We construct a infinite-dimensional manifold structure adapted to analytic Lie pseudogroups of infinite type. More precisely, we prove that any isotropy subgroup of an analytic Lie pseudogroup of infinite type is a regular infinite-dimensional Lie group, modelled on a locally convex strict inductive limit of Banach spaces. This is an infinite-dimensional generalization to the case of Lie pseudogroups of the classical second fundamental theorem of Lie.
We present a modern formulation of Élie Cartan's structure theory for Lie pseudogroups and prove a reduction theorem that clarifies the role of Cartan's systatic system. The paper is divided into three parts. In part one, using notions coming from the theory of Lie groupoids and algebroids, we introduce the framework of Cartan algebroids and realizations, structures that encode Cartan's structure equations and notion of a pseudogroup in normal form. In part two, we present a novel proof of Cartan's Second Fundamental Theorem, which states that any Lie pseudogroup is equivalent to a pseudogroup…
The action of a Lie pseudogroup $G$ on a smooth manifold $M$ induces a prolonged pseudogroup action on the jet spaces $J^n$ of submanifolds of $M$. We prove in this paper that both the local and global freeness of the action of $G$ on $J^n$ persist under prolongation in the jet order $n$. Our results underlie the construction of complete moving frames and, indirectly, their applications in the identification and analysis of the various invariant objects for the pseudogroup action on $J^\infty$.
A multiplicatively closed, horizontal foliation on a Lie groupoid may be viewed as a "pseudoaction" on the base manifold $M$. A pseudoaction generates a pseudogroup of transformations of $M$ in the same way an ordinary Lie group action generates a transformation group. Infinitesimalizing a pseudoaction, one obtains the action of a Lie algebra on $M$, possibly twisted. A global converse to Lie's third theorem proven here states that every twisted Lie algebra action is integrated by a pseudoaction. When the twisted Lie algebra action is complete it integrates to a twisted Lie group action, accor…
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. Within the framework of Lie groupoids equipped with a special multiplicative form - called Pfaffian groupoids - we focus on principal bibundles and Morita equivalences. In particular, we discuss in details the notion of Pfaffian Morita equivalence, its relation to the gauge construction in the Pfaffian setting, and its interactions with principal actions. We briefly present some examples and applications to transiti…
We associate to each infinite primitive Lie pseudogroup a Hopf algebra of `transverse symmetries', by refining a procedure due to Connes and the first author in the case of the general pseudogroup. The affiliated Hopf algebra can be viewed as a `quantum group' counterpart of the infinite-dimensional primitive Lie algebra of the pseudogroup. It is first constructed via its action on the étale groupoid associated to the pseudogroup, and then realized as a bicrossed product of a universal enveloping algebra by a Hopf algebra of regular functions on a formal group. The bicrossed product structure …
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. We encode geometric structures induced by transitive Lie pseudogroups into principal $G$-bundles equipped with a transversally parallelisable foliation generated by a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, called Cartan bundles. Our approach is complementary to arXiv:1911.13147 and is based on Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids. After identifying the main examples and properties, we develop a notion of flatness with respect…
Let (M,g) be a 3-dimensional compact connected real analytic Lorentz manifold and suppose that g is locally homogeneous on a non-empty open set in M (the pseudogroup of local isometries of g has an open orbit). Then we prove that g is locally homogeneous on M (the pseudogroup of local isometries is transitive on M).
We discuss Lie-Tresse theorem for the pseudogroup of diffeomorphisms acting on the space of (pseudo-)Riemannian metrics, and relate this to existence of Killing vector fields. Then we discuss the impact of symmetry in the general case.
Einstein-Weyl structures on a three-dimensional manifold $M$ is given by a system $E$ of PDEs on sections of a bundle over $M$. This system is invariant under the Lie pseudogroup $G$ of local diffeomorphisms on $M$. Two Einstein-Weyl structures are locally equivalent if there exists a local diffeomorphism taking one to the other. Our goal is to describe the quotient equation $E/G$ whose solutions correspond to nonequivalent Einstein-Weyl structures. The approach uses symmetries of the Manakov-Santini integrable system and the action of the corresponding Lie pseudogroup.
We give a complete list of normal forms for the 2-dimensional metrics that admit a transitive Lie pseudogroup of geodesic-preserving transformations and we show that these normal forms are mutually non-isometric. This solves a problem posed by Sophus Lie.
