We study complex 4-manifolds with holomorphic self-dual conformal structures, and we obtain an interpretation of the Weyl tensor of such a manifold as the projective curvature of a field of cones on the ambitwistor space. In particular, its vanishing is implied by the existence of some compact, simply-connected, null-geodesics. We also relate the Cotton-York tensor of an umbilic hypersurface to the Weyl tensor of the ambient. As a consequence, a conformal 3-manifold or a self-dual 4-manifold admitting a rational curve as a null-geodesic is conformally flat. We show that the projective structure of the beta-surfaces of a self-dual manifold is flat.
In this paper, we will give a local version of the Hamilton-Ivey type pinching estimate of the gradient shrinking soliton with vanishing Weyl tensor, and then give a complete classification on gradient shrinking solitons with vanishing Weyl tensor.
We prove new lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on compact manifolds whose Weyl tensor or curvature tensor, respectively, is divergence free. In the special case of Einstein manifolds, we obtain estimates depending on the Weyl tensor.
This article examines the coincidence of the projective and conformal Weyl tensors associated to a given connection D. The connection may be a general Weyl connection associated to a conformal class of metrics [g]. The main result for n>3 is that the Weyl tensors coincide iff D is the Levi-Civita connection of an Einstein metric.
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the Schouten-Weyl tensor on the three-dimensional Lie groups with left-invariant Lorenzian metrics. The left-invariant Lorentzian metrics on the three-dimensional Lie groups with squared length zero Schouten-Weyl tensor are studied. Moreover, the three-dimensional metric Lie groups with almost harmonic (i.e. with zero curl and divergence) Schouten-Weyl tensor are investigated. In addition, the question about the harmonicity of contraction of the Schouten-Weyl tensor is considered.
The very definition of an Einstein metric implies that all its geometry is encoded in the Weyl tensor. With this in mind, in this paper we derive higher-order Bochner type formulas for the Weyl tensor on a four dimensional Einstein manifold. In particular, we prove a second Bochner type formula which, formally, extends to the covariant derivative level the classical one for the Weyl tensor obtained by Derdzinski in 1983. As a consequence, we deduce some integral identities involving the Weyl tensor and its derivatives on a compact four dimensional Einstein manifold.
This paper derives new identities for the Weyl tensor on a gradient Ricci soliton, particularly in dimension four. First, we prove a Bochner-Weitzenböck type formula for the norm of the self-dual Weyl tensor and discuss its applications, including connections between geometry and topology. In the second part, we are concerned with the interaction of different components of Riemannian curvature and (gradient and Hessian of) the soliton potential function. The Weyl tensor arises naturally in these investigations. Applications here are rigidity results.
We study the question of integrability of a compatible almost complex structure on a compact symplectic 4-manifold, under various natural assumptions on the curvature of the associated almost Kahler metric.
We prove the vanishing of the first Betti number on compact manifolds admitting a Weyl structure whose Ricci tensor satisfies certain positivity conditions, thus obtaining a Bochner-type vanishing theorem in Weyl geometry. We also study compact Hermitian-Weyl manifolds with non-negative symmetric part of the Ricci tensor of the canonical Weyl connection and show that every such manifold has first Betti number $b_1 =1$ and Hodge numbers $h^{p,0} =0$ for $p>0$, $h^{0,1} =1$, $h^{0,q} =0$ for $q>1$.
The problem of characterizing conformally Einstein manifolds by tensorial conditions has been tackled recently in papers by M. Listing, and in work by A. R. Gover and P. Nurowski. Their results apply to metrics satisfying a "non-degeneracy" condition on the Weyl tensor \W. We investigate the geometry of the foliations arising on conformally Einstein spaces (with Riemannian signature) where this condition fails, which then allows us to characterize a general class of locally conformally Einstein Riemannian manifolds with degenerate Weyl tensor.
