We construct new special Lagrangian submanifolds in complex Euclidean space using a pair of minimal Legendrian submanifolds in odd-dimensional spheres and certain Lagrangian surface belonging to a family that can be considered as a generalization of the special Lagrangian surfaces in complex Euclidean plane. Our examples include those invariant under the standard action of SO(p+1)xSO(q+1) on C^n = C^(p+1) x C^(q+1), n=p+q+2.
Starting from two Lagrangian immersions and a Legendre curve $\tildeγ(t)$ in $\mathbb{S}^3(1)$ (or in $\mathbb{H}_1^3(1)$), it is possible to construct a new Lagrangian immersion in $\mathbb{CP}^n$ (or in $\mathbb{CH}^n$), which is called a warped product Lagrangian immersion. When $\tildeγ(t)=(r_1e^{i(\frac{r_2}{r_1}at)}, r_2e^{i(- \frac{r_1}{r_2}at)})$ (or $\tildeγ(t)=(r_1e^{i(\frac{r_2}{r_1}at)}, r_2e^{i(\frac{r_1}{r_2}at)})$), where $r_1$, $r_2$, and $a$ are positive constants with $r_1^2+r_2^2=1$ (or $-r_1^2+r_2^2=-1$), we call the new Lagrangian immersion a Calabi product Lagrangian imme…
We study Lagrangian immersions in the nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^6$ which are warped product manifolds of a $1$-dimensional base and a surface. Apart from the totally geodesic ones, they are either of constant sectional curvature $\frac{1}{16}$ or they satisfy equality in Chen's inequality, in which case the immersion is given explicitly.
We consider isometric immersions in arbitrary codimension of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR manifolds into the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ and generalize in a natural way the notion of associated family. We show that the existence of such deformations turns out to be very restrictive and we give a complete classification.
In this paper, using the framework of equivariant differential geometry, we study proper $SO(p+1) \times SO(q+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+q+2$) and proper $SO(p+1)$-invariant biconservative hypersurfaces into the Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$ ($n=p+2$). Moreover, we show that, in these two classes of invariant families, there exists no proper biharmonic immersion.
Motivated by the beautiful theory and the rich applications of harmonic conformal immersions and conformal immersions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces, we study biharmonic conformal immersions of surfaces into a generic 3-manifold. We first derive an invariant equation for such immersions, we then try to answer the question, "what surfaces can be biharmonically conformally immersed into Euclidean 3-space?" We prove that a circular cylinder is the only CMC surface that can be biharmonically conformally immersed into a Euclidean 3-space; We obtain a classification of biharmonic conforma…
Isometric immersions of constant curvature one metrics on the 2-sphere with two conical singularities into Euclidean 3-space: A partial solution to the Gálvez-Hauswirth-Mira problem
In this note we prove a simple relation between the mean curvature form, symplectic area, and the Maslov class of a Lagrangian immersion in a Kähler-Einstein manifold. An immediate consequence is that in Kähler-Einstein manifolds with positive scalar curvature, minimal Lagrangian immersions are monotone.
We use a new method to give conditions for the existence of a local isometric immersion of a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$, for a given $n$ and $k$. These equate to the (local) existence of a $k$-tuple of scalar fields on the manifold, satisfying a certain non-linear equation involving the Riemannian curvature tensor of $M$. Setting $k=1$, we proceed to recover the fundamental theorem of hypersurfaces. In the case of manifolds of positive sectional curvature and $n\geq 3$, we reduce the solvability of the Gauss and Codazzi equations to the cancelation of a set of obstructio…
Using a bigraded differential complex depending on the CR and pseudohermitian structure, we give a characterization of three-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex pseudo-hermitian CR-manifolds isometrically immersed in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of an integral representation of Weierstrass type. Restricting to the case of immersions in $\mathbb{R}^4$, we study harmonicity conditions for such immersions and give a complete classification of CR-pluriharmonic immersions.
We establish area bounds for two-dimensional immersions in R^3 and R^n. Namely, for μ-stable immersions in R^3 (R^n), for graphs in $\mathbb R^3$ which solve quasilinear equations in divergence form, and for graphs which are critical for Fermat-type variational problems in R^n.
