Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $K=\mathbb{Q}(ε)$ where $ε$ is a primitive cubic root of unity, and let $L$ be the Kummer field $\mathbb{Q}\left(ε, \sqrt[3]α\right)$. In this paper we obtain a characterization of the splitting behavior of the symbol algebras $\left( \frac{α,p}{K,ε}\right)$ and $\left( \frac{α,p^{h_{p}}}{K,ε}\right)$, where $h_{p}$ is the order in the class group $Cl\left(L\right)$ of a prime ideal of $\mathcal{O}_L$ which divides $p\mathcal{O}_L.$
We prove an explicit upper bound for the k-th prime ideal with fixed Artin symbol, under the assumption of the validity of the Riemann hypothesis for the Dedekind zeta functions.
We explicitly write down the Eisenstein elements inside the space of modular symbols for Eisenstein series with integer coefficients for the congruence subgroups Γ_0 (pq) with p and q distinct odd primes, giving an answer to a question of Merel in these cases. We also compute the winding elements explicitly for these congruence subgroups. Our results are explicit versions of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem.
We try to improve a problem asked in an Indian Math Olympiad. We give a brief overview of the work done in Saikia and Vogrinc (2011) and Saikia and Vogrinc where the authors have found a periodic sequence and the length of its period, all inspired from an Olympiad problem. The main goal of the paper is to improve the main result in Saikia and Vogrinc (2011).
Let $m$ be any positive integer and let $δ_1,δ_2\in\{1,-1\}$. We show that for some constanst $C_m>0$ there are infinitely many integers $n>1$ with $p_{n+m}-p_n\le C_m$ such that $$\left(\frac{p_{n+i}}{p_{n+j}}\right)=δ_1\ \quad\text{and}\ \quad\left(\frac{p_{n+j}}{p_{n+i}}\right)=δ_2$$ for all $0\le i<j\le m$, where $p_k$ denotes the $k$-th prime, and $(\frac {\cdot}p)$ denotes the Legendre symbol for any odd prime $p$. We also prove that under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $p_{n+i}$ is a primitive root modulo $p_{n+j}$ for any di…
In this paper we determine sufficient conditions for a quaternion algebra to split over a quadratic field. In the last section of the paper, we find a class of division symbol algebras of degree $n$ (where $n$ is a positive integer, $n\geq 3$) over a $p-$ adic field or over a cyclotomic field.
For $0\leq α<1$ and prime number $p$ let $L(α,p)$ be the sum of the first $[αp]$ values of Legendre symbol modulo $p$. We study positivity of $L(α,p)$ and prove that for $|α-\frac13|<2\cdot 10^{-6}$ and for rational $α\leq \frac12$ with denominators in the set $\{1,2,3,4,5,6,8,12\}$ the inequality $L(α,p)\geq 0$ holds for majority of primes.
We study the splitting of primes in number fields generated by points on modular curves. Momose was the first to notice that quadratic points on $X_1(n)$ generate quadratic fields over which certain primes split in a particular way and his results were later expanded upon by Krumm. We prove results about the splitting behaviour of primes in quadratic fields generated by points on the modular curves $X_0(n)$ which are hyperelliptic (except for $n=37$) and in cubic fields generated by points on $X_1(2, 14)$.
Let p be a prime number, and let K be a number field. For p=2, assume moreover K totally imaginary. In this note we prove the existence of asymptotically good extensions L{K of cohomological dimension 2 in which infinitely many primes split completely. Our result is inspired by a recent work of Hajir, Maire, and Ramakrishna [7].
Suppose that $p$ is an odd prime and $\genfrac{(}{)}{}{}{\cdot}{p}$ denotes the Legendre symbol modulo $p$. If $p$ is has the form $p= n^2+1$ then one easily verifies that $\genfrac{(}{)}{}{}{a}{p} = \genfrac{(}{)}{}{}{-a}{p}$ for all $a\in \mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$. We identify various symmetry properties of sequential matrices over $\mathbb Z/(n^2+1)\mathbb Z$ regardless of whether $n^2+1$ is prime. We deduce from these results a collection of symmetries involving Jacobi symbol modulo $n^2+1$ which generalize our above observation on the Legendre symbol.
