If $(X,J)$ is an almost complex manifold, then a function $u$ is said to be plurisubharmonic on $X$ if it is upper semi-continuous and its restriction to every local pseudo-holomorphic curve is subharmonic. As in the complex case, it is conjectured that plurisubharmonicity is equivalent to the fact that the $(1,1)$-current $i\partial_{_J}\bar{\partial}_{_J}u$ is positive, (the $(1,1)$-current $i\partial_{_J}\bar{\partial}_{_J}u$ need not be closed here). The conjecture is trivial if $u$ is of class ${\cal C}^2$. The result is elementary in the complex integrable case because the operator $i\partial_{_J}\bar{\partial}_{_J}$ can be written as an operator with constant coefficients in complex coordinates. Hence the positivity of the current is preserved by regularising with usual convolution kernels. This is not possible in the almost complex non integrable case and the proof of the result requires a much more intrinsic study. In this chapter we prove the necessity of the positivity of the $(1,1)$-current $i\partial_{_J}\bar{\partial}_{_J}u$. We prove also the sufficiency of the positivity in the particular case of an upper semi-continuous function $f$ which is continuous in the complement of the singular locus $f^{-1}(-\infty)$. For the proof of the sufficiency of the positivity in the general case of a real distribution $u$, we suggest a method depending on a rather delicate regularisation argument introduced by Demailly. This method consists of regularing the function $u$ by means of the flow induced by a Chern connection on the tangent bundle of the almost complex manifold.
In this paper, we study global properties of continuous plurisubharmonic functions on complete noncompact Kähler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature and their applications to the structure of such manifolds. We prove that continuous plurisubharmonic functions with reasonable growth rate on such manifolds can be approximated by smooth plurisubharmonic functions through the heat flow deformation. Optimal Liouville type theorem for the plurisubharmonic functions as well as a splitting theorem in terms of harmonic functions and holomorphic functions are established. The results are th…
A hypercomplex manifold is a manifold equipped with a triple of complex structures $I, J, K$ satisfying the quaternionic relations. We define a quaternionic analogue of plurisubharmonic functions on hypercomplex manifolds, and interpret these functions geometrically as potentials of HKT (hyperkähler with torsion) metrics, and prove a quaternionic analogue of A.D. Aleksandrov and Chern-Levine-Nirenberg theorems.
We prove the existence of plurisubharmonic functions with prescribed logarithmic singularities on complex 3-folds equipped with a nef class of positive volume. We prove the same result for rational classes on Moishezon n-folds.
Consider a compact Kähler manifold $(X,ω)$ and the space $\cal E(X,ω)=\cal E$ of $ω$--plurisubharmonic functions of full Monge--Ampère mass on it. We introduce a quantity $ρ[u,v]$ to measure the distance between $u, v\in\cal E$; $ρ[u,v]$ is not a number but rather a decreasing function on a certain interval $(0,V)\subset\mathbb R$. We explore properties of $ρ[u,v]$, and using them we study Lagrangians and associated energy spaces of $ω$--plurisubharmonic functions. Many results here generalize Darvas's findings about his metrics $d_χ$.
We develop a new approach to $L^{\infty}$-a priori estimates for degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equations on complex manifolds. It only relies on compactness and envelopes properties of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions. Our method allows one to obtain new and efficient proofs of several fundamental results in Kähler geometry as we explain in this article. In a sequel we shall explain how this approach also applies to the hermitian setting producing new relative a priori bounds, as well as existence results.
We show that if $\{M_t\}_{t\in Δ}$ is a polarized family of compact Kähler manifolds over the open unit disk $Δ$, if $N$ is a Riemannian manifold of nonpositive complexified sectional curvature, and if $\{ϕ_t:M_t\to N\}_{t\in Δ}$ is a smooth family of pluriharmonic maps, then the Dirichlet energy $E(ϕ_t)$ is a subharmonic function of $t\inΔ$.
