far from the stationary one and we prove that the mixing time in a finite box grows linearly in the side of the box.
In this article, we study the ergodicity of neutral retarded stochastic functional differential equations driven by $α$-regular Volterra process. Based on the equivalence between neutral retarded stochastic functional differential equations and the stochastic evolution equation, we get the ergodicity of neutral retarded stochastic functional differential equations.
The Laplace transform of partial sums of the square of a non-centered Gauss-Markov process, conditioning on its starting point, is explicitly computed. The parameters of multiplicative ergodicity are deduced.
It is well known that for a strictly stationary, reversible, Harris recurrent Markov chain, the $ρ$-mixing condition is equivalent to geometric ergodicity and to a "spectral gap" condition. In this note, it will be shown with an example that for that class of Markov chains, the "interlaced" variant of the $ρ$-mixing condition fails to be equivalent to those conditions.
We illustrate how the notion of asymptotic coupling provides a flexible and intuitive framework for proving the uniqueness of invariant measures for a variety of stochastic partial differential equations whose deterministic counterpart possesses a finite number of determining modes. Examples exhibiting parabolic and hyperbolic structure are studied in detail. In the later situation we also present a simple framework for establishing the existence of invariant measures when the usual approach relying on the Krylov-Bogolyubov procedure and compactness fails.
In this paper, we introduce a new class of processes which are diffusions with jumps driven by a multivariate nonlinear Hawkes process. Our goal is to study their long-time behavior. In the case of exponential memory kernels for the underlying Hawkes process we establish conditions for the positive Harris recurrence of the couple (X, Y), where X denotes the diffusion process and Y the piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP) defining the stochastic intensity of the driving Hawkes. As a direct consequence of the Harris recurrence, we obtain the ergodic theorem for X. Furthermore, we provid…
We propose a possible way of attacking the question posed originally by Daniel Revuz and Marc Yor in their book published in 1991. They were asking whether the Lévy transformation of the Wiener--space is ergodic. Our main results are formulated in terms of a strongly stationary sequence of random variables obtained by evaluating the iterated paths at time one. Roughly speaking, this sequence has to approach zero "sufficiently fast". For example, one of our results states that if the expected hitting time of small neighbourhoods of the origin do not growth faster then the inverse of the size of…
We study a damped stochastic non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) equation driven by an additive noise. It is white in time and smooth in space. Using a coupling method, we establish convergence of the Markovian transition semi-group toward a unique invariant probability measure. This kind of method was originally developped to prove exponential mixing for strongly dissipative equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations. We consider here a weakly dissipative equation, the damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the one dimensional cubic case. We prove that the mixing property holds and that the rat…
Consider a parabolic stochastic PDE of the form $\partial_t u=\frac{1}{2}Δu + σ(u)η$, where $u=u(t\,,x)$ for $t\ge0$ and $x\in\mathbb{R}^d$, $σ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is Lipschitz continuous and non random, and $η$ is a centered Gaussian noise that is white in time and colored in space, with a possibly-signed homogeneous spatial correlation $f$. If, in addition, $u(0)\equiv1$, then we prove that, under a mild decay condition on $f$, the process $x\mapsto u(t\,,x)$ is stationary and ergodic at all times $t>0$. It has been argued that, when coupled with moment estimates, spatial ergodi…
For a discrete-time Markov chain $\{X(t)\}$ evolving on $\Re^\ell$ with transition kernel $P$, natural, general conditions are developed under which the following are established: 1. The transition kernel $P$ has a purely discrete spectrum, when viewed as a linear operator on a weighted Sobolev space $L_\infty^{v,1}$ of functions with norm, $$ \|f\|_{v,1} = \sup_{x \in \Re^\ell} \frac{1}{v(x)} \max \{|f(x)|, |\partial_1 f(x)|,\ldots,|\partial_\ell f(x)|\}, $$ where $v\colon \Re^\ell \to [1,\infty)$ is a Lyapunov function and $\partial_i:=\partial/\partial x_i$. 2. The Markov chain is geometric…
We analyze the large time behavior of a stochastic model for the lay-down of fibers on a conveyor belt in the production process of nonwovens. It is shown, that under weak conditions this degenerate diffusion process is strong mixing, confirming a conjecture of Grothaus and Klar. Moreover, under some additional assumptions even geometric ergodicity is established using probabilistic tools -- described in the book of Meyn and Tweedie -- in combination with methods from stochastic analysis.
