This paper presents conformal invariants for Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than or equal to four whose vanishing is necessary for a Riemannian manifold to be conformally related to an Einstein space. One of the invariants is a modification of the Cotton tensor, the other is a $n$--dimensional version of the Bach tensor. In general both tensors are smooth only on an open and dense subset of $M$, but this subset is invariant under conformal transformations. Moreover, we generalize the main result of "Conformal Einstein Spaces in $N$--Dimensions" published in \emph{Ann. Global Anal. Geom.} {\bf 20}(2) (2001).
We compute the evolution equation of the Cotton and the Bach tensor under the Ricci flow of a Riemannian manifold, with particular attention to the three dimensional case, and we discuss some applications.
We establish the existence of solvable Lie groups of dimension 4 and left-invariant Riemannian metrics with zero Bach tensor which are neither conformally Einstein nor half conformally flat.
Around 2007, A. Chang, J. Qing, and P. Yang proved a conformal gap theorem for Bach-flat metrics with round sphere as the model case. In this article, we extend this result to prove conformally invariant gap theorems for Bach-flat $4$-manifolds with $(\mathbb{CP}^2, g_{FS})$ and $(\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2,g_{prod})$ as model cases. An iteration argument plays an important role in the case of $(\mathbb{CP}^2, g_{FS})$ and the convergence theory of Bach-flat metrics is of particular importance in the case of $(\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2,g_{prod})$.
We solve the classifying problem raised by Fischer and Marsden for Bach flat static spaces. We also prove the conjecture about critical point equations proposed by Besse for Bach flat manifolds. Particularly in dimension 3, we derive an integral identity that allows us to obtain conformal flatness from the vanish of the full divergence of the Cotton tensor for static metrics and metrics satisfying the critical point equation.
In this paper we show that a complete Schouten soliton whose Ricci tensor has at most two eigenvalues at each point is rigid. This allows the classification of both shrinking and expanding Bach-flat Schouten solitons for $n\geq$ 4. When $n=3$ we are able to conclude rigidity under a more general condition, namely when the Bach tensor is divergence free. These results imply rigidity of locally conformally flat Schouten solitons for $n\geq3$.
The Bach flow is a fourth order geometric flow defined on four manifolds. For a compact manifold, it is a conformally modified gradient flow for the $L^2$-norm of the Weyl curvature. In this paper we study the Bach flow on four-dimensional simply connected nilmanifolds whose Lie algebra is indecomposable. We show that the Bach flow beginning at an arbitrary left invariant metric exists for all positive times and after rescaling converges in the pointed Cheeger-Gromov sense to an expanding Bach soliton which is non-gradient. Combining our results with previous results of Helliwell gives a compl…
On an $n$-dimensional complete manifold $M$, consider an $h$-almost gradient Ricci soliton, which is a generalization of a gradient Ricci soliton. We prove that if the manifold is Bach-flat and $dh/du>0$, then the manifold $M$ is either Einstein or rigid. In particular, such a manifold has harmonic Weyl curvature. Moreover, if the dimension of $M$ is four, the metric $g$ is conformally flat.
We describe all Lorentzian semi-direct extensions of the Heisenberg group which are conformally Einstein. As a by side result, Bach-flat left-invariant Lorentzian metrics on semi-direct extensions of the Heisenberg group are classified, thus providing new background solutions in conformal gravity.
Using the conformally invariant Cotton tensor, we define a geometric flow, the "Cotton flow", which is exclusive to three dimensions. This flow tends to evolve the initial metrics into conformally flat ones, and is somewhat orthogonal to the Yamabe flow, the latter being a flow within a conformal class. We define an entropy functional, and study the flow of nine homogeneous spaces both numerically and analytically. In particular, we show that the arbitrarily deformed homogeneous 3-sphere flows into the round 3-sphere. Two of the nine homogeneous geometries, which are degenerated by the Ricci f…
A necessary and sufficient condition for the leaves of a {\em non-degenerate} foliation of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold to be conformally flat is developed. The condition mimics the classical condition of the vanishing of the Weyl or Cotton tensor establishing the conformal flatness of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold in the sense that it is also formulated in terms of the vanishing of certain tensors. These tensors play the role of the Weyl or the Cotton tensors and they are defined in terms of the the curvature of a linear torsion-free connection (the {\em bi-conformal connection}).
