We construct new families of (q-) difference and (contour) integral operators having nice actions on Koornwinder's multivariate orthogonal polynomials. We further show that the Koornwinder polynomials can be constructed by suitable sequences of these operators applied to the constant polynomial 1, giving the difference-integral representation of the title. Macdonald's conjectures (as proved by van Diejen and Sahi) for the principal specialization and norm follow immediately, as does a Cauchy-type identity of Mimachi.
We prove a generalization of the $q$-Selberg integral evaluation formula. The integrand is that of $q$-Selberg integral multiplied by a factor of the same form with respect to part of the variables. The proof relies on the quadratic norm formula of Koornwinder polynomials. We also derive generalizations of Mehta's integral formula as limit cases of our integral.
We prove certain duality properties and present recurrence relations for a four-parameter family of self-dual Koornwinder-Macdonald polynomials. The recurrence relations are used to verify Macdonald's normalization conjectures for these polynomials.
We consider Koornwinder's method for constructing orthogonal polynomials in two variables from orthogonal polynomials in one variable. If semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in one variable are used, then Koornwinder's construction generates semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in two variables. We consider two methods for deducing matrix Pearson equations for weight functions associated with these polynomials, and consequently, we deduce the second order linear partial differential operators for classical Koornwinder polynomials.
In 1975, Koornwinder gave a method to construct orthogonal polynomials in two variables using the classical Jacobi polynomials. In [5], the authors introduced some new examples of Koornwinder polynomials obtained from the Koornwinder construction (see also [10]). The aim of this paper is to give the parameter derivative representations in the form of \begin{equation*} \frac{\partial P_{n,k}(λ;x,y)}{\partialλ} = \sum_{m=0}^{n-1} \sum_{j=0}^{m}d_{n,j,m}P_{m,j}(λ;x,y) + \sum_{j=0}^{k}e_{n,j,k}P_{n,j}(λ;x,y) \end{equation*} for some Koornwinder polynomials where $λ$ is a parameter and $0\leq k\leq…
This paper surveys eight classes of polynomials associated with $A$-type and $BC$-type root systems: Jack, Jacobi, Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials and interpolation (or shifted) Jack and Macdonald polynomials and their $BC$-type extensions. Among these the $BC$-type interpolation Jack polynomials were probably unobserved until now. Much emphasis is put on combinatorial formulas and binomial formulas for (most of) these polynomials. Possibly new results derived from these formulas are a limit from Koornwinder to Macdonald polynomials, an explicit formula for Koornwinder polynomials in two…
We study a family of quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes associated with the so-called first family of Jacobi-Koornwinder bivariate polynomials. These polynomials are orthogonal on a bounded region typically known as the swallow tail. We will explicitly compute the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relations generated by these QBD polynomials and study the conditions under we can produce families of discrete-time QBD processes. Finally, we show an urn model associated with one special case of these QBD processes.
In the previous works \cite{N46,N47} authors have defined the oscillator-like system that associated with the two variable Chebyshev-Koornwinder polynomials. We call this system the generalized Chebyshev - Koornwinder oscillator. In this paper we study the properties of infinite-dimensional Lie algebra that is analogous to the Heisenberg algebra for the Chebyshev - Koornwinder oscillator. We construct the exact irreducible representation of this algebra in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of functions that are defined on a region which bounded by the Steiner hypocycloid. The functions are square-…
From Koornwinder's interpretation of big $q$-Legendre polynomials as spherical elements on the quantum $SU(2)$ group an addition formula is derived for the big $q$-Legendre polynomial. The formula involves Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials, little $q$-Jacobi polynomials and dual $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials. For the little $q$-ultraspherical polynomials a product formula in terms of a big $q$-Legendre polynomial follows by $q$-integration. The addition and product formula for the Legendre polynomials are obtained when $q$ tends to 1.
The aim of this paper is to give identities which are generalizations of the formulas given by Koornwinder [J. Math. Phys. 30, (1989)] and Hamdi-Zeng [J. Math. Phys. 51, (2010)]. Our proofs are much simpler than and different from the previous investigations.
An alternative and combinatorial proof is given for a connection between a system of Hahn polynomials and identities for symmetric elements in the Heisenberg algebra, which was first observed by Bender, Mead, and Pinsky [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56 (1986), J. Math. Phys. 28, 509 (1987)] and proved by Koornwinder [J. Phys. Phys. 30(4), 1989]. In the same vein two results announced by Bender and Dunne [J. Math. Phys. 29 (8), 1988] connecting a special one-parameter class of Hermitian operator orderings and the continuous Hahn polynomials are also proved.
Limiting cases are studied of the Koornwinder-Macdonald multivariable generalization of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. We recover recently and not so recently introduced families of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in several variables consisting of multivariable Wilson, continuous Hahn and Jacobi type polynomials, respectively. For each class of polynomials we provide systems of difference (or differential) equations, recurrence relations, and expressions for the norms of the polynomials in terms of the norm of the constant polynomial.