We develop an approach to affine symplectic invariant geometry of Lagrangian surfaces by the method of moving frames. The fundamental invariants of elliptic Lagrangian immersions in affine symplectic four-space are derived together with their integrability equations. The invariant setup is applied to discuss the question of symplectic applicability for elliptic Lagrangian immersions. Explicit examples are considered.
For Lorentzian 2-manifolds $(Σ_1,g_1)$ and $(Σ_2,g_2)$ we consider the two product para-Kähler structures $(G^ε,J,Ω^ε)$ defined on the product four manifold $Σ_1\timesΣ_2$, with $ε=\pm 1$. We show that the metric $G^ε$ is locally conformally flat (resp. Einstein) if and only if the Gauss curvatures $κ_1,κ_2$ of $g_1,g_2$, respectively, are both constants satisfying $κ_1=-εκ_2$ (resp. $κ_1=εκ_2$). We give the conditions on the Gauss curvatures for which every Lagrangian surface with parallel mean curvature vector is the product $γ_1\timesγ_2\subsetΣ_1\timesΣ_2$, where $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ are curves…
The notion of ideal immersions was introduced by the author in 1990s. Roughly speaking, an ideal immersion of a Riemannian manifold into a real space form is a nice isometric immersion which produces the least possible amount of tension from the ambient space at each point. In this paper, we classify all ideal hypersurfaces with two distinct principal curvatures in the Euclidean 4-space $\mathbb E^4$. Moreover, we prove that such ideal hypersurfaces are always rigid. Furthermore, we show that non-minimal ideal hypersurfaces with three distinct principal curvatures in $\mathbb E^4$ are also rig…
In this note, we give natural extensions to cylinders and tori of a classical result due to T. Takahashi about minimal immersions into spheres. More precisely, we deal with Euclidean isometric immersions whose projections in R^N satisfy a spectral condition of their Laplacian.
The complex projective space $\mathbb C P^2$ of complex dimension $2$ has a Spin$^c$ structure carrying Kählerian Killing spinors. The restriction of one of these Kählerian Killing spinors to a surface $M^2$ characterizes the isometric immersion of $M^2$ into $\mathbb C P^2$ if the immersion is either Lagrangian or complex.
The edge of torn elastic sheets and growing leaves often form a hierarchical buckling pattern. Within non-Euclidean plate theory this complex morphology can be understood as low bending energy isometric immersions of hyperbolic Riemannian metrics. With this motivation we study the isometric immersion problem in strip and disk geometries. By finding explicit piecewise smooth solutions of hyperbolic Monge-Ampere equations on a strip, we show there exist periodic isometric immersions of hyperbolic surfaces in the small slope regime. We extend these solutions to exact isometric immersions through …
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+\ell}$, $n \geq 5$, denote a conformal immersion into Euclidean space with codimension $\ell$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n$ and free of flat points. For codimensions $\ell=1,2$ we show that such a submanifold can always be locally obtained in a rather simple way, namely, from an isometric immersion of the Kaehler manifold $M^{2n}$ into either $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$, the latter being a class of submanifolds already extensively studied.
We classify hypersurfaces of rank two of Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$ that admit genuine isometric deformations in $\R^{n+2}$. That an isometric immersion $\hat f\colon\,M^n\to\R^{n+2}$ is a genuine isometric deformation of a hypersurface $f\colon\, M^n\to\R^{n+1}$ means that $\hat f$ is nowhere a composition $\hat f=\hat F\circ f$, where $\hat F\colon\,V\subset \R^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ is an isometric immersion of an open subset $V$ containing $f(M)$.
