We show that a suitable ring with a ``nice'' topology, in which convergent limits of units are units, is an \aleph_0-exchange ring. We generalize the argument to show that a semi-regular ring, R, with a ``nice'' topology, is a full exchange ring. Putting these results in the language of modules, we show that a cohopfian module with finite exchange has countable exchange. Also, all modules with Dedekind-finite, semi-regular endomorphism rings are full exchange modules.
We show that over any ring, the double Ext-orthogonal class to all flat Mittag-Leffler modules contains all countable direct limits of flat Mittag-Leffler modules. If the ring is countable, then the double orthogonal class consists precisely of all flat modules and we deduce, using a recent result of Šaroch and Trlifaj, that the class of flat Mittag-Leffler modules is not precovering in Mod-R unless R is right perfect.
We prove that every group ring of a non-abelian locally free group which is the union of an ascending sequence of free groups is primitive. In particular, every group ring of a countable non-abelian locally free group is primitive. In addition, by making use of the result, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for group rings of ascending HNN extensions of free groups to be primitive, which extends the known result for the countable case to the general cardinality case. In order to prove the main theorem, we state some graph-theoretic results and apply them to to Formanek's method.
It is shown that the skew field of Malcev-Neumann series of an ordered group frequently contains a free field of countable rank, i.e. the universal field of fractions of a free associative algebra of countable rank. This is an application of a criterion on embeddability of free fields on skew fields which are complete with respect to a valuation function, following K. Chiba. Other applications to skew Laurent series rings are discussed. Finally, embeddability questions on free fields of uncountable rank in Malcev-Neumann series rings are also considered.
Let $R$ be a ring. $R$ is called a right countably $Σ$-C2 ring if every countable direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C2 module. The following are equivalent for a ring $R$: (1) $R$ is a right countably $Σ$-C2 ring. (2) The column finite matrix ring $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{F}\mathbb{M}_{\mathbb{N}}(R)$ is a right C2 (or C3) ring. (3) Every countable direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C3 module. (4) Every projective right $R$-module is a C2 (or C3) module. (5) $R$ is a right perfect ring and every finite direct sum copies of $R_{R}$ is a C2 (or C3) module. This shows that right countably $Σ$-C2 rings a…
Let $R$ be a ring and denote by $\mathcal{FM}$ the class of all flat and Mittag-Leffler left $R$-modules. In \cite{BazzoniStovicek2} it is proved that, if $R$ is countable, the orthogonal class of $\mathcal{FM}$ consists of all cotorsion modules. In this note we extend this result to the class of all rings $R$ satisfying that each flat left $R$-module is filtered by totally ordered limits of projective modules. This class of rings contains all countable, left perfect and discrete valuation domains. Moreover, assuming that there do not exist inaccessible cardinals, we obtain that, over these ri…
By the Telescope Conjecture for Module Categories, we mean the following claim: "Let R be any ring and (A, B) be a hereditary cotorsion pair in Mod-R with A and B closed under direct limits. Then (A, B) is of finite type." We prove a modification of this conjecture with the word 'finite' replaced by 'countable'. We show that a hereditary cotorsion pair (A, B) of modules over an arbitrary ring R is generated by a set of strongly countably presented modules provided that B is closed under unions of well-ordered chains. We also characterize the modules in B and the countably presented modules in …
The existence of a maximal ideal in a general nontrivial commutative ring is tied together with the axiom of choice. Following Berardi, Valentini and thus Krivine but using the relative interpretation of negation (that is, as "implies 0 = 1") we show, in constructive set theory with minimal logic, how for countable rings one can do without any kind of choice and without the usual decidability assumption that the ring is strongly discrete (membership in finitely generated ideals is decidable). By a functional recursive definition we obtain a maximal ideal in the sense that the quotient ring is …
One of the many equivalent formulation of the Köthe's conjecture is the assertion that there exists no ring which contains two nil right ideals whose sum is not nil. We discuss several consequences of an observation that if the Koethe conjecture fails then there exists a counterexample in the form of a countable local subring of a suitable self-injective prime (von Neumann) regular ring.
In this paper we discuss several constructions that lead to new examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings. A characterization of the idempotents in the algebra defined by a 2-cocycle is given and used to prove some of the algebra's properties (the infinitesimal deformation case). From infinitesimal deformations we go to full deformations and prove that any formal deformation of a clean (exchange) ring is itself clean (exchange). Examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings arising from poset algebras are also discussed.
