We consider a generalization of the Lotka-McKendrick problem describing the dynamics of an age-structured population with time-dependent vital rates.
The generalization consists in allowing the initial and the boundary conditions to be derivatives of the Dirac measure. We construct a unique $\D'$-solution in the framework of intrinsic multiplication of distributions. We also investigate the regularity of this solution.
The PSA system commonly used in the context of gas-solid chromatography is reformulated as a single kinetic equation using an additional kinetic variable. A kinetic numerical scheme is built from this new formulation and its behavior is tested on solving the Riemann problem in different configurations leading to single or composite waves.
We consider a hyperbolic-parabolic system arising from a chemotaxis model in angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. It is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves). We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost $L^2$-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.
We consider a model of liquid crystals, based on a nonlinear hyperbolic system of differential equations, that represents an inviscid version of the model proposed by Qian and Sheng. A new concept of dissipative solution is proposed, for which a global-in-time existence theorem is shown. The dissipative solutions enjoy the following properties: (i) they exist globally in time for any finite energy initial data; (ii) dissipative solutions enjoying certain smoothness are classical solutions; (iii) a dissipative solution coincides with a strong solution originating from the same initial data as l…
We study the Cauchy problem of a $3\times 3$ system of conservation laws modeling two--phase flow of polymer flooding in rough porous media with possibly discontinuous permeability function. The system loses strict hyperbolicity in some regions of the domain where the eigenvalues of different families coincide, and BV estimates are not available in general. For a suitable $2\times 2$ system, a singular change of variable introduced by Temple could be effective to control the total variation. An extension of this technique can be applied to a $3\times 3$ system only under strict hypotheses on t…
We consider a one-dimensional system arising from a chemotaxis model in tumour angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. This hyperbolic-parabolic system is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves), and in literature, their nonlinear stabilities have been considered in the class of certain mean-zero small perturbations. We show the global existence of the solution without assuming the mean-zero condition for any initial data as arbitrarily large perturbations around traveling waves in the Sobolev space $H^1$ while the shock strength…
We address the questions (P1), (P2) asked in Kirchheim-Müller-Šverák (2003) concerning the structure of the Rank-$1$ convex hull of a submanifold $\mathcal{K}_1\subset M^{3\times 2}$ that is related to weak solutions of the two by two system of Lagrangian equations of elasticity studied by DiPerna (1985) with one entropy augmented. This system serves as a model problem for higher order systems for which there are only finitely many entropies. The Rank-$1$ convex hull is of interest in the study of solutions via convex integration: the Rank-$1$ convex hull needs to be sufficiently non-trivial f…
In this article a theoretical framework for problems involving fractional equations of hyperbolic type arising in the theory of viscoelasticity is presented. Based on the Galerkin method, a variational problem of the fractionary viscoelasticity is studied. An appropriate functional setting is introduced in order to establish the existence, uniqueness and a priori estimates for weak solutions. This framework is developed in close concordance with important physical quantities of the theory of viscoelasticity
We consider forward-forward Mean Field Game (MFG) models that arise in numerical approximations of stationary MFGs. First, we establish a link between these models and a class of hyperbolic conservation laws as well as certain nonlinear wave equations. Second, we investigate existence and long-time behavior of solutions for such models.
Motivated by a new kind of initial boundary value problem (IBVP) with a free boundary arising in wave-structure interaction, we propose here a general approach to one-dimensional IBVP as well as transmission problems. For general strictly hyperbolic 2x2 quasilinear hyperbolic systems, we derive new sharp linear estimates with refined dependence on the source term and control on the traces of the solution at the boundary. These new estimates are used to obtain sharp results for quasilinear IBVP and transmission problems, and for fixed, moving, and free boundaries. In the latter case, two kinds …
Given a Hilbert space, we investigate the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the wave equation for operators with discrete non-negative spectrum acting on it. We consider the cases when the time-dependent propagation speed is regular, Hölder, and distributional. We also consider cases when it it is strictly positive (strictly hyperbolic case) and when it is non-negative (weakly hyperbolic case). When the propagation speed is a distribution, we introduce the notion of "very weak solutions" to the Cauchy problem. We show that the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with the distributional…
We consider asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds whose metrics have Sobolev-class regularity, and introduce several technical tools for studying PDEs on such manifolds. Our results employ two novel families of function spaces suitable for metrics potentially having a large amount of interior differentiability, but whose Sobolev regularity implies only a Hölder continuous conformal structure at infinity. We establish Fredholm theorems for elliptic operators arising from metrics in these families. To demonstrate the utility of our methods, we solve the Yamabe problem in this category. As a specia…
