Let X be a complex manifold with strongly pseudoconvex boundary M. If u is a defining function for M, then -log u is plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of M in X, and the (real) 2-form s = i \del \delbar(-log u) is a symplectic structure on the complement of M in a neighborhood in X of M; it blows up along M.
The Poisson structure obtained by inverting s extends smoothly across M and determines a contact structure on M which is the same as the one induced by the complex structure. When M is compact, the Poisson structure near M is completely determined up to isomorphism by the contact structure on M. In addition, when -log u is plurisubharmonic throughout X, and X is compact, bidifferential operators constructed by Englis for the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization of X are smooth up to the boundary. The proofs use a complex Lie algebroid determined by the CR structure on M, along with some ideas of Epstein, Melrose, and Mendoza concerning manifolds with contact boundary.
For a possibly singular subset of a regular Poisson manifold we construct a deformation quantization of its algebra of Whitney functions. We then extend the construction of a deformation quantization to the case where the underlying set is a subset of a not necessarily regular Poisson manifold which can be written as the quotient of a regular Poisson manifold on which a compact Lie group acts freely by Poisson maps. Finally, if the quotient Poisson manifold is regular as well, we show a "quantization commutes with reduction" type result. For the proofs, we use methods stemming from both singul…
We give a complete identification of the deformation quantization which was obtained from the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on an arbitrary compact Kaehler manifold. The deformation quantization with the opposite star-product proves to be a differential deformation quantization with separation of variables whose classifying form is explicitly calculated. Its characteristic class (which classifies star-products up to equivalence) is obtained. The proof is based on the microlocal description of the Szegoe kernel of a strictly pseudoconvex domain given by Boutet de Monvel and Sjoestrand.
We describe a deformation quantization of a modification of Poisson geometry by a closed 3-form. Under suitable conditions it gives rise to a stack of algebras. The basic object used for this aim is a kind of families of Poisson structures given by a Maurer-Cartan equation; they are easily quantized using Kontsevich's Formality theorem.
We review recent results and ongoing investigations of the symplectic and Poisson geometry of derived moduli spaces, and describe applications to deformation quantization of such spaces.
Let $G$ be a Poisson Lie group and $\g$ its Lie bialgebra. Suppose that $\g$ is a group Lie bialgebra. This means that there is an action of a discrete group $Γ$ on $G$ deforming the Poisson structure into coboundary equivalent ones. Starting from this we construct a non-trivial stack of Hopf-Poisson algebras and prove the existence of associated deformation quantizations. This non-trivial stack is a stack of functions on the formal Poisson group, dual of the starting $Γ$ Poisson-Lie group. To quantize this non-trivial stack we use quantization of a $Γ$ Lie bialgebra which is the infinitesimal…
We give simple explicit formulas for deformation quantization of Poisson-Lie groups and of similar Poisson manifolds which can be represented as moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces. The star products depend on a choice of Drinfeľd associator and are obtained by applying certain monoidal functors (fusion and reduction) to commutative algebras in Drinfeľd categories. From a geometric point of view this construction can be understood as a quantization of the quasi-Poisson structures on moduli spaces of flat connections.
