Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with the residual characteristic $p$. We construct a "good" number of smooth irreducible $\bar{\mathbf{F}}_p$-representations of $GL_2(F)$, which are supersingular in the sense of Barthel and Livné. If $F=\mathbf{Q}_p$ then results of Breuil imply that our construction gives all the supersingular representations up to the twist by an unramified quasi-character. We conjecture this is true for arbitrary $F$.
In this note for $p>5$ we calculate the dimensions of ${\rm Ext}^1_{{\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)}(τ, σ)$ for any two irreducible supersingular representations $τ$ and $σ$ of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$.
We prove that any connected reductive group of semisimple $F$-rank 1 over a $p$-adic field admits an irreducible admissible supersingular mod-$p$ representation. This establishes one of the missing cases in Vignéras' existence proof for general reductive groups.
The purpose of this note is to give a direct proof of the fact that if one applies Colmez' functor to a two dimensional irreducible F_p^bar-representation of Gal(Q_p^bar/Q_p), one gets the restriction to the Borel subgroup of GL_2(Q_p) of a supersingular representation.
We prove that any smooth irreducible supersingular representation with central character of $\text{GL}_2(F)$ is never of finite presentation when $F$ is a finite field extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ such that $F\neq \mathbb{Q}_p$, extending a result of Schraen for quadratic extensions.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p>3$ and residue degree $f>1$. We study a certain type of diagram, called \emph{cyclic diagrams}, and use them to show that the universal supersingular modules of $\mathrm{GL}_{2}(F)$ admit infinitely many non-isomorphic irreducible admissible quotients.
Let $F$ be a local field of mixed characteristic, let $k$ be a finite extension of its residue field, let ${\mathcal H}$ be the pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke $k$-algebra attached to ${\rm GL}_{d+1}(F)$ for some $d\ge1$. We construct an exact and fully faithful functor from the category of supersingular ${\mathcal H}$-modules to the category of ${\rm Gal}(\overline{F}/F)$-representations over $k$. More generally, for a certain $k$-algebra ${\mathcal H}^{\sharp}$ surjecting onto ${\mathcal H}$ we define the notion of $\sharp$-supersingular modules and construct an exact and fully faithful functor from t…
We construct infinite families of irreducible supersingular mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ with $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$-socle compatible with Serre's modularity conjecture, where $F / \mathbb{Q}_p$ is any finite extension with residue field $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ and ramification degree $e \leq (p-1)/2$. These are the first such examples for ramified $F / \mathbb{Q}_p$.
Let F be a nonarchimedean local field of odd residual characteristic p. We classify finite-dimensional simple right modules for the pro-p-Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_C(G,I(1))$, where G is the unramified unitary group U(2,1)(E/F) in three variables. Using this description when C is the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_p$, we define supersingular Hecke modules and show that the functor of I(1)-invariants induces a bijection between irreducible nonsupersingular mod-p representations of G and nonsupersingular simple right $\mathcal{H}_C(G,I(1))$-modules. We then use an argument of Paskunas…
Let $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$ of odd residue characteristic $p$. In this paper, for any supersingular representation of $G$ that contains the Steinberg weight, we prove its pro-$p$-Iwahori invariants, as a right module over the pro-$p$-Iwahori--Hecke algebra of $G$, is \emph{not} simple.
Let $p>2$ be a prime number. Let $G:=GL_2(Q_p)$ and $π$, $τ$ smooth irreducible representations of $G$ on $\bar{F}_p$-vector spaces with a central character. We show if $π$ is supersingular then $Ext^1_G(τ,π)\neq 0$ implies $τ\cong π$. This answers affirmatively for $p>2$ a question of Colmez. We also determine $Ext^1_G(τ,π)$, when $π$ is the Steinberg representation. As a consequence of our results combined with those already in the literature one knows $Ext^1_G(τ,π)$ for all irreducible representations of $G$.

We investigate the mod-$p$ supersingular representations of $GL_2(D)$, where $D$ is a division algebra over a $p$-adic field with characteristic 0, by computing a basis for the vector space of the pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup invariants of a certain quotient of a compact induction. This work generalizes the results of Hendel and Schein.
Suppose that $\mathbf{G}$ is a connected reductive group over a finite extension $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$, and that $C$ is a field of characteristic $p$. We prove that the group $\mathbf{G}(F)$ admits an irreducible admissible supercuspidal, or equivalently supersingular, representation over $C$.
Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. Using the mod p Satake transform, we define what it means for an irreducible admissible smooth representation of an F-split p-adic reductive group over \bar F_p to be supersingular. We then give the classification of irreducible admissible smooth GL_n(F)-representations over \bar F_p in terms of supersingular representations. As a consequence we deduce that supersingular is the same as supercuspidal. These results generalise the work of Barthel-Livne for n = 2. For general split reductive groups we obtain similar results under stronger hypotheses.
Let $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ be a finite extension. We explore the universal supersingular mod $p$ representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ through computing a basis of their invariant space under the pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup. This generalizes works of Breuil and Schein from $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and the totally ramified cases to the arbitrary one. Using these results we then construct for an unramified $F/\mathbb{Q}_p$ a quotient of the universal supersingular module which has as quotients all the supersingular representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F)$ with a $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$-socle that is expected t…
In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter and the representations of an affine pro-$p$ Hecke algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular representation: a (virtual) representation is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of the cocenter.
In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$ and the finite dimensional representations of an affine $0$-Hecke algebra $\tilde \ch_0$. As a consequence, we obtain a new criterion on the supersingular modules: a (virtual) module of $\tilde \ch_0$ is supersingular if and only if its character vanishes on the non-supersingular part of $\overline{\tilde \ch_0}$.
Let $F$ be any non archimedean locally compact field of residual characteristic $p$, let $G$ be any reductive connected $F$-group and let $K$ be any special parahoric subgroup of $G(F)$. We choose a parabolic $F$-subgroup $P$ of $G$ with Levi decomposition $P=MN$ in good position with respect to $K$. Let $C$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$. We choose an irreducible smooth $C$-representation $V$ of $K$. We investigate the natural intertwiner from the compact induced representation $\ind_{K}^{G(F)}V$ to the parabolically induced representation $\Ind_{P(F)}^{G(F)}(\ind_{M(F…
We study the center of the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke ring H of a connected split p-adic reductive group G. For k an algebraically closed field with characteristic p, we prove that the center of the k-algebra H_k:= H\otimes_Z k contains an affine semigroup algebra which is naturally isomorphic to the Hecke algebra attached to any irreducible smooth k-representation of a given hyperspecial maximal compact subgroup of G. This isomorphism is obtained using the inverse Satake isomorphism constructed in arXiv:1207.5557. We apply this to classify the simple supersingular H_k-modules, study the supersingula…
Let F be a locally compact non-archimedean field, p its residue characteristic, and G a connected reductive group over F. Let C an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. We give a complete classification of irreducible admissible C-representations of G = G(F), in terms of supercuspidal C-representations of the Levi subgroups of G, and parabolic induction. Thus we push to their natural conclusion the ideas of the third-named author, who treated the case G = GL_m, as further expanded by the first-named author, who treated split groups G. As in the split case, we first get a classificati…
Let G be the group of rational points of a reductive connected group over a finite field (resp. nonarchimedean local field of characteristic p) and R a commutative ring. The unipotent (resp. pro-p Iwahori) invariant functor takes a smooth representation of G to a module over the unipotent (resp. pro-p Iwahori) Hecke R-algebra H of G. We prove that these functors for G and for a Levi subgroup of G commute with the parabolic induction functors, as well as with the right adjoints of the parabolic induction functors. However, they do not commute with the left adjoints of the parabolic induction fu…
We extend Colmez's functor defined for $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ to the category of finitely generated smooth admissible mod-$p$ representations of the two-fold metaplectic cover of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$. We compute the images of the absolutely irreducible genuine objects and obtain a bijection between the genuine supersingular representations and four-dimensional irreducible Galois representations invariant under twist by all characters of order two. Restricted to genuine objects, the extended functor naturally takes values in the category of what we call metaplectic G…
Let $G={\rm SL}_2(\mathfrak F) $ where $\mathfrak F$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_p$. We suppose that the pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup $I$ of $G$ is a Poincaré group of dimension $d$. Let $k$ be a field containing the residue field of $\mathfrak F$. In this article, we study the graded Ext-algebra $E^*={\operatorname{Ext}}_{\operatorname{Mod}(G)}^*(k[G/I], k[G/I])$. Its degree zero piece $E^0$ is the usual pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra $H$. We study $E^d$ as an $H$-bimodule and deduce that for an irreducible admissible smooth representation of $G$, we have $H^d(I,V)=0$ unless $V$ is the tri…
Let $E/F$ be a unramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean local fields of odd characteristic $p$, and $G$ be the unramified unitary group $U(2, 1)(E/F)$. For an irreducible smooth representation $π$ of $G$ over $\overline{\mathbf{F}}_p$, with an underlying irreducible smooth representation $σ$ of a maximal compact open subgroup $K$, we prove that $π$ admits eigenvectors for an appropriate Hecke operator $T_σ$, and we classify those $π$ with non-zero eigenvalues for $T_σ$ by a tree argument; as a corollary, we show $π$ is supersingular if and only if it is supercuspidal.