In this paper, we study vacuum static spaces with the complete divergence of the Bach tensor and Weyl tensor. First, we prove that the vanishing of complete divergence of the Bach tensor and Weyl tensor implies the harmonicity of the metric, and we present examples in which these conditions do not imply Bach flatness. As an application, we prove the non-existence of multiple black holes in vacuum static spaces with zero scalar curvature. On the other hand, we prove the Besse conjecture under these conditions, which are weaker than harmonicity or Bach flatness. Moreover, we show a rigidity resu…
Given the Riemann, or the Weyl, or a generalized curvature tensor K, a symmetric tensor $b_{ij}$ is named `compatible' with the curvature tensor if $b_i{}^m K_{jklm} + b_j{}^m K_{kilm} + b_k{}^m K_{ijlm} = 0$. Amongst showing known and new properties, we prove that they form a special Jordan algebra, i.e. the symmetrized product of K-compatible tensors is K-compatible.
In the presented paper left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metrics on four-dimensional Lie groups with zero Schouten-Weyl tensor are investigated. The complete classification of these metric Lie groups is obtained in terms of the structure constants of corresponding Lie algebras.
We prove that a $4$-dimensional simply connected, compact critical metric of the volume functional with harmonic anti-self dual Weyl tensor and boundary isometric to a standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ is isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, $\mathbb{H}^{4}$ or $\mathbb{S}^{4}.$
The aim of this paper is to study complete (noncompact) steady $m$-quasi-Einstein manifolds satisfying a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor. In this case, we are able to prove that a steady $m$-quasi-Einstein manifold ($m>1$) on a simply connected $n$-dimensional manifold $(M^{n},g)$, $(n\geq4),$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and zero radial Weyl curvature must be a warped product with $(n-1)-$dimensional Einstein fiber, provided that $M$ has fourth order divergence-free Weyl tensor (i.e., ${\rm div}^{4}W=0$).
In this paper we consider an Einstein-type equation which generalizes important geometric equations, like static and critical point equations. We prove that a complete Einstein-type manifold with fourth-order divergence-free Weyl tensor and zero radial Weyl curvature is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional Einstein fibers, provided that the potential function is proper. As a consequence, we prove a result about the nonexistence of multiple black holes in static spacetimes.
In this paper we introduce the notion of generalized quasi--Einstein manifold, that generalizes the concepts of Ricci soliton, Ricci almost soliton and quasi--Einstein manifolds. We prove that a complete generalized quasi--Einstein manifold with harmonic Weyl tensor and with zero radial Weyl curvature, is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$--dimensional Einstein fibers. In particular, this implies a local characterization for locally conformally flat gradient Ricci almost solitons, similar to that proved for gradient Ricci solitons.
We establish a $C^{1,α}$ compactness theorem for the metrics with bounded self - dual Weyl tensor and Scalar curvature. The key step is to estimate the $C^{1,α}$ harmonic radius, where we use the blow up analysis as in \cite{Anderson90}. The result is motivated by, and may be applied to the Calabi flow on complex surfaces \cite{Calabi82}.
We prove that simply connected Einstein four-manifolds of positive scalar curvature are conformally Kähler if and only if the determinant of the self-dual Weyl curvature is positive.
In this paper, we prove rigidity results on gradient shrinking Ricci solitons with weakly harmonic Weyl curvature tensors. Let $(M^n, g)$ be a compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton satisfying ${\rm Ric}_g + Ddf = ρg$ with $ρ>0$ constant. We show that if $(M,g)$ satisfies $δ\mathcal W (\cdot, \cdot, \nabla f) = 0$, then $(M, g)$ is Einstein. Here $\mathcal W$ denotes the Weyl curvature tensor. In the case of noncompact, if $M$ is complete and satisfies the same condition, then $M$ is rigid in the sense that $M$ is given by a quotient of product of an Einstein manifold with Euclidean space. T…
A Riemannian manifold is called Weyl homogeneous, if its Weyl tensors at any two points are "the same", up to a positive multiple. A Weyl homogeneous manifold is modeled on a homogeneous space $M_0$, if its Weyl tensor at every point is "the same" as the Weyl tensor of $M_0$, up to a positive multiple. We prove that a Weyl homogeneous manifold $M^n, n \ge 4$, modeled on an irreducible symmetric space $M_0$ of types II or IV (compact simple Lie group with a bi-invariant metric or its noncompact dual) is conformally equivalent to $M_0$.
We determine the space of algebraic pseudo-Hermitian Kähler-Weyl curvature tensors and the space of para-Hermitian Kähler-Weyl curvature tensors in dimension 4 and show that every algebraic possibility is geometrically realizable. We establish the Gray identity for pseudo-Hermitian Weyl manifolds and for para-Hermitian Weyl manifolds in arbitrary dimension.
Compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds that have parallel Weyl tensor without being conformally flat or locally symmetric are known to exist in infinitely many dimensions greater than 4. We prove some general topological properties of such manifolds, namely, vanishing of the Euler characteristic and real Pontryagin classes, and infiniteness of the fundamental group. We also show that, in the Lorentzian case, each of them is at least 5-dimensional and admits a two-fold cover which is a bundle over the circle.
We investigate the triviality of compact Ricci solitons under general scalar conditions involving the Weyl tensor. More precisely, we show that a compact Ricci soliton is Einstein if a generic linear combination of divergences of the Weyl tensor contracted with suitable covariant derivatives of the potential function vanishes. In particular we recover and improve all known related results. This paper can be thought as a first, preliminary step in a general program which aims at showing that Ricci solitons can be classified finding a "generic" $[k, s]$-vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor, fo…
A Riemannian manifold is called Osserman (conformally Osserman, respectively), if the eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator of its curvature tensor (Weyl tensor, respectively) are constant on the unit tangent sphere at every point. Osserman Conjecture asserts that every Osserman manifold is either flat or rank-one symmetric. We prove that both the Osserman Conjecture and its conformal version, the Conformal Osserman Conjecture, are true, modulo a certain assumption on algebraic curvature tensors in $\mathbb{R}^16$. As a consequence, we show that a Riemannian manifold having the same Weyl tensor a…
One of the main aims of this article is to give the complete classification of critical metrics of the volume functional on a compact manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$ and with harmonic Weyl tensor, which improves the corresponding classification for complete locally conformally flat case, due to Miao and Tam [18]. In particular, we prove that a critical metric with harmonic Weyl tensor on a simply connected compact manifold with boundary isometric to a standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ must be isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\Bbb{R}^n,$ $\Bbb{H}^n$ and $\…
It is shown that in every dimension n=3j+2, j=1,2,3,..., there exist compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are Ricci-recurrent, but neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and represent all indefinite metric signatures. The manifolds in question are diffeomorphic to nontrivial torus bundles over the circle. They all arise from a construction that a priori yields bundles over the circle, having as the fibre either a torus, or a 2-step nilmanifold with a complete flat torsionfree connection; our argument only realizes the torus case.
We work in both the complex and in the para-complex categories and examine (para)-Kähler Weyl structures in both the geometric and in the algebraic settings. The higher dimensional setting is quite restrictive. We show that any (para)-Kaehler Weyl algebraic curvature tensor is in fact Riemannian in dimension at least 6; this yields as a geometric consequence that any (para)-Kaehler Weyl geometric structure is trivial if the dimension is at least 6. By contrast, the 4 dimensional setting is, as always, rather special as it turns out that there are (para)-Kaehler Weyl algebraic curvature tensors…
Let N be a symmetric space of dimension n > 5 whose de Rham decomposition contains no factors of constant curvature and let W be the Weyl tensor of N at some point. We prove that a Riemannian manifold whose Weyl tensor at every point is a positive multiple of W is conformally equivalent to N (the case N = R^n is the Weyl-Schouten Theorem).
This is an exposition of some recent results on ECS manifolds, by which we mean pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of dimensions greater than 3 that are neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and have parallel Weyl tensor. All ECS metrics are indefinite. We state two classification theorems, describing the local structure of ECS manifolds, and outline an argument showing that compact ECS manifolds exist in infinitely many dimensions greater than 4. We also discuss some properties of compact manifolds that admit ECS metrics, and provide a list of open questions about compact ECS manifolds.