Starting from a relativistic phenomenology of anyons in crystals, we discuss the concept of relativistic interaction and the need to unify electromagnetism and gravitation within the Spencer cohomology of Lie equations. Then, from the sophisticated non-linear Spencer complex of the Poincaré and conformal Lie pseudogroups, we build up a non-linear relative complex assigned to a gauge sequence for electromagnetic and gravitational potentials and fields. Then, using a conformally equivariant Lagrangian density, we deduce, first, the two first steps of its corresponding Janet complex and second, t…
A linear Lie rack structure on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ is a Lie rack operation $(x,y)\mapsto x\rhd y$ pointed at the origin and such that for any $x$, the left translation $\mathrm{L}_x:y\mapsto \mathrm{L}_x(y)= x\rhd y$ is linear. A linear Lie rack operation $\rhd$ is called analytic if for any $x,y\in V$, \[ x\rhd y=y+\sum_{n=1}^\infty A_{n,1}(x,\ldots,x,y), \]where $A_{n,1}:V\times\ldots\times V\Leftarrow V$ is an $n+1$-multilinear map symmetric in the $n$ first arguments. In this case, $A_{1,1}$ is exactly the left Leibniz product associated to $\rhd$. Any left Leibniz algebr…
Let M be a real analytic manifold modeled on a locally convex space and K be a non-empty compact subset of M. We show that if an open neighborhood of K in M admits a complexification which is a regular topological space, then the germ of the latter (as a complex manifold) is uniquely determined. If M is regular and the complexified modeling space of M is normal, then a regular complexification exists for some neighborhood of K. For each (real or complex) analytic regular manifold M modeled on a metrizable locally convex space and Banach-Lie group H, this allows the group Germ(K,H) of germs of …
Field Theories in Physics can be formulated giving a local Lagrangian density. Locality is imposed using the infinite jet bundle. That bundle is viewed as a pro-finite dimensional smooth manifold and that point of view has been compared to different topological and Frechét structures on it. A category of local (insular) manifolds has been constructed. Noether's second theorem is reviewed and the notion of Lie pseudogroups is explored using these concepts. The L-infinity algebra of local observables is defined depending only on the cohomology of the Lagrangian (using a result in multisymplectic…
A complex Lie algebroid is a complex vector bundle over a smooth (real) manifold M with a bracket on sections and an anchor to the complexified tangent bundle of M which satisfy the usual Lie algebroid axioms. A proposal is made here to integrate analytic complex Lie algebroids by using analytic continuation to a complexification of M and integration to a holomorphic groupoid. A collection of diverse examples reveal that the holomorphic stacks presented by these groupoids tend to coincide with known objects associated to structures in complex geometry. This suggests that the object integrating…
We presented a systematic treatment of a Hilbert criterion for stability theory for an action of a real reductive group $G$ on a real submanifold $X$ of a Kähler manifold $Z$. More precisely, we suppose the action of a compact connected Lie group $U$ with Lie algebra $\mathfrak{u}$ extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group $U^{\mathbb C}$ and that the $U$-action on $Z$ is Hamiltonian. If $G\subset U^{\mathbb C}$ is closed and compatible, there is a corresponding gradient map $μ_\mathfrak{p} : X\longrightarrow \mathfrak{p}$, where $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak k \oplus \mathfrak…
A survey of real differential geometry and loop theory is given in order to introduce the construction of an analytic loop associated to p-adic differential manifold.
In a previous article, analytic 1-submanifolds had been classified w.r.t. their symmetry under a given regular and separately analytic Lie group action on an analytic manifold. It was shown that such an analytic 1-submanifold is either free or (via the exponential map) analytically diffeomorphic to the unit circle or an interval. In this paper, we show that each free analytic 1-submanifold is discretely generated by the symmetry group, i.e., naturally decomposes into countably many symmetry free segments that are mutually and uniquely related by the Lie group action. This is proven under the a…
We construct a smooth Lie group structure on the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms of a compact analytic manifold with corners. This generalises the known analogous results in the situation where the real analytic manifold has no corners. Additionally our approach uses a different construction.
We show that one can lift locally real analytic curves from the orbit space of a compact Lie group representation, and that one can lift smooth curves even globally, but under an assumption.
