The two dimensional Jacobian Conjecture says that a morphism $f:\mathbb{C}[x,y]\to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ having an invertible Jacobian, is invertible. We show that a morphism $f$ having an invertible Jacobian is invertible, in each of the following two special cases: The degree of $f(x)$ is $\leq 2$; The $(0,1)$-degrees or $(1,0)$-degrees of all monomials in $f(x)$ are of the same parity. In each case there is no restriction on the degree of $f(y)$ nor on the parity of the $(0,1)$-degrees or $(1,0)$-degrees of its monomials.
A non-zero constant Jacobian polynomial maps $F=(P,Q)$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ is invertible if $P$ and $Q$ are rational polynomials.
The famous Jacobian Conjecture asks if a morphism $f:K[x,y]\to K[x,y]$ with invertible Jacobian, is invertible ($K$ is a characteristic zero field). A known result says that if $K[f(x),f(y)] \subseteq K[x,y]$ is an integral extension, then $f$ is invertible. We slightly generalize this known result to the following: If for some "good" $λ\in K$ (in a sense that will be explained) $m K[x,y] \neq K[x,y]$ for every maximal ideal $m$ of $K[f(x),f(y)][x+ λy]$, then $f$ is invertible. We also apply our ideas to the Jacobian Conjecture, without any further assumptions.
Let $F: C^n \rightarrow C^m$ be a polynomial map with $degF=d \geq 2$. We prove that $F$ is invertible if $m = n$ and $\sum^{d-1}_{i=1} JF(α_i)$ is invertible for all $i$, which is trivially the case for invertible quadratic maps. More generally, we prove that for affine lines $L = \{β+ μγ| μ\in C\} \subseteq C^n$ ($γ\ne 0$), $F|_L$ is linearly rectifiable, if and only if $\sum^{d-1}_{i=1} JF(α_i) \cdot γ\ne 0$ for all $α_i \in L$. This appears to be the case for all affine lines $L$ when $F$ is injective and $d \le 3$. We also prove that if $m = n$ and $\sum^{n}_{i=1} JF(α_i)$ is invertible f…
Let K[x,y] be the algebra of two-variable polynomials over a field K. A polynomial p=p(x, y) is called a test polynomial (for automorphisms) if, whenever ϕ(p)=p for a mapping ϕof K[x,y], this ϕmust be an automorphism. Here we show that p \in C[x,y] is a test polynomial if and only if p does not belong to any proper retract of C[x,y]. This has the following corollary that may have application to the Jacobian conjecture: if a mapping ϕof C[x,y] with invertible Jacobian matrix is ``invertible on one particular polynomial", then it is an automorphism. More formally: if there is a non-constant poly…

