We prove that if X is any 2-regular projective scheme (in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford) then X is "small". This means that if L is a linear space and Y:= L\cap X is finite, then Y is "linearly independent" in the sense that the dimension of the linear span of Y is 1+deg Y. The converse is true and well-known for finite schemes, but false in general. The main result of this paper is that the converse, "small implies 2-regular", is also true for reduced projective schemes (algebraic sets). This is proven by means of a delicate geometric analysis, leading to a complete classification: we show that the components of a small algebraic set are varieties of minimal degree, meeting in a particularly simple way. From the classification one can show that if X is 2-regular, then so is X_{red}, and so also is the projection of X from any point of X.
Our results extend the Del Pezzo-Bertini classification of varieties of minimal degree, the characterization of these as the varieties of regularity 2 by Eisenbud-Goto, and the construction of 2-regular square-free monomial ideals by Fröberg.
A variety of minimal degree is one of the basic objects in projective algebraic geometry and has been classified and characterized in many aspects. On the other hand, there are also minimal objects in the category of higher secant varieties, and their algebraic and geometric structures seem to share many similarities with those of varieties of minimal degree. We prove in this paper that higher secant varieties of minimal degree have determinantal presentation of two types, i.e. scroll type and Veronese type. Our result generalizes the del Pezzo-Bertini classification for varieties of minimal d…
We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two.
We study the arithmetical ranks and the cohomological dimensions of an infinite class of Cohen-Macaulay varieties of minimal degree. Among these we find, on the one hand, infinitely many set-theoretic complete intersections, on the other hand examples where the arithmetical rank is arbitrarily greater than the codimension.
We compute the minimal log discrepancies of determinantal varieties of square matrices, and more generally of pairs $\bigl(D^k,\sum α_i D^{k_i}\bigr)$ consisting of a determinantal variety (of square matrices) and an $\mathbb R$-linear sum of determinantal subvarieties. Our result implies the semicontinuity conjecture for minimal log discrepancies of such pairs. For these computations, we use the description of minimal log discrepancies via codimensions of cylinders in the space of jets; this necessitates the computations of an explicit generator for the canonical differential forms and the Na…
We investigate families of minimal rational curves on Schubert varieties, their Bott-Samelson desingularizations, and their generalizations constructed by Nicolas Perrin in the minuscule case. In particular, we describe the minimal families on small resolutions of minuscule Schubert varieties.
The aim of the present exposition is to investigate varieties of almost minimal degree and of low codimension, in particular their Betti diagrams. Here minimal degree is defined as $°X = \codim X + 2.$ We describe the structure of the minimal free resolution of a variety $X$ of almost minimal degree of $\codim X \leq 4$ by listing the possible Betti diagrams. The most surprising fact is, that the non-arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay case of varieties of almost minimal degree can occur only in small dimensions (cf. Section 2 for the precise statements). Our main technical tool is a result shown by…
It is well known that one can find a rational normal curve in $\mathbb P^n$ through $n+3$ general points. We prove a generalization of this to higher dimensional varieties, showing that smooth varieties of minimal degree can be interpolated through points and linear spaces.
We translate the equivariant decomposition theorem (in the case of a proper morphism of toric varieties) in to the language of combinatorially defined ``shifted minimal complexes''.
We classify the Ulrich vector bundles of arbitrary rank on smooth projective varieties of minimal degree. In the process, we prove the stability of the sheaves of relative differentials on rational scrolls.
We describe the Minimal Model Program in the family of $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein projective horospherical varieties, by studying a family of polytopes defined from the moment polytope of a Cartier divisor of the variety we begin with. In particular, we generalize the results on MMP in toric varieties due to M. Reid, and we complete the results on MMP in spherical varieties due to M. Brion in the case of horospherical varieties.
In a previous work, we described the Minimal Model Program in the family of $\Qbb$-Gorenstein projective horospherical varieties, by studying certain continuous changes of moment polytopes of polarized horospherical varieties. Here, we summarize the results of the previous work and we explain how to generalize them in order to describe the Log Minimal Model Program for pairs $(X,\D)$ when $X$ is a projective horospherical variety.
We give a sufficient condition for the termination of flips. Then we discuss a semi-stable minimal model program for varieties with (numerically) trivial canonical divisor as an application. We also treat a slight refinement of dlt blow-ups.