We apply the theory of Weyl structures for parabolic geometries developed by A. Cap and J. Slovak in to compute, for a quaternionic contact (qc) structure, the Weyl connection associated to a choice of scale, i.e. to a choice of Carnot-Carathéodory metric in the conformal class. The result of this computation has applications to the study of the conformal Fefferman space of a qc manifold. In addition to this application, we are also able to easily compute a tensorial formula for the qc analog of the Weyl curvature tensor in conformal geometry and the Chern-Moser tensor in CR geometry. This ten…
We define a Weyl-type curvature tensor that provides a characterisation for Finsler metrics of constant flag curvature. When the Finsler metric reduces to a Riemannian metric, the Weyl-type curvature tensor reduces to the classic projective Weyl tensor. In the general case, the Weyl-type curvature tensor differs from the Weyl projective curvature, it is not a projective invariant, and hence Beltrami Theorem does not work in Finsler geometry. We provide the relation between the Weyl-type curvature tensors of two projectively related Finsler metrics. Using this formula we show that a projective …
We compute the full holonomy group of compact Lorentzian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, for the case where the fundamental group is contained in a distinguished subgroup G of the isometry group of the universal cover. To prove this, we show that every such compact Lorentzian manifold has to be geodesically complete. Moreover we characterize the identity component of the isometry group for this universal cover and show that G is up to a discrete factor contained in the latter. Concretely, we prove that the identity component of the…
In this paper we study the minimal norm tensors for general third covariant tensors and fourth covariant tensors, using this we can give a new explanation of Weyl tensor and Cotten tensor: Weyl tensor is the minimal norm tensor of Riemannian curvature tensor and Cotten tensor is the minimal norm tensor of divergence of Riemannian curvature tensor, and we also get some useful inequalities by computation the norm of minimal norm tensors.
We compute the evolution equation of the Weyl tensor under the Ricci flow of a Riemannian manifold and we discuss some consequences for the classification of locally conformally flat Ricci solitons.
We classify complete gradient Ricci solitons satisfying a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor, improving previously known results. More precisely, we show that any $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 4$) gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with fourth order divergence-free Weyl tensor is either Einstein, or a finite quotient of $N^{n-k}\times \mathbb{R}^k$, $(k > 0)$, the product of a Einstein manifold $N^{n-k}$ with the Gaussian shrinking soliton $\mathbb{R}^k$. The technique applies also to the steady and expanding cases in all dimensions. In particular, we prove that a three dimensional gr…
We study when the Jacobi operator associated to the Weyl conformal curvature tensor has constant eigenvalues on the bundle of unit spacelike or timelike tangent vectors. This leads to questions in the conformal geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which generalize the Osserman conjecture to this setting. We also study similar questions related to the skew-symmetric curvature operator defined by the Weyl conformal curvature tensor.
In all dimensions and arbitrary signature, we demonstrate the existence of a new local potential -- a double (2,3)-form -- for the Weyl curvature tensor, and more generally for all tensors with the symmetry properties of the Weyl curvature tensor. The classical four-dimensional Lanczos potential for a Weyl tensor -- a double (2,1)-form -- is proven to be a particular case of the new potential: its double dual.
We establish the submaximal symmetry dimension for Riemannian and Lorentzian conformal structures. The proof is based on enumerating all subalgebras of orthogonal Lie algebras of sufficiently large dimension and verifying if they stabilize a non-zero Weyl tensor up to scale. Our main technical tools include Dynkin's classification of maximal subalgebras in complex simple Lie algebras, a theorem of Mostow, and Kostant's Bott-Borel-Weil theorem.
