Let N_g(d) be the set of primes p such that the order of g modulo p is divisible by a prescribed integer d. Wiertelak showed that this set has a natural density and gave a rather involved explicit expression for it.
Let N_g(d)(x) be the number of primes p<=x that are in N_g(d). A simple identity for N_g(d)(x) is established. It is used to derive a more compact expression for the natural density than known hitherto. A numerical demonstration, using a program of Y. Gallot, is presented.
Directed acyclic graphs whose nodes are all the divisors of a positive integer $n$ and arcs $(a,b)$ defined by $a$ divides $b$ are considered. Fourteen graph invariants such as order, size, and the number of paths are investigated for two classic graphs, the Hasse diagram $G^H(n)$ and its transitive closure $G^T(n)$ derived from the divides relation partial order. Concise formulae and algorithms are devised for these graph invariants and several important properties of these graphs are formally proven. Integer sequences of these invariants in natural order by $n$ are computed and several new s…
Let b be an odd integer such that b=+/-1 (mod 8) and let q be a prime with primitive root 2 such that q does not divide b. We show that if (p(k)) is a sequence of odd primes, with 0<=k<=q-2 such that p(k)=2p(k-1)+b for all 1<=k<=q-2, then either (a) q divides p(0)+b, (b) p_0=q or (c) p_1=q.
For integer a let us consider the sequence X_a={x_0,x_1,x_2,...} defined by x_0=a, x_1=1 and, for n>=1, x_{n+1}=x_n+x_{n-1}. We say that a prime p divides X_a if p divides at least one term of the sequence. It is easy to see that every prime p divides X_1, the sequence of Fibonacci numbers. Lagarias, using a technique involving the computation of degrees of various Kummerian extensions first employed by Hasse, showed in 1985 that X_2, the set of primes dividing some Lucas number has natural density 2/3 and posed as a challenge finding the density of prime divisors of X_3. In this paper we reso…
A prime $p$ is a Wolstenholme prime if $\binom{2p}{p}\equiv2$ mod $p^4$, or, equivalently, if $p$ divides the numerator of the Bernoulli number $B_{p-3}$; a Vandiver prime $p$ is one that divides the Euler number $E_{p-3}$. Only two Wolstenholme primes and eight Vandiver primes are known. We increase the search range in the first case by a factor of $10$, and show that no additional Wolstenholme primes exist up to $10^{11}$, and in the second case by a factor of $20$, proving that no additional Vandiver primes occur up to this same bound. To facilitate this, we develop a number of new congruen…
We show that, modulo some odd prime p, the powers of two weighted sum of the first p-2 divided Bernoulli numbers equals the Agoh-Giuga quotient plus twice the number of permutations on p-2 letters with an even number of ascents and distinct from the identity. We provide a combinatorial characterization of Wieferich primes, as well as of primes p for which p^2 divides the Fermat quotient q_p(2).
We compute modular forms known to arise from the order 5 generators of the 5-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence 2-line, generalizing and contextualizing previous computations of M. Behrens and G. Laures. We exhibit analogous computations at other primes and conjecture formulas for some of the modular forms arising in this way at arbitrary primes greater than or equal to 5.
For a class of Lucas sequences ${x_n}$, we show that if $n$ is a positive integer then $x_n$ has a primitive prime factor which divides $x_n$ to an odd power, except perhaps when $n = 1, 2, 3 or 6$. This has several desirable consequences.
We present new theoretical algorithms that sums the n-ary comparators output in order to get the permutation indices in order to sort a sequence. By analysing the parallel ranking algorithm, we found that the special comparators number of elements it processes divide the number of elements to be sorted. Using the divide and conquer method, we can express the sorting problem into summing output of comparators taking a prime number of elements, given that this prime number divides the initial disordered sequence length. The number of sums is directly related to the Maundy cake problem. Furthermo…
Let $U = (U_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a Lucas sequence and, for every prime number $p$, let $ρ_U(p)$ be the rank of appearance of $p$ in $U$, that is, the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $p$ divides $U_k$, whenever it exists. Furthermore, let $d$ be an odd positive integer. Under some mild hypotheses, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of primes $p \leq x$ such that $d$ divides $ρ_U(p)$, as $x \to +\infty$.
