This paper is devoted to the problem of sample path large deviations for the Markov processes on R_+^N having a constant but different transition mechanism on each boundary set {x:x_i=0 for i\notinΛ, x_i>0 for i\inΛ}. The global sample path large deviation principle and an integral representation of the rate function are derived from local large deviation estimates. Our results complete the proof of Dupuis and Ellis of the sample path large deviation principle for Markov processes describing a general class of queueing networks.
We establish the large deviation principle for solutions of one-dimensional SDEs with discontinuous coefficients. The main statement is formulated in a form similar to the classical Wentzel--Freidlin theorem, but under the considerably weaker assumption that the coefficients have no discontinuities of the second kind.
In this paper we examine the asymptotic theory for U-statistics and V-statistics of discontinuous Ito semimartingales that are observed at high frequency. For different types of kernel functions we show laws of large numbers and associated stable central limit theorems. In most of the cases the limiting process will be conditionally centered Gaussian. The structure of the kernel function determines whether the jump and/or the continuous part of the semimartingale contribute to the limit.
In this paper we prove a large deviation principle (LDP) for the empirical measure of a general system of mean-field interacting diffusions with singular drift (as the number of particles tends to infinity) and show convergence to the associated McKean-Vlasov equation. Along the way, we prove an extended version of the Varadhan Integral Lemma for a discontinuous change of measure and subsequently an LDP for Gibbs and Gibbs-like measures with singular potentials.
A deterministic walk in a random environment can be understood as a general random process with finite-range dependence that starts repeating a loop once it reaches a site it has visited before. Such process lacks the Markov property. We study the exponential decay of the probabilities that the walk will reach sites located far away from the origin. We also study a similar problem for the continuous analogue: the process that is a solution to an ODE with random coefficients. In this second model the environment also has "teleports" which are the regions from where the process can make disconti…
We establish Cramér type moderate deviation (MD}) results for heavy trimmed L-statistics; we obtain our results under a very mild smoothness condition on the inversion $F^{-1}$ ($F$ is the underlying distribution of i.i.d. observations) near two points, where trimming occurs, we assume also some smoothness of weights of the L-statistic. Our results complement previous work on Cramér type large deviations (LD) for trimmed L-statistics by Gribkova (2016) and Callaert et al. (1982).
In this paper, we propose a new approach to the investigation of asymptotic properties of trimmed $L$-statistics and we apply it to the Cramér type large deviation problem. Our results can be compared with ones in Callaert et al.(1982) -- the first and, as far as we know, the single article, where some results on probabilities of large deviations for the trimmed $L$-statistics were obtained, but under some strict and unnatural conditions. Our approach is to approximate the trimmed $L$-statistic by a non-trimmed $L$-statistic (with smooth weight function) based on Winsorized random variables. U…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate moderate deviations for the Durbin-Watson statistic associated with the stable first-order autoregressive process where the driven noise is also given by a first-order autoregressive process. We first establish a moderate deviation principle for both the least squares estimator of the unknown parameter of the autoregressive process as well as for the serial correlation estimator associated with the driven noise. It enables us to provide a moderate deviation principle for the Durbin-Watson statistic in the easy case where the driven noise is normally …
We consider a multinomial distribution, where the number of cells increases and the cell-probabilities decreases as the number of observations grows. The probabilities of large deviations of statistics, which has form of a sum of Borel functions of cell-frequencies, are studied. Large deviation results for the power-divergence statistics and its most popular special variants, as well as for some count statistics are derived as consequences of general theorems.
Let $(ξ_i)_{i=1,...,n}$ be a sequence of independent and symmetric random variables. We consider the upper bounds on tail probabilities of self-normalized deviations $$ \mathbf{P} \Big( \max_{1\leq k \leq n} \sum_{i=1}^{k} |ξ_i|\big/ \big(\sum_{i=1}^{n} |ξ_i|^β\big)^{1/β} \geq x \Big) $$ for $x>0$ and $β>1.$ Our bound is the best that can be obtained from the Bernstein inequality under the present assumption. An application to Student's $t$-statistics is also given.
In this paper, we derive a handable expression for the Jacobi process semi group which is given by a bilinear series involving Jacobi polynomials. Our attempt uses a subordination of the considered process by means of a suitable random change. Once we did, we will be able, in the ultraspheric case, to derive a LDP for a family of estimators based on a single trajectory of the process.
We prove a moderate deviation principle for subgraph count statistics of Erdos-Renyi random graphs. This is equivalent in showing a moderate deviation principle for the trace of a power of a Bernoulli random matrix. It is done via an estimation of the log-Laplace transform and the Gaertner-Ellis theorem. We obtain upper bounds on the upper tail probabilities of the number of occurrences of small subgraphs. The method of proof is used to show supplemental moderate deviation principles for a class of symmetric statistics, including non-degenerate U-statistics with independent or Markovian entrie…
The purpose of the present paper is to establish moderate deviation principles for a rather general class of random variables fulfilling certain bounds of the cumulants. We apply a celebrated lemma of the theory of large deviations probabilities due to Rudzkis, Saulis and Statulevicius. The examples of random objects we treat include dependency graphs, subgraph-counting statistics in Erdős-Rényi random graphs and $U$-statistics. Moreover, we prove moderate deviation principles for certain statistics appearing in random matrix theory, namely characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices…
We consider two-dimensional determinantal processes which are rotation-invariant and study the fluctuations of the number of points in disks. Based on the theory of mod-phi convergence, we obtain Berry-Esseen as well as precise moderate to large deviation estimates for these statistics. These results are consistent with the Coulomb gas heuristic from the physics literature. We also obtain functional limit theorems for the stochastic process $(\# D_r)_{r>0}$ when the radius $r$ of the disk $D_r$ is growing in different regimes. We present several applications to invariant determinantal process,…
In this paper, we present a novel extension to the classical path coupling method to statistical mechanical models which we refer to as aggregate path coupling. In conjunction with large deviations estimates, we use this aggregate path coupling method to prove rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics for a large class of statistical mechanical models, including models that exhibit discontinuous phase transitions which have traditionally been more difficult to analyze rigorously. The parameter region for rapid mixing for the generalized Curie-Weiss-Potts model is derived as a new application of the agg…
We investigate the fluctuations and large deviations of the root of largest modulus in a model of random polynomial with independent complex Gaussian coefficients (Kac polynomials). The fluctuations were recently computed by R. Butez (arxiv 1704.02761) and involve a Fredholm determinant. The precise large deviations show a particular function defined by a series of mutiple integrals in the same vein.