We describe three perspectives on higher quantization, using the example of magnetic Poisson structures which embody recent discussions of nonassociativity in quantum mechanics with magnetic monopoles and string theory with non-geometric fluxes. We survey approaches based on deformation quantization of twisted Poisson structures, symplectic realization of almost symplectic structures, and geometric quantization using 2-Hilbert spaces of sections of suitable bundle gerbes. We compare and contrast these perspectives, describing their advantages and shortcomings in each case, and mention many ope…
Given a Lie algebra, there uniquely exists a Poisson algebra which is called a Lie-Poisson algebra over the Lie algebra. We will prove that given a Loday/Leibniz algebra there exists uniquely a noncommutative Poisson algebra over the Loday algebra. The noncommutative Poisson algebras are called the Loday-Poisson algebras. In the super/graded cases, the Loday-Poisson bracket is regarded as a noncommutative version of classical (linear) Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. It will be shown that the Loday-Poisson algebras form a special subclass of Aguiar's dual-prePoisson algebras. We also study a proble…
This paper is about the role of Planck's constant, $\hbar$, in the geometric quantization of Poisson manifolds using symplectic groupoids. In order to construct a strict deformation quantization of a given Poisson manifold, one can use all possible rescalings of the Poisson structure, which can be combined into a single "Heisenberg-Poisson" manifold. The new coordinate on this manifold is identified with $\hbar$. I present an explicit construction for a symplectic groupoid integrating a Heisenberg-Poisson manifold and discuss its geometric quantization. I show that in cases where $\hbar$ canno…
These are lecture notes for the course "Poisson geometry and deformation quantization" given by the author during the fall semester 2020 at the University of Zurich. The first chapter is an introduction to differential geometry, where we cover manifolds, tensor fields, integration on manifolds, Stokes' theorem, de Rham's theorem and Frobenius' theorem. The second chapter covers the most important notions of symplectic geometry such as Lagrangian submanifolds, Weinstein's tubular neighborhood theorem, Hamiltonian mechanics, moment maps and symplectic reduction. The third chapter gives an introd…
In this note we point out the striking relation between the conditions arising within geometric quantization and the non-perturbative Poisson sigma model. Starting from the Poisson sigma model, we analyze necessary requirements on the path integral measure which imply a certain integrality condition for the Poisson cohomology class $[α]$. The same condition was considered before by Crainic and Zhu but in a different context. In the case when $[α]$ is in the image of the sharp map we reproduce the Vaisman's condition for prequantizable Poisson manifolds. For integrable Poisson manifolds we show…
This note is an overview of the Poisson sigma model (PSM) and its applications in deformation quantization. Reduction of coisotropic and pre-Poisson submanifolds, their appearance as branes of the PSM, quantization in terms of L-infinity and A-infinity algebras, and bimodule structures are recalled. As an application, an "almost" functorial quantization of Poisson maps is presented if no anomalies occur. This leads in principle to a novel approach for the quantization of Poisson-Lie groups.
Based on work done by Bonechi, Cattaneo, Felder and Zabzine on Poisson sigma models, we formally show that Kontsevich's star product can be obtained from the twisted convolution algebra of the geometric quantization of a Lie 2-groupoid, one which integrates the Poisson structure. We show that there is an analogue of the Poisson sigma model which is valued in Lie 1-groupoids and which can often be defined non-perturbatively; it can be obtained by symplectic reduction using the quantization of the Lie 2-groupoid. We call these groupoid-valued sigma models and we argue that, when they exist, they…
We construct a Chern-Simons type of theory using the $l_\infty$ algebra encoded by a Poisson structure on arbitrary Riemann surfaces with boundaries. A deformation quantization within the Batalin-Vilkovisky framework is performed by constructing propagators with Dirichlet boundary condition on Fulton-MacPherson compactified configuration space. Our results show that the BV quantization is independent of several gauge choices in propagators, which leads to global observables that are candidates for geometric invariants of Poisson structure and topological invariants for the worldsheet structure…
We expose the basics of the Fedosov quantization procedure, placed in the general framework of symplectic ringed spaces. This framework also includes some Poisson manifolds with non regular Poisson structures, presymplectic manifolds, complex analytic symplectic manifolds, etc.