Let $f\colon\mathbb{N}\rightarrow\mathbb{N}_0$ be a multiplicative arithmetic function such that for all primes $p$ and positive integers $α$, $f(p^α)<p^α$ and $f(p)\vert f(p^α)$. Suppose also that any prime that divides $f(p^α)$ also divides $pf(p)$. Define $f(0)=0$, and let $H(n)=\displaystyle{\lim_{m\rightarrow\infty}f^m(n)}$, where $f^m$ denotes the $m^{th}$ iterate of $f$. We prove that the function $H$ is completely multiplicative.
Let $d \ge 3$ be an integer and let $P \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ whose Galois group is $S_d$. Let $(a_n)$ be a linearly recuresive sequence of integers which has $P$ as its characteristic polynomial. We prove, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, that the lower density of the set of primes which divide at least one element of the sequence $(a_n)$ is positive.
We consider the primes which divide the denominator of the x-coordinate of a sequence of rational points on an elliptic curve. It is expected that for every sufficiently large value of the index, each term should be divisible by a primitive prime divisor, one that has not appeared in any earlier term. Proofs of this are known in only a few cases. Weaker results in the general direction are given, using a strong form of Siegel's Theorem and some congruence arguments. Our main result is applied to the study of prime divisors of Somos sequences.
Let $C_n$ be the $n$th Catalan number. We show that the asymptotic density of the set $\{n: C_n \equiv 0 \mod p \}$ is $1$ for all primes $p$, We also show that if $n = p^k -1$ then $C_n \equiv -1 \mod p$. Finally we show that if $n \equiv \{ \frac{p+1}{2}, \frac{p+3}{2}, ..., p-2 \} \mod p$ then $p$ divides $C_n$. All results are obtained using the automata method of Rowland and Yassawi.
A conjecture of Mordell states that if $p$ is a prime and $p$ is congruent to $3$ mod $4$, then $p$ does not divide $y$ where $(x,y)$ is the fundamental solution to $x^{2}-py^{2}=1$. The conjecture has been verified for primes not exceeding $10^{7}$. In this article, we show that Mordell's conjecture holds for four conjecturally infinite families of primes.
Let f be a newform of weight 2k-2 and level 1. In this paper we provide evidence for the Bloch-Kato conjecture for modular forms. We demonstrate an implication that under suitable hypothesis if a prime divides the algebraic part of L(k,f), then the prime divides the order of the Selmer group associated to f. We demonstrate this by establishing a congruence between the Saito-Kurokawa lift of f and a cuspidal Siegel eigenform that is not a Saito-Kurokawa lift. We then examine what this congruence says in terms of Galois representations to produce a non-trivial p-torsion element in the Selmer gro…
Let phi denote Euler's phi function. For a fixed odd prime we give an asymptotic series expansion in the sense of Poincare for the number E_q(x) of n<=x such that q does not divide phi(n). Thereby we improve on a recent theorem of B.K. Spearman and K.S. Williams [Ark. Mat. 44 (2006), 166-181]. Furthermore we resolve, under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, which of two approximations to E_q(x) is asymptotically superior using recent results of Y. Ihara on the Euler-Kronecker constant of a number field.
Let K be a number field, let f(x) in K(x) be a rational function of degree d> 1, and let z in K be a wandering point such that f^n(z) is nonzero for all n > 0. We prove that if the abc-conjecture holds for K, then for all but finitely many positive integers n, there is a prime p of K such that p | f^n(z) and p does not divide f^m(z) for all positive integers m < n. We prove the same result unconditionally for function fields of characteristic 0 when f is not isotrivial.
Let omega(n) be the number of distinct prime factors dividing n and m > n natural numbers. We calculate a formula showing which prime numbers in which intervals divide a given binomial coefficient. From this formula we get an identity omega(binom(nk)(mk))=sum_i (pi(k/b(i))- pi(k/a(i))) + O(sqrt(k)). Erdoes mentioned that omega(binom(nk)(mk))= log n^n/(m^m (n-m)^(n-m)) k/log k + o(k/log k). As an application of the above identities, we conclude some well-known facts about the distribution of the primes and deduce for all natural numbers k an expression (also well-known) log k = sum_i a_k(i) whi…
Let A,A' be elliptic curves or abelian varieties fully of type GSp defined over a number field K. This includes principally polarized abelian varieties with geometric endomorphism ring Z and dimension 2 or odd. We compare the number of points on the reductions of the two varieties. We prove that A and A' are K-isogenous if the following condition holds for a density-one set of primes p of K: the prime numbers dividing #A(k_p) also divide #A'(k_p). We generalize this statement to some extent for products of such varieties. This refines results of Hall and Perucca (2011) and of Ratazzi (2012).