A C^2 function on C^n is called (n-1)-plurisubharmonic in the sense of Harvey-Lawson if the sum of any n-1 eigenvalues of its complex Hessian is nonnegative. We show that the associated Monge-Ampere equation can be solved on any compact Kahler manifold. As a consequence we prove the existence of solutions to an equation of Fu-Wang-Wu, giving Calabi-Yau theorems for balanced, Gauduchon and strongly Gauduchon metrics on compact Kahler manifolds.
We develop a new approach to $L^{\infty}$-a priori estimates for degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equations on complex manifolds. It only relies on compactness and envelopes properties of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions. In a prequel \cite{GL21a} we have shown how this method allows one to obtain new and efficient proofs of several fundamental results in Kähler geometry. In \cite{GL21b} we have studied the behavior of Monge-Ampère volumes on hermitian manifolds. We extend here the techniques of \cite{GL21a} to the hermitian setting and use the bounds established in \cite{GL21b}, producing new …
This note establishes smooth approximation from above for J-plurisubharmonic functions on an almost complex manifold (X,J). The following theorem is proved. Suppose X is J-pseudoconvex, i.e., X admits a smooth strictly J-plurisubharmonic exhaustion function. Let u be an (upper semi-continuous) J-plurisubharmonic function on X. Then there exists a sequence {u_j} of smooth, strictly J-plurisubharmonic functions point-wise decreasing down to u. On any almost complex manifold (X,J) each point has a fundamental neighborhood system of J-pseudoconvex domains, and so the theorem above establishes loca…
In this paper we introduce and study the notion of plurisubharmonic functions in calibrated geometry. These functions generalize the classical plurisubharmonic functions from complex geometry and enjoy many of their important properties. Moreover, they exist in abundance whereas the corresponding pluriharmonics are generally quite scarce. A number of the results established in complex analysis via plurisubharmonic functions are extended to calibrated manifolds. This paper investigates, in depth, questions of: pseudo-convexity and cores, positive phi-currents, Duval-Sibony Duality, and boundari…
We establish plurisubharmonicity of the envelope of Poisson and Lelong functionals on almost complex manifolds. That is, we generalize the corresponding results for complex manifolds and almost complex manifolds of complex dimension two. We also provide some applications to the regularization of J-plurisubharmonic functions and to the characterization of compact psh-hulls by pseudoholomorphic discs.
We show that a positive Borel measure of positive finite total mass, on compact Hermitian manifolds, admits a Holder continuous quasi-plurisubharmonic solution to the Monge-Ampere equation if and only if it is dominated locally by Monge-Ampere measures of Holder continuous plurisubharmonic functions.
We introduce a wide subclass ${\cal F}(X,ω)$ of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions in a compact Kähler manifold, on which the complex Monge-Ampère operator is well-defined and the convergence theorem is valid. We also prove that ${\cal F}(X,ω)$ is a convex cone and includes all quasi-plurisubharmonic functions which are in the Cegrell class.
We prove a Liouville theorem for the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaelher manifolds. As the applications, we prove a splitting theorem for complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative biscetional curvature in terms of the linear growth harmonic functions and a optomal gap theorem for such manifolds.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a Kahler manifold. An integrable function on M is called $ω^q$-plurisubharmonic if it is subharmonic on all q-dimensional complex subvarieties. We prove that a smooth $ω^q$-plurisubharmonic function is q-convex. A continuous $ω^q$-plurisubharmonic function admits a local approximation by smooth, $ω^q$-plurisubharmonic functions. For any closed subvariety $Z\subset M$, $\dim Z < q$, there exists a strictly $ω^q$-plurisubharmonic function in a neighbourhood of $Z$ (this result is known for q-convex functions). This theorem is used to give a new proof of Sibony's lemma on integrabi…
We study weak quasi-plurisubharmonic solutions to the Dirichlet problem for the complex Monge-Amère equation on a general Hermitian manifold with non-empty boundary. We prove optimal subsolution theorems: for bounded and Hölder continuous quasi-plurisubharmonic functions. The continuity of the solution is proved for measures that well dominated by capacity, for example measures with $L^p$, $p>1$ densities, or moderate measures in the sense of Dinh-Nguyen-Sibony.