In this work, we consider the stochastic Burgers-Huxley equation perturbed by multiplicative Gaussian noise, and discuss about the global solvability results and asymptotic behavior of solutions. We show the existence of a global strong solution of the stochastic Burgers-Huxley equation, by making use of a local monotonicity property of the linear and nonlinear operators and a stochastic generalization of localized version of the Minty-Browder technique. We then discuss about the inviscid limit of the stochastic Burgers-Huxley equation to Burgers as well as Huxley equations. By considering the…
We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, that is, the environment process. We can transfer the rate of mixing in time of the environment to the rate of mixing of the environment process with a loss of at most polynomial order. Therefore the method is applicable to environments with sufficiently fast polynomial mixing. We obtain unique ergodicity of the environment process. Moreover, the unique invar…

Stochastic partial differential equations of second order with two unknown parameters are studied. Based on ergodicity, two suitable families of minimum constrast estimators are introduced. Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of estimators are proved. The results are applied to hyperbolic equations perturbed by Brownian noise.
The goal of this paper is to develop a general method to establish conditional ergodicity of infinite-dimensional Markov chains. Given a Markov chain in a product space, we aim to understand the ergodic properties of its conditional distributions given one of the components. Such questions play a fundamental role in the ergodic theory of nonlinear filters. In the setting of Harris chains, conditional ergodicity has been established under general nondegeneracy assumptions. Unfortunately, Markov chains in infinite-dimensional state spaces are rarely amenable to the classical theory of Harris cha…
In this paper we study ergodicity and mixing property of some measure preserving transformations on the Wiener space (W,H,μ) which are generated by some random unitary operators defined on the Cameron-Martin space H.
We establish verifiable general sufficient conditions for exponential or subexponential ergodicity of Markov processes that may lack the strong Feller property. We apply the obtained results to show exponential ergodicity of a variety of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with additive forcing, including 2D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Our main tool is a new version of the generalized coupling method.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to stochastic evolution equations with monotone drift and multiplicative Poisson noise in the variational setting, thus covering a large class of (fully) nonlinear partial differential equations perturbed by jump noise. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence, ergodicity, and uniqueness of invariant measures. Furthermore, under mild additional assumptions, we prove that the Kolmogorov equation associated to the stochastic equation with additive noise is solvable in $L_1$ spaces with respect to an invariant measure.
In the simplest sequential decision problem for an ergodic stochastic process X, at each time n a decision u_n is made as a function of past observations X_0,...,X_{n-1}, and a loss l(u_n,X_n) is incurred. In this setting, it is known that one may choose (under a mild integrability assumption) a decision strategy whose pathwise time-average loss is asymptotically smaller than that of any other strategy. The corresponding problem in the case of partial information proves to be much more delicate, however: if the process X is not observable, but decisions must be based on the observation of a di…
We prove exponential convergence to the invariant measure, in the total variation norm, for solutions of SDEs driven by $α$-stable noises in finite and in infinite dimensions. Two approaches are used. The first one is based on Harris theorem, and the second on Doeblin's coupling argument. Irreducibility, Lyapunov function techniques, and uniform strong Feller property play an essential role in both approaches. We concentrate on two classes of Markov processes: solutions of finite-dimensional equations, introduced in [Priola 2010], with Hölder continuous drift and a general, non-degenerate, sym…
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
We study the problems of controllability and ergodicity of the system of 3D primitive equations modeling large-scale oceanic and atmospheric motions. The system is driven by an additive force acting only on a finite number of Fourier modes in the temperature equation. We first show that the velocity and temperature components of the equations can be simultaneously approximately controlled to arbitrary position in the phase space. The proof is based on Agrachev-Sarychev type geometric control approach. Next, we study the controllability of the linearisation of primitive equations around a non-s…
We consider an infinite dimensional diffusion on $T^{\mathbb Z^d}$, where $T$ is the circle, defined by an infinitesimal generator of the form $L=\sum_{i\in\mathbb Z^d}\left(\frac{a_i(η)}{2}\partial^2_i +b_i(η)\partial_i\right)$, with $η\in T^{\mathbb Z^d}$, where the coefficients $a_i,b_i$ are of finite range, bounded with uniformly bounded second order partial derivatives and the ellipticity assumption $\inf_{i,η}a_i(η)>0$ is satisfied. We prove that whenever $ν$ is an invariant Gibbs measure for this diffusion satisfying the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, then the dynamics is exponentially…
The particle Gibbs (PG) sampler is a systematic way of using a particle filter within Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). This results in an off-the-shelf Markov kernel on the space of state trajectories, which can be used to simulate from the full joint smoothing distribution for a state space model in an MCMC scheme. We show that the PG Markov kernel is uniformly ergodic under rather general assumptions, that we will carefully review and discuss. In particular, we provide an explicit rate of convergence which reveals that: (i) for fixed number of data points, the convergence rate can be made ar…
We develop necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness of the invariant measure of the filtering process associated to an ergodic hidden Markov model in a finite or countable state space. These results provide a complete solution to a problem posed by Blackwell (1957), and subsume earlier partial results due to Kaijser, Kochman and Reeds. The proofs of our main results are based on the stability theory of nonlinear filters.