Record numbers are basic statistics in random walks, whose deviation principles are not very clear so far. In this paper, the asymptotic probabilities of large and moderate deviations for numbers of weak records in right continuous or left continuous random walks are proved.
In this paper we investigate the statistics of large waiting times (with respect to the total waiting time) for Bernoulli processes. We determine the corresponding rate functions explicitly and prove a large deviations asymptotic. By this we have estabished a large deviation principle for which the rate function is not the Legendre transform of some free energy function.
A new large deviation results for the Pearson chi-square and Log-likelihood ratio statistics are obtained. Here attention is focused on the case when the number of groups increases to infinity and the probabilities of groups decreases to zero, as the sample size tends to infinity.
Two-sample $U$-statistics are widely used in a broad range of applications, including those in the fields of biostatistics and econometrics. In this paper, we establish sharp Cramér-type moderate deviation theorems for Studentized two-sample $U$-statistics in a general framework, including the two-sample $t$-statistic and Studentized Mann-Whitney test statistic as prototypical examples. In particular, a refined moderate deviation theorem with second-order accuracy is established for the two-sample $t$-statistic. These results extend the applicability of the existing statistical methodologies f…
In this paper we study the large deviations of time averaged mean square displacement (TAMSD) for Gaussian processes. The theory of large deviations is related to the exponential decay of probabilities of large fluctuations in random systems. From the mathematical point of view a given statistics satisfies the large deviation principle, if the probability that it belongs to a certain range decreases exponentially. The TAMSD is one of the main statistics used in the problem of anomalous diffusion detection. Applying the theory of generalized chi-squared distribution and sub-gamma random variabl…
Define the incremental fractional Brownian field $B_{H}(s+τ)-B_{H}(s), H\in (0,1)$, where $B_{H}(s)$ is a standard fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H\in(0,1)$. In this paper we derive the exact asymptotic behaviour of the maximum $\max_{(τ,s)\in[0,1]\times[0,T]} (B_{H}(s+τ)-B_{H}(s)) $ for any $H\in (0,1/2)$ complimenting thus the result of Zholud (2008) for the Brownian motion.
Cramér type moderate deviation theorems quantify the accuracy of the relative error of the normal approximation and provide theoretical justifications for many commonly used methods in statistics. In this paper, we develop a new randomized concentration inequality and establish a Cramér type moderate deviation theorem for general self-normalized processes which include many well-known Studentized nonlinear statistics. In particular, a sharp moderate deviation theorem under optimal moment conditions is established for Studentized $U$-statistics.
We study deviation of U-statistics when samples have heavy-tailed distribution so the kernel of the U-statistic does not have bounded exponential moments at any positive point. We obtain an exponential upper bound for the tail of the U-statistics which clearly denotes two regions of tail decay, the first is a Gaussian decay and the second behaves like the tail of the kernel. For several common U-statistics, we also show the upper bound has the right rate of decay as well as sharp constants by obtaining rough logarithmic limits which in turn can be used to develop LDP for U-statistics. In spite…
A two-dimensional statistical model of N charged particles interacting via logarithmic repulsion in the presence of an oppositely charged regular closed region K whose charge density is determined by its equilibrium potential at an inverse temperature βis investigated. When the charge on the region, s, is greater than N, the particles accumulate in a neighborhood of the boundary of K, and form a point process in the complex plane. We describe the weak* limits of the joint intensities of this point process and show that it is exponentially likely to find the process in a neighborhood of the equ…
The large deviation principle is proved for a class of $L^2$-valued processes that arise from the coarse-graining of a random field. Coarse-grained processes of this kind form the basis of the analysis of local mean-field models in statistical mechanics by exploiting the long-range nature of the interaction function defining such models. In particular, the large deviation principle is used in a companion paper to derive the variational principles that characterize equilibrium macrostates in statistical models of two-dimensional and quasi-geostrophic turbulence. Such macrostates correspond to l…
We present new M-estimators of the mean and variance of real valued random variables, based on PAC-Bayes bounds. We analyze the non-asymptotic minimax properties of the deviations of those estimators for sample distributions having either a bounded variance or a bounded variance and a bounded kurtosis. Under those weak hypotheses, allowing for heavy-tailed distributions, we show that the worst case deviations of the empirical mean are suboptimal. We prove indeed that for any confidence level, there is some M-estimator whose deviations are of the same order as the deviations of the empirical me…
Consider Ginibre's ensemble of $N \times N$ non-Hermitian random matrices in which all entries are independent complex Gaussians of mean zero and variance $\frac{1}{N}$. As $N \uparrow \infty$ the normalized counting measure of the eigenvalues converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk in the complex plane. In this note we describe fluctuations about this {\em Circular Law}. First we obtain finite $N$ formulas for the covariance of certain linear statistics of the eigenvalues. Asymptotics of these objects coupled with a theorem of Costin and Lebowitz then result in central limit theorem…
