Let O be a maximal order in a totally indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. In this note we study the locus Q_O of quaternionic multiplication by O in the moduli space A_g of principally polarized abelian varieties of even dimension g with particular emphasis in the two-dimensional case. We describe Q_O as a union of Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura varieties and we compute the number of irreducible components of Q_O in terms of class numbers of CM-fields.
Igusa varieties are algebraic varieties that arise in the study of special fibers of Shimura varieties, and have demonstrated many applications in the Langlands program via a Langlands-Kottwitz style point-counting formula due to Shin in the case of PEL type. In this paper we formulate and prove an analogue of the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture for Igusa varieties of Hodge type, building off the work of Kisin in the case of Shimura varieties. We then use this description of the points to derive a point-counting formula for Igusa varieties of Hodge type, generalizing the fomula in PEL type of Sh…
Our main theorem describes the degree 0 cohomology of Igusa varieties in terms of one-dimensional automorphic representations in the setup of mod p Hodge-type Shimura varieties with hyperspecial level at p, mirroring the well known analogue for complex Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain a completely new approach to two geometric questions. (See Sect. 1.5 for a comparison with independent results by van Hoften and Xiao via a different approach.) Firstly, we verify the discrete part of the Hecke orbit conjecture, which amounts to irreducibility of central leaves, generalizing preced…
We formulate and prove certain vanishing theorems for p-adic automorphic forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature. The p-adic q-expansion principle for p-adic modular forms on the Igusa tower says that if the coefficients of (sufficiently many of) the q-expansions of a p-adic modular form f are zero, then f vanishes everywhere on the Igusa tower. There is no p-adic q-expansion principle for unitary groups of arbitrary signature in the literature. By replacing q-expansions with Serre-Tate expansions (expansions in terms of Serre-Tate deformation coordinates) and replacing modular forms wi…
In this article we prove several level lowering results for cuspidal automorphic representations occurring in the cohomology of the Siegel modular threefold with paramodular level structure by adapting a method of Ribet in his proof of the Serre's epsilon conjecture. The proof is purely geometric and relies on the description of the supersingular locus of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety and an arithmetic level raising result on this Shimura variety. The heart of the proof is a comparison of the dimension of the space of vanishing cycles on the paramodular Siegel modular threefold …
The goal of this paper is to show that the cohomology of compact unitary Shimura varieties is concentrated in the middle degree and torsion-free, after localizing at a maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra satisfying a suitable genericity assumption. Along the way, we establish various foundational results on the geometry of the Hodge-Tate period map. In particular, we compare the fibres of the Hodge-Tate period map with Igusa varieties.
By considering the intersections of Shimura curves and Humbert surfaces on the Siegel modular threefold, we obtain new class number relations. The result is a higher-dimensional analogue of the classical Hurwitz-Kronecker class number relation.
When the level at $l$ of a Shimura variety of Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor is not maximal, its cohomology with coefficients in a $\overline{\mathbb Z}_l$-local system isn't in general torsion free. In order to prove torsion freeness results of the cohomology, we localize at a maximal ideal $\mathfrak m$ of the Hecke algebra. We then prove a result of torsion freeness resting either on $\mathfrak m$ itself or on the Galois representation $\overline ρ_{\mathfrak m}$ associated to it. Concerning the torsion, in a rather restricted case than the work of Caraiani-Scholze, we prove that the torsion doesn'…
Let $\mathcal Q_D$ be the set of moduli points on Siegel's modular threefold whose corresponding principally polarized abelian surfaces have quaternionic multiplication by a maximal order $\mathcal O$ in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $D$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that the Rosati involution coincides with a positive involution of the form $α\mapstoμ^{-1}\overlineαμ$ on $\mathcal O$ for some $μ\in\mathcal O$ with $μ^2+D=0$. In this paper, we first give a formula for the number of irreducible components in $\mathcal Q_D$, strengthening an earlier result of Rotger. Then for each irr…
Let $E$ be a quadratic imaginary field and let $p$ be a prime which is inert in $E.$ We study three types of Picard modular surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ and the morphisms between them. The first Picard surface, denoted $S$, parametrizes triples $(A,ϕ,ι)$ comprised of an abelian threefold $A$ with an action $ι$ of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{E}$, and a principal polarization $ϕ$. The second surface, $S_{0}(p)$, parametrizes, in addition, a suitably restricted choice of a subgroup $H\subset A[p]$ of rank $p^{2}$. The third Picard surface, $\widetilde{S}$, parametrizes triples $…
Let $E$ be an ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field and $g$ be a positive integer. Under some technical assumptions, we give an algorithm to span the isomorphism classes of principally polarized abelian varieties in the isogeny class of $E^g$. The varieties are first described as hermitian lattices over (not necessarily maximal) quadratic orders and then geometrically in terms of their algebraic theta null point. We also show how to algebraically compute Siegel modular forms of even weight given as polynomials in the theta constants by a careful choice of an affine lift of the theta null…
The theory of endoscopy predicts the existence of large families of Tate classes on certain products of Shimura varieties, and it is natural to ask in what cases one can construct algebraic cycles giving rise to these Tate classes. This paper takes up the case of Tate classes arising from the Yoshida lift: these are Tate cycles in middle degree on the Shimura variety for the group $\operatorname{Res}_{F/\mathbb Q} (\operatorname{GL}_2 \times \operatorname{GSp}_4)$, where $F$ is a totally real field. A special case is the family of Tate classes which reflect the appearance of two-dimensional Ga…
