We show that for every integer $b\geq 3$, there exists a link in a $b$-bridge position with respect to a critical bridge sphere. In fact, for each $b$, we construct an infinite family of links which we call square whose bridge spheres are critical.
We show that there exists an infinite family of knots, each of which has, for each integer k>=0, a destabilized (2k+5)-bridge sphere. We also show that, for each integer n>=4, there exists a knot with a destabilized 3-bridge sphere and a destabilized n-bridge sphere.
We construct a smooth Riemannian metric on any 3-manifold with the property that there are genus zero embedded minimal surfaces of arbitrarily high Morse index.
In this paper we construct families of homology spheres which bound 4-manifolds with intersection forms isomorphic to $-E_8$. We show that these families have arbitrary large correction terms. This result says that among homology spheres, the difference of the maximal rank of minimal sub-lattice of definite filling and the maximal rank of even definite filling is arbitrarily large.
The author, in her previous paper, constructed an infinite family of 3-bridge links each of which admits infinitely many 3-bridge spheres up to isotopy. In this paper, we prove that if a prime, unsplittable link $L$ in $S^3$ admits infinitely many 3-bridge spheres up to isotopy then $L$ belongs to the family.
We show that for any given closed orientable 3-manifold M with a Heegaard surface of genus g, any positive integers b and n, there exists a knot K in M which admits a (g,b)-bridge splitting of distance greater than n with respect to the Heegaard surface except for (g,b) = (0,1), (0,2).
A bridge sphere is said to be keen weakly reducible if it admits a unique pair of disjoint compressing disks on opposite sides. In particular, such a bridge sphere is weakly reducible, not perturbed, and not topologically minimal in the sense of David Bachman. In terms of Jennifer Schultens' width complex, a link in bridge position with respect to a keen weakly reducible bridge sphere is distance one away from a local minimum. In this paper, we give infinitely many examples of keen weakly reducible bridge spheres for links in $b$ bridge position for $b \geq 4.$
In this paper, we give an isotopy classification of 3-bridge spheres of 3-bridge arborescent links, which are not Montesinos links. To this end, we prove a certain refinement of a theorem of J.S. Birman and H.M. Hilden on the relation between bridge presentations of links and Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds. In the proof of this result, we also give an answer to a question by K. Morimoto on the classification of genus-2 Heegaard splittings of certain graph manifolds.
Any 2-bridge knot in the 3-sphere has a bridge sphere from which any other bridge surface can be obtained by stabilization, meridional stabilization, perturbation and proper isotopy.
A closed, orientable, splitting surface in an oriented $3$-manifold is a topologically minimal surface of index $n$ if its associated disk complex is $(n-2)$-connected but not $(n-1)$-connected. A critical surface is a topologically minimal surface of index $2$. In this paper, we use an equivalent combinatorial definition of critical surfaces to construct the first known critical bridge spheres for nontrivial links.
We compute the genus zero bridge numbers and give lower bounds on the genus one bridge numbers for a large class of sufficiently generic hyperbolic twisted torus knots. As a result, the bridge spectra of these knots have two gaps which can be chosen to be arbitrarily large, providing the first known examples of hyperbolic knots exhibiting this property. In addition, we show that there are Berge and Dean knots with arbitrarily large genus one bridge numbers, and as a result, we give solutions to problems of Eudave-Muñoz concerning tunnel number one knots.
We show that essential punctured spheres in the complement of links with distance three bridge spheres have bounded complexity. We define the operation of tangle product, a generalization of both connected sum and Conway product. Finally, we use the bounded complexity of essential punctured spheres to show that the bridge number of a tangle product is at least the sum of the bridge numbers of the two factor links up to a constant error.
We calculate the bridge distance for $m$-bridge knots/links in the $3$-sphere with sufficiently complicated $2m$-plat projections. In particular we show that if the underlying braid of the plat has $n - 1$ rows of twists and all its exponents have absolute value greater than or equal to three then the distance of the bridge sphere is exactly $\lceil n/(2(m - 2)) \rceil$, where $\lceil x \rceil$ is the smallest integer greater than or equal to $x$. As a corollary, we conclude that if such a diagram has more than $4m(m-2)$ rows then the bridge sphere defining the plat projection is the unique mi…
For a bridge decomposition of a link in the $3$-sphere, we define the Goeritz group to be the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the $3$-sphere that preserve each of the bridge sphere and link setwise. After describing basic properties of this group, we discuss the asymptotic behavior of the minimal pseudo-Anosov entropies. This gives an application to the asymptotic behavior of the minimal entropies for the original Goeritz groups of Heegaard splittings of the $3$-sphere and the real projective space.