In this paper we characterize, in terms of the prime divisors of $n$, the pairs $(k,n)$ for which $n$ divides $\sum_{j=1}^n j^{k}$. As an application, we study the sets $\mathcal{M}_f :=\{n: n \textrm{divides} \sum_{j=1}^n j^{f(n)} \}$ for some choices of $f$.
Counting the number of prime numbers up to a certain natural number and describing the asymptotic behavior of such a counting function has been studied by famous mathematicians like Gauss, Legendre, Dirichlet, and Euler. The prime number theorem determines that such asymptotic behavior is similar to the asymptotic behavior of the number divided by its natural logarithm. In this paper, we take advantage of a multiplicative representation of a number and the properties of the logarithm function to express the prime number theorem in terms of primorial numbers, and n-primorial totative numbers. A…
Let~$A$ be a quotient of $J_0(N)$ associated to a newform $f$ such that the special $L$-value of $A$ (at $s=1$) is non-zero. We give a formula for the ratio of the special $L$-value to the real period of $A$ that expresses this ratio as a rational number. We extract an integer factor from the numerator of this formula; this factor is non-trivial in general and is related to certain congruences of $f$ with eigenforms of positive analytic rank. We use the techniques of visibility to show that, under certain hypotheses (which includes the first part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture on …
E26 in the Enestrom index. Translated from the Latin original, "Observationes de theoremate quodam Fermatiano aliisque ad numeros primos spectantibus" (1732). In this paper Euler gives a counterexample to Fermat's claim that all numbers of the form 2^{2^m}+1 are primes, by showing 2^{2^5}+1=4294967297 is divisible by 641. He also considers many cases in which we are guaranteed that a number is composite, but he notes clearly that it is not possible to have a full list of circumstances under which a number is composite. He then gives a theorem and several corollaries of it, but he says that he …
For Lucas sequences of the first kind (u_n) and second kind (v_n) defined as usual for positive n by u_n=(a^n-b^n)/(a-b), v_n=a^n+b^n, where a and b are either integers or conjugate quadratic integers, we describe the set of indices n for which n divides u_n and also the set of indices n for which n divides v_n. Building on earlier work, particularly that of Somer, we show that the numbers in these sets can be written as a product of a so-called basic number, which can only be 1, 6 or 12, and particular primes, which are described explicitly. Some properties of the set of all primes that arise…
We explore two questions about pseudo-polynomials, which are functions $f:\mathbb N \to \mathbb Z$ such that $k$ divides $f(n+k) - f(n)$ for all $n,k$. First, for certain arbitrarily sparse sets $R$, we construct pseudo-polynomials $f$ with $p|f(n)$ for some $n$ only if $p \in R$. This implies that not all pseudo-polynomials satisfy an assumption of a recent paper of Kowalski and Soundararajan. We also consider $α$-primary pseudo-polynomials, where the pseudo-polynomial condition is only required for $k$ lying in a set of primes of density $α$. We show that if an $α$-primary pseudo-polynomial …
Picking binomial coefficients which cannot be divided by a given prime from Pascal's triangle, we find that they form a set with self-similarity. Essouabri studied on a class of meromorphic functions associated to the above set. These functions are related to fractal geometry and it is a problem whether such a function has a non-real pole on its axis of absolute convergence. Essouabri gave a proof of existence of such a non-real pole in the simplest case. The keys of his proof are Stein's and Wilson's estimates on how fast the points multiply in Pascal's triangle modulo a prime. This article w…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $K=\mathbb{Q}(ε)$ where $ε$ is a primitive cubic root of unity, and let $L$ be the Kummer field $\mathbb{Q}\left(ε, \sqrt[3]α\right)$. In this paper we obtain a characterization of the splitting behavior of the symbol algebras $\left( \frac{α,p}{K,ε}\right)$ and $\left( \frac{α,p^{h_{p}}}{K,ε}\right)$, where $h_{p}$ is the order in the class group $Cl\left(L\right)$ of a prime ideal of $\mathcal{O}_L$ which divides $p\mathcal{O}_L.$
Let $A$ be an elliptic curve over $\Q$ of square free conductor $N$. We prove that if $A$ has a rational torsion point of prime order $r$ such that $r$ does not divide $6N$, then $r$ divides the order of the cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$.
