For positive integers $j\ge k$, an $L(j,k)$-labeling of a digraph $D$ is a function $f$ from $V(D)$ into the set of nonnegative integers such that $|f(x)-f(y)|\ge j$ if $x$ is adjacent to $y$ in $D$ and $|f(x)-f(y)|\ge k$ if $x$ is of distant two to $y$ in $D$. Elements of the image of $f$ are called labels. The $L(j,k)$-labeling problem is to determine the $\vecλ_{j,k}$-number $\vecλ_{j,k}(D)$ of a digraph $D$, which is the minimum of the maximum label used in an $L(j,k)$-labeling of $D$. This paper studies $\vecλ_{j,k}$- numbers of digraphs. In particular, we determine $\vecλ_{j,k}$- numbers of digraphs whose longest dipath is of length at most 2, and $\vecλ_{j,k}$-numbers of ditrees having dipaths of length 4. We also give bounds for $\vecλ_{j,k}$-numbers of bipartite digraphs whose longest dipath is of length 3. Finally, we present a linear-time algorithm for determining $\vecλ_{j,1}$-numbers of ditrees whose longest dipath is of length 3.
A $(0,1)$-labeling of a set is said to be friendly if the number of elements of the set labeled 0 and the number labeled 1 differ by at most 1. Let $g$ be a labeling of the edge set of a graph that is induced by a labeling $f$ of the vertex set. If both $g$ and $f$ are friendly then $g$ is said to be a cordial labeling of the graph. We extend this concept to directed graphs and investigate the cordiality of directed graphs. We show that all directed paths and all directed cycles are cordial. We also discuss the cordiality of oriented trees and other digraphs.
Let $\overrightarrow{G}$ be a directed graph of order $n$ with no component of order less than $4$, and let $Γ$ be a finite Abelian group such that $|Γ|\geq n+6$. We show that there exists a mapping $ψ$ from the arc set $E(\overrightarrow{G})$ of $\overrightarrow{G}$ to an Abelian group $Γ$ such that if we define a mapping $φ_ψ$ from the vertex set $V(\overrightarrow{G})$ of $\overrightarrow{G}$ to $Γ$ by $$φ_ψ(x)=\sum_{y\in N^+(x)}ψ(xy)-\sum_{y\in N^-(x)}ψ(yx),\;\;\;(x\in V(\overrightarrow{G})),$$ then $φ_ψ$ is injective. Such a labeling $ψ$ is called \textit{irregular}.
Magic labelings of graphs are studied in great detail by Stanley and Stewart. In this article, we construct and enumerate magic labelings of graphs using Hilbert bases of polyhedral cones and Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes. We define polytopes of magic labelings of graphs and digraphs. We give a description of the faces of the Birkhoff polytope as polytopes of magic labelings of digraphs.
DNA graph has important contribution in completing the computational step of DNA sequencing process. Using $(α,k)$-labeling, several families of digraphs have characterized as DNA graphs. Dicycles and dipaths are DNA graphs, rooted trees and self adjoint digraphs are DNA graphs if and only if their maximum degree is not greater than four, while the $m^{\text{th}}$ line digraph of dicycle with one chord is a DNA graph for all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$. In this paper we construct $(α,k)$-labeling to show that for all $m\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, the $m^{\text{th}}$ line digraph of dicycle $C_n$ with $\left\lflo…
We generalize chain enumeration in graded partially ordered sets by relaxing the graded, poset and Eulerian requirements. The resulting balanced digraphs, which include the classical Eulerian posets having an $R$-labeling, imply the existence of the (non-homogeneous) ${\bf cd}$-index, a key invariant for studying inequalities for the flag vector of polytopes. Mirroring Alexander duality for Eulerian posets, we show an analogue of Alexander duality for balanced digraphs. For Bruhat graphs of Coxeter groups, an important family of balanced graphs, our theory gives elementary proofs of the existe…
Let $D$ be a digraph, possibly with loops. A queen labeling of $D$ is a bijective function $l:V(G)\longrightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,|V(G)|\}$ such that, for every pair of arcs in $E(D)$, namely $(u,v)$ and $(u',v')$ we have (i) $l(u)+l(v)\neq l(u')+l(v')$ and (ii) $l(v)-l(u)\neq l(v')-l(u')$. Similarly, if the two conditions are satisfied modulo $n=|V(G)|$, we define a modular queen labeling. There is a bijection between (modular) queen labelings of $1$-regular digraphs and the solutions of the (modular) $n$-queens problem. The $\otimes_h$-product was introduced in 2008 as a generalization of the K…
A weakly distance-regular digraph is thick if its attached scheme is regular. In this paper, we show that each commutative thick weakly distance-regular digraph has a thick weakly distance-regular subdigraph such that the corresponding quotient digraph falls into six families of thick weakly distance-regular digraphs up to isomorphism.
