We consider the class of all conformal mappings from a compact Riemann surface into the threedimensional or fourdimensional Euclidean space. A sequence in this class with bounded Willmore functional is shown to have a sequence of conformal transformations of the target space, such that a subsequence of the transformed sequence converges. This implies that there exists a smooth conformal mapping, which minimizes the Willmore functional in this class. For this purpose we extend the quaternionic function theory of Pedit and Pinkall to square integrable Hopf fields. In particular, we proof the Pluecker formula for such Hopf fields.
Motivated by a simple model for elastic cell membranes, we minimize the Willmore functional among two-dimensional spheres embedded in R^3 with prescribed isoperimetric ratio.
We consider a free boundary problem for the Willmore functional. Given a smooth domain $Ω$ in ${\mathbb R}^3$, we construct Willmore disks wich are critical in the class of surfaces meeting $\partial Ω$ orthogonally along their boundary and having small prescribed area. Using rescaling we first obtain constrained solutions with prescribed two-dimensional barycenter, and then study the variation of the barycenter.
We show that Lawson's bipolar surface $\tildeτ_{3,1}$ is after stereographic projection the unique minimizer among immersed Klein bottles in its conformal class. We conjecture that it actually is the unique minimizer among immersed Klein bottles into $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 4$, whose existence the authors and P. Breuning proved in a previous paper.
Let $K$ be a Klein bottle. We show that the infimum of the Willmore energy among all immersed Klein bottles in Euclidean $n$-space is attained by a smooth embedded Klein bottle, where $n\geq 4$. There are three distinct regular homotopy classes of immersed Klein bottles in the Euclidean four-space each one containing an embedding. One is characterized by the property that it contains the minimizer just mentioned. For the other two regular homotopy classes we show that the Willmore energy is bounded from below by $8π$. We give a classification of the minimizers of these two classes. In particul…
We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory …
We show the existence of a smooth spherical surface minimizing the Willmore functional subject to an area constraint in a compact Riemannian three-manifold, provided the area is small enough. Moreover, we classify complete surfaces of Willmore type with positive mean curvature in Riemannian three-manifolds.
The paper is devoted to the variational analysis of the Willmore, and other L^2 curvature functionals, among immersions of 2-dimensional surfaces into a compact riemannian m-manifold (M^m,h) with m>2. The goal of the paper is twofold, on one hand, we give the right setting for doing the calculus of variations (including min max methods) of such functionals for immersions into manifolds and, on the other hand, we prove existence results for possibly branched Willmore spheres under various constraints (prescribed homotopy class, prescribed area) or under curvature assumptions for M^m. To this ai…
The isoperimetric ratio of an embedded surface in $R^3$ is defined as the ratio of the area of the surface to power three to the squared enclosed volume. The aim of the present work is to study the minimization of the Willmore energy under fixed isoperimetric ratio when the underlying abstract surface has fixed genus $g\geq 0$. The corresponding problem in the case of spherical surfaces, i.e. $g=0$, was recently solved by Schygulla with different methods.
The Marques-Neves theorem asserts that among all the torodial (i.e. genus 1) closed surfaces, the Clifford torus has the minimal Willmore energy $\int H^2 \, dA$. % It is a natural conjecture that if one prescribes the isoperimetric Since the Willmore energy is invariant M{ö}bius transformations, it can be shown that there is a one-parameter family, up to homotheties, of genus 1 Willmore minimizers. It is then a natural conjecture that such a minimizer is unique if one prescribes its isoperimetric ratio. In this article, we show that this conjecture can be reduced to the positivity question of…
In this paper, we develop an adiabatic theory for the evolution of large closed surfaces under the area-constrained Willmore (ACW) flow in a three-dimensional asymptotically Schwarzschild manifold. We construct explicitly a map, defined on a certain four-dimensional manifold of barycenters, which characterizes key static and dynamical properties of the ACW flow. In particular, using this map, we find an explicit four-dimensional effective dynamics of barycenters, which serves as a uniform asymptotic approximation for the (infinite-dimensional) ACW flow, so long as the initial surface satisfies…
For a given family of smooth closed curves $γ^1,...,γ^α\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ we consider the problem of finding an elastic \emph{connected} compact surface $M$ with boundary $γ=γ^1\cup...\cupγ^α$. This is realized by minimizing the Willmore energy $\mathcal{W}$ on a suitable class of competitors. While the direct minimization of the Area functional may lead to limits that are disconnected, we prove that, if the infimum of the problem is $<4π$, there exists a connected compact minimizer of $\mathcal{W}$ in the class of integer rectifiable curvature varifolds with the assigned boundary conditions…
We consider the problem of minimizing the Willmore energy in the class of conformal immersions of a given closed, genus p Riemann surface into R^n for n=3,4. We prove existence of a smooth minimizer, provided that the infimum is below a certain bound ${\cal W}(n,p)$. For tori in R^3 we have explicitely ${\cal W}(3,1) = 8π$.