We define prequantization for Dirac manifolds to generalize known procedures for Poisson and (pre) symplectic manifolds by using characteristic distributions obtained from 2-cocycles associated to Dirac structures. Given a Dirac manifold $(M,D)$, we construct Poisson structure on the space of admissible functions on $(M,D)$ and a representation of the Poisson algebra to establish the prequantization condition of $(M,D)$ in terms of a Lie algebroid cohomology. Additional to this, we introduce a polarization for a Dirac manifold $M$ and discuss procedures for quantization in two cases where $M$ …
The argument shift method is a well-known method for generating commutative families of functions in Poisson algebras from central elements and a vector field, verifying a special condition with respect to the Poisson bracket. In this notice we give an analogous construction, which gives one a way to create commutative subalgebras of a deformed algebra from its center (which is as it is well known describable in the terms of the center of the Poisson algebra) and an $L_\infty$-differentiation of the algebra of Hochschild cochains, verifying some additional conditions with respect to the Poisso…
We prove the existence of a strict deformation quantization for the canonical Poisson structure on the dual of an integrable Lie algebroid. It follows that any Lie groupoid C*-algebra may be regarded as a result of a quantization procedure. The C*-algebra of the tangent groupoid of a given Lie groupoid G (with Lie algebra g) is the C*-algebra of a continuous field of C*-algebras over R with fibers A_0=C*(g)=C_0(g*) and A_h=C*(G) for nonzero h. The same is true for the corresponding reduced C*-algebras. Our results have applications to, e.g., transformation group C*-algebras, K-theory, and inde…
In this paper we outline the construction of semiclassical eigenfunctions of integrable models in terms of the semiclassical path integral for the Poisson sigma model with the target space being the phase space of the integrable system. The semiclassical path integral is defined as a formal power series with coefficients being Feynman diagrams. We also argue that in a similar way one can obtain irreducible semiclassical representations of Kontsevich's star product.
As a detailed application of the BV-BFV formalism for the quantization of field theories on manifolds with boundary, this note describes a quantization of the relational symplectic groupoid for a constant Poisson structure. The presence of mixed boundary conditions and the globalization of results is also addressed. In particular, the paper includes an extension to space-times with boundary of some formal geometry considerations in the BV-BFV formalism, and specifically introduces into the BV-BFV framework a "differential" version of the classical and quantum master equations. The quantization…
We discuss a framework for quantizing a Poisson manifold via the quantization of its symplectic groupoid, that combines the tools of geometric quantization with the results of Renault's theory of groupoid C*-algebras. This setting allows very singular polarizations. In particular we consider the case when the modular function is "multiplicatively integrable", i.e. when the space of leaves of the polarization inherits a groupoid structure. If suitable regularity conditions are satisfied, then one can define the quantum algebra as the convolution algebra of the subgroupoid of leaves satisfying t…
In this paper we propose a noncommutative generalization of the relationship between compact Kähler manifolds and complex projective algebraic varieties. Beginning with a prequantized Kähler structure, we use a holomorphic Poisson tensor to deform the underlying complex structure into a generalized complex structure, such that the prequantum line bundle and its tensor powers deform to a sequence of generalized complex branes. Taking homomorphisms between the resulting branes, we obtain a noncommutative deformation of the homogeneous coordinate ring. As a proof of concept, this is implemented f…
In the presence of classical phase space singularities the standard methods are insufficient to attack the problem of quantization. In certain situations the difficulties can be overcome by means of Kähler quantization on stratified Kähler spaces. Such a space is a stratified symplectic space together with a complex analytic structure which is compatible with the stratified symplectic structure; in particular each stratum is a Kähler manifold in an obvious fashion. Holomorphic quantization on a stratified Kähler space then yields a costratified Hilbert space, a quantum object having the classic…
One defines the notion of universal deformation quantization: given any manifold $M$, any Poisson structure $¶$ on $M$ and any torsionfree linear connection $\nabla$ on $M$, a universal deformation quantization associates to this data a star product on $(M,¶)$ given by a series of bidifferential operators whose corresponding tensors are given by universal polynomial expressions in the Poisson tensor $¶$, the curvature tensor $R$ and their covariant iterated derivatives. Such universal deformation quantization exist. We study their unicity at order 3 in the deformation parameter, computing the …
We study the problem of deformation quantization for (algebraic) symplectic manifolds over a base field of positive characteristic. We prove a reasonably complete classification theorem for one class of such quantizations; in the course of doing it, we also introduce a notion of a restricted Poisson algebra -- the Poisson analog of the standard notion of a restrictted Lie algebra -- and we prove a version of Darboux Theorem valid in positive characteristic setting.