A weakly distance-regular digraph is quasi-thin if the maximum value of its intersection numbers is 2. In this paper, we focus on commutative quasi-thin weakly distance-regular digraphs, and classify such digraphs with valency more than 3. As a result, this family of digraphs are completely determined.
We classify certain non-symmetric commutative association schemes. As an application, we determine all the primitive weakly distance-regular circulant digraphs.
In this paper, we classify commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs of valency 3 with girth more than 2 and one type of arcs. Combining [8, Theorem 1.2], [10, Theorem 1.3] and [11, Theorem 1], commutative weakly distanceregular digraphs of valency 3 are completely determined.
Suzuki (2004) [7] classified thin weakly distance-regular digraphs and pro- posed the project to classify weakly distance-regular digraphs of valency 3. The case of girth 2 was classified by the third author (2004) [9] under the assumption of the commutativity. In this paper, we continue this project and classify these digraphs with girth more than 2 and two types of arcs.
A weakly distance-regular digraph is 3-equivalenced if its attached association scheme is 3-equivalenced. In this paper, we classify the family of such digraphs under the assumption of the commutativity.
A weakly distance-regular digraph is quasi-thin if the maximum value of its intersection numbers is 2. In this paper, we show that the valency of any commutative quasi-thin weakly distance-regular digraph is at most 6.
A strongly connected digraph is called a cactoid-type if each of its blocks is a digraph consisting of finitely many oriented cycles sharing a common directed path. In this article, we find the formula for the determinant of the distance matrix for weighted cactoid-type digraphs and find its inverse, whenever it exists. We also compute the determinant of the distance matrix for a class of unweighted and undirected graphs consisting of finitely many cycles, sharing a common path.
In this paper, we study commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs whose attached association schemes are regular, and give a characterization of mixed arcs. As an application, we classify such digraphs of diameter 2.
In this paper, we present a detailed study of the reach distance-layer structure of the De Bruijn and Kautz digraphs, and we apply our analysis to the performance evaluation of deflection routing in De Bruijn and Kautz networks. Concerning the distance-layer structure, we provide explicit polynomial expressions, in terms of the degree of the digraph, for the cardinalities of some relevant sets of this structure. Regarding the application to defection routing, and as a consequence of our polynomial description of the distance-layer structure, we formulate explicit rational expressions, in terms…
In this paper, we classify all commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs of girth $g$ and one type of arcs under the assumption that $p_{(1,g-1),(1,g-1)}^{(2,g-2)}\geq k_{1,g-1}-2$. In consequence, we recover [13, Theorem 1.1] as a special case of our result.
We investigate the class of infinite distance-transitive digraphs $D$ of finite out-valency. We show that if $D$ is a weakly descendant-homogeneous in such a class then either (1) $D$ has property $Z$ and the reachability relation is not universal; or (2) $D$ does not have property $Z$, the reachability relation is universal and $D$ has infinite in-valency. Also, we show that earlier results, proved in the context of highly-arc-transitive digraphs, hold under the weaker condition of distance-transitivity. Finally, we give a description of a subclass of the class distance-transitive weakly desc…
In this paper, we show that the edge connectivity of a distance-regular digraph $Γ$ with valency $k$ is $k$ and for $k>2$, any minimum edge cut of $Γ$ is the set of all edges going into (or coming out of) a single vertex. Moreover we show that the same result holds for strongly regular digraphs. These results extend the same known results for undirected case with quite different proofs.
Let $D(G)$ and $D^Q(G)= Diag(Tr) + D(G)$ be the distance matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of a simple strongly connected digraph $G$, respectively, where $Diag(Tr)=\textrm{diag}(D_1,D_2,$ $\ldots,D_n)$ be the diagonal matrix with vertex transmissions of the digraph $G$. To track the gradual change of $D(G)$ into $D^Q(G)$, in this paper, we propose to study the convex combinations of $D(G)$ and $Diag(Tr)$ defined by $$D_α(G)=αDiag(Tr)+(1-α)D(G), \ \ 0\leq α\leq1.$$ This study reduces to merging the distance spectral and distance signless Laplacian spectral theories. The eigenvalue …
It is known that every distance-regular digraph is connected and normal. An interesting question is: when is a given connected normal digraph distance-regular? Motivated by this question first we give some characterizations of weakly distance-regular digraphs. Specially we show that whether a given connected digraph to be weakly distance-regular only depends on the equality for two invariants. Then we show that a connected normal digraph $\G$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues is distance-regular if and only if the simple excess (the ratio of the square of mean of the numbers of shortest paths be…
An integer distance digraph is the Cayley graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ of the additive group $\mathbb{Z}$ of all integers with respect to some finite subset $S \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$. The domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ is the minimum density of a dominating set in $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$. We establish some basic results on the domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ and precisely determine it when $S=\{s,t\}$ with $s$ dividing $t$.
