We describe hypergeometric functions of Deligne-Mostow type for open subsets of the configuration space of six points on P^2, induced from those for seven points on P^1. The seven point ball quotient example DM(2^5,1^2) does not appear on Mostow's original list, but does appear on Thurston's corrected version. We show that DM(2^5,1^2) is a finite cover of the moduli space of cubic surfaces M_C endowed with the ball quotient structure G_C\B^4 of Allcock, Carlson, and Toledo. This answers a question of Allcock about the commensurability of G_C with the monodromy groups of Deligne-Mostow hypergeometric functions.
We prove a result on the singularities of ball quotients $Γ\backslash\CC H^n$. More precisely, we show that a ball quotient has canonical singularities under certain restrictions on the dimension $n$ and the underlying lattice. We also extend this result to the toroidal compactification $(Γ\backslash\CC H^n)^*$.
Some ball-quotient orbifolds are related by covering maps. We exploit these coverings to find infinite towers of orbifolds uniformized by the complex 2-ball and some orbifolds over K3 surfaces uniformized by the 2-ball. Corresponding lattices are all arithmetic and commensurable. We also give, along with infinitely many reducible examples, an infinite series of irreducible curves along which the projective plane is uniformized by the product of two 1-balls.
We study moduli spaces of certain sextic curves with a singularity of multiplicity 3 from both perspectives of Deligne-Mostow theory and periods of K3 surfaces. In both ways we can describe the moduli spaces via arithmetic quotients of complex hyperbolic balls. We show in Theorem 7.4 that the two ball-quotient constructions can be unified in a geometric way.
We study the Fano surface S of the Fermat cubic threefold. We prove that S is a degree 81 abelian cover of the degree 5 del Pezzo surface and that the complement of the union of 12 disjoint elliptic curves on S is a ball quotient. The lattice of this ball quotient is related to the Deligne-Mostow lattice number 1.
We describe periods of irreducible holomorphic manifolds of $K3^{[n]}$-type with a non-symplectic automorphism of prime order $p\geq 3$. These turn out to lie on complex ball quotients and we are able to give a precise characterization of when the period map is bijective, by introducing the notion of $K(T)$-generality.
We define a natural compactification of an arrangement complement in a ball quotient. We show that when this complement has a moduli space interpretation, then this compactification is often one that appears naturally by means of geometric invariant theory. We illustrate this with the moduli spaces of smooth quartic curves and rational elliptic surfaces.
The purpose of this note is to show that $2K$ of any smooth compact complex two ball quotient is very ample, except possibly for four pairs of fake projective planes of minimal type, where $K$ is the canonical line bundle. For the four pairs of fake projective planes, sections of $2K_M$ give an embedding of $M$ except possibly for at most two points on $M$.
We give explicit estimates for the volume of the Green-Griffiths jet differentials of any order on a toroidal compactification of a ball quotient. To this end, we first determine the growth of the logarithmic Green-Griffiths jet differentials on these objects, using a natural deformation of the logarithmic jet space of a given order, to a suitable weighted projective bundle. Then, we estimate the growth of the vanishing conditions that a logarithmic jet differential must satisfy over the boundary to be a standard one.
We define hypergeometric functions using intersection homology valued in a local system. Topology is emphasized; analysis enters only once, via the Hodge decomposition. By a pull-back procedure we construct special subsets S_{pi}, derived from Hurwitz spaces, of Deligne-Mostow moduli spaces DM(n,mu). Certain DM(n,mu) are known to be ball quotients, uniformized by hypergeometric functions valued in a complex ball (i.e., complex hyperbolic space). We give sufficient conditions for S_{pi} to be a subball quotient. Analyzing the simplest examples in detail, we describe ball quotient structures att…
S. Kondo has constructed a ball quotient compactification for the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic genus four curves. In this paper, we show that this space essentially coincides with a GIT quotient of the Chow variety of canonically embedded genus four curves. More specifically, we give an explicit description of this GIT quotient, and show that the birational map from this space to Kondo's space is resolved by the blow-up of a single point. This provides a modular interpretation of the points in the boundary of Kondo's space. Connections with the slope nine space in the Hassett-Keel program…
Let $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_1)', T(1))$ be á torsion free toroidal compactification with abelian minimal model $(A_1, D(1))$. An arbitrary principal isogeny $μ_a : A_2 \rightarrow A_1$, $a \in {\mathbb C}$ pulls-back $(A_1, D(1))$ to the abelian minimal model $(A_2, D(2))$ of a torsion free toroidal compactification $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_2)', D(2))$. The present work makes use of the isogeny pull-backs of abelian ball quotient models, towards the construction of infinite series of mutually non-birational co-abelian torsion free Galois covers $(({\mathbb B} / Γ_n)', T(n))$ of a ball quotient compactifi…
We provide a sharp upper bound on the quotient of the rank of an A-hypergeometric system with a three-dimensional torus action by the normalized volume of A; in this case, the upper bound is two.