We prove a linear trace Li-Yau-Hamilton inequality for the Kaehler-Ricci flow. We then use this sharp differential inequality to study the Liouville properties of the plurisubharmonic functions on complete Kaehler manifolds with nonnegative bisectional curvature.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $θ$ a smooth closed $(1,1)$-real form representing a big cohomology class $α\in H^{1,1}(X,\R)$. The purpose of this note is to show, using pluripotential and viscosity techniques, that any $θ$-plurisubharmonic function $\f$ can be approximated from above by a decreasing sequence of continuous $θ$-plurisubharmonic functions with minimal singularities, assuming that there exists a single such function.
The purpose of this article is to present a new regularization technique of quasi-plurisubharmoinc functions on a compact Kaehler manifold. The idea is to regularize the function on local coordinate balls first, and then glue each piece together. Therefore, all the higher order terms in the complex Hessian of this regularization vanish at the center of each coordinate ball, and all the centers build a delta-net of the manifold eventually.
We make a systematic study of (quasi-)plurisubharmonic envelopes on compact Kähler manifolds, as well as on domains of $\mathbb{C}^n$, by using and extending an approximation process due to Berman [Ber13]. We show that the quasi-psh envelope of a viscosity super-solution is a pluripotential super-solution of a given complex Monge-Ampère equation. We use these ideas to solve complex Monge-Ampère equations by taking lower envelopes of super-solutions.
Recently the authors showed that there is a robust potential theory attached to any calibrated manifold (X,ϕ). In particular, on X there exist ϕ-plurisubharmonic functions, ϕ-convex domains, ϕ-convex boundaries, etc., all inter-related and having a number of good properties. In this paper we show that, in a strong sense, the plurisubharmonic functions are the polar duals of the ϕ-submanifolds, or more generally, the ϕ-currents studied in the original paper on calibrations. In particular, we establish an analogue of Duval-Sibony Duality which characterizes points in the ϕ-convex hull of a compa…
The goal of this work is to prove the regularity of certain quasi-plurisubharmonic upper envelopes. Such envelopes appear in a natural way in the construction of hermitian metrics with minimal singularities on a big line bundle over a compact complex manifold. We prove that the complex Hessian forms of these envelopes are locally bounded outside an analytic set of singularities. It is furthermore shown that a parametrized version of this result yields a priori inequalities for the solution of the Dirichlet problem for a degenerate Monge-Ampere operator; applications to geodesics in the space o…

We prove the existence of a continuous quasi-plurisubharmonic solution to the Monge-Ampère equation on a compact Hermitian manifold for a very general measre on the right hand side. We admit measures dominated by capacity in a certain manner, in particular, moderate measures studied by Dinh-Nguyen-Sibony. As a consequence, we give a characterization of measures admitting Hölder continuous quasi-plurisubharmonic potential, inspired by the work of Dinh-Nguyen.
For a bounded domain $D$ and a real number $p>0$, we denote by $A^p(D)$ the space of $L^p$ integrable holomorphic functions on $D$, equipped with the $L^p$- pseudonorm. We prove that two bounded hyperconvex domains $D_1\subset \mc^n$ and $D_2\subset \mc^m$ are biholomorphic (in particular $n=m$) if there is a linear isometry between $A^p(D_1)$ and $A^p(D_2)$ for some $0<p<2$. The same result holds for $p>2, p\neq 2,4,\cdots$, provided that the $p$-Bergman kernels on $D_1$ and $D_2$ are exhaustive. With this as a motivation, we show that, for all $p>0$, the $p$-Bergman kernel on a strongly pseu…
We obtain higher order estimates for a parabolic flow on a compact Hermitian manifold. As an application, we prove that a bounded $\hatω$-plurisubharmonic solution of an elliptic complex Monge-Ampère equation is smooth under an assumption on the background Hermitian metric $\hatω$. This generalizes a result of Székelyhidi and Tosatti on Kähler manifolds.
