We present a new link invariant which depends on a representation of the link group in SO(3). The computer calculations indicate that an abelian version of this invariant is expressed in terms of the Alexander polynomial of the link. On the other hand, if we use non abelian representation, we get the squared non abelian Reidemeister torsion (at least for some torus knots).
Special generic maps are smooth maps between smooth manifolds with only definite fold points as their singularities. The problem of whether a closed $n$-manifold admits a special generic map into Euclidean $p$-space for $1 \leq p \leq n$ was studied by several authors including Burlet, de Rham, Porto, Furuya, Èliašberg, Saeki, and Sakuma. In this paper, we study rational homology $n$-spheres that admit special generic maps into $\mathbb{R}^{p}$ for $p<n$. We use the technique of Stein factorization to derive a necessary homological condition for the existence of such maps for odd $n$. We exami…
A so-called special generic map is by definition a map of smooth manifolds all of whose singularities are definite fold points. It is in general an open problem posed by Saeki in 1993 to determine the set of integers $p$ for which a given homotopy sphere admits a special generic map into $\mathbb{R}^{p}$. By means of the technique of Stein factorization we introduce and study certain special generic maps of homotopy spheres into Euclidean spaces called standard. Modifying a construction due to Weiss, we show that standard special generic maps give naturally rise to a filtration of the group of…
In the present work, we study the decompositions of codimension-one transitions that alter the singular set the of stable maps of $S^3$ into $\mathbb{R}^3,$ the topological behaviour of the singular set and the singularities in the branch set that involves cuspidal curves and swallowtails that alter the singular set. We also analyse the effects of these decompositions on the global invariants with prescribed branch sets.
We show that for every integer $b\geq 3$, there exists a link in a $b$-bridge position with respect to a critical bridge sphere. In fact, for each $b$, we construct an infinite family of links which we call square whose bridge spheres are critical.
In this paper, we characterize non-hyperbolic 3-component links in the 3-sphere whose exteriors contain essential 3-punctured spheres with non-integral boundary slopes. We also show the existence of embeddings of some multibranched surfaces in the 3-sphere which satisfy some homological conditions to be embedded in the 3-sphere.
We prove that for every analytic curve in the complex plane, Euclidean and spherical arc-lengths are global conformal parameters. We also prove that for any analytic curve in the hyperbolic plane, hyperbolic arc-length is also a global parameter. We generalize some of these results to the case of analytic curves in Euclidean n-space and complex n-space and we discuss the situation of curves in the Riemann sphere.
It is an open problem whether Kirk's $σ$ invariant is the complete obstruction to a link map $S^2\cup S^2\to S^4$ being link homotopically trivial. With the objective of constructing counterexamples, Li proposed a link homotopy invariant $ω$ that is defined on the kernel of $σ$ and also obstructs link nullhomotopy. We show that $ω$ is determined by $σ$, and is a strictly weaker invariant.
A closed, orientable, splitting surface in an oriented $3$-manifold is a topologically minimal surface of index $n$ if its associated disk complex is $(n-2)$-connected but not $(n-1)$-connected. A critical surface is a topologically minimal surface of index $2$. In this paper, we use an equivalent combinatorial definition of critical surfaces to construct the first known critical bridge spheres for nontrivial links.