We study Deraux's non arithmetic orbifold ball quotient surfaces obtained as birational transformations of a quotient $X$ of a particular Abelian surface $A$. Using the fact that $A$ is the Jacobian of the Bolza genus $2$ curve, we identify $X$ as the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}(1,3,8)$. We compute the equation of the mirror $M$ of the orbifold ball quotient $(X,M)$ and by taking the quotient by an involution, we obtain an orbifold ball quotient surface with mirror birational to an interesting configuration of plane curves of degrees $1,2$ and $3$. We also exhibit an arrangement of f…
Let X' be the toroidal compactification of the quotient of the complex 2-ball by a torsion free lattice G of SU(2,1). We say that X'is co-abelian if there is an abelian surface, birational to X'. The present work can be viewed as an illustration for the presence of a plenty of non-compact co-abelian torsion free toroidal compactifications. More precisely, it shows that all the admissible values for the volume of a torsion free quotient of the complex 2-ball are attained by co-abelian Picard modular ones over Eisenstein numbers. The article provides three types of infinite series of finite unra…
We construct some non-arithmetic ball quotients as branched covers of a quotient of an Abelian surface by a finite group, and compare them with lattices that previously appear in the literature. This gives an alternative construction, which is independent of the computer, of some lattices constructed by the author with Parker and Paupert.
We give an explicit description of the 3-ball quotients constructed by Couwenberg-Heckman-Looijenga, and deduce the value of their orbifold Euler characteristics. For each lattice, we also give a presentation in terms of generators and relations.
We study the $L^2$--cohomology of certain local systems on non-compact arithmetic ball quotients $X=Γ\backslash \B_n$, in particular vanishing and non--vanishing results. We also give generalizations to higher dimensional ball quotients and study the mixed Hodge structure on the sheaf cohomology of a local system with the $L^2$-cohomology contributing to the lowest weight part.
The moduli space of cubic threefolds in CP4, with some minor birational modifications, is the Baily-Borel compactification of the quotient of the complex 10-ball by a discrete group. We describe both the birational modifications and the discrete group explicitly.
The moduli space of stable quotients introduced by Marian-Oprea-Pandharipande provides a natural compactification of the space of morphisms from nonsingular curves to a nonsingular projective variety and carries a natural virtual class. We show that the analogue of Givental's J-function for the resulting twisted projective invariants is described by the same mirror hypergeometric series as the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants (which arise from the moduli space of stable maps), but without the mirror transform (in the Calabi-Yau case). This implies that the stable quotients and Gromov-Wit…
We study the number of distinct ways in which a smooth projective surface $X$ can be realized as a smooth toroidal compactification of a ball quotient. It follows from work of Hirzebruch that there are infinitely many distinct ball quotients with birational smooth toroidal compactifications. We take this to its natural extreme by constructing arbitrarily large families of distinct ball quotients with biholomorphic smooth toroidal compactifications.
We study the problem of non-existence of totally geodesic complex ball quotients in the open Torelli locus in a moduli space of principally polarized Abelian varieties using analytic techniques.
We determine the Lyapunov spectrum of ball quotients arising from cyclic coverings. The computations are performed by rewriting the sum of Lyapunov exponents as ratios of intersection numbers and by the analysis of the period map near boundary divisors. As a corollary, we complete the classification of commensurability classes of all presently known non-arithmetic ball quotients.
In this article we provide further evidence for the monstrous proposal of Daniel Allcock, by giving a plausible but still conjectural explanation for the deflation relation in the Coxeter group quotient of the orbifold fundamental group.
These are lecture notes based on a series of talks given by the authors at the CIMPA Summer School on Algebraic Geometry and Hypergeometric Functions held in Istanbul in Summer of 2005. They provide an introduction to a recent work on the complex ball uniformization of the moduli spaces of Del Pezzo surfaces, K3 surfaces and algebraic curves of lower genus. We discuss the relationship of these constructions with the Deligne-Mostow theory of periods of hypergeometric differentianl forms. For convenience to a non-expert reader we include an introduction to the theory of periods of integrals on a…
In this paper, we study punctured spheres in two dimensional ball quotient compactifications $(X, D)$. For example, we show that smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients cannot contain properly holomorphically embedded $3$-punctured spheres. We also use totally geodesic punctured spheres to prove ampleness of $K_X + αD$ for $α\in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$, giving a sharp version of a theorem of the first author with G. Di Cerbo. Finally, we produce the first examples of bielliptic ball quotient compactifications modeled on the Gaussian integers.
Let $Γ\subset \mathbf{PU}(2,1)$ be a lattice which is not co-compact, of finite Bergman-covolume and acting freely on the open unit ball $\mathbf{B} \subset \mathbb{C}^2$. Then the compactification $X = \bar{Γ\setminus \mathbf{B}}$ is a smooth projective surface with an elliptic compactification divisor $D = X \setminus (Γ\setminus \mathbf{B})$. In this short note we discover a new class of unramified ball-quotients $X$. We consider ball-quotients $X$ with $kod(X) = h^1(X, \mathcal{O}_X) = 1$. We prove that all minimal surfaces with finite Mordell-Weil group in the class described become after…
In connection with our previous investigation about Siegel threefolds which admit a Calabi--Yau model, we consider ball quotients which belong to the unitary group $\U(1,3)$. In this paper we determine a very particular example of a Picard modular variety of general type. Really we determine the ring of modular forms. This algebra has 25 generators, 15 modular forms $B_i$ of weight one and ten modular forms $C_j$ of weight 2. Both will appear as Borcherds products. We determine the ideal of relations. The forms $C_i$ are cuspidal. Their squares define holomorphic differential forms on the non-…
The purpose of the present paper is to explain the fake projective plane constructed by J.H. Keum from the point of view of arithmetic ball quotients. Beside the ball quotient associated with the fake projective plane, we also analize two further naturally related ball quotients whose minimal desingularizations lead to two elliptic surfaces, one already considered by J.H. Keum as well as the one constructed by M.N. Ishida in terms of p-adic uniformization.