The main result of this paper is the conformal flatness of real-analytic compact Lorentz manifolds of dimension at least $3$ admitting a conformal essential (i.e. conformal, but not isometric) action of a Lie group locally isomorphic to PSL(2,R). It is established by using a general result of M. Gromov on local isometries of real-analytic $A$-rigid geometric structures. As corollary, we deduce the same conclusion for conformal essential actions of connected semi-simple Lie groups on real-analytic compact Lorentz manifolds. This work is a contribution to the understanding of the Lorentzian vers…
Analytic curves are classified w.r.t. their symmetry under a regular and separately analytic Lie group action on an analytic manifold. We show that an analytic curve is either exponential or splits into countably many analytic immersive curves, each of them discretely generated by the symmetry group (i.e., each such curve naturally decomposes into countably many symmetry free subcurves that are mutually and uniquely related by the Lie group action). We additionally extend the classification result to the analytic 1-submanifold case. Specifically, we show that an analytic 1-submanifold is eithe…
Results on characterization of manifolds in terms of certain Lie algebras growing on them, especially Lie algebras of differential operators, are reviewed and extended. In particular, we prove that a smooth (real-analytic, Stein) manifold is characterized by the corresponding Lie algebra of linear differential operators, i.e. isomorphisms of such Lie algebras are induced by the appropriate class of diffeomorphisms of the underlaying manifolds.
We construct an infinite dimensional real analytic manifold structure for the space of real analytic mappings from a compact manifold to a locally convex manifold. Here a map is real analytic if it extends to a holomorphic map on some neighbourhood of the complexification of its domain. As is well known the construction turns the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms into a smooth locally convex Lie group. We prove then that the diffeomorphism group is regular in the sense of Milnor. In the inequivalent "convenient setting of calculus" the real analytic diffeomorphisms even form a real analyt…
It is a classical result that any complex analytic Lie supergroup $\mathcal{G}$ is split \cite{kosz}, that is its structure sheaf is isomorphic to the structure sheaf of a certain vector bundle. However, there do exist non-split complex analytic homogeneous supermanifolds. We study the question how to find out whether a complex analytic homogeneous supermanifold is split or non-split. Our main result is a description of left invariant gradings on a complex analytic homogeneous supermanifold $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{H}$ in the terms of $\mathcal{H}$-invariants. As a corollary to our investigations…
Given any real-analytic CR manifold M, we provide general conditions on M guaranteeing that the group of all its global real-analytic CR automorphisms is a Lie group (in an appropriate topology). Our conditions are in particular satisfied when M is an arbitrary compact real-analytic hypersurface embedded in some Stein manifold.
Motivated by the interesting and yet scattered developments in representation theory of Banach-Lie groups, we discuss several functional analytic issues which should underlie the notion of infinite-dimensional reductive Lie group: norm ideals, triangular integrals, operator factorizations, and amenability.
For any Lie groupoid we construct an analytic index morphism taking values in a modified $K-theory$ group which involves the convolution algebra of compactly supported smooth functions over the groupoid. The construction is performed by using the deformation algebra of smooth functions over the tangent groupoid constructed in \cite{Ca2}. This allows in particular to prove a more primitive version of the Connes-Skandalis Longitudinal index Theorem for foliations, that is, an index theorem taking values in a group which pairs with Cyclic cocycles. As other application, for $D$ a $\gr-$PDO ellipt…
In this note we prove that an analytic symplectic action of a semisimple Lie algebra can be locally linearized in Darboux coordinates. This result yields simultaneous analytic linearization for Hamiltonian vector fields in a neighbourhood of a common zero. We also provide an example of smooth non-linearizable Hamiltonian action with semisimple linear part. The smooth analogue only holds if the semisimple Lie algebra is of compact type. An analytic equivariant b-Darboux theorem for b-Poisson manifolds and an analytic equivariant Weinstein splitting theorem for general Poisson manifolds are also…
A general theory of rigid completely integrable analytic partial differential equations is endeavoured. The tube over the light cone in C^3 is shown to be the unique model (up to biholomorphisms) having CR automorphism group of maximal dimension equal to 10. Explicit formulas for the Lie prolongation of vector fields to jets spaces are derived.
We prove that any real-analytic, volume-preserving action of a lattice $Γ$ in a simple Lie group with $\Qrank(Γ)\geq 7$ on a closed 4-manifold of nonzero Euler characteristic factors through a finite group action.
We present a local and constructive differential geometric description of finite-dimensional solvable and transitive Lie algebras of vector fields. We show that it implies a Lie's conjecture for such Lie algebras. Also infinite-dimensional analytical solvable and transitive Lie algebras of vector fields whose derivative ideal is nilpotent can be adapted to this scheme.