In this paper, we obtain some properties of the symbol algebras, starting from their connections with the quaternion and cyclic algebras over a field $K_{p},$% where $K$ is an algebraic number field, $p$ is a prime in $K$ and $K_{p}$ is the completion of $K$ with respect to $p-$ adic valuation, in the case when $K=\Bbb{Q}(\varepsilon), \varepsilon ^{3}=1,\varepsilon \neq 1.$
We prove the non-vanishing of special $L$-values of cuspidal automorphic forms on GL(2) twisted by Hecke characters of prime power orders and totally split prime power conductors. Main ingredients of the proof are estimating the Galois averages of fast convergent series expressions of special $L$-values and considering Shintani cone decomposition.
In this paper, we investigate sign changes of Fourier coefficients of half-integral weight cusp forms. In a fixed square class $t\mathbb{Z}^2$, we investigate the sign changes in the $tp^2$-th coefficient as $p$ runs through the split or inert primes over the ring of integers in a quadratic extension of the rationals. We show that sign changes occur in both sets of primes when there exists a prime dividing the discriminant of the field which does not divide the level of the cusp form and find an explicit condition that determines whether sign changes occur when every prime dividing the discrim…
One aspect of Chebyshev's bias is the phenomenon that a prime number, $ q $, modulo another prime number, $ p$, experimentally seems to be slightly more likely to be a nonquadratic residue than a quadratic residue. We thought it would be interesting to model this residue bias as a "random" walk using Legendre symbol values as steps. Such a model would allow us to easily visualize the bias. In addition, we would be able to extend our model to other number fields. In this report, we first outline underlying theory and some motivations for our research. In the second section, we present our findi…
In this paper, we introduce the 4-th multiple residue symbol $[p_1, p_2, p_3, p_4]$ for certain four prime numbers $p_1, p_2, p_3, p_4$, which extends the Legendre symbol and the Rédei triple symbol in a natural manner. For this we construct concretely a certain nilpotent extension K over Q of degree 64, where ramified prime numbers are $p_1$, $p_2$ and $p_3$, such that the symbol $[p_1, p_2, p_3, p_4]$ describes the decomposition law of $p_4$ in the extension K/Q. We then establish the relation of our symbol and the 4-th arithmetic Milnor invariant (an arithmetic analogue of the 4-th order li…
Given a prime number $l$ and a finite set of integers $S=\{a_1,...,a_m\}$ we find out the exact degree of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(a_1^{\frac{1}{l}},...,a_m^{\frac{1}{l}})/\mathbb{Q}$. We give two different ways to compute this degree. The first method is using ramifiaction theory. The second proof follwos from our study of the distribution of primes $p$ for which all of $a_i$ are $l^{th}$ power residue simultaneously.
An identity for binomial symbols modulo an odd positive integer $n$ relating to the least prime factor of $n$ is proved. The identity is discussed within the context of Pell conics.
We introduce mod 3 triple Milnor invariants and triple cubic residue symbols for certain primes of the Eisenstein number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$, following the analogies between knots and primes. Our triple symbol generalizes both the cubic residue symbol and Rédei's triple symbol, and describes the decomposition law of a prime in a mod 3 Heisenberg extension of degree 27 over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ with restricted ramification, which we construct concretely in the form similar to Rédei's dihedral extension over $\mathbb{Q}$. We also give a cohomological interpretation of our symbols by…
Let $K/F$ be a finite extension of number fields of degree $n \geq 2$. We establish effective field-uniform unconditional upper bounds for the least norm of a prime ideal of $F$ which is degree 1 over $\mathbb{Q}$ and does not ramify or split completely in $K$. We improve upon the previous best known general estimates due to X. Li when $F = \mathbb{Q}$ and Murty-Patankar when $K/F$ is Galois. Our bounds are the first when $K/F$ is not assumed to be Galois and $F \neq \mathbb{Q}$.