Let $M$ be a closed Riemann surface, $N$ a Riemannian manifold of Hermitian non-positive curvature, $f:M\to N$ a continuous map, and $E$ the function on the Teichmüller space of $M$ that assigns to a complex structure on $M$ the energy of the harmonic map homotopic to $f$. We show that $E$ is a plurisubharmonic function on the Teichmüller space of $M$. If $N$ has strictly negative Hermitian curvature, we characterize the directions in which the complex Hessian of $E$ vanishes.
Pseudo-holomorphic curves on almost complex manifolds have been much more intensely studied than their "dual" objects, the plurisubharmonic functions. These functions are defined classically by requiring that the restriction to each pseudo-holomorphic curve is subharmonic. In this paper subharmonic functions are defined by applying the viscosity approach to a version of the complex hessian which exists intrinsically on any almost complex manifold. Three theorems are proved. The first is a restriction theorem which establishes the equivalence of our definition with the "classical" definition. I…

This is an essay on potential theory for geometric plurisubharmonic functions. It begins with a given closed subset G of the Grassmann bundle $G(p,TX)$ of tangent $p$-planes to a riemannian manifold $X$. This determines a nonlinear partial differential equation which is convex but never uniformly elliptic (p < dim X). A surprising number of results in complex analysis carry over to this more general setting. The notions of: a G-submanifold, an upper semi-continuous G-plurisubharmonic function, a G-convex domain, a G-harmonic function, and a G-free submanifold, are defined. Results include a re…
Dinh--Sibony theory of tangent and density currents is a recent but powerful tool to study positive closed currents. Over twenty years ago, Alessandrini and Bassanelli initiated the theory of the Lelong number of a positive plurisubharmonic current in $\mathbb{C}^k$ along a linear subspace. Although the latter theory is intriguing, it has not yet been explored in-depth since then. Introducing the concept of the generalized Lelong numbers and studying these new numerical values, we extend both theories to a more general class of positive plurisubharmonic currents and in a more general context o…
We consider three fundamental classes of compact almost homogeneous manifolds and show that the complements of singular complex orbits in such manifolds are endowed with plurisubharmonic exhaustions satisfying complex homogeneous Monge-Ampère equations. This extends to a new family of mixed type examples various classical results on parabolic spaces and complexifications of symmetric spaces. Rigidity results on complex spaces modeled on such new examples are given.
We establish a lower estimate for the Kobayashi-Royden infinitesimal pseudometric on an almost complex manifold $(M,J)$ admitting a bounded strictly plurisubharmonic function. We apply this result to study the boundary behaviour of the metric on a strictly pseudoconvex domain in $M$ and to give a sufficient condition for the complete hyperbolicity of a domain in $(M,J)$. Finally we obtain the regularity up to the bounday of $J$-holomorphic discs attached to a totally real submanifold in $M$.
Let $(V,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold such that $V$ admits a cover by Zariski-open Stein sets with the property that $ω$ has a strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustive potential on each element of the cover. If $X\subset V$ is an analytic subvariety, we prove that any $ω|_X$-plurisubharmonic function on $X$ extends to a $ω$-plurisubharmonic function on $V$. This result generalizes a previous result of ours on the extension of singular metrics of ample line bundles. It allows one to show that any transcendental Kähler class in the real Neron-Severi space $NS_{\mathbb R}(V)$ has this extension pr…
We prove several approximation theorems of the complex Monge-Ampere operator on a compact Kahler manifold. As an application we give a new proof of a recent result of Guedj and Zeriahi on a complete description of the range of the complex Monge-Ampere operator in the class of w-plurisubharmonic functions with vanishing complex Monge-Ampere mass on all pluripolar sets. As a by-product we obtain a stability theorem of solutions of complex Monge-Ampere equations in some subclass.
Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold. We introduce and study the largest set $DMA(X,ω)$ of $ω$-plurisubharmonic (psh) functions on which the complex Monge-Ampère operator is well defined. It is much larger than the corresponding local domain of definition, though still a proper subset of the set $PSH(X,\om)$ of all $\om$-psh functions. We prove that certain twisted Monge-Ampère operators are well defined for all $ω$-psh functions. As a consequence, any $\om$-psh function with slightly attenuated singularities has finite weighted Monge-Ampère energy.