In this paper, we characterize all links in the 3-sphere with bridge number at least three that have a bridge sphere of distance two. We show that a link L has a bridge sphere of distance at most two then it falls into at least one of three categories: (1) The exterior of L contains an essential meridional sphere. (2) L can be decomposed as a tangle product of a Montesinos tangle with an essential tangle in a way that respects the bridge surface and either the Montesinos tangle is rational or the essential tangle contains an incompressible, boundary-incompressible annulus. (3) L is obtained by…
Suppose a knot in a $3$-manifold is in $n$-bridge position. We consider a reduction of the knot along a bridge disk $D$ and show that the result is an $(n-1)$-bridge position if and only if there is a bridge disk $E$ such that $(D, E)$ is a cancelling pair. We apply this to an unknot $K$, in $n$-bridge position with respect to a bridge sphere $S$ in the $3$-sphere, to consider the relationship between a bridge disk $D$ and a disk in the $3$-sphere that $K$ bounds. We show that if a reduction of $K$ along $D$ yields an $(n-1)$-bridge position, then $K$ bounds a disk that contains $D$ as a subdi…
Let $G$ be a usc decomposition of $S^n$, $H_G$ denote the set of nondegenerate elements and $π$ be the natural projection of $S^n$ onto $S^n/G$. Suppose that each point in the decomposition space has arbitrarily small neighborhoods with ($n-1$)-sphere frontiers or boundaries which miss $π(H_G)$. If all the arcs are tame in the particular area on the boundary of an $n$-cell $C$ in $S^n$, then this paper shows that this condition implies $S^n/G$ is homeomorphic to $S^n$ ($n\geq 4$). This answers a weak form of a conjecture asked by Daverman [2, p. 61]. In the case of $n=3$, the strong form of th…
We give a complete characterization of those essential simple loops on 2-bridge spheres of 2-bridge links which are null-homotopic in the link complements. By using this result, we describe all upper-meridian-pair-preserving epimorphisms between 2-bridge link groups.
The purpose of this note is to announce complete answers to the following questions. (1) For an essential simple loop on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement, when is it null-homotopic in the link complement? (2) For two distinct essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement, when are they homotopic in the link complement? We also announce applications of these results to character varieties and McShane's identity.
In this paper and its prequel, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in an even Heckoid orbifold for a 2-bridge link to be homotopic in the orbifold. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for an essential simple loop on a 2-bridge sphere in an even Heckoid orbifold for a 2-bridge link to be peripheral or torsion in the orbifold. The prequel treated the case when the 2-bridge link is a $(2,p)$-torus link, and this paper treats the remaining cases.
In this paper and its two sequels, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement to be homotopic in the link complement. This paper treats the case when the 2-bridge link is a $(2,p)$-torus link, where more cases of homotopy arise, and its sequels will treat the remaining cases.
In this paper and its sequel, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in an even Heckoid orbifold for a 2-bridge link to be homotopic in the orbifold. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for an essential simple loop on a 2-bridge sphere in an even Heckoid orbifold for a 2-bridge link to be peripheral or torsion in the orbifold. This paper treats the case when the 2-bridge link is a $(2,p)$-torus link, and its sequel will treat the remaining cases.
We show that if $K$ is a knot in $S^3$ and $Σ$ is a bridge sphere for $K$ with high distance and $2n$ punctures, the number of perturbations of $K$ required to interchange the two balls bounded by $Σ$ via an isotopy is $n$. We also construct a knot with two different bridge spheres with $2n$ and $2n-1$ bridges respectively for which any common perturbation has at least $3n-1$ bridges. We generalize both of these results to bridge surfaces for knots in any 3-manifold.
This is the second of a series of papers which give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement to be homotopic in the link complement. The first paper of the series treated the case of the 2-bridge torus links. In this paper, we treat the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(2n+1)$ and $(n+1)/(3n+2)$, where $n \ge 2$ is an arbitrary integer.