We analyze the probability that, for a fixed finite set of primes S, a random, monic, degree n polynomial f(x) with integer coefficients in a box of side B around 0 satisfies: (i) f(x) is irreducible over the rationals, with splitting field over the rationals having Galois group $S_n$; (ii) the polynomial discriminant Disc(f) is relatively prime to all primes in S; (iii) f(x) has a prescribed splitting type at each prime p in S. The limit probabilities as $B \to \infty$ are described in terms of values of a one-parameter family of measures on $S_n$, called splitting measures, with parameter $z…
We study the automorphisms of the non-split Cartan modular curves $X_{ns}(p)$ of prime level $p$. We prove that if $p\geq 37$ all the automorphisms preserve the cusps. Furthermore, if $p\equiv 1\text{ mod }12$ and $p\neq 13$, the automorphism group is generated by the modular involution given by the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\text{GL}_2(\mathbb F_p)$. We also prove that for every $p\geq 37$ such that $X_{ns}(p)$ has a CM rational point, the existence of an exceptional rational automorphism would give rise to an exceptional rational point on the modular curve $X_{ns}^+(p)$ a…
We study the splitting fields of the family of polynomials $f_n(X)= X^n-X-1$. This family of polynomials has been much studied in the literature and has some remarkable properties. Serre related the function on primes $N_p(f_n)$, for a fixed $n \leq 4$ and $p$ a varying prime, which counts the number of roots of $f_n(X)$ in $\mathbb F_p$ to coefficients of modular forms. We study the case $n=5$, and relate $N_p(f_5)$ to mod $5$ modular forms over $\mathbb Q$, and to characteristic 0, parallel weight 1 Hilbert modular forms over $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{19 \cdot 151})$.
Analogously to primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, we can study primes that are totally split in extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of high degree. Motivated by a question of Kowalski we focus on the extensions $\mathbb{Q}(E[d])$ obtained by adjoining the coordinates of $d$-torsion points of a non-CM elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$. A prime $p$ is said to be an outside prime of $E$ if it is totally split in $\mathbb{Q}(E[d])$ for some $d$ with $p<|\text{Gal}(\mathbb{Q}(E[d])/\mathbb{Q})| = d^{4-o(1)}$ (so that $p$ is not accounted for by the expected main term in the Chebotarev Density Th…
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an imaginary quadratic field such that $2$ splits into two primes $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\bar{\mathfrak{p}}$. Let $\mathbb{K}_{\infty}$ be the unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $\mathbb{K}$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $\mathfrak{f}$ be an ideal coprime to $\mathfrak{p}$ and $\mathbb{L}$ be an arbitrary extension of $\mathbb{K}$ contained in the ray class field $\mathbb{K}(\mathfrak{p}^2\mathfrak{f})$. Let $\mathbb{L}_{\infty}=\mathbb{K}_{\infty}\mathbb{L}$ and let $\mathbb{M}$ be the maximal $p$-abelian, $\mathfrak{p}$-ramified extension of $\mathbb{L}_{\infty}$. W…
We use Vinogradov's method to prove equidistribution of a spin symbol governing the $16$-rank of class groups of quadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-2p})$, where $p \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ is a prime.