In a previous article (arXiv:2111.03143), we generalized Berndtsson's Nakano-positivity by retaining the same consequences under weaker hypotheses. In this article, we propose to further generalize our "twisted" Nakano-positivity theorem to fields of Hilbert spaces associated to possibly unbounded Stein manifolds. We achieve this result using exhaustion arguments. As direct applications, we prove $\log$-plurisubharmonic variation results for a certain class of non-trivial families of Stein manifolds.
We consider a class of fully nonlinear second order elliptic equations on Hermitian manifolds closely related to the general notion of $\bfG$-plurisubharmonicity of Harvey-Lawson and an equation treated by Székelyhidi-Tosatti-Weinkove in the proof of Gauduchon conjecture. Under fairly general assumptions we derive interior estimates and establish the existence of smooth solutions for the Dirichlet problem as well as for equations on closed manifolds.
In this paper, we establish a priori estimates for solutions of a general class of fully non-linear equations on compact almost Hermitian manifolds. As an application, we solve the complex Hessian equation and the Monge--Ampère equation for $(n-1)$-plurisubharmonic equations in the almost Hermitian setting.
Given a compact polarized manifold $(X,L)$, we introduce two new stability thresholds in terms of singularity types of global quasi-plurisubharmonic functions on $X$. We prove that in the Fano setting, the new invariants can effectively detect the K-stability of $X$. We study some functionals of geodesic rays in the space of Kähler potentials by means of the corresponding test curves. In particular, we introduce a new entropy functional of quasi-plurisubharmonic functions and relate the radial entropy functional to this new entropy functional.
We prove the existence of unique smooth solutions to the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation for $(n-1)$-quaternionic plurisubharmonic functions on a hyperKähler manifold and thus obtain solutions for the quaternionic form type equation. We derive $C^0$ estimate by establishing a Cherrier-type inequality as in Tosatti and Weinkove [22]. By adopting the approach of Dinew and Sroka [9] to our context, we obtain $C^1$ and $C^2$ estimates without assuming the flatness of underlying hyperKähler metric comparing to previous results [14].
Let M be a real analytic Riemannian manifold. An adapted complex structure on $TM$ is a complex structure on a neighborhood of the zero section such that the leaves of the Riemann foliation are complex submanifolds. This structure is called entire if it may be extended to the whole of $TM$. We prove here that the only real analytic Zoll metric on the $n$-sphere with an entire adapted complex structure on $TM$ is the round sphere. Using similar ideas, we answer a special case of an algebraization question raised by the first author, characterizing some Stein manifolds as affine algebraic in ter…
We show that any compact almost-complex manifold of complex dimension m can be pseudo-holomorphically embedded in R^(6m) equipped with a suitable almost-complex structure.
Let $Ω\subseteq M$ be a bounded domain with a smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, where $(M,J,g)$ is a compact, almost Hermitian manifold. The main result of this paper is to consider the Dirichlet problem for a complex Monge-Ampère equation on $Ω$. Under the existence of a $C^{2}$-smooth strictly $J$-plurisubharmonic ($J$-psh for short) subsolution, we can solve this Dirichlet problem. Our method is based on the properties of subsolutions which have been widely used for fully nonlinear elliptic equations over Hermitian manifolds.
A compact real analytic Riemannian manifold M admits a canonical complexification with plurisubharmonic exhaustion function satisfying the homogeneous complex Monge-Ampere equation, called a Grauert tube. From the point of view of complex analysis, several authors have considered whether a given complex manifold can arise in more than one way from this construction. We show that given a compact M and a finite exhaustion, the underlying Riemannian structure is unique. The proof uses the technique of holomorphic disks spanning two exact Lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle of M, and S…
An LCK manifold with potential is a compact quotient M of a Kahler manifold X equipped with a positive plurisubharmonic function f, such that the monodromy group acts on $X$ by holomorphic homotheties and maps f to a function proportional to f. It is known that M admits an LCK potential if and only if it can be holomorphically embedded to a Hopf manifold. We prove that any non-Vaisman LCK manifold with potential contains a complex surface with normalization biholomorphic to a Hopf surface H. Moreover, H can be chosen non-diagonal, hence, also not admitting a Vaisman structure.