In this paper, for an immersion $f$ of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ into $(n+d)$-Euclidean space we give a sufficient condition on $f$ so that, in case $d\leq 5$, any immersion $g$ of $M$ into $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space that induces on $M$ a metric that is conformal to the metric induced by $f$ is locally obtained, in a dense subset of $M$, by a composition of $f$ and a conformal immersion from an open subset of $(n+d)$-Euclidean space into an open subset of $(n+d+1)$-Euclidean space. Our result extends a theorem for hypersurfaces due to M. Dajczer and E. Vergasta. The restriction…
Several characterizations of umbilic points of submanifolds in arbitrary Riemannian and Lorentzian manifolds are given. As a consequence, we obtain new characterizations of spheres in the Euclidean space and of hyperbolic spaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski space. We also prove the Lorentzian version of a classical result by Cartan.
We investigate isometric immersions of disks with constant negative curvature into $\mathbb{R}^3$, and the minimizers for the bending energy, i.e. the $L^2$ norm of the principal curvatures over the class of $W^{2,2}$ isometric immersions. We show the existence of smooth immersions of arbitrarily large geodesic balls in $\mathbb{H}^2$ into $\mathbb{R}^3$. In elucidating the connection between these immersions and the non-existence/singularity results of Hilbert and Amsler, we obtain a lower bound for the $L^\infty$ norm of the principal curvatures for such smooth isometric immersions. We also …
In this paper, we investigate minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space with positive index of relative nullity. Let $M^m$ be a complete Riemannian manifold and let $f\colon M^m\to\R^n$ be a minimal isometric immersion with index of relative nullity at least $m-2$ at any point. We show that if the Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Laplacian holds on $M^m$, for instance, if the scalar curvature of $M^m$ does not decrease to $-\infty$ too fast or if the immersion $f$ is proper, then the submanifold must be a cylinder over a minimal surface.
This paper studies conformal biharmonic immersions. We first study the transformations of Jacobi operator and the bitension field under conformal change of metrics. We then obtain an invariant equation for a conformal biharmonic immersion of a surface into Euclidean 3-space. As applications, we construct a 2-parameter family of non-minimal conformal biharmonic immersions of cylinder into $\r^3$ and some examples of conformal biharmonic immersions of 4-dimensional Euclidean space into sphere and hyperbolic space thus provide many simple examples of proper biharmonic maps with rich geometric mea…
The edges of torn plastic sheets and growing leaves often display hierarchical buckling patterns. We show that this complex morphology (i) emerges even in zero strain configurations, and (ii) is driven by a competition between the two principal curvatures, rather than between bending and stretching. We identify the key role of branch-point (or "monkey-saddle") singularities in generating complex wrinkling patterns in isometric immersions, and show how they arise naturally from minimizing the elastic energy.
We give a loop group formulation for the problem of isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M_{c,r}^m$, of dimension $m$, constant sectional curvature $c \neq 0$, and signature $r$, into the pseudo-Euclidean space $\real_s^{m+k}$, of signature $s\geq r$. In fact these immersions are obtained canonically from the loop group maps corresponding to isometric immersions of the same manifold into a pseudo-Riemannian sphere or hyperbolic space $S_s^{m+k}$ or $H_s^{m+k}$, which have previously been studied. A simple formula is given for obtaining …
A conformal map from a Riemann surface to a Euclidean space of dimension greater than or equal to three is explained by using the Clifford algebra, in a similar fashion to quaternionic holomorphic geometry of surfaces in the Euclidean three- or four-space. The Weierstrass representation, the spin transform, the Darboux transforms, surfaces of parallel mean curvature vector, families of flat connections associated with a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a sphere are explained. The degree of the spinor bundle associated with a conformal immersion is calculated. Analogues of a polar surface…
We prove that if an RCD space has a regular isometric immersion in a Euclidean space, then the immersion is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map. This result leads us to prove that if a compact non-collapsed RCD space has an isometric immersion in a Euclidean space via an eigenmap, then the eigenmap is a locally bi-Lipschitz embedding map to a sphere, which generalizes a fundamental theorem of Takahashi in submanifold theory to a non-smooth setting. Applications of these results include a topological sphere theorem and topological finiteness theorems, which are new even for closed Riemannian m…