Given a prime number $l$ and a finite set of integers $S=\{a_1,...,a_m\}$ we find out the exact degree of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(a_1^{\frac{1}{l}},...,a_m^{\frac{1}{l}})/\mathbb{Q}$. We give an algorithm to compute this degree and then further relate it to the study of the distribution of primes $p$ for which all of $a_i$ assume a preassigned $l^{th}$ power residue simultaneously. Also we relate this degree to rank of a matrix obtained from $S=\{a_1,...,a_m\}$. This latter arguement enable one to describe the degree $\mathbb{Q}(a_1^{\frac{1}{l}},...,a_m^{\frac{1}{l}})/\mathbb{Q}$ in much si…
What is the period of the Fibonacci sequence modulo a prime? The purpose of our brief expository paper is to illustrate an accessible, motivated treatment of this classical topic using only ideas from linear and abstract algebra (rather than the case-by-case analysis found in many papers on the subject, or techniques from graduate number theory). Our methods extend to general recurrences with prime moduli and provide some new insights. And our treatment highlights a nice application of the use of splitting fields that might be suitable to present in undergraduate course in abstract algebra or …
We study the problem of bounding the least prime that does not split completely in a number field. This is a generalization of the classic problem of bounding the least quadratic non-residue. Here, we present two distinct approaches to this problem. The first is by studying the behavior of the Dedekind zeta function of the number field near 1, and the second by relating the problem to questions involving multiplicative functions. We derive the best known bounds for this problem for all number fields with degree greater than 2. We also derive the best known upper bound for the residue of the De…
We study the first moments of central values of Hecke $L$-functions associated with quadratic, cubic and quartic symbols to prime moduli. This also enables us to obtain results on first moments of central values of certain families of cubic and quartic Dirichlet $L$-functions of prime moduli.
In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer $n\equiv3\pmod4$, we show that $$(6,1)_n=[6,1]_n=(3,2)_n=[3,2]_n=0$$ and $$(4,2)_n=(8,8)_n=(3,3)_n=(21,112)_n=0$$ as conjectured by Sun, where $$(c,d)_n=\bigg|\left(\frac{i^2+cij+dj^2}n\right)\bigg|_{1\le i,j\le n-1}$$ and $$[c,d]_n=\bigg|\left(\frac{i^2+cij+dj^2}n\right)\bigg|_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$$ with $(\frac{\cdot}n)$ the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that $(10,9)_p=0$ for any prime $p\equiv5\pmod{12}$, and $[5,5]_p=0$ for any prime $p\equiv 13,17\pmod{20}$, which we…
We construct a collection of matrices defined by quadratic residue symbols, termed "quadratic residue matrices", associated to the splitting behavior of prime ideals in a composite of quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$, and prove a simple criterion characterizing such matrices. We also study the analogous classes of matrices constructed from the cubic and quartic residue symbols for a set of prime ideals of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, respectively.
We define and study the space of mixed modular symbols for a given finite index subgroup $Γ$ of $SL_2(\mathbf{Z})$. This is an extension of the usual space of modular symbols, which in some cases carries more information about Eisenstein series. We make use of mixed modular symbols to construct some $1$-motives related to the generalized Jacobian of modular curves. In the case $Γ= Γ_0(p)$ for some prime $p$, we relate our construction to the work of Ehud de Shalit on $p$-adic periods of $X_0(p)$.
In a recent paper of the author with D. Dummit and H. Kisilevsky, we constructed a collection of matrices defined by quadratic residue symbols, termed "quadratic residue matrices", associated to the splitting behavior of prime ideals in a composite of quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$, and proved a simple criterion characterizing such matrices. We then analyzed the analogous classes of matrices constructed from the cubic and quartic residue symbols for a set of prime ideals of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, respectively. In this paper, the goal is to construct and study the fi…
Formal languages are sets of strings of symbols described by a set of rules specific to them. In this note, we discuss a certain class of formal languages, called regular languages, and put forward some elementary results. The properties of these languages are then employed to prove that there are infinitely many prime numbers.