A Banaschewski function on a bounded lattice L is an antitone self-map of L that picks a complement for each element of L. We prove a set of results that include the following: (1) Every countable complemented modular lattice has a Banaschewski function with Boolean range, the latter being unique up to isomorphism. (2) Every (not necessarily unital) von Neumann regular ring R has a map e from R to the idempotents of R such that xR=e(x)R and e(xy)=e(x)e(xy)e(x) for all x,y in R. (3) Every sectionally complemented modular lattice with a ``Banaschewski trace'' (a weakening of the notion of a Bana…
Every reduced ring $R$ has a natural partial order defined by $a\le b$ if $a^2=ab$; it generalizes the natural order on a boolean ring. The article examines when $R$ is a lower semi-lattice in this order with examples drawn from weakly Baer rings (pp-rings) and rings of continuous functions. Locally connected spaces and basically disconnected spaces give rings $C(X)$ which are such lower semi-lattices. Liftings of countable orthogonal (in this order) sets over surjective ring homomorphisms are studied.
Let $R\to U$ be an associative ring epimorphism such that $U$ is a flat left $R$-module. Assume that the related Gabriel topology $\mathbb G$ of right ideals in $R$ has a countable base. Then we show that the left $R$-module $U$ has projective dimension at most $1$. Furthermore, the abelian category of left contramodules over the completion of $R$ at $\mathbb G$ fully faithfully embeds into the Geigle-Lenzing right perpendicular subcategory to $U$ in the category of left $R$-modules, and every object of the latter abelian category is an extension of two objects of the former one. We discuss co…
Two elements $a,b$ in a ring $R$ form a right coprime pair, written $\langle a,b\rangle$, if $aR+bR=R$. Right coprime pairs have shown to be quite useful in the study of left cotorsion or exchange rings. In this paper, we define the class of strongly right exchange rings in terms of descending chains of them. We show that they are semiregular and that this class of rings contains left injective, left pure-injective, left cotorsion, local and left continuous rings. This allows us to give a unified study of all these classes of rings in terms of the behaviour of descending chains of right coprim…
Dimensions like Gelfand, Krull, Goldie have an intrinsic role in the study of theory of rings and modules. They provide useful technical tools for studying their structure. In this paper we define one of the dimensions called couniserial dimension that measures how close a ring or module is to being uniform. Despite their different objectives, it turns out that there are certain common properties between the couniserial dimension and Krull dimension like each module having such a dimension contains a uniform submodule and has finite uniform dimension, among others. Like all dimensions, this is…
Let R be a ring, M a nonzero left R-module, X an infinite set, and E the endomorphism ring of the direct sum of copies of M indexed by X. Given two subrings S and S' of E, we will say that S is equivalent to S' if there exists a finite subset U of E such that the subring generated by S and U is equal to the subring generated by S' and U. We show that if M is simple and X is countable, then the subrings of E that are closed in the function topology and contain the diagonal subring of E (consisting of elements that take each copy of M to itself) fall into exactly two equivalence classes, with re…
We survey recent progress on the realization problem for von Neumann regular rings, which asks whether every countable conical refinement monoid can be realized as the monoid of isoclasses of finitely generated projective right $R$-modules over a von Neumann regular ring $R$.
We give a characterization of those abelian groups which are direct sums of cyclic groups and the Jacobson radical of their endomorphism rings are closed. A complete characterization of $p$-groups $A$ for which $(EndA,\mathcal T_L)$ is locally compact, where $\mathcal T_L$ is the Liebert topology on $EndA$, is given. We prove that if $A$ is a countable elementary $p$-group then $EndA$ has a non-admissible ring topology. To every functorial topology on $A$ a right bounded ring topology on $EndA$ is attached. By using this topology we construct on $EndA$ a non-metrizable and non-admissibe ring t…
An exchange ring $R$ is separative provided that for all finitely generated projective right $R$-modules $A$ and $B$, $A\oplus A\cong A\oplus B\cong B\oplus B\Longrightarrow A\cong B$. Let $R$ be a separative exchange ring in which $2$ is invertible, and let $a-a^3\in R$ be regular. We prove, in this note, that $a\in R$ is unit-regular if $R(1-a^2)R=Rr(a)={\ell}(a)$. An element $a$ in a ring $R$ is special clean if there exists an idempotent $e\in R$ such that $a-e\in R$ is a unit and $aR\bigcap eR=0$. Furthermore, we prove that $a\in R$ is special clean if $aR/ar(a^2), R/\big(aR+r(a)\big)$ ar…
Let $R$ be an exchange ring. We prove that the relative elementary subgroups $E_n(R,I)$ are normal in the general linear group $GL_n(R)$ if $n\geq 1$ and that the standard commutator formula $E_n(R,I)=[E_n(R),E_n(R,I)]=[E_n(R),C_n(R,I)]$ holds if $n\geq 3$. Moreover, we classify the subgroups of $GL_n(R)$ that are normalised by the elementary subgroup $E_n(R)$ in the case $n\geq 3$.