The degree of a projective subscheme has an upper bound in term of the codimension and the reduction number. If a projective variety has an almost maximal degree, that is, the degree equals to the upper bound minus one, then its Betti table has been described explicitly. We build on this work by showing that for most of such varieties, the defining ideals are componentwise linear and in particular the componentwise linearity is suitable for classifying the Betti tables of such varieties. As an application, we compute the Betti table of all varieties with almost maximal degree and componentwise…
We give an introduction to the theory of varieties of minimal rational tangents, emphasizing its aspect as a fusion of algebraic geometry and differential geometry, more specifically, a fusion of Mori geometry of minimal rational curves and Cartan geometry of cone structures.
We consider a class of stable smoothable n-dimensional varieties, the analogs of stable curves. Assuming the minimal model program in dimension n+1, we prove that this class is bounded. From Kollar's method of constructing projective moduli spaces we get as a corollary that minimal model program in dimension n+1 implies the existence of a projective coarse moduli space for stable smoothable n-folds.
We prove an explicit degree formula for certain unitary Deligne-Lusztig varieties. Combining with an alternative degree formula in terms of Schubert calculus, we deduce several algebraic combinatorial identities which may be of independent interest.
We prove that the Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to elements of the Weyl group which are of minimal length in their twisted class are affine. Our proof differs from the proof of He and Orlik-Rapoport and it is inspired by the case of regular elements, which correspond to the varieties involved in Broué's conjectures.
In this paper, we study principally polarized abelian varieties $X$ of dimension $g$ that contain a curve $ν:C\to X$ such that the class of $C$ is $m$ times the minimal class. Welters introduced the formalism of stable pairs to handle this problem in the case $m=2$. We generalize the results of Welters and construct families of principally polarized abelian varieties for any $m$ and compute the dimension of the locus of these abelian varieties.
We formulate the equivalence problem, in the sense of E. Cartan, for families of minimal rational curves on uniruled projective manifolds. An important invariant of this equivalence problem is the variety of minimal rational tangents. We study the case when varieties of minimal rational tangents at general points form an isotrivial family. The main question in this case is for which projective variety $Z$, a family of minimal rational curves with $Z$-isotrivial varieties of minimal rational tangents is locally equivalent to the flat model. We show that this is the case when $Z$ satisfies certa…
In this paper we compute the dimension of all the higher secant varieties to the Segre-Veronese embedding of $\mathbb{P}^n\times \mathbb{P}^1$ via the section of the sheaf $\mathcal{O}(a,b)$ for any $n,a,b\in \mathbb{Z}^+$. We relate this result to the Grassmann Defectivity of Veronese varieties and we classify all the Grassmann $(1,s-1)$-defective Veronese varieties.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over ${\bf C}$ of dimension $n$ and $π\colon {\bf C}^n \rightarrow A$ be the complex uniformisation. Let $X$ be an unbounded subset of ${\bf C}^n$ definable in a suitable o-minimal structure. We give a description of the Zariski closure of $π(X)$.
To complete the classification theory and the structure theory of varieties of almost minimal degree, that is of non-degenerate irreducible projective varieties whose degree exceeds the codimension by precisely 2, a natural approach is to investigate simple projections of varieties of minimal degree. Let $\tilde X \subset {\mathbb P}^{r+1}_K$ be a variety of minimal degree and of codimension at least 2, and consider $X_p = π_p (\tilde X) \subset {\mathbb P}^r_K$ where $p \in {\mathbb P}^{r+1}_K \backslash \tilde X$. By \cite{B-Sche}, it turns out that the cohomological and local properties of …
We establish the Minimal Model Program for arithmetic threefolds whose residue characteristics are greater than five. In doing this, we generalize the theory of global $F$-regularity to mixed characteristic and identify certain stable sections of adjoint line bundles. Finally, by passing to graded rings, we generalize a special case of Fujita's conjecture to mixed characteristic.
We establish a, and conjecture further, relationship between the existence of subvarieties representing minimal cohomology classes on principally polarized abelian varieties, and the generic vanishing of certain sheaf cohomology. The main ingredient is the Generic Vanishing criterion of math.AG/0608127, based on the Fourier-Mukai transform.
Let f:X->Y be an algebraic fiber space such that the general fiber has a good minimal model. We show that if f is the Iitaka fibration or if f is the Albanese map of relative dimension no more than three, then X has a good minimal model.
In this note we propose to show that the Kähler-Ricci flow fits naturally within the context of the Minimal Model Program for projective varieties. In particular we show that the flow detects, in finite time, the contraction theorem of any extremal ray and we analyze the singularities of the metric in the case of divisorial contractions for varieties of general type. In case one has a smooth minimal model of general type (i.e., the canonical bundle is nef and big), we show infinite time existence and analyze the singularities.