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal O_{K}$. We prove that if $3$ does not divide $ [K:\mathbb Q]$ and $3$ splits completely in $K$, then the unit equation has no solutions in $K$. In other words, there are no $x, y \in \mathcal O_{K}^{\times}$ with $x + y = 1$. Our elementary $p$-adic proof is inspired by the Skolem-Chabauty-Coleman method applied to the restriction of scalars of the projective line minus three points. Applying this result to a problem in arithmetic dynamics, we show that if $f \in \mathcal O_{K}[x]$ has a finite cyclic orbit in $\mathcal O_{K}$ of length…
Let $q$ be a quadratic form over a field $F$ and let $L$ be a field extension of $F$ of odd degree. It is a classical result that if $q_L$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic) then $q$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic). In turn, given two quadratic forms $q, q^\prime$ over $F$, if $q_L \cong q^\prime_L$ then $q \cong q^\prime$. It is natural to ask whether similar results hold for algebras with involution. We give a survey of the progress on these three questions with particular attention to the relevance of hyperbolicity, isotropy and isomorphism over some {appropriate} function field. Incidentally,…
The evaluations of determinants with Legendre symbol entries have close relation with character sums over finite fields. Recently, Sun posed some conjectures on this topic. In this paper, we prove some conjectures of Sun and also study some variants. For example, we show the following result: Let $p=a^2+4b^2$ be a prime with $a,b$ integers and $a\equiv1\pmod4$. Then for the determinant $$S(1,p):={\rm det}\bigg[\left(\frac{i^2+j^2}{p}\right)\bigg]_{1\le i,j\le \frac{p-1}{2}},$$ the number $S(1,p)/a$ is an integral square, which confirms a conjecture posed by Cohen, Sun and Vsemirnov.
We complete the description of semistable models for modular curves associated with maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_2 ({\mathbb F}_p )$ (for $p$ any prime, $p>5$). That is, in the new cases of non-split Cartan modular curves and exceptional subgroups, we identify the irreducible components and singularities of the reduction mod $p$, and the complete local rings at the singularities. We review the case of split Cartan modular curves. This description suffices for computing the group of connected components of the fibre at $p$ of the Néron model of the Jacobian.
We study the local behavior of special cycles on Shimura varieties for $\mathbf{U}(2, 1) \times \mathbf{U}(1, 1)$ in the setting of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjectures at primes $τ$ of the totally real field of definition of the unitary spaces which are split in the corresponding totally imaginary quadratic extension. We establish a local formula for their fields of definition, and prove a distribution relation between the Galois and Hecke actions on them. This complements work of \cite{jetchev:unitary} at inert primes, where the combinatorics of the formulas are reduced to calculations on the Br…
We prove that there exists an integer p_0 such that X_split(p)(Q) is made of cusps and CM-points for any prime p>p_0. Equivalently, for any non-CM elliptic curve E over Q and any prime p>p_0 the image of the Galois representation induced by the Galois action on the p-division points of E is not contained in the normalizer of a split Cartan subgroup. This gives a partial answer to an old question of Serre.
Let $d$ and $m$ be two distinct squarefree integers and $\mathcal{O}_K$ the ring of integers of the quadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$. Denote by $ H_K(α, m)$ a quaternion algebra over $K$, where $α\in \mathcal{O}_K$. In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for $ H_K(α, m)$ to split over $K$ for some values of $α$, and we obtain a complete characterization of division quaternion algebras $ H_K(α, m)$ over $K$ whenever $α$ and $m$ are two distinct positive prime integers. Examples are given involving prime Fibonacci numbers.
Let $p>3$ be a prime, and let $(\frac{\cdot}p)$ be the Legendre symbol. Let $b\in\mathbb Z$ and $\varepsilon\in\{\pm 1\}$. We mainly prove that $$\left|\left\{N_p(a,b):\ 1<a<p\ \text{and}\ \left(\frac ap\right)=\varepsilon\right\}\right|=\frac{3-(\frac{-1}p)}2,$$ where $N_p(a,b)$ is the number of positive integers $x<p/2$ with $\{x^2+b\}_p>\{ax^2+b\}_p$, and $\{m\}_p$ with $m\in\mathbb{Z}$ is the least nonnegative residue of $m$ modulo $p$.
