We extend the relation between random matrices and free probability theory from the level of expectations to the level of fluctuations. We show how the concept of "second order freeness", which was introduced in Part I, allows one to understand global fluctuations of Haar distributed unitary random matrices. In particular, independence between the unitary ensemble and another ensemble goes in the large $N$ limit over into asymptotic second order freeness. Two important consequences of our general theory are: (i) we obtain a natural generalization of a theorem of Diaconis and Shahshahani to the case of several independent unitary matrices; (ii) we can show that global fluctuations in unitarily invariant multi-matrix models are not universal.
The asymptotic freeness of independent unitarily invariant $N\times N$ random matrices holds in expectation up to $O(N^{-2})$. An already known consequence is the infinitesimal freeness in expectation. We put in evidence another consequence for unitarily invariant random matrices: the almost sure asymptotic freeness of type $B$. As byproducts, we recover the asymptotic cyclic monotonicity, and we get the asymptotic conditional freeness. In particular, the eigenvector empirical spectral distribution of the sum of two randomly rotated random matrices converges towards the conditionally free conv…
We extend the relation between random matrices and free probability theory from the level of expectations to the level of all correlation functions (which are classical cumulants of traces of products of the matrices). We introduce the notion of "higher order freeness" and develop a theory of corresponding free cumulants. We show that two independent random matrix ensembles are free of arbitrary order if one of them is unitarily invariant. We prove R-transform formulas for second order freeness. Much of the presented theory relies on a detailed study of the properties of "partitioned permutati…
We show that real second order freeness appears in the study of Haar unitary and unitarily invariant random matrices when transposes are also considered. In particular we obtain the unexpected result that a unitarily invariant random matrix will be asymptotically free from its transpose.
We show that the limit laws of random matrices, whose entries are conditionally independent operator valued random variables having equal second moments proportional to the size of the matrices, are operator valued semicircular laws. Furthermore, we prove an operator valued analogue of Voiculescu's asymptotic freeness theorem. By replacing conditional independence with Boolean independence, we show that the limit laws of the random matrices are Operator-valued Bernoulli laws.
We demonstrate the asymptotic real second order freeness of Haar distributed orthogonal matrices and an independent ensemble of random matrices. Our main result states that if we have two independent ensembles of random matrices with a real second order limit distribution and one of them is invariant under conjugation by an orthogonal matrix, then the two ensembles are asymptotically real second order free. This captures the known examples of asymptotic real second order freeness introduced by Redelmeier [R1, R2].
We extend the relation between random matrices and free probability theory from the level of expectations to the level of fluctuations. We introduce the concept of "second order freeness" and derive the global fluctuations of Gaussian and Wishart random matrices by a general limit theorem for second order freeness. By introducing cyclic Fock space, we also give an operator algebraic model for the fluctuations of our random matrices in terms of the usual creation, annihilation, and preservation operators. We show that orthogonal families of Gaussian and Wishart random matrices are asymptoticall…
We show that the partial transposes of complex Wishart random matrices are asymptotically free. We also investigate regimes where the number of blocks is fixed but the size of the blocks increases. This gives a example where the partial transpose produces freeness at the operator level. Finally we investigate the case of real Wishart matrices.
We characterize the limiting second order distributions of certain independent complex Wigner and deterministic matrices using Voiculescu's notions of freeness over the diagonal. If the Wigner matrices are Gaussian, Mingo and Speicher's notion of second order freeness gives a universal rule, in terms of marginal first and second order distribution. We adapt and reformulate this notion for operator-valued random variables in a second order probability space. The Wigner matrices are assumed to be permutation invariant with null pseudo variance and the deterministic matrices to satisfy a restrict…
We present a genus expansion-type expression for the expected values of products of traces of expressions involving Haar-distributed orthogonal matrices. As with other real genus expansions, nonorientable surfaces appear, in addition to the orientable surfaces of the complex expansion. We use this expression to demonstrate that independent random matrices which are orthogonally in general position, such as matrices whose distributions are orthogonally invariant, are asymptotically real second-order free.