A polarized abelian variety (X,λ) of dimension g over a local field K determines an admissible representation of GSpin_{2g+1}(K). We show that the restriction of this representation to Spin_{2g+1}(K) is reducible if and only if X is isogenous to its twist by the quadratic unramified extension of K. When g=1 and K = Q_p, we recover the well-known fact that the admissible GL_2(K) representation attached to an elliptic curve E is reducible upon restriction to SL_2(K) if and only if E has supersingular reduction.
Let $Π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(\mathbb{A_Q})$ and let $p$ be an odd prime at which $Π$ is unramified. In a recent work, Barrera, Dimitrov and Williams constructed possibly unbounded $p$-adic $L$-functions interpolating complex $L$-values of $Π$ in the non-ordinary case. Under certain assumptions, we construct two \textit{bounded} $p$-adic $L$-functions for $Π$, thus extending an earlier work of Rockwood by relaxing the Pollack condition. Using Langlands local-global compatibility, we define signed Selmer groups over the $p$-adic cyclotomic extension of $\…
We prove that the continuous group cohomology groups of a locally profinite group $ G $ with coefficients in a smooth $ k $-representation $ π$ of $ G $ are isomorphic to the $ \mathrm{Ext}$-groups $ \mathrm{Ext}^i_G(\mathbb{1},π) $ computed in the category of smooth $ k $-representations of $ G $. We apply this to show that if $ π$ is a supersingular $ \overline{\mathbb{F}}_p $-representation of $ \mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p) $, then the continuous group cohomology of $ \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ with values in $ π$ vanishes. Furthermore, we prove that the continuous group cohomology groups …
Let $F$ be a p-adic local field and $G=GL_2(F)$. Let $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}$ be the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke algebra of $G$ with coefficients in an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We show that the supersingular irreducible $\mathcal{H}^{(1)}$-modules of dimension 2 can be realized through the equivariant cohomology of the flag variety of the mod p Langlands dual group of $G$.
Without using the $p$-adic Langlands correspondence, we prove that for many finite length smooth representations of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ on $p$-torsion modules the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$-linear morphisms coincide with the morphisms that are linear for the normalizer of a parahoric subgroup. We identify this subgroup to be the Iwahori subgroup in the supersingular case, and $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{Z}_p)$ in the principal series case. As an application, we relate the action of parahoric subgroups to the action of the inertia group of $\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{\mathbf{Q}}_p/\mathbf{Q…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field, let $G$ be a split connected reductive group over $F$. For a parabolic subgroup $Q\subset G$ and a ring $L$ we consider the $G$-representation on the $L$-module$$(*)\quad\quad\quad\quad C^{\infty}(G/Q,L)/\sum_{Q'\supsetneq Q}C^{\infty}(G/Q',L).$$Let $I\subset G$ denote an Iwahori subgroup. We define a certain free finite rank $L$-module ${\mathfrak M}$ (depending on $Q$; if $Q$ is a Borel subgroup then $(*)$ is the Steinberg representation and ${\mathfrak M}$ is of rank one) and construct an $I$-equivariant embedding of $(*)$ into $C^{\infty}…
We show that the continuous cohomology groups of a $ p $-adic reductive group with coefficients in the locally analytic vectors of an admissible $ \mathbb{Q}_p $-Banach space representation are homeomorphic to those with coefficients in the Banach space representation itself. Moreover, we deduce that the canonical topologies on those continuous cohomology groups are Hausdorff and are the uniquely determined finest locally convex topologies.
We show that the theta representations on certain covers of general linear groups support certain types of unique functionals. The proof involves two types of Fourier coefficients. The first are semi-Whittaker coefficients, which generalize coefficients introduced by Bump and Ginzburg for the double cover. The covers for which these coefficients vanish identically (resp. do not vanish for some choice of data) are determined in full. The second are the Fourier coefficients associated with general unipotent orbits. In particular, we determine the unipotent orbit attached, in the sense of Ginzbur…
Motivated by the Langlands program in representation theory, number theory and geometry, the theory of representations of a reductive $p$-adic group over a coefficient ring different from the field of complex numbers has been widely developped during the last two decades. This article provides a survey of basic results obtained in the 21st century.