We prove the generic exclusion of certain Shimura varieties of unitary and orthogonal types from the Torelli locus. The proof relies on a slope inequality on surface fibration due to G. Xiao, and the main result implies that certain Shimura varieties only meet the Torelli locus in dimension zero.
We consider the analogue of Hurwitz curves, smooth projective curves $C$ of genus $g \ge 2$ that realize equality in the Hurwitz bound $|\mathrm{Aut}(C)| \le 84 (g - 1)$, to smooth compact quotients $S$ of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$. When $S$ is arithmetic, we show that $|\mathrm{Aut}(S)| \le 288 e(S)$, where $e(S)$ is the (topological) Euler characteristic, and in the case of equality show that $S$ is a regular cover of a particular Deligne--Mostow orbifold. We conjecture that this inequality holds independent of arithmeticity, and note that work of Xiao makes progress on this conjecture…
We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.
S. Kondō used periods of $K3$ surfaces to prove that the moduli space of genus three curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a complex 6-ball. In this paper we study Heegner divisors in the ball quotient, given by arithmetically defined hyperplane sections of the ball. We show that the corresponding loci of genus three curves are given by: hyperelliptic curves, singular plane quartics and plane quartics admitting certain rational "splitting curves".
We construct two infinite families of ball quotient compactifications birational to bielliptic surfaces. For each family, the volume spectrum of the associated noncompact finite volume ball quotient surfaces is the set of all positive integral multiples of $\frac{8}{3}π^{2}$, i.e., they attain all possible volumes of complex hyperbolic $2$-manifolds. The surfaces in one of the two families have all $2$-cusps, so that we can saturate the entire volume spectrum with $2$-cusped manifolds. Finally, we show that the associated neat lattices have infinite abelianization and finitely generated commut…
If $X'= ({\mathbb B} / Γ)'$ is a torsion free toroidal compactification of a discrete ball quotient $X_o={\mathbb B} / Γ$ and $ξ: (X', T = X'\setminus X_o) \rightarrow (X, D = ξ(T))$ is the blow-down of the $(-1)$-curves to the corresponding minimal model, then $G'= Aut (X',T)$ coincides with the finite group $G=Aut(X,D)$. In particular, for an elliptic curve $E$ with endomorphism ring $R = End(E)$ and a split abelian surface $X = A = E \times E$, $G$ is a finite subgroup of $Aut(A) = \mathcal{T}_A \leftthreetimes GL(2,R)$, where $(\mathcal{T}_A,+) \simeq (A,+)$ is the translation group of $A$…
We give a complete classification of a certain family of step functions related to the Nyman--Beurling approach to the Riemann hypothesis and previously studied by V. I. Vasyunin. Equivalently, we completely describe when certain sequences of ratios of factorial products are always integral. Essentially, once certain observations are made, this comes down to an application of Beukers and Heckman's classification of the monodromy of the hypergeometric function nF_{n-1}. We also note applications to the classification of cyclic quotient singularities.
We prove that various arithmetic quotients of the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$ are Mordellic, in the sense that they have only finitely many rational points over any finitely generated field extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In the previously known case of compact hyperbolic complex surfaces, we give a new proof using their Albanese in conjunction with some key results of Faltings, but without appealing to the Shafarevich conjecture. In higher dimension, our methods allow us to solve an alternative of Ullmo and Yafaev. Our strongest result uses in addition Rogawski's theory and establishes the Mordell…

We present the various constructions of new symplectic $4$-manifolds with non-negative signatures using the complex surfaces on the BMY line $c_1^2 = 9χ_h$, the Cartwright-Steger surfaces, the quotients of Hirzebruch's certain line-arrangement surfaces, along with the exotic symplectic $4$-manifolds constructed in \cite{AP2, AS}. In particular, our constructions yield to (i) an irreducible symplectic and infinitely many non-symplectic $4$-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to $(2n-1)CP^{2}\#(2n-1)\bar{CP}^{2}$ for each integer $n \geq 9$, (ii) the families of simply connecte…
In this article we prove first of all the nonexistence of holomorphic submersions other than covering maps between compact quotients of complex unit balls, with a proof that works equally well in a more general equivariant setting. For a non-equidimensional surjective holomorphic map between compact ball quotients, our method applies to show that the set of critical values must be nonempty and of codimension 1. In the equivariant setting the line of arguments extend to holomorphic mappings of maximal rank into the complex projective space or the complex Euclidean space, yielding in the latter …