The two-dimensional Jacobian Conjecture says that a $\mathbb{C}$-algebra endomorphism $F:\mathbb{C}[x,y] \to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ that has an invertible Jacobian is an automorphism. We show that if a $\mathbb{C}$-algebra endomorphism $F:\mathbb{C}[x,y] \to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ has an invertible Jacobian and if $v \in \mathbb{C}[F(x),F(y),x]$ is a product of prime elements of $\mathbb{C}[F(x),F(y),x]$, then $F$ is an automorphism, where $v$ is such that $y = u/v$, where $u \in \mathbb{C}[F(x),F(y),x]$.
The famous Jacobian problem asks: Is a morphism $f:\mathbb{C}[x,y]\to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ having an invertible Jacobian, invertible? If we add the assumption that $\mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))=\mathbb{C}(x,y)$, then $f$ is invertible; this result is due to O. H. Keller (1939). We suggest the following slight generalization of Keller's theorem: If $f:\mathbb{C}[x,y]\to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ is a morphism having an invertible Jacobian, and if there exist $n \geq 1$, $a \in \mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))^*$ and $b \in \mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))$ such that $(ax +b)^n \in \mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))$, then $f$ is invertible. A simil…
The Jacobian Conjecture uses the equation $det(Jac(F))\in k^*$, which is a very short way to write down many equations putting restrictions on the coefficients of a polynomial map $F$. In characteristic $p$ these equations do not suffice to (conjecturally) force a polynomial map to be invertible. In this article, we describe how to construct the conjecturally sufficient equations in characteristic $p$ forcing a polynomial map to be invertible. This provides an (alternative to Adjamagbo's formulation) definition of the Jacobian Conjecture in characteristic $p$. We strengthen this formulation by…
The Jacobian conjecture in dimension $n$ asserts that any polynomial endomorphism of $n$-dimensional affine space over a field of zero characteristic, with the Jacobian equal 1, is invertible. The Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$ asserts that any endomorphism of the $n$-th Weyl algebra (the algebra of polynomial differential operators in $n$ variables) is invertible. We prove that the Jacobian conjecture in dimension $2n$ implies the Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$. Together with a well-known implication in the opposite direction, it shows that the stable Jacobian and Dixmier conjectures are equi…
We give a quasihomogeneity criterion for Gorenstein curves. For complete intersections, it is related to the first step of Vasconcelos' normalization algorithm. In the process, we give a simplified proof of the Kunz-Ruppert criterion.
We are concerned with the behavior of the polynomial maps $F=(P,Q)$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ with finite fibres and satisfying the condition that all of the curves $aP+bQ=0$, $(a:b)\in \mathbb{P}^1$, are irreducible rational curves. The obtained result shows that such polynomial maps $F$ is invertible if $(0,0)$ is a regular value of $F$ or if the Jacobian condition holds.
Let $f: \mathbb{C}[x,y] \to \mathbb{C}[x,y]$ be a $\mathbb{C}$-algebra endomorphism having an invertible Jacobian. We show that for such $f$, if, in addition, the group of invertible elements of $\mathbb{C}[f(x),f(y),x][1/v] \subset \mathbb{C}(x,y)$ is contained in $\mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))-0$, then $f$ is an automorphism. Here $v \in \mathbb{C}[f(x),f(y)]-0$ is such that $y = u/v$, with $u \in \mathbb{C}[f(x),f(y),x]-0$. Keller's theorem (in dimension two) follows immediately, since Keller's condition $\mathbb{C}(f(x),f(y))=\mathbb{C}(x,y)$ implies that the group of invertible elements of $\math…
Let f_1,...,f_r be homogeneous polynomials in K[x_1,...,x_n], K a field. Put F=y_1f_1+...+y_rf_r in K[x,y] and let I be the ideal of K[x,y] generated by the partials of F relative to the x_i and y_j. The Jacobian ring of F is the quotient J:=K[x,y]/I. We describe J by computing the cohomology of a certain complex whose top cohomology group is J.
This note gives the complete projective classification of rational, cuspidal plane curves of degree at least 6, and having only weighted homogeneous singularities. It also sheds new light on some previous characterizations of free and nearly free curves in terms of Tjurina numbers. Finally, we suggest a stronger form of Terao's conjecture on the freeness of a line arrangement being determined by its combinatorics.
We make two observations regarding the invertibility of Keller maps. i.e., polynomial maps for which the determinant of their Jacobian matrix is identically equal to 1. In our first result, we show that if P is a n-dimensional Keller map, defined over any extension of Q, then P has a polynomial inverse if and only if the range of P contains the cartesian product of n universal Hilbert sets. In our second result, we show that if P is a 2-dimensional Keller map, defined over any algebraic number field, then P is invertible on a set that contains almost all rational integers of K.
In this paper, we study higher derivations of Jacobian type in positive characteristic. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(n-1)$-tuples of polynomials to be extendable in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over an integral domain $R$ of positive characteristic. In particular, we give characterizations of variables and univariate polynomials by using the terms of higher derivations of Jacobian type in the polynomial ring in two variables over a field of positive characteristic.
In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of…
We establish an invertibility criterion for free polynomials and free functions evaluated on some tuples of matrices. We show that if the derivative is nonsingular on some domain closed with respect to direct sums and similarity, the function must be invertible. Thus, as a corollary, we establish the Jacobian conjecture in this context. Furthermore, our result holds for commutative polynomials evaluated on tuples of commuting matrices.
In this paper, we study the classes of rings in which every proper (regular) ideal can be factored as an invertible ideal times a nonempty product of proper radical ideals. More precisely, we investigate the stability of these properties under homomorphic image and their transfer to various contexts of constructions such as direct product, trivial ring extension and amalgamated duplication of a ring along an ideal. Our results generate examples that enrich the current literature with new and original families of rings satisfying these properties.
The Jacobian ideal of a hyperplane arrangement is an ideal in the polynomial ring whose generators are the partial derivatives of the arrangements defining polynomial. In this article, we prove that an arrangement can be reconstructed from its Jacobian ideal.