In 1999, Grunbaum, Haine and Horozov defined a large family of commutative algebras of ordinary differential operators which have orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions. These polynomials are mutually orthogonal with respect to a Laguerre-type weight distribution, thus providing solutions to Krall's problem. In the present paper we give a new proof of their result which establishes a conjecture, concerning the explicit characterization of the dual commutative algebra of eigenvalues. In particular, for the Koornwinder's generalization of Laguerre polynomials, our approach yields an explicit s…
Matrix spherical functions associated to the compact symmetric pair $(\mathrm{SU}(m+2), \mathrm{S}(\mathrm{U}(2)\times \mathrm{U}(m))$, having reduced root system of type $\mathrm{BC}_2$, are studied. We consider an irreducible $K$-representation $(π,V)$ arising from the $\mathrm{U}(2)$-part of $K$, and the induced representation $\mathrm{Ind}_K^G π$ splits multiplicity free. The corresponding spherical functions, i.e. $Φ\colon G \to \mathrm{End}(V)$ satisfying $Φ(k_1gk_2)=π(k_1)Φ(g)π(k_2)$ for all $g\in G$, $k_1,k_2\in K$, are studied by studying certain leading coefficients which involve hyp…
In this paper, we show that the kernel function of Cauchy type for type $BC$ intertwines the commuting family of van Diejen's $q$-difference operators. This result gives rise to a transformation formula for certain multiple basic hypergeometric series of type $BC$. We also construct a new infinite family of commuting $q$-difference operators for which the Koornwinder polynomials are joint eigenfunctions.
For a long time it has been a challenging goal to identify all orthogonal polynomial systems that occur as eigenfunctions of a linear differential equation. One of the widest classes of such eigenfunctions known so far, is given by Koornwinder's generalized Jacobi polynomials with four parameters $α,β\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$ and $M,N \ge 0$ determining the orthogonality measure on the interval $-1 \le x \le 1$. The corresponding differential equation of order $2α+2β+6$ is presented here as a linear combination of four elementary components which make the corresponding differential operator widely ac…
In the enduring, fruitful research on spectral differential equations with polynomial eigenfunctions, Koornwinder's generalized Laguerre polynomials are playing a prominent role. Being orthogonal on the positive half-line with respect to the Laguerre weight and an additional point mass $N \ge 0$ at the origin, these polynomials satisfy, for any $α\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$, a linear differential equation of order $2α+4$. In the present paper we establish a new elementary representation of the corresponding 'Laguerre-type' differential operator and show its symmetry with respect to the underlying weigh…
We study Cesàro $(C,δ)$ means for two-variable Jacobi polynomials on the parabolic biangle $B=\{(x_1,x_2)\in{\mathbb R}^2:0\leq x_1^2\leq x_2\leq 1\}$. Using the product formula derived by Koornwinder & Schwartz for this polynomial system, the Cesàro operator can be interpreted as a convolution operator. We then show that the Cesàro $(C,δ)$ means of the orthogonal expansion on the biangle are uniformly bounded if $δ>α+β+1$, $α-\frac 12\geqβ\geq 0$. Furthermore, for $δ\geqα+2β+\frac 32$ the means define positive linear operators.
It is well-known that the reproducing kernel of the space of spherical harmonics of fixed homogeneity is given by a Gegenbauer polynomial. By going over to complex variables and restricting to suitable bihomogeneous subspaces, one obtains a reproducing kernel expressed as a Jacobi polynomial, which leads to Koornwinder's celebrated result on the addition formula. In the present paper, the space of Hermitian monogenics, which is the space of polynomial bihomogeneous null-solutions of a set of two complex conjugated Dirac operators, is considered. The reproducing kernel for this space is obtaine…
We discuss the simultaneous diagonalization of a family of commuting difference operators by Koornwinder's multivariable generalization of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The operators constitute a complete set of quantum integrals for a difference version of the $n$-particle quantum Calogero-Sutherland system related to the root system $BC_n$.
We construct a non-polynomial generalization of the $q$-Askey scheme. Whereas the elements of the $q$-Askey scheme are given by $q$-hypergeometric series, the elements of the non-polynomial scheme are given by contour integrals, whose integrands are built from Ruijsenaars' hyperbolic gamma function. Alternatively, the integrands can be expressed in terms of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm, Woronowicz's quantum exponential, or Kurokawa's double sine function. We present the basic properties of all the elements of the scheme, including their integral representations, joint eigenfunction properties…
Szmytkowski derived a certain integral with Gegenbauer polynomials. A natural generalization is to derive lookalike integrals with Jacobi polynomials. Six methods are treated to derive the first integral. The first method should be enough to prove the first integral, but by the other methods there arises remarkable formula such as par example a zero-balanced F3 Appell function which can be converted into a 2F1 hypergeometric function. Another three integrals complete the paper.
For the polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with respect to the measure from the Szego class we prove that the polynomial entropy integrals can grow. The estimate obtained is sharp.
We recast Byerly's formula for integrals of products of Legendre polynomials. Then we adopt the idea to the case of Jacobi polynomials. After that, we use the formula to derive an asymptotic formula for integrals of products of Jacobi polynomials. The asymptotic formula is similar to an analogous one recently obtained by the first author and Jeff Geronimo for a different case. Thus, it suggests that such an asymptotic behavior is rather generic for integrals of products of orthogonal polynomials.