We associate a natural $λ$-family ($λ\in \R \setminus \{0\} $) of flat Lagrangian immersions in $\C^n$ with non-degenerate normal bundle to any given one. We prove that the structure equations for such immersions admit the same Lax pair as the first order integrable system associated to the symmetric space $\frac{\U(n) \ltimes \C^n}{\OO(n) \ltimes \R^n}$. An interesting observation is that the family degenerates to an Egoroff net on $\R^n$ when $λ\to 0$. We construct an action of a rational loop group on such immersions by identifying its generators and computing their dressing actions. The ac…
We study the problem posed by F. Burstall of developing a theory of isothermic Euclidean submanifolds of dimension greater than or equal to three. As a natural extension of the definition in the surface case, we call a Euclidean submanifold {\it isothermic} if it is locally the image of a conformal immersion of a Riemannian product of Riemannian manifolds whose second fundamental form is adapted to the product net of the manifold. Our main result is a complete classification of all such conformal immersions of Riemannian products of dimension greater than or equal to three. We derive several c…
It is known that all weakly conformal Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian immersions of tori in the complex projective plane may be constructed by methods from integrable systems theory. This article describes the precise details of a construction which leads to a form of classification. The immersion is encoded as spectral data in a similar manner to the case of minimal Lagrangian tori in the complex projective plane, but the details require a careful treatment of both the "dressing construction" and the spectral data to deal with a loop of flat connexions which is quadratic in the loop paramet…
In this paper we introduce and investigate a new notion of flexibility for domains in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb R^n$ for $n\ge 3$ in terms of minimal surfaces which they contain. A domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb R^n$ is said to be flexible if every conformal minimal immersion $U\toΩ$ from a Runge domain $U$ in an open conformal surface $M$ can be approximated uniformly on compacts, with interpolation on any given finite set, by conformal minimal immersion $M\to Ω$. Together with hyperbolicity phenomena considered in recent works, this extends the dichotomy between flexibility and rigidity from complex…
In this paper, following Sullivan, Kusner, and Schmitt, we study conformal immersions of Riemann surfaces into the three-dimensional Euclidean space. Regarding such immersions as special bundle maps from the tangent bundle of the surface to the cotangent bundle of the 2-dimensional sphere, we generalize the classical Weierstrass representation of minimal surfaces to the case of arbitrary conformal immersions. We study how such an immersion gives rise to a spin structure on the surface together with a pair of spinors and how the immersion itself can be studied by means of these spinors.
We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagran…
We propose a new method for the construction of Hamiltonian-minimal and minimal Lagrangian immersions of some manifolds in $C^n$ and in $CP^n$. By this method one can construct, in particular, immersions of such manifolds as the generalized Klein's bottle $K^n$, the multidimensional torus, $K^{n-1}\times S^1$, $S^{n-1}\times S^1$, and others. In some cases these immersions are embeddings. For example, it is possible to embed the following manifolds: $K^{2n+1},$ $S^{2n+1}\times S^1$, $K^{2n+1}\times S^1$, $S^{2n+1}\times S^1\times S^1$.
We construct an unbounded representative for the shriek class associated to the embeddings of spheres into Euclidean space. We equip this unbounded Kasparov cycle with a connection and compute the unbounded Kasparov product with the Dirac operator on $\mathbb R^{n+1}$. We find that the resulting spectral triple for the algebra $C(\mathbb S^n)$ differs from the Dirac operator on the round sphere by a so-called index cycle, whose class in $KK_0(\mathbb C, \mathbb C)$ represents the multiplicative unit. At all points we check that our construction involving the unbounded Kasparov product is compa…
In this paper, we investigate Lagrangian submanifolds in the nearly Kaehler $S^3 \times S^3$. We construct a new example which is a at Lagrangian torus. We give a complete classification of all the Lagrangian immersions of spaces of constant sectional curvature in the nearly Kaehler $S^3\times S^3$.
We construct smooth families of compact special Lagrangian submanifolds embedded in some toric hyper-K\"ahler manifolds, which never become holomorphic Lagrangian submanifolds via any hyper-Kähler rotations. These families converge to special Lagrangian immersions with self-intersection points in the sense of current. To construct them, we apply the desingularization method developed by Joyce.
