We establish the Minimal Model Program for arithmetic threefolds whose residue characteristics are greater than five. In doing this, we generalize the theory of global $F$-regularity to mixed characteristic and identify certain stable sections of adjoint line bundles. Finally, by passing to graded rings, we generalize a special case of Fujita's conjecture to mixed characteristic.
In this paper, we prove BG-type inequality conjecture for threefolds in the title. In particular, there exist Bridgeland stability conditions on these threefolds.
We investigate the globally generated vector bundles on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with the first Chern class at most 2. We classify all the globally generated vector bundles of an arbitrary rank on quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate the globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds of codimension 2.
In this paper, we show that every invertible subsheaf of the cotangent bundle of a smooth globally $F$-regular threefold of characteristic $p>3$ has Iitaka dimension less than or equal to one.
We explicitly construct the Kummer variety associated to the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 that is defined over a field of characteristic not equal to 2 and has a Weierstraß point defined over the same field. We also construct homogeneous quartic polynomials on the Kummer variety and show that they represent the duplication map.
We review the construction of families of projective varieties, in particular Calabi--Yau threefolds, as quasilinear sections in weighted flag varieties. We also describe a construction of tautological orbi-bundles on these varieties, which may be of interest in heterotic model building.
In this article, we summarize combinatorial description of complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in Hibi toric varieties. Such Calabi-Yau threefolds have at worst conifold singularities, and are often smoothable to non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds. We focus on such non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard number one, and illustrate the calculation of topological invariants, using new motivating examples.
We investigate the existence of globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 with $c_1\leq 3$ on a smooth quadric threefold and determine their Chern classes. As an automatic consequence, every rank 2 globally generated vector bundle on $Q$ with $c_1=3$ is an odd instanton up to twist.
In this paper, we show that projective globally $F$-regular threefolds, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 11$, are rationally chain connected.
We give a complete classification of globally generated vector bundles of rank 3 on a smooth quadric threefold with $c_1\leq 2$ and extend the result to arbitrary higher rank case. We also investigate the existence of globally generated indecomposable vector bundles, and give the sufficient and necessary conditions on numeric data of vector bundles for indecomposability.
We compute the integral homology (including torsion), the topological K-theory, and the Hodge structure on cohomology of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces and complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The methods are purely topological.
We classify globally generated vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ with small first Chern class, i.e. $c_1= (a,b)$, $a+b \leq 3$. Our main method is to investigate the associated smooth curves to globally generated vector bundles via the Hartshorne-Serre construction.
These are notes from talks of the authors on some explicit examples of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds which are parametrised by a Shimura variety. We briefly review the periods of Calabi-Yau threefolds and we discuss a recent result on Picard-Fuchs equations for threefolds which are hypersurfaces with many automorphisms. Next various examples of families parametrised by Shimura varieties are given. Most of these are due to J.C. Rohde. The examples with an automorphism of order three are given in some detail. We recall that such families do not have maximally unipotent monodromy and that the…
We investigate versions of the Shafarevich conjecture, as proved for curves and abelian varieties by Faltings, for other classes of varieties. We first obtain analogues for certain Fano threefolds. We use these results to prove the Shafarevich conjecture for smooth sextic surfaces, which appears to be the first non-trivial result in the literature on the arithmetic of such surfaces. Moreover, we exhibit certain moduli stacks of Fano varieties which are not hyperbolic, which allows us to show that the analogue of the Shafarevich conjecture does not always hold for Fano varieties. Our results al…
We construct an explicit complex smooth Fano threefold with Picard number 1, index 1, and degree 10 (also known as a Gushel-Mukai threefold) and prove that it is not rational by showing that its intermediate Jacobian has a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action. Along the way, we construct Gushel-Mukai varieties of various dimensions with rather large (finite) automorphism groups. The starting point of all these constructions is an Eisenbud-Popescu-Walter sextic with a faithful $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbf{F}_{11}) $-action discovered by the second author in 2013.
In this article, we construct a Hecke-equivariant Chow motive whose realizations equal intersection cohomology of Siegel threefolds with regular algebraic coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to define Grothendieck motives for Siegel modular forms.
We use Batyrev-Borisov's formula for the generating function of stringy Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as complete intersections in toric varieties in order to get closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds in five-dimensional ambient spaces. These expressions involve counts of lattice points on faces of associated Cayley polytopes. Using the same techniques, similar expressions may be obtained for higher dimensional varieties realized as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces.