In this paper, we study a coupled system of equations on oriented compact 4-manifolds which we call the Bach-Merkulov equations. These equations can be thought of as the conformally invariant version of the classical Einstein-Maxwell equations in general relativity. Inspired by the work of C. LeBrun on Einstein-Maxwell equations on compact Kaehler surfaces, we give a variational characterization of solutions to Bach-Merkulov equations as critical points of the Weyl functional. We also show that extremal Kaehler metrics are solutions to these equations, although, contrary to the Einstein-Maxwel…
First, we show that a warped product of a line and a fiber manifold is weakly conformally flat and quasi Einstein if and only if the fiber is Einstein. Next, we characterize and classify contact (in particular, $K$-contact) Riemannian manifold satisfying weakly (and doubly weakly) conformally flat and quasi-Einstein ($η$-Einstein) conditions. Finally, we provide local classification and characterization of a semi-Riemannian (including the 4-dimensional spacetime) with harmonic Weyl tensor and a non-homothetic conformal (including closed) vector field, in terms of Petrov types and Bach tensor.
In the article we consider Bach-flat metrics on four-manifolds with boundary, with conformally invariant boundary conditions. We show that such metrics arise naturally as critical points of the Weyl energy under a constraint. We then prove a rigidity result: if a Yamabe metric associated to a critical metric when restricted to the boundary is isometric to the round three-sphere, then the critical metric must be isometric to the standard upper hemisphere.
We investigate the structure of conformal $C$-spaces,a class of Riemmanian manifolds which naturally arises as aconformal generalisation of the Einstein condition. A basic question is when such a structure is closed, or equivalently locally conformally Cotton. In dimension 4 we obtain a full answer to this question and also investigate the incidence of the Bach condition on this class of metrics. This is related to earlier results obtained in the Einstein-Weyl context.
We study transverse-tracefree (TT)-tensors on conformally flat 3-manifolds $(M,g)$. The Cotton-York tensor linearized at $g$ maps every symmetric tracefree tensor into one which is TT. The question as to whether this is the general solution to the TT-condition is viewed as a cohomological problem within an elliptic complex first found by Gasqui and Goldschmidt and reviewed in the present paper. The question is answered affirmatively when $M$ is simply connected and has vanishing 2nd de Rham cohomology.
We provide an explicit formula for the Fefferman-Graham-ambient metric of an $n$-dimensional conformal $pp$-wave in those cases where it exists. In even dimensions we calculate the obstruction explicitly. Furthermore, we describe all 4-dimensional $pp$-waves that are Bach-flat, and give a large class of Bach-flat examples which are conformally Cotton-flat, but not conformally Einstein. Finally, as an application, we use the obtained ambient metric to show that even-dimensional $pp$-waves have vanishing critical $Q$-curvature.
The aim of this paper is to introduce and justify a possible generalization of the classic Bach field equations on a four dimensional smooth manifold $M$ in presence of field $φ$, that in this context is given by a smooth map with source $M$ and target another Riemannian manifold. Those equations are characterized by the vanishing of a two times covariant, symmetric, traceless and conformally invariant tensor field, called $φ$-Bach tensor, that in absence of the field $φ$ reduces to the classic Bach tensor. We provide a variational characterization for $φ$-Bach flat manifolds and we do the sam…
It has been observed by Maldacena that one can extract asymptotically anti-de Sitter Einstein $4$-metrics from Bach-flat spacetimes by imposing simple principles and data choices. We cast this problem in a conformally compact Riemannian setting. Following an approach pioneered by Fefferman and Graham for the Einstein equation, we find formal power series for conformally compactifiable, asymptotically hyperbolic Bach-flat 4-metrics expanded about conformal infinity. We also consider Bach-flat metrics in the special case of constant scalar curvature and in the special case of constant $Q$-curvat…
In this article we introduce local gauge conditions under which many curvature tensors appearing in conformal geometry, such as the Weyl, Cotton, Bach, and Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensors, become elliptic operators. The gauge conditions amount to fixing an $n$-harmonic coordinate system and normalizing the determinant of the metric. We also give corresponding elliptic regularity results and characterizations of local conformal flatness in low regularity settings.