We investigate great circle links in the three-sphere, the class of links where each component is a great circle. Using the geometry of their complements, we classify such links up to five components. For any two-bridge knot complement, there is a finite cover that is the complement of a link of great circles in $S^3$. We show that for many two-bridge knots, this cover contains a closed incompressible surface. Infinitely many fillings of the two-bridge knot lift to fillings of great circle link where the incompressibility of this surface is preserved. Using this, we show that infinitely many f…
We introduce bridge trisections of knotted surfaces in the four-sphere. This description is inspired by the work of Gay and Kirby on trisections of four-manifolds and extends the classical concept of bridge splittings of links in the three-sphere to four dimensions. We prove that every knotted surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection (a decomposition into three simple pieces) and that any two bridge trisections for a fixed surface are related by a sequence of stabilizations and destabilizations. We also introduce a corresponding diagrammatic representation of knotted surfaces and …
Meier and Zupan showed that every surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection and can therefore be represented by three simple tangles. This raises the possibility of applying methods from link homology to knotted surfaces. We use link homology to construct an invariant of knotted surfaces (up to isotopy) which distinguishes the unknotted sphere from certain knotted spheres. We also construct an invariant of a bridge-trisected surface in the the form of an $A_\infty$-algebra. Both invariants are defined by a novel connection between $A_\infty$-algebras and Manolescu and Ozsváth's hyp…
The Meridional Rank Conjecture asks whether the bridge number of a knot in $S^3$ is equal to the minimal number of meridians needed to generate the fundamental group of its complement. In this paper we investigate the analogous conjecture for knotted surfaces in $S^4$. Towards this end, we give a construction to produce classical knots with quotients sending meridians to elements of any finite order and which detect their meridional ranks. We establish the equality of bridge number and meridional rank for these knots and knotted spheres obtained from them by twist-spinning. On the other hand, …
We show that there are hyperbolic tunnel-number one knots with arbitrarily high bridge number and that "most" tunnel-number one knots are not one-bridge with respect to an unknotted torus. The proof relies on a connection between bridge number and a certain distance in the curve complex of a genus-two surface.
This is the last of a series of papers which give a necessary and sufficient condition for two essential simple loops on a 2-bridge sphere in a 2-bridge link complement to be homotopic in the link complement. The first paper of the series treated the case of the 2-bridge torus links, and the second paper treated the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(2n+1)$ and $(n+1)/(3n+2)$, where $n \ge 2$ is an arbitrary integer. In this paper, we first treat the case of 2-bridge links of slope $n/(mn+1)$ and $(n+1)/((m+1)n+m)$, where $m \ge 3$ is an arbitrary integer, and then treat the remaining cases b…
Suppose M is a closed irreducible orientable 3-manifold, K is a knot in M, P and Q are bridge surfaces for K and K is not removable with respect to Q. We show that either Q is equivalent to P or $d(K,P) \leq 2-χ(Q-K)$. If K is not a two bridge knot, then the result holds even if K is removable with respect to Q. As a corollary we show that if a knot in the 3-sphere has high distance with respect to some bridge sphere and low bridge number, then the knot has a unique minimal bridge position.
We consider the cosmetic surgery problem for two-bridge knots in the 3-sphere. It is seen that all the two-bridge knots at most 9 crossings other than $9_{27} = S(49,19)=C[2,2,-2,2,2,-2]$ admits no purely cosmetic surgery pairs. Then we show that any two-bridge knot of the Conway form $[2x,2,-2x,2x,2,-2x]$ with $x \ge 1$ admits no cosmetic surgery pairs yielding homology 3-spheres, where $9_{27}$ appears for $x=1$. Our advantage to prove this is using the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ Casson invariant.
Following Riley's work, for each 2-bridge link $K(r)$ of slope $r\in\QQ$ and an integer or a half-integer $n$ greater than 1, we introduce the {\it Heckoid orbifold $\orbs(r;n)$} and the {\it Heckoid group $\Hecke(r;n)=π_1(\orbs(r;n))$ of index $n$ for $K(r)$}. When $n$ is an integer, $\orbs(r;n)$ is called an {\it even} Heckoid orbifold; in this case, the underlying space is the exterior of $K(r)$, and the singular set is the lower tunnel of $K(r)$ with index $n$. The main purpose of this note is to announce answers to the following questions for even Heckoid orbifolds. (1) For an essential s…
First, we extend Otal's result for the trivial knot to trivial spatial graphs, namely, we show that for any bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$ for a trivial spatial graph $Γ$, there exists a 2-sphere $F$ such that $F$ contains $Γ$ and $F$ intersects $S^2$ in a single loop. Next, we introduce two invariants for spatial graphs. As a generalization of the bridge number for knots, we define the {\em bridge string number} $bs(Γ)$ of a spatial graph $Γ$ as the minimal number of $|Γ\cap S^2|$ for all bridge tangle decomposing sphere $S^2$. As a spatial version of the representativity for a graph …
We construct homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere with arbitrarily small k-dilation for each k greater than (m + 1)/2. We prove that homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere cannot have arbitrarily small k-dilation for k less than or equal to (m + 1)/2.
We give upper bounds of the Matveev complexities of two-bridge link complements by constructing their spines explicitly. In particular, we determine the complexities for an infinite sequence of two-bridge links corresponding to the continued fractions of the form [2,1,...,1,2]. We also give upper bounds for the 3-manifolds obtained as meridian-cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere along two-bridge links.