Let $A$ be a central quantization of an affine Poisson variety $X$ over a field of characteristic $p>0.$ We show that the completion of $A$ with respect to a closed point $y\in X$ is isomorphic to the tensor product of the Weyl algebra with a local Poisson algebra. This result can be thought of as a positive characteristic analogue of results of Losev and Kaledin about slice algebras of quantizations in characteristic 0.
We provide a general study for triangular dynamical r-matrices using Poisson geometry. We show that a triangular dynamical r-matrix always gives rise to a regular Poisson manifold. Using the Fedosov method, we prove that non-degenerate (i.e., the corresponding Poisson manifolds are symplectic) triangular dynamical r-matrices (over $ \frakh^* $ and valued in $\wedge^{2}\frakg$) are quantizable, and the quantization is classified by the relative Lie algebra cohomology $H^{2}(\frakg, \frakh)[[\hbar ]]$. We also generalize this quantization method to splittable triangular dynamical r-matrices, whi…
There is a simple and natural quantization of differential forms on odd Poisson supermanifolds, given by the relation [f,dg]={f,g} for any two functions f and g. We notice that this non-commutative differential algebra has a geometrical realization as a convolution algebra of the symplectic groupoid integrating the Poisson manifold. This quantization is just a part of a quantization of the odd symplectic category (where objects are odd symplectic supermanifolds and morphisms are Lagrangian relation) in terms of Z_2-graded chain complexes. It is a straightforward consequence of the theory of BV…
Many interesting C*-algebras can be viewed as quantizations of Poisson manifolds. I propose that a Poisson manifold may be quantized by a twisted polarized convolution C*-algebra of a symplectic groupoid. Toward this end, I define polarizations for Lie groupoids and sketch the construction of this algebra. A large number of examples show that this idea unifies previous geometric constructions, including geometric quantization of symplectic manifolds and the C*-algebra of a Lie groupoid.
This paper contains three results about generating functions for Lie-theoretic integration of Poisson brackets and their relation to quantization. In the first, we show how to construct a generating function associated to the germ of any local symplectic groupoid and we provide an explicit (smooth, non-formal) universal formula $S_π$ for integrating any Poisson structure $π$ on a coordinate space. The second result involves the relation to semiclassical quantization. We show that the formal Taylor expansion of $S_{tπ}$ around $t=0$ yields an extract of Kontsevich's star product formula based o…
Notwithstanding known obstructions to this idea, we formulate an attempt to turn quantization into a functorial procedure. We define a category PO of Poisson manifolds, whose objects are integrable Poisson manifolds and whose arrows are isomorphism classes of regular Weinstein dual pairs; it follows that identity arrows are symplectic groupoids, and that two objects are isomorphic in PO iff they are Morita equivalent in the sense of P. Xu. It has a subcategory LPO that has duals of integrable Lie algebroids as objects and cotangent bundles as arrows. We argue that naive C*-algebraic quantizati…
There are two main types of objects in the theory of cluster algebras: the upper cluster algebras ${\boldsymbol{\mathsf U}}$ with their Gekhtman-Shapiro-Vainshtein Poisson brackets and their root of unity quantizations ${\boldsymbol{\mathsf U}}_\varepsilon$. On the Poisson side, we prove that (without any assumptions) the spectrum of every finitely generated upper cluster algebra ${\boldsymbol{\mathsf U}}$ with its GSV Poisson structure always has a Zariski open orbit of symplectic leaves and give an explicit description of it. On the quantum side, we describe the fully Azumaya loci of the qua…