In this work we present new fundamental tools for studying the variations of the Willmore functional of immersed surfaces into $R^m$. This approach gives for instance a new proof of the existence of a Willmore minimizing embedding of an arbitrary closed surface in arbitrary codimension. We explain how the same approach can solve constraint minimization problems for the Willmore functional. We show in particular that, for a given closed surface and a given conformal class for this surface, there is an immersion in $R^m$, away possibly from isolated branched points, which minimizes the Willmore …
We develop a bubble tree construction and prove compactness results for $W^{2,2}$ branched conformal immersions of closed Riemann surfaces, with varying conformal structures whose limit may degenerate, in a compact Riemannian manifold with uniformly bounded areas and Willmore energies. The compactness property is applied to construct Willmore type surfaces in compact Riemannian manifolds. This includes (a) existence of a Willmore 2-sphere in ${\mathbb S}^n$ with at least 2 nonremovable singular points (b) existence of minimizers of the Willmore functional with prescribed area in a compact mani…
We study immersed tori in $3$-space minimizing the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class. Within the rectangular conformal classes $\;(0,b)\;$ with $\;b \sim 1\;$ the homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ are known to be the unique constrained Willmore minimizers (up to invariance). In this paper we generalize this result and show that the candidates constructed in \cite{HelNdi2} are indeed constrained Willmore minimizers in certain non-rectangular conformal classes $\;(a,b).\;$ Difficulties arise from the fact that these minimizers are non-degenerate for $\;a \neq 0\;$ but smoothly converge…
A conformally invariant generalization of the Willmore energy for compact immersed submanifolds of even dimension in a Riemannian manifold is derived and studied. The energy arises as the coefficient of the log term in the renormalized area expansion of a minimal submanifold in a Poincare-Einstein space with prescribed boundary at infinity. Its first variation is identified as the obstruction to smoothness of the minimal submanifold. The energy is explicitly identified for the case of submanifolds of dimension four. Variational properties of this four-dimensional energy are studied in detail w…
The Willmore Problem seeks the surface in $\mathbb S^3\subset\mathbb R^4$ of a given topological type minimizing the squared-mean-curvature energy $W = \int |\mathbf{H}_{\mathbb{R}^4}|^2 = \operatorname{area} + \int H_{\mathbb{S}^3}^2$. The longstanding Willmore Conjecture that the Clifford torus minimizes $W$ among genus-$1$ surfaces is now a theorem of Marques and Neves [19], but the general conjecture [10] that Lawson's [16] minimal surface $ξ_{g,1}\subset\mathbb S^3$ minimizes $W$ among surfaces of genus $g>1$ remains open. Here we prove this conjecture under the additional assumption that…
We solve the analogue of Björling's problem for Willmore surfaces via a harmonic map representation. For the umbilic-free case the problem and solution are as follows: given a real analytic curve $y_0$ in $S^3$, together with the prescription of the values of the surface normal and the dual Willmore surface along the curve, lifted to the light cone in Minkowski $5$-space $\mathbb{R}^5_1$, we prove, using isotropic harmonic maps, that there exists a unique pair of dual Willmore surfaces $y$ and $\hat y$ satisfying the given values along the curve. We give explicit formulae for the generalized W…
We investigate the Hawking energy of small surfaces in space times without symmetry assumptions by introducing the notion of Hawking type functionals. In particular, we find that Hawking type functionals are generalized Willmore functionals which allows us to find area constrained, minimizing, immersed, haunted bubble trees. These bubble trees are smooth spheres provided their area is small enough. Following a similar analysis of the Willmore functional conducted by T. Lamm and J. Metzger we characterize the concentration points of area constrained, critical surfaces for Hawking type functiona…
Conformal invariance plays a significant role in many areas of Physics, such as conformal field theory, renormalization theory, turbulence, general relativity. Naturally, it also plays an important role in geometry: theory of Riemannian surfaces, Weyl tensors, $Q$-curvature, Yang-Mills fields, etc... We shall be concerned with the study of conformal invariance in analysis. More precisely, we will focus on the study of nonlinear PDEs arising from conformally invariant two dimensional variational problems (e.g. harmonic maps, prescribed mean curvature surfaces, Willmore and Constrained conformal…