Voiculescu's freeness emerges in computing the asymptotic of spectra of polynomials on $N\times N$ random matrices with eigenspaces in generic positions: they are randomly rotated with a uniform unitary random matrix $U_N$. In this article we elaborate on the previous point by proposing a random matrix model, which we name the Vortex model, where $U_N$ has the law of a uniform unitary random matrix conditioned to leave invariant one deterministic vector $v_N$. In the limit $N \to +\infty$, we show that $N\times N$ matrices randomly rotated by the matrix $U_N$ are asymptotically conditionally f…
In this paper, we are interested in sequences of q-tuple of N-by-N random matrices having a strong limiting distribution (i.e. given any non-commutative polynomial in the matrices and their conjugate transpose, its normalized trace and its norm converge). We start with such a sequence having this property, and we show that this property pertains if the q-tuple is enlarged with independent unitary Haar distributed random matrices. Besides, the limit of norms and traces in non-commutative polynomials in the enlarged family can be computed with reduced free product construction. This extends resu…
We introduce real second-order freeness in second-order noncommutative probability spaces. We demonstrate that under this definition, three real models of random matrices, namely real Ginibre matrices, Gaussian orthogonal matrices, and real Wishart matrices, are asymptotically second-order free. These ensembles do not satisfy the complex definition of second-order freeness satisfied by their complex analogues. We use a combinatorial approach to the matrix calculations similar to the genus expansion for complex random matrices, but in which nonorientable surfaces appear, demonstrating the commo…
We prove several results asserting that the action of a Banach-Lie group on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic sections of a holomorphic Hilbert space bundle over a complex Banach manifold is multiplicity free. These results require the existence of compatible antiholomorphic bundle maps and certain multiplicity freeness assumptions for stabilizer groups. For the group action on the base, the notion of an $(S,σ)$-weakly visible action (generalizing T.Koboyashi's visible actions) provides an effective way to express the assumptions in an economical fashion. In particular, we derive a version for gro…
It has been shown by Voiculescu that important classes of square independent random matrices are asymptotically free, where freeness is a noncommutative analog of classical independence. Recently, we introduced the concept of matricial freeness, which is similar to freeness in free probability, but it also has some matricial features. Using this new concept of noncommutative independence, we described the asymptotics of blocks and symmetric blocks of certain classes of independent random matrices. In this paper, we present the main results obtained in this framework, concentrating on the ensem…
Applying the concept of matricial freeness which generalizes freeness in free probability, we have recently studied asymptotic joint distributions of symmetric blocks of Gaussian random matrices (Gaussian Symmetric Block Ensemble). This approach gives a block refinement of the fundamental result of Voiculescu on asymptotic freeness of independent Gaussian random matrices. In this paper, we show that this framework is natural for constructing a random matrix model for free Meixner laws. We also demonstrate that the ensemble of independent matrices of this type is asymptotically conditionally fr…
We show that an independent family of uniformly distributed random permutation matrices is asymptotically *-free from an independent family of square complex Gaussian matrices and from an independent family of complex Wishart matrices, and that in both cases the convergence in *-distribution actually holds almost surely. An immediate consequence is that, if the rows of a GUE matrix are randomly permuted, then the resulting (non self-adjoint) random matrix has a *-distribution which is asymptotically circular; similarly, a random permutation of the rows of a complex Wishart matrix results in a …
We consider the limiting distribution of $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ (and more general expressions), where $A_N$ and $B_N$ are $N \times N$ matrices with entries in a unital C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal B$ which have limiting $\mathcal B$-valued distributions as $N \to \infty$, and $U_N$ is a $N \times N$ Haar distributed quantum unitary random matrix with entries independent from $\mathcal B$. Under a boundedness assumption, we show that $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ are asymptotically free with amalgamation over $\mathcal B$. Moreover, this also holds in the stronger infinitesimal sense of Belinschi-Shlyak…
A fundamental result of free probability theory due to Voiculescu and subsequently refined by many authors states that conjugation by independent Haar-distributed random unitary matrices delivers asymptotic freeness. In this paper we exhibit many other systems of random unitary matrices that, when used for conjugation, lead to freeness. We do so by first proving a general result asserting "asymptotic liberation" under quite mild conditions, and then we explain how to specialize these general results in a striking way by exploiting Hadamard matrices. In particular, we recover and generalize res…
We introduce and study `matricial circular systems' of operators which play the role of matricial counterparts of circular operators. They describe the asymptotic joint *-distributions of blocks of independent block-identically distributed Gaussian random matrices with respect to partial traces. Using these operators, we introduce `circular free Meixner distributions' as the non-Hermitian counterparts of free Meixner distributions and construct for them a random matrix model. Our approach is based on the concept of matricial freeness applied to operators on Hilbert spaces. It is closely relate…
We prove that independent rectangular random matrices, when embedded in a space of larger square matrices, are asymptotically free with amalgamation over a commutative finite dimensional subalgebra $D$ (under an hypothesis of unitary invariance). Then we consider elements of a finite von Neumann algebra containing $D$, which have kernel and range projection in $D$. We associate them a free entropy with the microstates approach, and a free Fisher's information with the conjugate variables approach. Both give rise to optimization problems whose solutions involve freeness with amalgamation over $…
We study the asymptotics of sums of matricially free random variables called random pseudomatrices, and we compare it with that of random matrices with block-identical variances. For objects of both types we find the limit joint distributions of blocks and give their Hilbert space realizations, using operators called `matricially free Gaussian operators'. In particular, if the variance matrices are symmetric, the asymptotics of symmetric blocks of random pseudomatrices agrees with that of symmetric random blocks. We also show that blocks of random pseudomatrices are `asymptotically matricially…
Let A_1,A_2,...,A_s be a finite sequence of (not necessarily disjoint, or even distinct) non-empty sets of positive integers satisfying a certain condition. It is shown that an independent family U_1,U_2,...,U_s of random NxN permutation matrices with cycle lengths restricted to A_1,A_2,...,A_s, respectively, converges in *-distribution as N goes to infinity to to a *-free family u_1,u_2,...,u_s of non-commutative random variables with each u_r a Haar unitary (if A_r is an infinite set) or a d_r-Haar unitary (if A_r is a finite set and d_r=sup A_r).Under an additional assumption on the sets A_…
We study limit distributions of independent random matrices as well as limit joint distributions of their blocks under normalized partial traces composed with classical expectation. In particular, we are concerned with the ensemble of symmetric blocks of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free from diagonal deterministic matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded. This class contains symmetric blocks of unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices whose asymptotic distributions are compactly supported probability measures on the real line.…
We show that finite rank perturbations of certain random matrices fit in the framework of infinitesimal (type B) asymptotic freeness. This can be used to explain the appearance of free harmonic analysis (such as subordination functions appearing in additive free convolution) in computations of outlier eigenvalues in spectra of such matrices.