For finitely generated subgroups $W_1, \ldots , W_t$ of $\mathbb{Q}^{\times}$, integers $k_1, \ldots , k_t$, a Galois extension $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ and a union of conjugacy classes $C \subset \text{Gal}(F/\mathbb{Q})$, we develop methods for determining if there exists infinitely many primes $p$ such that the index of the reduction of $W_i$ modulo $p$ divides $k_i$ and such that the Artin symbol of $p$ on $F$ is contained in $C$. The results are a multivariable generalization of H.W. Lenstra's work. As an application, we determine all integers $a_1, \ldots , a_n$ such that $\text{ord}_p(a_1) =…
Let K/Q be a cyclic extension. In this paper, we give several congruences connecting the prime divisors of the degree g= [K:Q] with the prime divisors of the class number h of K/Q. As an exemple, the theorem: Let K/Q be a cyclic extension with [K:Q]=g. Suppose that g is not divisible by 2 . Let g_j, j=1,...m, be the prime divisors of g. Let h_i, i=1,...r, be the prime divisors of the class number h of K/Q. If for one prime factor h_i of h, the h_i-component G(h_i) of the class group G of K/Q is cyclic then: else h_i divides g, else h_i = 1 (mod g_j) for at least one prime divisor g_j of g. The…
Let $X$ be a set of positive integers, and let $\mathbb Z_K$ be the ring of integers of a number field $K$ of degree $n$. Denote by $N(I)$ the absolute norm of an ideal $I$ of $\mathbb Z_K$, and by $\mathcal A$ the set of principal ideals $a\mathbb Z_K$ such that $a$ is an atom of $\mathbb Z_K$ and $a$ divides $m$ for some $m \in X$. Building upon the ideas of Clarkson from [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 17 (1966), 541], we show that, if the series $\sum_{m \in X} 1/m$ diverges, then so does the series $\sum_{\mathfrak a \in \mathcal A} |N(\mathfrak a)|^{-1/n}$. Most notably, this generalizes a class…
Let $K = \Q(θ)$ be an algebraic number field with $θ$ satisfying an irreducible polynomial $x^{9} - a$ over the field $\Q$ of rationals and $\Z_K$ denote the ring of algebraic integers of $K$. In this article, we provide the exact power of each prime which divides the index of the subgroup $\Z[θ]$ in $\Z_K$. Further, we give a $p$-integral basis of $K$ for each prime $p$. These $p$-integral bases lead to a construction of an integral basis of $K$ which is illustrated with examples.
Let $π(n)$ denote the prime-counting function and let $$f(n)=\left|\left\lfloor\log n-\lfloor\log n\rfloor-0.1\right\rfloor\right|\left\lfloor\frac{\left\lfloor n/\lfloor\log n-1\rfloor\right\rfloor\lfloor\log n-1\rfloor}{n}\right\rfloor\text{.}$$ In this paper we prove that if $n$ is an integer $\ge 60184$ and $f(n)=0$, then $π(n)$ does not divide $n$. We also show that if $n\ge 60184$ and $π(n)$ divides $n$, then $f(n)=1$. In addition, we prove that if $n\ge 60184$ and $n/π(n)$ is an integer, then $n$ is a multiple of $\lfloor\log n-1\rfloor$ located in the interval $[e^{\lfloor\log n-1\rflo…
Let $p$ and $q$ be two positive primes. Let $\ell$ be an odd positive prime integer and $F$ a quadratic number field. Let $K$ be an extension of $F$ such that $K$ is a dihedral extension of $\Q$ of degree $\ell$ over $F$ or $K$ is an abelian $\ell$-extension unramified over $F$ assuming $\ell$ divides the class number of $F$. In this paper, we obtain a complete characterization of division quaternion algebras $H_{K}(p, q)$ over $K$.