It is proved that for a ring $R$ that is either an affine algebra over a field, or an equicharacteristic complete local ring, some power of the Jacobian ideal of $R$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{d+1}_{R}(-,-)$, where $d$ is the Krull dimension of $R$. Sufficient conditions are identified under which the Jacobian ideal itself annihilates these Ext-modules, and examples are provided that show that this is not always the case. A crucial new idea is to consider a derived version of the Noether different of an algebra.
We obtain two equivalent conditions for m polynomials in n variables to form a p-basis of a ring of constants of some polynomial K-derivation, where K is a UFD of characteristic p>0. One of these conditions involves jacobians, and the second - some properties of factors. In the case of m=n this extends the known theorem of Nousiainen, and we obtain a new formulation of the jacobian conjecture in positive characteristic.
Let S be a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero in finitely may variables. Let T be an unramified, finitely generated extension of S with $T^\times = k^\times$. Then T = S.
We study meromorphic jacobian pairs, i.e., pairs of polynomials in one variable, with coefficients meromorphic series in a second variable, whose jacobian relative to the two variables depends only on the second variable. We pose two meromorphic jacobian conjectures about such pairs, one of which is in terms of an invariant of the pair which we call the beta invariant. These conjectures are shown to imply the bivariate algebraic jacobian conjecture which predicts that two bivariate polynomials generate the polynomial ring if their jacobian is a nonzero constant. As another technique for studyi…
Let $ K[x, y]$ be the polynomial algebra in two variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A subalgebra $R$ of $K[x, y]$ is called a retract if there is an idempotent homomorphism (a {\it retraction}, or {\it projection}) $φ: K[x, y] \to K[x, y]$ such that $φ(K[x, y]) = R$. The presence of other, equivalent, definitions of retracts provides several different methods of studying them, and brings together ideas from combinatorial algebra, homological algebra, and algebraic geometry. In this paper, we characterize all the retracts of $ K[x, y]$ up to an automorphism, and give several appli…
Let $X$ be a scheme, proper over a commutative noetherian ring $A$. We introduce the concept of an ample filter of invertible sheaves on $X$ and generalize the most important equivalent criteria for ampleness of an invertible sheaf. We also prove the Theorem of the Base for $X$ and generalize Serre's Vanishing Theorem. We then generalize results for twisted homogeneous coordinate rings which were previously known only when $X$ was projective over an algebraically closed field. Specifically, we show that the concepts of left and right $σ$-ampleness are equivalent and that the associated twisted…

Let $R$ be a commutative unital ring. A well-known factorization problem is whether any matrix in $\mathrm{SL}_n(R)$ is a product of elementary matrices with entries in $R$. To solve the problem, we use two approaches based on the notion of the Bass stable rank and on construction of a null-homotopy. Special attention is given to the case, where $R$ is a ring or Banach algebra of holomorphic functions. Also, we consider a related problem on representation of a matrix in $\mathrm{GL}_n(R)$ as a product of exponentials.

We prove that an irreducible polynomial derivation in positive characteristic is a Jacobian derivation if and only if there exists an n-1-element p-basis of its ring of constants. In the case of two variables we characterize these derivations in terms of their divergence and some nontrivial constants.
We show how several results about p-adic lattices generalize easily to lattices over valuation ring of arbitrary rank having only the Henselian property for quadratic polynomial. If 2 is invertible we obtain the uniqueness of the Jordan decomposition and the Witt Cancelation Theorem. We show that the isomorphism classes of indecomposable rank 2 lattices over such a ring in which 2 is not invertible are characterized by two invariants, provided that the lattices contain a primitive norm divisible by 2 of maximal valuation.
We give an elementary proof of a Caratheodory-type result on the invertibility of a sum of matrices, due first to Facchini and Barioli. The proof yields a polynomial identity, expressing the determinant of a large sum of matrices in terms of determinants of smaller sums. Interpreting these results over an arbitrary commutative ring gives a stabilization result for a filtered family of ideals of determinants. Generalizing in another direction gives a characterization of local rings. An analogous result for semilocal rings is also given -- interestingly, the semilocal case reduces to the case of…

Let A be a polynomial algebra with complex coefficients. Let B be a finite extension ring of A which is also a polynomial algebra. We describe the factorisation of the Jacobian J of the extension into irreducibles. We also introduce the notion of a well-ramified extension and define its discriminant polynomial D. In the particular case where A is the ring of invariants of B under the action of a group (i.e., a Galois extension), this framework corresponds to the classical invariant theory of complex reflection groups. In the more general case of a well-ramified extension, we explain how the pa…
