We study manifolds with split-complex structure and apply some general results to the study of Lorentz surfaces. In particular, we apply our results to timelike minimal immersions. The conformal realization of these surfaces is obtained using a representation based on loop groups. The classical Weierstrass representation (integral formula) is recovered as a byproduct of this general setting.
Using techniques of integrable systems, we study a Weierstrass representation formula for timelike surfaces with prescribed mean curvature in Minkowski 3-space. It is shown that timelike minimal surfaces are obtained by integrating a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in Minkowski 3-space. The relationship between timelike minimal surfaces and bosonic Nambu-Goto string worldsheets in spacetime is also discussed in the appendix.
We show that to every maximal surface with conelike singularities in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{L}^3$ that can be locally represented as the graph of a smooth function, there exists a corresponding timelike minimal surface in $\mathbb{L}^3$. There exists a linear transformation between such a maximal surface and its corresponding timelike minimal surface and it maps the singularities of one to the singularities of the other. Moreover, this transformation establishes a one-one correspondence between such maximal surfaces and timelike minimal surfaces and also preserves the one-one propert…
We consider the timelike minimal surface problem in Minkowski spacetimes and show local and global existence of such surfaces having arbitrary dimension $\geq 2$ and arbitrary co-dimension, provided they are initially close to a flat plane.
In the 3-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space we prove that the sign of the Gaussian curvature of any timelike minimal surface is determined by the degeneracy and the orientations of the two null curves that generate the surface. Moreover, we also investigate the behavior of the Gaussian curvature near singular points of a timelike minimal surface which admits some kind of singular points.
Timelike surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group with left invariant semi-Riemannian metric are studied. In particular, non-vertical timelike minimal surfaces are characterized by the non-conformal Lorentz harmonic maps into the de Sitter two phere. On the basis of the characterization, the generalized Weierstrass type representation will be established through the loop group decompositions.
Bour's minimal surface has remarkable properties in three dimensional Minkowski space. We reveal the definite and indefinite cases of the Bour's surface using Weierstrass representations, and give some differential geometric properties of the astonishing maximal and minimal surfaces.
Conditions for the existence of closed geodesics is a classic, much-studied subject in Riemannian geometry, with many beautiful results and powerful techniques. However, many of the techniques that work so well in that context are far less effective in Lorentzian geometry. In revisiting this problem here, we introduce the notion of timelike geodesic homotopy, a restriction to geodesics of the more standard timelike homotopy (also known as $t$-homotopy) of timelike loops on Lorentzian manifolds. This tool is combined with a local shortening/stretching of length argument to provide a number of n…
Timelike Thomsen surfaces are timelike minimal surfaces that are also affine minimal. In this paper, we make use of both the Lorentz conformal coordinates and the null coordinates, and their respective representation theorems of timelike minimal surfaces, to obtain a complete global classification of these surfaces and to characterize them using a geometric invariant called lightlike curvatures. As a result, we reveal the relationship between timelike Thomsen surfaces, and timelike minimal surfaces with planar curvature lines. As an application, we give a deformation of null curves preserving …
We introduce a new approach to the study of timelike minimal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space through a split-complex representation formula for this kind of surface. As applications, we solve the Björling problem for timelike surfaces and obtain interesting examples and related results. Using the Björling representation, we also obtain characterizations of minimal timelike surfaces of revolution as well as of minimal ruled timelike surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowsi space.
It has been known for some time that there exist $5$ essentially different real forms of the complex affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A_2^{(2)}$ and that one can associate $4$ of these real forms with certain classes of "integrable surfaces", such as minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CP}^2$ and $\mathbb {CH}^2$, as well as definite and indefinite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$. In this paper we consider the class of timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the indefinite complex hyperbolic two-space $\mathbb{CH}^2_1$. We show that this class of surfaces corresponds to the fifth real fo…
In this paper, we will give an Enneper-type representation for spacelike and timelike minimal surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space $L^{3}$, using the complex and the paracomplex analysis (respectively). Then, we exhibit various examples of minimal surfaces in $L^{3}$ constructed via the Enneper representation formula, that it is equivalent to the Weierstrass representation obtained by Kobayashi (for spacelike immersions) and by Konderak (for the timelike ones).