In their paper Livné and Yui (math.AG/0304497) discuss several examples of non-rigid Calabi-Yau varieties which admit semi-stable K3-fibrations with 6 singular fibres over a base which is a rational modular curve. They also establish the modularity of the L-function of these examples. The purpose of this note is to point out that the examples which were listed in their paper, but which do not lead to semi-stable fibrations, are still modular in the sense that their L-function is associated to modular forms. We treat the case associated to the group Gamma_1(7) in detail, but our technique also …
The aim of this paper is to find all algebraic threefolds admitting quasi-regular Poisson structure. There are three types of such varieties: abelian varieties, smooth flat conic bundles over abelian surfaces and quotients of the product of a curve and a symplectic surface by a finite group.
We construct families of non-toric $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal Fano ($\mathbb{Q}$-Fano) threefolds of codimension $\geq 20$ corresponding to 54 mutation classes of rigid maximally mutable Laurent polynomials. From the point of view of mirror symmetry, they are the highest codimension (non-toric) $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties for which we can currently establish the Fano/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence. We construct 46 additional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano threefolds with codimensions of new examples ranging between 19 and 10. Some of these varieties will be presented as toric complete intersections, a…
A conjecture of Orlov predicts that derived equivalent smooth projective varieties over a field have isomorphic Chow motives. The conjecture is known for curves, and was recently observed for surfaces by Huybrechts. In this paper we focus on threefolds over perfect fields, and unconditionally secure results, which are implied by Orlov's conjecture, concerning the geometric coniveau filtration, and abelian varieties attached to smooth projective varieties.
We show that polarized endomorphisms of rationally connected threefolds with at worst terminal singularities are equivariantly built up from those on Q-Fano threefolds, Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces and P^1. Similar results are obtained for polarized endomorphisms of uniruled threefolds and fourfolds. As a consequence, we show that every smooth Fano threefold with a polarized endomorphism of degree > 1, is rational.
This paper proves the following converse to a theorem of Mumford: Let $A$ be a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension five, whose theta divisor has a unique singular point, and suppose that the multiplicity of the singular point is three. Then $A$ is isomorphic as a principally polarized abelian variety to the intermediate Jacobian of a smooth cubic threefold. The method of proof is to analyze the possible singularities of the theta divisor of $A$, and eventually to show that $A$ is the Prym variety of a possibly singular plane quintic.
This paper extends joint work with R. Friedman to show that the closure of the locus of intermediate Jacobians of smooth cubic threefolds, in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav's) of dimension five, is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav's whose theta divisor has a point of multiplicity three or more. This paper also gives a sharp bound on the multiplicity of a point on the theta divisor of an irreducible ppav of dimension less than or equal to five; for dimensions four and five, this improves the bound due to J. Kollár, R. Smith-R. Varley, and L. Ein-R…
In this note, an overview of Calabi-Yau varieties in positive characteristic is presented. Although Calabi-Yau varieties in characteristic zero are unobstructed, there are examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic which cannot be lifted to characteristic zero, although one-dimensional and two-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties, i.e., elliptic curves and K3 surfaces, are all liftable to characteristic zero. In this respect, Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic are interesting in view of deformation theory and they are still very mysterious.
An inductive approach to classifying toric Fano varieties is given. As an application of this technique, we present a classification of the toric Fano threefolds with at worst canonical singularities. Up to isomorphism, there are 674,688 such varieties.
The affine cancellation problem, which asks whether complex affine varieties with isomorphic cylinders are themselves isomorphic, has a positive solution for two dimensional varieties whose coordinate rings are unique factorization domains, in particular for the affine plane, but counterexamples are found within normal surfaces Danielewski surfaces and factorial threefolds of logarithmic Kodaira dimension equal to 1. The latter are therefore remote from the affine three-space, the first unknown case where the base of one cylinder is an affine space. Locally trivial Ga-actions play a significan…
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective threefold Y that admits a non-constant map to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of Y: in all relevant cases the minimal model program leads to a fiber space whose fibration facto…
We investigate to what extent an abelian variety over a finite field can be lifted to one in characteristic zero with small Mumford-Tate group. We prove that supersingular abelian surfaces, respectively threefolds, can be lifted to ones isogenous to a square, respectively product, of elliptic curves. On the other hand, we show that supersingular abelian threefolds cannot be lifted to one isogenous to the cube of an elliptic curve over the Witt vectors.
Over a field $k$, we study rational UFDs of finite transcendence degree $n$ over $k$. We classify such UFDs $B$ when $n=2$, $k$ is algebraically closed, and $B$ admits a positive $\mathbb{Z}$-grading, showing in particular that $B$ is affine over $k$. We also consider the Russell cubic threefold over $\mathbb{C}$, and the Asanuma threefolds over a field of positive characterstic, showing that these threefolds admit no elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action. Finally, we show that, if $X$ is an affine $k$-variety and $X\times\mathbb{A}^m_k\cong_k\mathbb{A}^{n+m}_k$, then $X\cong_k\mathbb{A}^n_k$ if and …
Let O be a maximal order in a totally indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. In this note we study the locus Q_O of quaternionic multiplication by O in the moduli space A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties of even dimension g with particular emphasis in the two-dimensional case. We describe Q_O as a union of Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura varieties and we compute the number of irreducible components of Q_O in terms of class numbers of CM-fields.