Let $M$ be a $B$-probability space. Assume that $B$ itself is a $D$-probability space; then $M$ can be viewed as $D$-probability space as well. Let $X$ be in $M$. We look at the question of relating the properties of $X$ as $B$-valued random variable to its properties as $D$-valued random variable. We characterize freeness of $X$ from $B$ with amalgamation over $D$: (a) in terms of a certain factorization condition linking the $B$-valued and $D$-valued cumulants of $X$, and (b) for $D$ finite-dimensional, in terms of linking the $B$-valued and the $D$-valued Fisher information of $X$. We give …
The concept of freeness was introduced by Voiculescu in the context of operator algebras. Later it was observed that it is also relevant for large random matrices. We will show how the combination of various free probability results with a linearization trick allows to address successfully the problem of determining the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of general selfadjoint polynomials in independent random matrices.
We study Haar unitary random matrices with permuted entries. For a sequence of permutations $\left(σ_N\right)_N$, where $σ_N$ acts on $N\times N$ matrices we identify conditions under which the $\ast$--distribution of permuted Haar unitary matrices $U_N^{σ_N}$ is asymptotically circular and free from the unpermuted sequence $U_N$. We show that this convergence takes place in the almost sure sense. Moreover we show that our conditions on the sequence of permutations are generic in the sense that are almost surely satisfied by a sequence of random permutations.
The paper presents conditions on entry permutations that induce asymptotic freeness when acting on Gaussian random matrices. The class of permutations described includes the matrix transpose, as well as entry permutations relevant in Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Physics.
We investigate certain matrices composed of mixed, second-order moments of unitaries. The unitaries are taken from C*-algebras with moments taken with respect to traces, or, alternatively, from matrix algebras with the usual trace. These sets are of interest in light of a theorem of E. Kirchberg about Connes' embedding problem.
This paper continues the authors' work on the question of unitary equivalence of matrices with entries in the complex-valued functions of a topological space (matrices over spaces). Specifically, we here consider the question of unitary equivalence for pairs of normal matrices over a space that share a common characteristic polynomial that can be globally factored into distinct linear factors. We show that such a matrix is diagonalizable if and only if the first Chern classes of its eigenbundles all vanish and derive as an application that all such matrices over $\mathbb{C}P^m$ are diagonaliza…
Let A and B be normal matrices with coefficients that are continuous complex-valued functions on a topological space X that has the homotopy type of a CW complex, and suppose these matrices have the same distinct eigenvalues at each point of X. We use obstruction theory to establish a necessary and sufficient condition for A and B to be unitarily equivalent. We also determine bounds on the number of possible unitary equivalence classes in terms of cohomological invariants of X.
Chien, Liu, Nakazato, and Tam proved that all n by n classical Toeplitz matrices (one-level Toeplitz matrices) are unitarily similar to complex symmetric matrices via two types of unitary matrices and the type of the unitary matrices only depends on the parity of n. In this paper, we extend their result to multilevel Toeplitz matrices that any multilevel Toeplitz matrix is unitarily similar to a complex symmetric matrix. We provide a method to construct the unitary matrices that uniformly turn any multilevel Toeplitz matrix to a complex symmetric matrix by taking tensor products of these two t…
We show that whenever a contractive $k$-tuple $T$ on a finite dimensional space $H$ has a unitary dilation, then for any fixed degree $N$ there is a unitary $k$-tuple $U$ on a finite dimensional space so that $q(T) = P_H q(U) |_H$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $N$.
In this note, we consider quantum correlations of bipartite systems having a slight interaction, and reinterpret Tsirelson's problem (and hence Kirchberg's and Connes's conjectures) in terms of finite-dimensional asymptotically commuting positive operator valued measures. We also consider the systems of asymptotically commuting unitary matrices and formulate the Stronger Kirchberg Conjecture.