We construct infinite families of non-simply connected locally conformally flat (LCF) 4-manifolds realizing rich topological types. These manifolds have strictly negative scalar curvature and the underlying topological 4-manifolds do not admit any Einstein metrics. Such 4-manifolds are of particular interest as examples of Bach-flat but non-Einstein spaces in the non-simply connected case. Besides that the underlying smooth manifolds are examples of spaces that admit open book decomposition in dimension 4.
We define pure radiation metrics with parallel rays to be n-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian metrics that admit a parallel null line bundle K and whose Ricci tensor vanishes on vectors that are orthogonal to K. We give necessary conditions in terms of the Weyl, Cotton and Bach tensors for a pseudo-Riemannian metric to be conformal to a pure radiation metric with parallel rays. Then we derive conditions in terms of tractor calculus that are equivalent to the existence of a pure radiation metric with parallel rays in a conformal class. We also give an analogous result for n-dimensional pseudo-Riema…
We study conformal harmonic coordinates on Riemannian manifolds. These are coordinates constructed as quotients of solutions to the conformal Laplace equation. We show their existence under general conditions. We find that conformal harmonic coordinates are a close conformal analogue of harmonic coordinates. We prove up to boundary regularity results for conformal mappings. We show that Weyl, Cotton, Bach, and Fefferman-Graham obstruction tensors become elliptic operators in conformal harmonic coordinates if one normalizes the determinant of the metric. We give a corresponding elliptic regular…
This work proves certain general orbifold compactness results for spaces of Riemannian metrics, generalizing earlier results along these lines for Einstein metrics or metrics with bounded Ricci curvature. This is then applied to prove such compactness for spaces of Bach-flat (for example half-conformally flat) metrics on 4-manifolds, and related results for metrics which are critical points of other natural Riemannian functionals on the space of metrics.
We provide an explicit resolution of the existence problem for extremal Kaehler metrics on toric 4-orbifolds M with second Betti number b2(M)=2. More precisely we show that M admits such a metric if and only if its rational Delzant polytope (which is a labelled quadrilateral) is K-polystable in the relative, toric sense (as studied by S. Donaldson, E. Legendre, G. Szekelyhidi et al.). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal Kaehler metric is ambitoric, i.e., compatible with a conformally equivalent, oppositely oriented toric Kaehler metric, which turns out to be extremal as well. These results…
We construct polynomial conformal invariants, the vanishing of which is necessary and sufficient for an $n$-dimensional suitably generic (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold to be conformal to an Einstein manifold. We also construct invariants which give necessary and sufficient conditions for a metric to be conformally related to a metric with vanishing Cotton tensor. One set of invariants we derive generalises the set of invariants in dimension four obtained by Kozameh, Newman and Tod. For the conformally Einstein problem, another set of invariants we construct gives necessary and sufficient conditi…
In the Cauchy problem for asymptotically flat vacuum data the solution-jets along the cylinder at space-like infinity develop in general logarithmic singularities at the critical sets at which the cylinder touches future/past null infinity. The tendency of these singularities to spread along the null generators of null infinity obstructs the development of a smooth conformal structure at null infinity. For the solution-jets arising from time reflection symmetric data to extend smoothly to the critical sets it is necessary that the Cotton tensor of the initial three-metric h satisfies a certain…
We study complex 4-manifolds with holomorphic self-dual conformal structures, and we obtain an interpretation of the Weyl tensor of such a manifold as the projective curvature of a field of cones on the ambitwistor space. In particular, its vanishing is implied by the existence of some compact, simply-connected, null-geodesics. We also relate the Cotton-York tensor of an umbilic hypersurface to the Weyl tensor of the ambient. As a consequence, a conformal 3-manifold or a self-dual 4-manifold admitting a rational curve as a null-geodesic is conformally flat. We show that the projective structur…