For fixed degree $d\leq 12$, we study the Hilbert scheme of degree $d$ smooth Fano threefolds in their anticanonical embeddings. We use this to classify all possible degenerations of these varieties to toric Fano varieties with at most canonical Gorenstein singularities.
We prove that every globally $F$-regular variety is log Fano. In other words, if a prime characteristic variety $X$ is globally $F$-regular, then it admits an effective $\bQ$-divisor $Δ$ such that $-K_X - Δ$ is ample and $(X, Δ)$ has controlled (Kawamata log terminal, in fact globally $F$-regular) singularities. A weak form of this result can be viewed as a prime characteristic analog of de Fernex and Hacon's new point of view on Kawamata log terminal singularities in the non-$\bQ$-Gorenstein case. We also prove a converse statement in characteristic zero: every log Fano variety has globally $…
In this paper we study principally polarized complex abelian varieties that admit an automorphism of order 3. It turns out that certain natural conditions on the multiplicities of its action on the differentials of the first kind do guarantee that those polarized varieties are not jacobians of curves. As an application, we get another proof of the already known (thanks to Clemens and Griffiths) fact that intermediate jacobians of certain cubic threefolds are not jacobians of curves.
Conjectural results for cohomological invariants of wild character varieties are obtained by counting curves in degenerate Calabi-Yau threefolds. A conjectural formula for E-polynomials is derived from the Gromov-Witten theory of local Calabi-Yau threefolds with normal crossing singularities. A refinement is also conjectured, generalizing existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as recent joint work of Donagi, Pantev and the author for weighted Poincaré polynomials of wild character varieties.
We construct a $14$-dimensional affine variety $Σ^{14}_{\mathbb{A}}$ with a $\rm{GL}_3$- and a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^6$-actions. We denote by $Σ^{13}_{\mathbb{A}}$ the affine variety obtained from $Σ^{14}_{\mathbb{A}}$ by setting one specified variable to $1$ (we refer the precise definition to Definition 1.1 of the paper). We show that several weighted projectivizations of $Σ^{13}_{\mathbb{A}}$ and $Σ^{14}_{\mathbb{A}}$ produce, as weighted complete intersections, examples of prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano threefolds of codimension four belonging to $24$ classes of the graded ring database. Except No.360 …
This paper proposes the use of $F$-split and globally $F$-regular conditions in the pursuit of BAB type results in positive characteristic. The main technical work comes in the form of a detailed study of threefold Mori fibre spaces over positive dimensional bases. As a consequence we prove the main theorem, which reduces birational boundedness for a large class of varieties to the study of prime Fano varieties.
Fano varieties are 'atomic pieces' of algebraic varieties, the shapes that can be defined by polynomial equations. We describe the role of computation and database methods in the construction and classification of Fano varieties, with an emphasis on three-dimensional Fano varieties with mild singularities called Q-Fano threefolds. The classification of Q-Fano threefolds has been open for several decades, but there has been significant recent progress. These advances combine computational algebraic geometry and large-scale data analysis with new ideas that originated in theoretical physics.
Let $C \subset P^{g-1}$ be a smooth canonical curve of genus $g \geq 3$. The purpose of this article is to further develop a method to classify varieties having $C$ as their curve section, using Gaussian map computations. In a previous article a careful analysis of the degeneration to the cone over the hyperplane section was made for _prime_ Fano threefolds, that is Fano threefolds whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane bundle. In this article we extend this method and classify Fano threefolds of higher index (which still have Picard number one). We are also able to classify Mukai v…

We establish the real integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles on various classes of uniruled threefolds (conic bundles, Fano threefolds with no real point, some del Pezzo fibrations) and on conic bundles over higher-dimensional bases which themselves satisfy the real integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles. In addition, we show that rationally connected threefolds over non-archimedean real closed fields do not satisfy the real integral Hodge conjecture in general and that over such fields, Bröcker's EPT theorem remains true for simply connected surfaces of geometric genus zero but fails for some…
In our previous research, we constructed the affine varieties $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and $Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ whose partial projectivizations admit $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations with relative Picard number one. In this paper, we produce prime quasi-smooth $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds which are anticanonically embedded of codimension four and belong to 23 (resp.8) classes in the Graded Ring Database [GRDB], as weighted complete intersections in weighted projectivizations of $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ (resp.$Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ or its cone). We also show that a general member of the a…
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