We derive an upper bound on the support of matrix coefficients of suprecuspidal representations of the general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. The results are in par with those which can be obtained from the Bushnell--Kutzko classification of supercuspidal representations, but they are proved independently.
In this paper, we study top Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Jiang on top Fourier coefficients of isobaric automorphic representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})$ of form $$ Δ(τ_1, b_1) \boxplus Δ(τ_2, b_2) \boxplus \cdots \boxplus Δ(τ_r, b_r)\,, $$ where $Δ(τ_i,b_i)$'s are Speh representations in the discrete spectrum of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_ib_i}(\mathbb{A})$ with $τ_i$'s being unitary cuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{a_i}(\mathbb{A})$, and $n = \sum_{i=1}^r a_ib_i$. Endoscopic lifting i…
In the theory of automorphic descents developed by Ginzburg, Rallis and Soudry in [GRS11], the structure of Fourier coefficients of the residual representations of certain special Eisenstein series plays important roles. Started from [JLZ13], the authors are looking for more general residual representations, which may yield more general theory of automorphic descents. In this paper, we investigate the structure of Fourier coefficients of certain residual representations of symplectic groups, corresponding to certain interesting families of global Arthur parameters. On one hand, the results par…
We show that Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms attached to minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representations of ${\mathrm{SL}}_n(\mathbb{A})$ are completely determined by certain highly degenerate Whittaker coefficients. We give an explicit formula for the Fourier expansion, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro-Shalika formula. In addition, we derive expressions for Fourier coefficients associated to all maximal parabolic subgroups. These results have potential applications for scattering amplitudes in string theory.
We consider the residues at the poles in the right half plane of Eisenstein series, on symplectic groups, or their double covers, induced from Speh representations. We show that for each such pole, there is a unique maximal nilpotent orbit, attached to Fourier coefficients admitted by the corresponding residual representation. We find this orbit in each case.
Let $G=GL_{n}(R)$, with the usual Cartan decomposition $G=Kexp(p_0)$ and the usual Iwasawa decomposition $G=NAK$. We determine the image of $exp(p_0)$ under the projection of $G$ to $K$ through the Iwasawa decomposition. As an application, we prove a positivity result about the matrix coefficients of principal series representations of $G$.
This paper is concerned with representations of split orthogonal and quasi-split unitary groups over a nonarchimedean local field which are not generic, but which support a unique model of a different kind, the generalized Bessel model. The properties of the Bessel models under induction are studied, and an analogue of Rodier's theorem concerning the induction of Whittaker models is proved for Bessel models which are minimal in a suitable sense. The holomorphicity in the induction parameter of the Bessel functional is established. Last, local coefficients are defined for each irreducible super…
For the discrete series representations of ${\rm GL}(n)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$, we define a notion of functions similar to "zonal spherical functions" for unramified principal series. We prove the existence of such functions in the level $0$ case. As for unramified principal series, they give rise to explicit coefficients. We deduce a local proof of Matringe's criterion of distinction of discrete series, in the level $0$ case, for the Galois symmetric space ${\rm GL}(n,F)/{\rm GL}(n,F_0 )$, for any unramified quadratic extension $F/F_0$. We also exhibit explicit test vectors w…
We use character polynomials to obtain a positive combinatorial interpretation of the multiplicity of the sign representation in irreducible polynomial representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ indexed by two-column and hook partitions. Our method also yields a positive combinatorial interpretation for the multiplicity of the trivial representation of $S_n$ in an irreducible polynomial representation indexed by a hook partition.
The reduced Burau representation $V_n$ of the braid group $B_n$ is obtained from the action of $B_n$ on the homology of an infinite cyclic cover of the $n$-punctured disc. In this note, we calculate $H_*(B_n;V_n)$ as a module over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[t,t^{-1}]$.
We prove a general representation stability result for polynomial coefficient systems which lets us prove representation stability and secondary homological stability for many families of groups with polynomial coefficients. This gives two generalizations of classical homological stability theorems with twisted coefficients. We apply our results to prove homological stability for hyperelliptic mapping class groups with twisted coefficients, prove new representation stability results for congruence subgroups, establish secondary homological stability for groups of diffeomorphisms of surfaces vi…