Seymour's distance two conjecture states that in any digraph there exists a vertex (a "Seymour vertex") that has at least as many neighbors at distance two as it does at distance one. We explore the validity of probabilistic statements along lines suggested by Seymour's conjecture, proving that almost surely there are a "large" number of Seymour vertices in random tournaments and "even more" in general random digraphs.
A unified approach to the determination of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of specific matrices associated with directed graphs is presented. Matrices studied include the distance matrix, distance Laplacian, and distance signless Laplacian, in addition to the adjacency matrix, Laplacian, and signless Laplacian. Various sums of Kronecker products of nonnegative matrices are introduced to model the Cartesian and lexicographic products of digraphs. The Jordan canonical form is applied extensively to the analysis of spectra and eigenvectors. The analysis shows that Cartesian products provide a method…
Let $G=(V,A)$ be a digraph and $k\ge 1$ an integer. For $u,v\in V$, we say that the vertex $u$ distance $k$-dominate $v$ if the distance from $u$ to $v$ at most $k$. A set $D$ of vertices in $G$ is a distance $k$-dominating set if for each vertex of $V\setminus D$ is distance $k$-dominated by some vertex of $D$. The {\em distance $k$-domination number} of $G$, denoted by $γ_{k}(G)$, is the minimum cardinality of a distance $k$-dominating set of $G$. Generalized de Bruijn digraphs $G_B(n,d)$ and generalized Kautz digraphs $G_K(n,d)$ are good candidates for interconnection networks. Tian and Xu …
We introduce the graph parameter readability and study it as a function of the number of vertices in a graph. Given a digraph D, an injective overlap labeling assigns a unique string to each vertex such that there is an arc from x to y if and only if x properly overlaps y. The readability of D is the minimum string length for which an injective overlap labeling exists. In applications that utilize overlap digraphs (e.g., in bioinformatics), readability reflects the length of the strings from which the overlap digraph is constructed. We study the asymptotic behaviour of readability by casting i…
The Kautz digraphs $K(d,\ell)$ are a well-known family of dense digraphs, widely studied as a good model for interconnection networks. Closely related to these, the cyclic Kautz digraphs $CK(d,\ell)$ were recently introduced by Böhmová, Huemer and the author, and some of its distance-related parameters were fixed. In this paper we propose a new approach to the cyclic Kautz digraphs by introducing the family of the subKautz digraphs $sK(d,\ell)$, from where the cyclic Kautz digraphs can be obtained as line digraphs. This allows us to give exact formulas for the distance between any two vertices…
Let $D = (V, E)$ be a strongly connected and balanced digraph with vertex set $V$ and arc set $E.$ The classical distance $d_{ij}^D$ from $i$ to $j$ in $D$ is the length of a shortest directed path from $i$ to $j$ in $D.$ Let $L$ be the Laplacian matrix of $D$ and $ L^{\dagger} = ( l_{ij}^{\dagger} )$ be the Moore-Penrose inverse of $L.$ The resistance distance from $i$ to $j$ is then defined by $r_{ij}^D := l_{ii}^{\dagger } + l_{jj}^{\dagger } - 2 l_{ij}^{\dagger }.$ Let $\{ D_1, D_2, ...., D_k \}$ be a sequence of strongly connected balanced digraphs with $D_i \cap D_j$ having at most one v…
We propose to study a problem that arises naturally from both Topological Numbering of Directed Acyclic Graphs, and Additive Coloring (also known as Lucky Labeling). Let $D$ be a digraph and $f$ a labeling of its vertices with positive integers; denote by $S(v)$ the sum of labels over all neighbors of each vertex $v$. The labeling $f$ is called \emph{topological additive numbering} if $S(u) < S(v)$ for each arc $(u,v)$ of the digraph. The problem asks to find the minimum number $k$ for which $D$ has a topological additive numbering with labels belonging to $\{ 1, \ldots, k \}$, denoted by $η_t…
An integer distance digraph is the Cayley graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$ of the additive group $\mathbb{Z}$ of all integers with respect to a finite subset $S\subseteq\mathbb{Z}$. The domination ratio of $Γ(\mathbb{Z},S)$, defined as the minimum density of its dominating sets, is related to some number theory problems, such as tiling the integers and finding the maximum density of a set of integers with missing differences. We precisely determine the domination ratio of the integer distance graph $Γ(\mathbb{Z},\{1,2,\ldots,d-2,s\})$ for any integers $d$ and $s$ satisfying $d\ge2$ and $s\notin[0,d-2]$…
Using the two way distance, we introduce the concepts of weak metric dimension of a strongly connected digraph $Γ$. We first establish lower and upper bounds for the number of arcs in $Γ$ by using the diameter and weak metric dimension of $Γ$, and characterize all digraphs attaining the lower or upper bound. Then we study a digraph with weak metric dimension $1$ and classify all vertex-transitive digraphs having weak metric dimension $1$. Finally, all digraphs of order $n$ with weak metric dimension $n-1$ or $n-2$ are determined.