We discuss generalizations of the well-known theorem of Hilbert that there is no complete isometric immersion of the hyperbolic plane into Euclidean 3-space. We show that this problem is expressed very naturally as the question of the existence of certain homotheties of reflective submanifolds of a symmetric space. As such, we conclude that the only other (non-compact) cases to which this theorem could generalize are the problem of isometric immersions with flat normal bundle of the hyperbolic space $H^n$ into a Euclidean space $E^{n+k}$, $n \geq 2$, and the problem of Lagrangian isometric imm…
The isometric immersion of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds or surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space is a fundamental problem in differential geometry. When the Gauss curvature is negative, the isometric immersion problem is considered in this paper through the Gauss-Codazzi system for the second fundamental forms. It is shown that if the Gauss curvature satisfies an integrability condition, the surface has a global smooth isometric immersion in the three-dimensional Euclidean space even if the Gauss curvature decays very slowly at infinity. The new idea of the proof is based o…
Following earlier work of Loftin-McIntosh, we study minimal Lagrangian immersions of the universal cover of a closed surface (of genus at least 2) into CH2, with prescribed data of a conformal structure plus a holomorphic cubic differential. We show existence and non-uniqueness of such minimal Lagrangian immersions. We also establish the surface area with respect to the induced metric as a Weil-Petersson potential function for the space of holomorphic cubic differentials on the Riemann surface.
The authors obtained the classification theorem for Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces using the idea of quaternion extensors.
Using the idea of special Legendre curves, the authors obtained the explicit description of flat Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces.
We show that closed, immersed, minimal hypersurfaces in a compact symmetric space satisfy a lower bound on the index plus nullity, which depends linearly on their first Betti number. Moreover, if either the minimal hypersurface satisfies a certain genericity condition, or if the ambient space is a product of two CROSSes, we improve this to a lower bound on the index alone, which is affine in the first Betti number. To prove these, we introduce a generalization of isometric immersions in Euclidean space. Compact symmetric spaces admit (and in fact are characterized by) such a structure with ske…
We study the foliation space of complex and invariant (by torsion of intrinsic Hermitian connection) umbilic distribution on an isometric immersion from a nearly Kähler manifold $M$ into the Euclidean space. Under suitable conditions this leaf space is nearly Kähler and $M$ can be decomposed into a product of this leaf space and a 6-dimensional locally homogeneous nearly Kähler manifold.
We consider isometric immersions of complete connected Riemannian manifolds into space forms of nonzero constant curvature. We prove that if such an immersion is compact and has semi-definite second fundamental form, then it is an embedding with codimension one, its image bounds a convex set, and it is rigid. This result generalizes previous ones by M. do Carmo and E. Lima, as well as by M. do Carmo and F. Warner. It also settles affirmatively a conjecture by do Carmo and Warner. We establish a similar result for complete isometric immersions satisfying a stronger condition on the second funda…
For a unit vector field on a closed immersed Euclidean hypersurface $M^{2n+1}$, $n\geq 1$, we exhibit a nontrivial lower bound for its energy which depends on the degree of the Gauss map of the immersion. When the hypersurface is the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$, immersed with degree one, this lower bound corresponds to a well established value from the literature. We introduce a list of functionals $\mathcal{B}_k$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M^{m}$, $1\leq k\leq m$, and show that, when the underlying manifold is a closed hypersurface, these functionals possess similar properties rega…
We generalize the spinorial characterization of isometric immersions of surfaces in R^3 given by T. Friedrich (On the spinor representation of surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, J. Geom. Phys. 28 (1998)) to surfaces in S^3 and H^3. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a special spinor field as a second fundamental form. It turns out that such a characterization of isometric immersions in terms of a special section of the spinor bundle also holds in the case of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean 4-space.
In this paper we investigate surfaces in $\mathbb C P^2$ without complex points and characterize the minimal surfaces without complex points and the minimal Lagrangian surfaces by Ruh-Vilms type theorems. We also discuss the liftability of an immersion from a surface to $\mathbb C P^2$ into $S^5$ in Appendix A.