We classify (spacelike or timelike) surfaces of revolution with zero $f$-mean curvature in $\Bbb G^2\times\Bbb R_1,$ the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space $\Bbb R^3_1$ endowed with the Gaussian-Euclidean density $e^{-f(x,y,z)}=\frac 1{2π}e^{-\frac{x^2+y^2}2}.$ It is proved that an $f$-maximal surface of revolution is either a horizontal plane or a spacelike $f$-Catenoid. For the timelike case, a timelike $f$-minimal surface is either a vertical plane containing $z$-axis, the cylinder $x^2+y^2=1,$ or a timelike $f$-Catenoid. Spacelike and timelike $f$-Catenoids are new examples of $f$-minimal surfaces …
The 2-parameter family of certain homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds which includes Minkowski 3-space, de Sitter 3-space, and Minkowski motion group is considered. Each homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifold in the 2-parameter family has a solvable Lie group structure with left invariant metric. A generalized integral representation formula which is the unificaton of representation formulas for minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds is obtained. The normal Gauß map of minimal timelike surfaces in those homogeneous Lorentzian 3-manifolds and its harmonicity are discuss…
This paper studies timelike minimal surfaces in the De Sitter space $\mathbb S^3_1(1) \subset \mathbb R^4_1$ via a complex variable. Using complex analysis and stereographic projection of lightlike vectors we obtain a representation formula. Real and complex special quadrics in $\mathbb CP^3$ are identified with the grassmannians of spacelike and timelike oriented 2-planes of $\mathbb R^4_1$, and the normal frame is written in terms of certain complex valued functions $x$ and $y$, which may be considered holomorphic functions as a special case. Then several results describing the analytic rest…
We show that the height function of Scherk's second surface decomposes into a finite sum of scaled and translated versions of itself, using an Euler Ramanujan identity. A similar result appears in R. Kamien's work on liquid crystals where he shows (using an Euler-Ramanujan identity) that the Scherk's first surface decomposes into a finite sum of scaled and translated versions of itself. We give another finite decomposition of the height function of the Scherk's first surface in terms of translated helicoids and scaled and translated Scherk's first surface. We give some more examples, for insta…
We prove that an isometric immersion of a timelike surface in four-dimensional Minkowski space is equivalent to a normalized spinor field which is a solution of a Dirac equation on the surface. Using the quaternions and the complex numbers, we obtain a spinor representation formula that relates the spinor field and the isometric immersion. Applying the representation formula, we deduce a new spinor representation of a timelike surface in three-dimensional De Sitter space; we give a formula for the Laplacian of the Gauss map of a minimal timelike surface in four-dimensional Minkowski space in t…
We use integrable systems techniques to study the singularities of timelike non-minimal constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. The singularities arise at the boundary of the Birkhoff big cell of the loop group involved. We examine the behaviour of the surfaces at the big cell boundary, generalize the definition of CMC surfaces to include those with finite, generic singularities, and show how to construct surfaces with prescribed singularities by solving a singular geometric Cauchy problem. The solution shows that the generic singularities of the generalized su…
It is shown that timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space can be constructed from a pair of Lorentz holomorphic and Lorentz antiholomorphic null curves in PSL(2,R) via Bryant type representation formulae. These formulae are used to investigate an explicit one-to-one correspondence, the so-called Lawson correspondence, between timelike surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in anti-de Sitter 3-space and timelike minimal surfaces in Minkowski 3-space. The hyperbolic Gauss map of timelike surfaces in anti-de Sitter 3-space, which is a close analogue of the classical…

Given a constant vector field $Z$ in Minkowski space, a timelike surface is said to have a canonical null direction with respect to $Z$ if the projection of $Z$ on the tangent space of the surface gives a lightlike vector field. In this paper we describe these surfaces in the ruled case. For example when the Minkowski space has three dimensions then a surface with a canonical null direction is minimal and flat. On the other hand, we describe several properties in the non ruled case and we partially describe these surfaces in four-dimensional Minkowski space. We give different ways for building…
We show that isothermic surfaces and S-Willmore surfaces are also the solutions to the corresponding Blaschke's problem for both spacelike and timelike surfaces in pseudo-Riemannian space forms. For timelike surfaces both Willmore and isothermic, we obtain a description by minimal surfaces similar to the classical results of Thomsen.
In this work we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a minimal timelike strip in Lorentz-Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^4_1$ containing a given lightlike curve and prescribed normal bundle. We also discuss uniqueness of solutions.
In this paper, we employ the loop group method to study the construction of minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the complex projective plane for which the surface is contractible. We present several new classes of minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{C} P^2$.
In the present paper we consider a special class of Lorentz surfaces in the four-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space with neutral metric which are one-parameter systems of meridians of rotational hypersurfaces with timelike or spacelike axis and call them meridian surfaces. We give the complete classification of minimal and quasi-minimal meridian surfaces. We also classify the meridian surfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature.
We show that a Born-Infeld soliton can be realised either as a spacelike minimal graph or timelike minimal graph over a timelike plane or a combination of both away from singular points. We also obtain some exact solutions of the Born-Infeld equation from already known solutions to the maximal surface equation. Further we present a method to construct a one-parameter family of complex solitons from a given one parameter family of maximal surfaces. Finally, using Ramanujan's Identities and the Weierstrass-Enneper representation of maximal surfaces, we derive further non-trivial identities.
We characterize constant mean curvature surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group by a family of flat connections on the trivial bundle $\D \times \GL$ over a simply connected domain $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane. In particular for minimal surfaces, we give an immersion formula, the so-called Sym-formula, and a generalized Weierstrass type representation via the loop group method.
In this article we consider the motion of relativistic strings in the Minkowski space $\textbf{R}^{1+n}$. Those surfaces are known as a timelike minimal surface, and described by a system with $n$ nonlinear wave equations of Born-Infeld type. By constructing a suitable Nash-Moser iteration scheme, we prove that the $n$-dimensional relativistic strings can admit a more generalized time quasi-periodic motion in $\textbf{R}^{1+n}$. Moreover, those time quasi-periodic solutions are also timelike solutions.
Assuming minimal regularity assumptions on the data, we revisit the classical problem of finding isometric immersions into the Minkowski spacetime for hypersurfaces of a Lorentzian manifold. Our approach encompasses metrics having Sobolev regularity and Riemann curvature defined in the distributional sense, only. It applies to timelike, spacelike, or null hypersurfaces with arbitrary signature that possibly changes from point to point.