For a commutative ring $R$ with unit we show that the Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ of a graph $E$ embeds into $L_{2,R}$ precisely when $E$ is countable. Before proving this result we prove a generalised Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem for Leavitt path algebras over $R$.
We extend the notion of a purely infinite simple C*-algebra to the context of unital rings, and we study its basic properties, specially those related to K-Theory. For instance, if $R$ is a purely infinite simple ring, then $K_0(R)^+= K_0(R)$, the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective $R$-modules is isomorphic to the monoid obtained from $K_0(R)$ by adjoining a new zero element, and $K_1(R)$ is the abelianization of the group of units of $R$. We develop techniques of construction, obtaining new examples in this class in the case of von Neumann regular rings, and we com…
We introduce and investigate the so-called D-regularly nil clean rings by showing that these rings are, in fact, a non-trivial generalization of the classical von Neumann regular rings and of the strongly $π$-regular rings. Some other close relationships with certain well-known classes of rings such as $π$-regular rings, exchange rings, clean rings, nil-clean rings, etc., are also demonstrated. These results somewhat supply a recent publication of the author in Turk. J. Math. (2019) as well as they somewhat expand the important role of the two examples of nil-clean rings obtained by Ster in Li…
In previous work, the second author introduced a topology, for spaces of irreducible representations, that reduces to the classical Zariski topology over commutative rings but provides a proper refinement in various noncommutative settings. In this paper, a concise and elementary description of this refined Zariski topology is presented, under certain hypotheses, for the space of simple left modules over a ring R. Namely, if R is left noetherian (or satisfies the ascending chain condition for semiprimitive ideals), and if R is either a countable dimensional algebra (over a field) or a ring who…
It is proved that if A_p is a countable elementary abelian p-group, then: (i) The ring End(A_p) does not admit a nondiscrete locally compact ring topology. (ii) Under (CH) the simple ring End(A_p)/I, where I is the ideal of End(A_p) consisting of all endomorphisms with finite images, does not admit a nondiscrete locally compact ring topology. (iii) The finite topology on End(A_p) is the only second metrizable ring topology on it. Moreover, a characterization of completely simple endomorphism rings of the endomorphism rings of modules over commutative rings is also obtained.
We introduce a generalisation of Condition (K) to finitely separated graphs and show that it is equivalent to essential freeness of the associated partial action as well as the exchange property of any of the associated tame algebras. As a consequence, we can show that any tame separated graph algebra with the exchange property is separative.
General cryptographic schemes are presented where keys can be one-time or ephemeral. Processes for key exchange are derived. Public key cryptographic schemes based on the new systems are easily established. Authentication and signature schemes are implemented. The schemes are an advance on group ring techniques and are easily implemented but highly secure. They may be integrated with error-correcting coding schemes so that encryption/coding and decryption/decoding may be done simultaneously.

The assignment (nonstable K_0-theory), that to a ring R associates the monoid V(R) of Murray-von Neumann equivalence classes of idempotent infinite matrices with only finitely nonzero entries over R, extends naturally to a functor. We prove the following lifting properties of that functor: (1) There is no functor F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with normalized positive homomorphisms to exchange rings, such that VF is equivalent to the identity. (2) There is no functor F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with normalized positive embeddings to C*-algebras of real rank 0 (resp.,…
For any (unital) exchange ring $R$ whose finitely generated projective modules satisfy the separative cancellation property ($A\oplus A\cong A\oplus B\cong B\oplus B$ implies $A\cong B$), it is shown that all invertible square matrices over $R$ can be diagonalized by elementary row and column operations. Consequently, the natural homomorphism $GL_1(R) \to K_1(R)$ is surjective. In combination with a result of Huaxin Lin, it follows that for any separative, unital C*-algebra $A$ with real rank zero, the topological $K_1(A)$ is naturally isomorphic to the unitary group $U(A)$ modulo the connecte…
In this paper we present a new primitive for a key exchange protocol based on multivariate non-commutative polynomial rings, analogous to the classic Diffie-Hellman method. Our technique extends the proposed scheme of Boucher et al. from 2010. Their method was broken by Dubois and Kammerer in 2011, who exploited the Euclidean domain structure of the chosen ring. However, our proposal is immune against such attacks, without losing the advantages of non-commutative polynomial rings as outlined by Boucher et al. Moreover, our extension is not restricted to any particular ring, but is designed to …
Let R be a countable, principal ideal domain which is not a field and A be a countable R-algebra which is free as an R-module. Then we will construct an aleph_1-free R-module G of rank aleph_1 with endomorphism algebra End_RG=A . Clearly the result does not hold for fields. Recall that an R-module is aleph_1-free if all its countable submodules are free, a condition closely related to Pontryagin's theorem. This result has many consequences, depending on the algebra A in use. For instance, if we choose A=R, then clearly G is an indecomposable `almost free' module. The existence of such modules …