We study curvature functionals for immersed 2-spheres in non-compact, three-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,h)$ without boundary. First, under the assumption that $(M,h)$ is the euclidean 3-space endowed with a semi-perturbed metric with perturbation small in $C^1$ norm and of compact support, we prove that if there is some point $\bar{x} \in M$ with scalar curvature $R^M(\bar{x})>0$ then there exists a smooth embedding $f:S^2 \hookrightarrow M$ minimizing the Willmore functional $1/4\int |H|^2$, where $H$ is the mean curvature. Second, assuming that $(M,h)$ is of bounded geometry (i.e. bo…
We study existence and structure of $P-$area minimizing surfaces in the Heisenberg group under Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that there exists an underlying vector field $N$ that characterized existence and structure of $P$-area minimizing surfaces. This vector field exists even if there is no $P$-area minimizing surface satisfying the prescribed boundary conditions. We prove that if $\partial Ω$ satisfies a so called Barrier condition, it is sufficient to guarantee existence of such surfaces. Our approach is completely different from previous methods in the literature and…
In this paper we continue to study the connection among the area minimizing problem, certain area functional and the Dirichlet problem of minimal surface equations in a class of conformal cones with a similar motivation from \cite{GZ20}. These cones are certain generalizations of hyperbolic spaces. We describe the structure of area minimizing $n$-nteger multiplicity currents in bounded $C^2$ conformal cones with prescribed $C^1$ graphical boundary via a minimizing problem of these area functionals. As an application we solve the corresponding Dirichlet problem of minimal surface equations unde…
We solve the classical problem of Plateau in the setting of proper metric spaces. Precisely, we prove that among all disc-type surfaces with prescribed Jordan boundary in a proper metric space there exists an area minimizing disc which moreover has a quasi-conformal parametrization. If the space supports a local quadratic isoperimetric inequality for curves we prove that such a solution is locally Hölder continuous in the interior and continuous up to the boundary. Our results generalize corresponding results of Douglas and Morrey from the setting of Euclidean space and Riemannian manifolds to…
We give new examples of entire area-minimizing t-graphs in the subriemannian Heisenberg group H^1. Most of the examples are locally lipschitz in Euclidean sense. Some regular examples have prescribed singular set consisting of either a horizontal line or a finite number of horizontal halflines extending from a given point. Amongst them, a large family of area-minimizing cones is obtained.
We consider smooth bounded surfaces with a smooth boundary and a prescribed background metric g_0. We now consider all metrics g conformal to g_0 which have a prescribed volume M. We now minimize the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of g over the metrics conformal to g_0 and having the prescribed volume. We show that this problem is equivalent to the study of the Composite Membrane Problem, a free boundary problem studied earlier by the author and his collaborators in all dimensions. Thus complete answers, existence of the limit metric, regularity of the minimizing eigenfunction and va…
We introduce a smooth quadratic conformal functional and its weighted version $$W_2=\sum_e β^2(e)\quad W_{2,w}=\sum_e (n_i+n_j)β^2(e),$$ where $β(e)$ is the extrinsic intersection angle of the circumcircles of the triangles of the mesh sharing the edge $e=(ij)$ and $n_i$ is the valence of vertex $i$. Besides minimizing the squared local conformal discrete Willmore energy $W$ this functional also minimizes local differences of the angles $β$. We investigate the minimizers of this functionals for simplicial spheres and simplicial surfaces of nontrivial topology. Several remarkable facts are obse…
This thesis is devoted to the Differential Geometry of curves and surfaces along with applications in Quantum Mechanics. In the 1st part we introduce the well known Frenet frame. Later, we show that the curvature function is a lower bound for the scalar angular velocity of any other orthonormal moving frame, from which one defines Rotation Minimizing (RM) frames as the ones that achieve this minimum. Remarkably, RM frames are ideal to study spherical curves and allow us to characterize them through a simple linear equation. We also apply these ideas to curves that lie on level surfaces, by rei…