This article deals with a conjecture, introduced in [GQ] (hereinafter $SFLT2$), which generalizes the second case of Fermat's Last Theorem: {\it Let $p>3$ be a prime. The diophantine equation $\frac{u^p+v^p}{u+v}=w_1^p$ with $u,v,u+v, w_1\in\Z\backslash\{0\}$, $u,v$ coprime and $v\equiv 0 \mod p$ has no solution.} Let $ζ$ be a $p$th primitive root of unity and $K:=\Q(ζ)$. A prime $q$ is said {\it $p$-principal} if the class of any prime ideal $\mathfrak q_K$ of $K$ over $q$ is a $p$-power of a class. Assume that $SFLT2$ fails for $(p,u,v)$. Let $q$ be any odd prime coprime with $puv$, $f$ the …
Let $N$ be a positive integer, $\mathbb{A}$ be a subset of $\mathbb{Q}$ and $α=\dfrac{α_{1}}{α_{2}}\in \mathbb{A}\setminus \{0,N\}$. $N$ is called an $α$-Korselt number (equivalently $α$ is said an $N$-Korselt base) if $α_{2}p-α_{1}$ divides $α_{2}N-α_{1}$ for every prime divisor $p$ of $N$. By the Korselt set of $N$ over $\mathbb{A}$, we mean the set $\mathbb{A}$-$\mathcal{KS}(N)$ of all $α\in \mathbb{A}\setminus \{0,N\}$ such that $N$ is an $α$-Korselt number. In this paper we determine explicitly for a given prime number $q$ and an integer $l\in \mathbb{N}\setminus \{0,1\}$, the set $\mathb…
A primitive prime divisor of an element a_n of a sequence (a_1,a_2,a_3,...) is a prime P that divides a_n, but does not divide a_m for all m < n. The Zsigmondy set Z of the sequence is the set of n such that a_n has no primitive prime divisors. Let f : X --> X be a self-morphism of a variety, let D be an effective divisor on X, and let P be a point of X, all defined over the algebraic closure of Q. We consider the Zsigmondy set Z(X,f,P,D) of the sequence defined by the arithmetic intersection of the f-orbit of P with D. Under various assumptions on X, f, D, and P, we use Vojta's conjecture wit…
Kurepa's conjecture states that there is no odd prime $p$ that divides $!p=0!+1!+\cdots+(p-1)!$. We search for a counterexample to this conjecture for all $p<2^{34}$. We introduce new optimization techniques and perform the computation using graphics processing units. Additionally, we consider the generalized Kurepa's left factorial given by $!^{k}n=(0!)^k +(1!)^k +\cdots+((n-1)!)^{k}$, and show that for all integers $1<k<100$ there exists an odd prime $p$ such that $p\mid !^k p$.
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic number field, and $F/k$ a finite abelian extension of Galois group $G$. We show that a Gross conjecture concerning the leading terms of Artin $L$-series holds for $F/k$ and all rational primes which are split in $k$ and which do not divide $6$.
Let $b \geq 2$ be an integer and $S$ be a finite non-empty set of primes not containing divisors of $b$. For any non-dense set $A \subset [0,1)$ such that $A \cap \mathbb{Q}$ is invariant under $\times b$ operation, we prove the finiteness of rational numbers in $A$ whose denominators can only be divided by primes in $S$. A quantitative result on the largest prime divisors of the denominators of rational numbers in $A$ is also obtained.
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of prime conductor $N$. We show that if for an odd prime $p$, the mod $p$ representation associated to $E$ is reducible (in particular, if $p$ divides the order of the torsion subgroup of $E(\Q)$), then the $p$-primary component of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $E$ is trivial. We also state a related result for more general abelian subvarieties of $J_0(N)$ and mention what to expect if $N$ is not prime.
Natural numbers can be divided in two non-overlapping infinite sets, primes and composites, with composites factorizing into primes. Despite their apparent simplicity, the elucidation of the architecture of natural numbers with primes as building blocks remains elusive. Here, we propose a new approach to decoding the architecture of natural numbers based on complex networks and stochastic processes theory. We introduce a parameter-free non-Markovian dynamical model that naturally generates random primes and their relation with composite numbers with remarkable accuracy. Our model satisfies the…
Let E be an elliptic curve and ρan Artin representation, both defined over the rational numbers. Let p be a prime at which E has good reduction. We prove that there exists an infinite set of Dirichlet characters χ, ramified only at p, such that the Artin-twisted L-values L(E,ρχ,β) are non-zero when βlies in a specified region in the critical strip (assuming the conjectural continuations and functional equations for these L-functions). The new contribution of our paper is that we may choose our characters to be ramified only at one prime, which may divide the conductor of ρ.