Let $π:\mathcal{X}\to S$ be a holomorphic family of canonically polarized manifolds over a complex manifold $S$, and $f:\mathcal{X}\to N$ a smooth map into a Riemannian manifold $N$. Consider the energy function $E: S\to \mathbb{R}$ that assigns $z\in S$ to the Dirichlet energy of the map $f|_{\mathcal{X}_z}:\mathcal{X}_z\to N$, where $\mathcal{X}_z=π^{-1}(z)$ is the fiber over $z$. In this article, we compute the second variation formula for the energy function $E$. As a result, we show that if $N$ is of non-positive complexified sectional curvature and every map $f|_{\mathcal{X}_z}:\mathcal{…
In this paper, we establish second order estimates for a general class of fully nonlinear equations with linear gradient terms on compact almost Hermitian manifolds. As an application, we first prove the existence of solutions for the Monge-Ampère equation with linear gradient terms for $(n-1)$-plurisubharmonic functions, originated from Gaudochon conjecture, in the almost Hermitian setting. Second, we solve the Monge-Ampère equation and Hessian equations with linear gradient terms. Third, we give the $C^{\infty}$ a priori estimates for the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation with supercrit…
We derive some consequences of the Liouville theorem for plurisubharmonic functions of L.-F. Tam and the author. The first result provides a nonlinear version of the complex splitting theorem (which splits off a factor of $\mathbb{C}$ isometrically from the simply-connected Kähler manifold with nonnegative bisectional curvature and a linear growth holomorphic function) of L.-F. Tam and the author. The second set of results concerns the so-called $k$-hyperbolicity and its connection with the negativity of the $k$-scalar curvature (when $k=1$ they are the negativity of holomorphic sectional curv…
Let X be a complex manifold with strongly pseudoconvex boundary M. If u is a defining function for M, then -log u is plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of M in X, and the (real) 2-form s = i \del \delbar(-log u) is a symplectic structure on the complement of M in a neighborhood in X of M; it blows up along M. The Poisson structure obtained by inverting s extends smoothly across M and determines a contact structure on M which is the same as the one induced by the complex structure. When M is compact, the Poisson structure near M is completely determined up to isomorphism by the contact structur…
Given a degeneration of compact projective complex manifolds $X$ over the punctured disc, with meromorphic singularities, and a relatively ample line bundle $L$ on $X$, we study spaces of plurisubharmonic metrics on $L$, with particular focus on (relative) finite-energy conditions. We endow the space $\hat \cE^1(L)$ of relatively maximal, relative finite-energy metrics with a $d_1$-type distance given by the Lelong number at zero of the collection of fibrewise Darvas $d_1$-distances. We show that this metric structure is complete and geodesic. Seeing $X$ and $L$ as schemes $X_\K$, $L_\K$ over …
We consider positive-(1,1) De Rham currents in arbitrary almost complex manifolds and prove the uniqueness of the tangent cone at any point where the density does not have a jump with respect to all of its values in a neighbourhood. Without this assumption, counterexamples to the uniqueness of tangent cones can be produced already in C^n, hence our result is optimal. The key idea is an implementation, for currents in an almost complex setting, of the classical blow up of curves in algebraic or symplectic geometry. Unlike the classical approach in C^n, we cannot rely on plurisubharmonic potenti…
The aim of this article is to study the Riemann soliton and gradient almost Riemann soliton on certain class of almost Kenmotsu manifolds. Also some suitable examples of Kenmotsu and $(κ,μ)'$-almost Kenmotsu manifolds are constructed to justify our results.
In this paper, by using the Bochner technique on almost Hermitian manifolds, we obtain a complex Hessian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds generalizing the Laplacian comparison for almost Hermitian manifolds by Tossati, and reprove a diameter estimate for almost Hermitian manifolds by Gray. Moreover, we obtain a sharp eigenvalue estimate on quasi Kaehler manifolds and a sharp Hessian comparison on nearly Kaehler manifolds.