It is well known that the classification of the Weyl tensor in Lorentzian manifolds of dimension four, the so called Petrov classification, was a great tool to the development of general relativity. Using the bivector approach it is shown in this article a classification for the Weyl tensor in all four-dimensional manifolds, including all signatures and the complex case, in an unified and simple way. The important Petrov classification then emerges just as a particular case in this scheme. The boost weight classification is also extended here to all signatures as well to complex manifolds. For…
We prove that, in a space-time of dimension n>3 with a velocity field that is shear-free, vorticity-free and acceleration-free, the covariant divergence of the Weyl tensor is zero if the contraction of the Weyl tensor with the velocity is zero. The other way, if the covariant divergence of the Weyl tensor is zero, then the contraction of the Weyl tensor with the velocity has recurrent geodesic derivative. This partly extends a property found in Generalised Robertson-Walker spacetimes, where the velocity is also eigenvector of the Ricci tensor. Despite the simplicity of the statement, the proof…
We prove theorems about the Ricci and the Weyl tensors on generalized Robertson-Walker space-times of dimension $n\ge 3$. In particular, we show that the concircular vector introduced by Chen decomposes the Ricci tensor as a perfect fluid term plus a term linear in the contracted Weyl tensor. The Weyl tensor is harmonic if and only if it is annihilated by Chen's vector, and any of the two conditions is necessary and sufficient for the GRW space-time to be a quasi-Einstein (perfect fluid) manifold. Finally, the general structure of the Riemann tensor for Robertson-Walker space-times is given, i…
A spinorial approach to 6-dimensional differential geometry is constructed and used to analyze tensor fields of low rank, with special attention to the Weyl tensor. We perform a study similar to the 4-dimensional case, making full use of the SO(6) symmetry to uncover results not easily seen in the tensorial approach. Using spinors, we propose a classification of the Weyl tensor by reinterpreting it as a map from 3-vectors to 3-vectors. This classification is shown to be intimately related to the integrability of maximally isotropic subspaces, establishing a natural framework to generalize the …
Conformally recurrent pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of dimension n>4 are investigated. The Weyl tensor is represented as a Kulkarni-Nomizu product. If the square of the Weyl tensor is nonzero, a covariantly constant symmetric tensor is constructed, that is quadratic in the Weyl tensor. Then, by Grycak's theorem, the explicit expression of the traceless part of the Ricci tensor is obtained, up to a scalar function. The Ricci tensor has at most two distinct eigenvalues, and the recurrence vector is an eigenvector. Lorentzian conformally recurrent manifolds are then considered. If the square of the…
The goal of this paper is to investigate the rigidity of 4-dimensional manifolds involving some pinching curvature conditions. To this end, we make use of the approach of biorthogonal curvature which is weaker than the sectional curvature. Here, we prove a rigidity result for 4-dimensional compact manifolds under a suitable lower bound condition on the minimum of the biorthogonal curvature. From this, we improve the pinching constants considered by some preceding works on a rigidity result for 4-dimensional manifolds.
On four-dimensional closed manifolds we introduce a class of canonical Riemannian metrics, that we call weak harmonic Weyl metrics, defined as critical points in the conformal class of a quadratic functional involving the norm of the divergence of the Weyl tensor. This class includes Einstein and, more in general, harmonic Weyl manifolds. We prove that every closed four-manifold admits a weak harmonic Weyl metric, which is the unique (up to dilations) minimizer of the functional in a suitable conformal class. In general the problem is degenerate elliptic due to possible vanishing of the Weyl t…
Stationary and axially symmetric space-times play an important role in astrophysics, particularly in the theory of neutron stars and black holes. The static vacuum sub-class of these space-times is known as Weyl's class, and contains the Schwarzschild space-time as its most prominent example. This paper is going to study the space of Killing tensor fields of valence 3 for space-times of Weyl's class. Killing tensor fields play a crucial role in physics since they are in correspondence to invariants of the geodesic motion (i.e. constants of the motion). It will be proven that in static and axia…
In this paper the Weyl tensor is used to define operators that act on the space of forms. These operators are shown to have interesting properties and are used to classify the Weyl tensor, the well known Petrov classification emerging as a special case. Particularly, in the Euclidean signature this classification turns out be really simple. Then it is shown that the integrability condition of maximally isotropic distributions can be described in terms of the invariance of certain subbundles under the action of these operators. Here it is also proved a new generalization of the Goldberg-Sachs t…
The equations governing anti-self-dual and Einstein-Weyl conformal geometries can be regarded as `master dispersionless systems' in four and three dimensions respectively. Their integrability by twistor methods has been established by Penrose and Hitchin. In this note we present, in specially adapted coordinate systems, explicit forms of the corresponding equations and their Lax pairs. In particular, we demonstrate that any Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure is locally given by a solution to the Manakov-Santini system, and we find a system of two coupled third-order scalar PDEs for a general a…
The purpose of this paper is to revisit the Bianchi identities existing for the Riemann and Weyl tensors in the combined framework of the formal theory of systems of partial differential equations (Spencer cohomology, differential systems, formal integrability) and Algebraic Analysis (homological algebra, differential modules, duality). In particular, we prove that the n 2 (n 2 -- 1)(n -- 2)/24 generating Bianchi identities for the Riemann tensor are first order and can be easily described by means of the Spencer cohomology of the first order Killing symbol in arbitrary dimension n $\ge$ 2. Si…