We define a conformally invariant action S on gauge connections on a closed pseudo-Riemannian manifold M of dimension 6. At leading order this is quadratic in the gauge connection. The Euler-Lagrange equations of S, with respect to variation of the gauge connection, provide a higher-order conformally invariant analogue of the (source-free) Yang-Mills equations. For any gauge connection A on M, we define S(A) by first defining a Lagrangian density associated to A. This is not conformally invariant but has a conformal transformation analogous to a Q-curvature. Integrating this density provides t…
One of the main aims of this article is to give the complete classification of critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$ and with harmonic Weyl tensor, which improves the corresponding classification for complete locally conformally flat case, due to Miao and Tam [18]. In particular, we prove that a critical metric with harmonic Weyl tensor on a simply connected compact manifold with boundary isometric to a standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ must be isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\Bbb{R}^n,$ $\Bbb{H}^n$ and $\…
Starting from the classical notion of an oriented congruence (i.e. a foliation by oriented curves) in $R^3$, we abstract the notion of an oriented congruence structure. This is a 3-dimensional CR manifold $(M,H, J)$ with a preferred splitting of the tangent space $TM=V\oplus H$. We find all local invariants of such structures using Cartan's equivalence method refining Cartan's classification of 3-dimensional CR structures. We use these invariants and perform Fefferman like constructions, to obtain interesting Lorentzian metrics in four dimensions, which include explicit Ricci-flat and Einstein…
We give an explicit local classification of conformally equivalent but oppositely oriented Kaehler metrics on a 4-manifold which are toric with respect to a common 2-torus action. In the generic case, these structures have an intriguing local geometry depending on a quadratic polynomial and two arbitrary functions of one variable, these two functions being explicit degree 4 polynomials when the Kaehler metrics are extremal (in the sense of Calabi). One motivation for and application of this result is an explicit local description of Einstein 4-manifolds which are hermitian with respect to eith…
This is a survey paper of our current research on the theory of partial differential equations in conformal geometry. Our intention is to describe some of our current works in a rather brief and expository fashion. We are not giving a comprehensive survey on the subject and references cited here are not intended to be complete. We introduce a bubble tree structure to study the degeneration of a class of Yamabe metrics on Bach flat manifolds satisfying some global conformal bounds on compact manifolds of dimension 4. As applications, we establish a gap theorem, a finiteness theorem for diffeomo…
Working over a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, for each vector bundle with connection we construct a sequence of three differential operators which is a complex (termed a Yang-Mills detour complex) if and only if the connection satisfies the full Yang-Mills equations. A special case is a complex controlling the deformation theory of Yang-Mills connections. In the case of Riemannian signature the complex is elliptic. If the bundle connection respects a metric on the vector bundle then the complex is formally self-adjoint. In dimension 4 the complex is conformally invariant and generalises, to the f…
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian four-dimensional manifold $(M, g)$ with anti-self-dual Weyl tensor to be locally conformal to a Ricci--flat manifold. These conditions are expressed as the vanishing of scalar and tensor conformal invariants. The invariants obstruct the existence of parallel sections of a certain connection on a complex rank-four vector bundle over $M$. They provide a natural generalisation of the Bach tensor which vanishes identically for anti-self-dual conformal structures. We use the obstructions to demonstrate that LeBrun's anti-self-dual metrics…