We generalize generating functions for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Laguerre, and Wilson polynomials. These generalizations of generating functions are accomplished through series rearrangement using connection relations with one free parameter for these orthogonal polynomials. We also use orthogonality relations to determine corresponding definite integrals.
Motivated by an expression by Persson and Strang on an integral involving Legendre polynomials, stating that the square of $P_{2n+1}(x)/x$ integrated over $[-1,1]$ is always $2$, we present analog results for Hermite, Chebyshev, Laguerre and Gegenbauer polynomials as well as the original Legendre polynomial with even index.
In this paper, we shall prove the uniform sharp $L^p$ decay estimates for a class of oscillatory integral operators with polynomial phases. By this one-dimensional result, we can use the rotation method to obtain uniform sharp $L^p$ estimates of certain higher-dimensional oscillatory integral operators.
We consider in this work planar polynomial differential systems having a polynomial first integral. We prove that these systems can be obtained from a linear system through a polynomial change of variables.
We give an algorithm for deciding whether a planar polynomial differential system has a first integral which factorizes as a product of defining polynomials of curves with only one place at infinity. In the affirmative case, our algorithm computes a minimal first integral. In addition, we solve the Poincaré problem for the class of systems which admit a polynomial first integral as above in the sense that the degree of the minimal first integral can be computed from the reduction of singularities of the corresponding vector field.
By applying an integral representation for $q^{k^{2}}$ we systematically derive a large number of new Fourier and Mellin transform pairs and establish new integral representations for a variety of $q$-functions and polynomials that naturally arise from combinatorics, analysis, and orthogonal polynomials corresponding to indeterminate moment problems. These functions include $q$-Bessel functions, the Ramanujan function, Stieltjes--Wigert polynomials, $q$-Hermite and $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials, and the $q$-exponential functions $e_{q}$, $E_{q}$ and $\mathcal{E}_{q}$. Their representations are …
The aim of this paper is two fold. We derive an integral representation for the generalized 2D Zernike polynomials which are of independent interest and give the explicit expression of the action of the Cauchy transform on them.
In this paper we generalize and specialize generating functions for classical orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials. We derive a generalization of the generating function for Gegenbauer polynomials through extension a two element sequence of generating functions for Jacobi polynomials. Specializations of generating functions are accomplished through the re-expression of Gauss hypergeometric functions in terms of less general functions. Definite integrals which correspond to the presented orthogonal polynomial series expansions are also given.
We present an integral product formula for Jack polynomials of two variables, extending that of zonal polynomials. It provides another way to find the explicit integral representation for the generalized Bessel function of type $ B_2 $, as presented in \cite{D}.
We analyze the polynomial solutions of a nonlinear integral equation, generalizing the work of C. Bender and E. Ben-Naim. We show that, in some cases, an orthogonal solution exists and we give its general form in terms of kernel polynomials.
We study the zero location and the asymptotic behavior of iterated integrals of polynomials. Borwein-Chen-Dilcher's polynomials play an important role in this issue. For these polynomials we find their strong asymptotics and give the limit measure of their zero distribution. We apply these results to describe the zero asymptotic distribution of iterated integrals of ultraspherical polynomials with parameters $(2α+1)/2$, $α\in \mathbb{Z}_+$.
We show how the combined use of the generating function method and of the theory of multivariable Hermite polynomials is naturally suited to evaluate integrals of gaussian functions and of multiple products of Hermite polynomials.
In Part 1 we study the spherical functions on compact symmetric pairs of arbitrary rank under a suitable multiplicity freeness assumption and additional conditions on the branching rules. The spherical functions are taking values in the spaces of linear operators of a finite dimensional representation of the subgroup, so the spherical functions are matrix-valued. Under these assumptions these functions can be described in terms of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials in several variables, where the number of variables is the rank of the compact symmetric pair. Moreover, these polynomials are u…
In this paper we consider the problem on uniform estimates for generalized oscillatory integrals given by Mittag- Leffler functions with the homogeneous polynomial phase. We obtain a variant of Ricci-Stein Lemma and invariant estimates for corresponding integrals.
We show that for a natural polynomial Hamiltonian system the existence of a single Darboux polynomial (a partial polynomial first integral) is equivalent to the existence of an additional first integral functionally independent with the Hamiltonian function. Moreover, we show that, in a case when the degree of potential is odd, the system does not admit any proper Darboux polynomial, i.e., the only Darboux polynomials are first integrals.
We give integral representations for multiple Hermite and multiple Hermite polynomials of both type I and II. We also show how these are connected with double integral representations of certain kernels from random matrix theory.
We derive a novel integral representations of Jacobi polynomials in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. Such representation is then used to give the explicit integral representation for the Heat kernel on the quantized Riemann sphere.
We study in detail two families of $q$-Fibonacci polynomials and $q$-Lucas polynomials, which are defined by non-conventional three-term recurrences. They were recently introduced by Cigler and have been then employed by Cigler and Zeng to construct novel $q$-extensions of classical Hermite polynomials. We show that both of these $q$-polynomial families exhibit simple transformation properties with respect to the classical Fourier integral transform.