We characterize the possible reductions of $j$-invariants of elliptic curves which admit complex multiplication by an order $\mathcal{O}$ where the curve itself is defined over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. In particular, we show that the distribution of these $j$-invariants depends on which primes divide the discriminant and conductor of the order.
Let $Tr$ denote the trace $\mathbb{Z}$-module homomorphism defined on the ring $\mathcal{O}_{L} $ of the integers of a number field $L.$ We show that $Tr(\mathcal{O}_{L})\varsubsetneq \mathbb{Z}$ if and only if there is a prime factor $p$ of the degree of $L$ such that if $\wp _{1}^{e_{1}}...\wp _{s}^{e_{s}}$ is the prime factorization of the ideal $p\mathcal{O}_{L}$ in $\mathcal{O}_{L},$ then $p$ divides all powers $e_{1},...,e_{s}.$ Also, we prove that the equality $Tr(\mathcal{O}_{L})=\mathbb{Z}$ holds when $L$ is the compositum of certain number fields.
Let G be the product of an abelian variety and a torus defined over a number field K. Let R be a K-rational point on G of infinite order. Call n_R the number of connected components of the smallest algebraic K-subgroup of G to which R belongs. We prove that n_R is the greatest positive integer which divides the order of (R mod p) for all but finitely many primes p of K. Furthermore, let m>0 be a multiple of n_R and let S be a finite set of rational primes. Then there exists a positive Dirichlet density of primes p of K such that for every l in S the l-adic valuation of the order of (R mod p) e…
For $x>0$ let $π(x)$ denote the number of primes not exceeding $x$. For integers $a$ and $m>0$, we determine when there is an integer $n>1$ with $π(n)=(n+a)/m$. In particular, we show that for any integers $m>2$ and $a\le\lceil e^{m-1}/(m-1)\rceil$ there is an integer $n>1$ with $π(n)=(n+a)/m$. Consequently, for any integer $m>4$ there is a positive integer $n$ with $π(mn)=m+n$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that for each $m=1,2,3,\ldots$ there is a positive integer $n$ such that $m+n$ divides $p_m+p_n$, where $p_k$ denotes the $k$-th prime.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the set of all integers of the form $\gcd(n, F_n)$, where $n$ is a positive integer and $F_n$ denotes the $n$th Fibonacci number. We prove that $\#\left(\mathcal{A} \cap [1, x]\right) \gg x / \log x$ for all $x \geq 2$, and that $\mathcal{A}$ has zero asymptotic density. Our proofs rely on a recent result of Cubre and Rouse which gives, for each positive integer $n$, an explicit formula for the density of primes $p$ such that $n$ divides the rank of appearance of $p$, that is, the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $p$ divides $F_k$.
A set of positive integers is primitive (or 1-primitive) if no member divides another. Erdős proved in 1935 that the weighted sum $\sum1/(n \log n)$ for $n$ ranging over a primitive set $A$ is universally bounded over all choices for $A$. In 1988 he asked if this universal bound is attained by the set of prime numbers. One source of difficulty in this conjecture is that $\sum n^{-λ}$ over a primitive set is maximized by the primes if and only if $λ$ is at least the critical exponent $τ_1 \approx 1.14$. A set is $k$-primitive if no member divides any product of up to $k$ other distinct members.…
We examine Euclid's lemma that if $p$ is a prime number such that $p | ab$, then $p$ divides at least one of $a$ or $b$. Specifically, we consider the common misapplication of this lemma to numbers that are not prime, as is often made by undergraduate students. We show that a randomly chosen implication of the form $r |ab \Rightarrow r|a \text{ or } r|b$ is almost surely false in a probabilistic sense, and we quantify this with a corresponding asymptotic formula.
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal O_{K}$. We prove that if $3$ does not divide $ [K:\mathbb Q]$ and $3$ splits completely in $K$, then the unit equation has no solutions in $K$. In other words, there are no $x, y \in \mathcal O_{K}^{\times}$ with $x + y = 1$. Our elementary $p$-adic proof is inspired by the Skolem-Chabauty-Coleman method applied to the restriction of scalars of the projective line minus three points. Applying this result to a problem in arithmetic dynamics, we show that if $f \in \mathcal O_{K}[x]$ has a finite cyclic orbit in $\mathcal O_{K}$ of length…