Distance matrices of graphs were introduced by Graham and Pollack in 1971 to study a problem in communications. Since then, there has been extensive research on the distance matrices of graphs -- a 2014 survey by Aouchiche and Hansen on spectra of distance matrices of graphs lists more than 150 references. In the last ten years, variants such as the distance Laplacian, the distance signless Laplacian, and the normalized distance Laplacian matrix of a graph have been studied. After a brief description of the early history of the distance matrix and its motivating problem, this survey focuses on…
Let $D = (V(D), A(D))$ be a digraph. A subset $S \subseteq V(D)$ is $k$-independent if the distance between every pair of vertices of $S$ is at least $k$, and it is $\ell$-absorbent if for every vertex $u$ in $V(D) \setminus S$ there exists $v \in S$ such that the distance from $u$ to $v$ is less than or equal to $\ell$. A $k$-kernel is a $k$-independent and $(k-1)$-absorbent set. A kernel is simply a $2$-kernel. A classical result due to Duchet states that if every directed cycle in a digraph $D$ has at least one symmetric arc, then $D$ has a kernel. We propose a conjecture generalizing this …
A random k-out mapping (digraph) on [n] is generated by choosing k random images of each vertex one at a time, subject to a "preferential attachment" rule: the current vertex selects an image i with probability proportional to a given parameter α= α(n) plus the number of times i has already been selected. Intuitively, the larger αgets, the closer the resulting k-out mapping is to the uniformly random k-out mapping. We prove that α= Θ(n^{1/2}) is the threshold for αgrowing "fast enough" to make the random digraph approach the uniformly random digraph in terms of the total variation distance. We…
A Langford sequence of order $m$ and defect $d$ can be identified with a labeling of the vertices of a path of order $2m$ in which each labeled from $d$ up to $d+m-1$ appears twice and in which the vertices that have been label with $k$ are at distance $k$. In this paper, we introduce two generalizations of this labeling that are related to distances.
We give bounds on the L(2,1)-labeling number of a simple graph in terms of its order and its maximum degree. We also describe an infinite class of graphs of which the elements have the highest L(2,1)-labeling numbers in terms of their maximum degrees of any known infinite class of graphs.
We give certain properties which are satisfied by the descendant set of a vertex in an infinite, primitive, distance transitive digraph of finite out-valency and provide a strong structure theory for digraphs satisfying these properties. In particular, we show that there are only countably many possibilities for the isomorphism type of such a descendant set, thereby confirming a conjecture of the first Author. As a partial converse, we show that certain related conditions on a countable digraph are sufficient for it to occur as the descendant set of a primitive, distance transitive digraph.
A graph $G$ is said to be distance magic if there exists a bijection $f:V\rightarrow \{1,2, \ldots , v\}$ and a constant {\sf k} such that for any vertex $x$, $\sum_{y\in N(x)} f(y) ={\sf k}$, where $N_(x)$ is the set of all neighbours of $x$. In this paper we shall study distance magic labelings of graphs obtained from four graph products: cartesian, strong, lexicographic, and cronecker. We shall utilise magic rectangle sets and magic column rectangles to construct the labelings.
A radio $k$-labeling of a connected graph $G$ is an assignment $c$ of non negative integers to the vertices of $G$ such that $$|c(x) - c(y)| \geq k+1 - d(x,y),$$ for any two vertices $x$ and $y$, $x\ne y$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between $x$ and $y$ in $G$. In this paper, we study radio labelings of distance graphs, i.e., graphs with the set $\Z$ of integers as vertex set and in which two distinct vertices $i, j \in \Z$ are adjacent if and only if $|i - j| \in D$.

Let $G$ be a complete $k$-partite simple undirected graph with parts of sizes $p_1\le p_2...\le p_k$. Let $P_j=\sum_{i=1}^jp_i$ for $j=1,...,k$. It is conjectured that $G$ has distance magic labeling if and only if $\sum_{i=1}^{P_j} (n-i+1)\ge j{{n+1}\choose{2}}/k$ for all $j=1,...,k$. The conjecture is proved for $k=4$, extending earlier results for $k=2,3$.