For a connected, simply-connected complex simple algebraic group $G$, we examine a class of Hessenberg varieties associated with the minimal nilpotent orbit. In particular, we compute the Poincaré polynomials and irreducible components of these varieties in Lie type $A$. Furthermore, we show these Hessenberg varieties to be GKM with respect to the action of a maximal torus $T\subseteq G$. The corresponding GKM graphs are then explicitly determined. Finally, we present the ordinary and $T$-equivariant cohomology rings of our varieties as quotients of those of the flag variety.
Let X be the moduli of SL(3,C) representations of a rank r free group. In this paper we determine minimal generators of the coordinate ring of X. This at once gives explicit global coordinates for the moduli and determines the dimension of the moduli's minimal affine embedding. Along the way, we utilize results concerning the moduli of r-tuples of matrices in gl(3,C). Consequently, we also state general invariant theoretic correspondences between the coordinate rings of the moduli of r-tuples of elements in gl(n,C), sl(n,C), and SL(n,C).
We prove a stronger version of a criterion of rationality given by Ionescu and Russo. We use this stronger version to define an invariant for rational varieties (we call it rationality degree), and we classify rational varieties for small values of the invariant.
We construct klt projective varieties with ample canonical class and the smallest known volume. We also find exceptional klt Fano varieties with the smallest known anticanonical volume. We conjecture that our examples have the smallest volume in every dimension, and we give low-dimensional evidence for that. In order to improve on earlier examples, we are forced to consider weighted hypersurfaces that are not quasi-smooth. We show that our Fano varieties are exceptional by computing their global log canonical threshold (or $α$-invariant) exactly; it is extremely large, roughly $2^{2^n}$ in dim…
We introduce and study a new way to catagorize supersingular abelian varieties defined over a finite field by classifying them as fully maximal, mixed, or fully minimal. The type of $A$ depends on the normalized Weil numbers of $A$ and its twists. We analyze these types for supersingular abelian varieties and curves under conditions on the automorphism group. In particular, we present a complete analysis of these properties for supersingular elliptic curves and supersingular abelian surfaces in arbitrary characteristic, and for a one-dimensional family of supersingular curves of genus $3$ in c…
The Borel-Weil-Bott theorem describes the cohomology of line bundles over flag varieties. Here, one generalizes this theorem to a wider class of projective varieties : the wonderful varieties of minimal rank.
We study the minimally supported representations of quantizations of Gieseker moduli spaces. We relate them to $\operatorname{SL}_n$-equivariant D-modules on the nilpotent cone of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$ and to minimally supported representations of type A rational Cherednik algebras. Our main result is character formulas for minimally supported representations of quantized Gieseker moduli spaces.
Given a subspace L of a vector space V, the Kalman variety consists of all matrices of V that have a nonzero eigenvector in L. Ottaviani and Sturmfels described minimal equations in the case that dim L = 2 and conjectured minimal equations for dim L = 3. We prove their conjecture and describe the minimal free resolution in the case that dim L = 2, as well as some related results. The main tool is an exact sequence which involves the coordinate rings of these Kalman varieties and the normalizations of some related varieties. We conjecture that this exact sequence exists for all values of dim L.
We determine the geometric structure of a minimal projective threefold having two `independent and commutative' automorphisms of positive topological entropy, and generalize this result to higher-dimensional smooth minimal pairs (X, G). As a consequence, we give an effective lower bound for the first dynamical degree of these automorphisms of X fitting the `boundary case'.
We prove a conjecture by Kawaguchi-Silverman on arithmetic and dynamical degrees, for self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties. Moreover, we determine the set of the arithmetic degrees of orbits and the (first) dynamical degrees of self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties.
We study the subvariety of integrable 1-forms in a finite dimensional vector space $W \subset Ω^1(\mathbb C^n,0)$. We prove that the irreducible components with dimension comparable with the rank of $W$ are of minimal degree.
The image of the higher Gauss map for a projective variety is discussed. The notion of higher Gauss maps here was introduced by Fyodor L. Zak as a generalization of both ordinary Gauss maps and conormal maps. The main result is a closed formula for the degree of those images of Veronese varieties. This yields a generalization of a classical formula by George Boole on the degree of the dual varieties of Veronese varieties in 1844. As an application of our formula, degree bounds for higher Gauss map images of Veronese varieties are given.