Suppose a link K in a 3-manifold M is in bridge position with respect to two different bridge surfaces P and Q, both of which are c-weakly incompressible in the complement of K. Then either P and Q can be properly isotoped to intersect in a nonempty collection of curves that are essential (including non-meridional) on both surfaces, or K is a Conway product with respect to an incompressible Conway sphere that naturally decomposes both P and Q into bridge surfaces for the respective factor link(s).
We analyze the orbifolds that can be obtained as quotients of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a Heegaard splitting of genus two by their orientation preserving isometry groups. The genus two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exactly the hyperbolic 2-fold branched coverings of 3-bridge links. If the 3-bridge link is a knot, we prove that the underlying topological space of the quotient orbifold is either the 3-sphere or a lens space and we describe the combinatorial setting of the singular set for each possible isometry group. In the case of 3-bridge links with two or three components, the situation …
We use the combinatorial techniques of graphs of intersection to study reducible Dehn surgeries on knots in the three-sphere. In particular, in the event that a reducible surgery on a knot K in the three-sphere of slope r produces a manifold with more than two connected summands, we show that r is bounded in absolute value by the bridge number of K. As a consequence, this possibility is ruled out for knots with bridge number at most five and for positive braid closures.
In this paper, we define the rectangle condition on the bridge sphere for a $n$-bridge decomposition of a knot whose definition is analogous to the definition of the rectangle condition for Heegaard splittings of $3$-manifolds. We show that the satisfaction of the rectangle condition for a $n$-bridge decomposition can guarantee that the Hempel distance for the $n$-bridge decomposition is greater than or equal to $2$. In particular, we give an interesting family of alternating 3-bridge knots by using the rectangle condition and a modified train track argument.
Schubert proved that, given a composite link $K$ with summands $K_{1}$ and $K_{2}$, the bridge number of $K$ satisfies the following equation: $$β(K)=β(K_{1})+β(K_{2})-1.$$ In ``Conway Produts and Links with Multiple Bridge Surfaces", Scharlemann and Tomova proved that, given links $K_{1}$ and $K_{2}$, there is a Conway product $K_{1}\times_{c}K_{2}$ such that $$β(K_{1}\times_{c} K_{2}) \leq β(K_{1}) + β(K_{2}) - 1$$ In this paper, we define the generalized Conway product $K_{1}\ast_{c}K_{2}$ and prove the lower bound $β(K_{1}\ast_{c}K_{2}) \geq β(K_{1})-1$ where $K_{1}$ is the distinguished f…
Let L be a link in the 3-sphere that is in thin position but not in bridge position and let P be a thin level sphere. We generalize a result of Wu by giving a bound on the number of disjoint irreducible compressing disks that P can have, including identifying thin spheres with unique compressing disks. We also give conditions under which P must be incompressible on a particular side or be weakly incompressible. If P is strongly compressible we describe how a pair of compressing disks must lie relative to the link.
We discuss 3-manifolds which are cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere, branched over 2-bridge knots and links. Different descriptions of these manifolds are presented: polyhedral, Heegaard diagram, Dehn surgery and coloured graph constructions. Using these descriptions, we give presentations for their fundamental groups, which are cyclic presentations in the case of 2-bridge knots. The homology groups are given for a wide class of cases. Moreover, we prove that each singly-cyclic branched covering of a 2-bridge link is the composition of a meridian-cyclic branched covering of a determined link and…

We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group …
We call a knot in the 3-sphere $SU(2)$-simple if all representations of the fundamental group of its complement which map a meridian to a trace-free element in $SU(2)$ are binary dihedral. This is a generalisation of being a 2-bridge knot. Pretzel knots with bridge number $\geq 3$ are not $SU(2)$-simple. We provide an infinite family of knots $K$ with bridge number $\geq 3$ which are $SU(2)$-simple. One expects the instanton knot Floer homology $I^\natural(K)$ of a $SU(2)$-simple knot to be as small as it can be -- of rank equal to the knot determinant $\det(K)$. In fact, the complex underlyin…
Thin position for knots in the 3-sphere was introduced by Gabai and has been used in a variety of contexts. We conjecture an analogue to a theorem of Schubert and Schultens concerning the bridge number of satellite knots. For a satellite knot K, we use the companion torus T to provide a lower bound for w(K), proving the conjecture for K with a 2-bridge companion. As a corollary, we find thin position for any satellite knot with a braid pattern and 2-bridge companion.
We give a variation of McShane's identity, which describes the cusp shape of a hyperbolic 2-bridge link in terms of the complex translation lengths of simple loops on the bridge sphere. We also explicitly determine the set of end invariants of $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-characters of the once-punctured torus corresponding to the holonomy representations of the complete hyperbolic structures of 2-bridge link complements.
For any hyperbolic genus one 2-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, we show that the resulting manifold by $r$-surgery on the knot has left-orderable fundamental group if the slope $r$ lies in some range which depends on the knot.
