It is well-known that the unit cotangent bundle of any Riemannian manifold has a canonical contact structure. A surface in a Riemannian 3-manifold is called a (wave) front if it is the projection of a Legendrian immersion into the unit cotangent bundle. We shall give easily-computable criteria for a singular point on a front to be a cuspidal edge or a swallowtail. Using this, we shall prove that generically flat fronts in the hyperbolic 3-space admit only cuspidal edges and swallowtails. Moreover, we will show that every complete flat front (which is not rotationally symmetric) has associated parallel surfaces whose singularities consist of only cuspidal edges and swallowtails.
This paper introduces pedal curves of spacelike frontals in the hyperbolic 2-space. We mainly investigate the singularities of these hyperbolic pedal curves of spacelike frontals for non-singular and singular dual curve germs. We then show that for non-singular dual curve germs, the singularities of a pedal curve are dependent on the singularities of the first hyperbolic Legendrian curvature germ and the location of the pedal point, while for singular dual curve germs, they depend upon the singularities of both hyperbolic Legendrian curvature germs and also the location of the pedal point. We …
We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Further, we consider extended height functions on fronts with non-degenerate singular points.
We construct examples of flat surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^3$ which are graphs over a two-punctured horosphere and classify complete embedded flat surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^3$ with only one end and at most two isolated singularities.
We give a short introduction to discrete flat fronts in hyperbolic space and prove that any discrete flat front in the mixed area sense admits a Weierstrass representation.
We propose a Lie geometric point of view on flat fronts in hyperbolic space as special omega-surfaces and discuss the Lie geometric deformation of flat fronts.
We shall investigate flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space with admissible singularities, called `flat fronts'. An Osserman-type inequality for complete flat fronts is shown. When equality holds in this inequality, we show that all the ends are embedded. Moreover, we shall give new examples for which equality holds.
CMC-1 trinoids (i.e. constant mean curvature one immersed surface with three regular embedded ends) in hyperbolic 3-space H^3 are irreducible generically, and the irreducible ones have been classified. However, the reducible case has not yet been fully treated, so in this paper we give an explicit description of CMC-1 trinoids in H^3 that includes the reducible case.
We compute the differential geometric invariants of cuspidal edges on flat surfaces in hyperbolic $3$-space and in de Sitter space. Several dualities of invariants are pointed out.
This survey introduces to the hyperbolic unfolding correspondence that links the geometric analysis of minimal hypersurfaces with that of Gromov hyperbolic spaces. Problems caused from hypersurface singularities oftentimes become solvable on associated Gromov hyperbolic spaces. Applied to scalar curvature geometry this yields smoothing schemes that eliminate such singularities.
We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on hyperbolic 3-manifolds with Dehn surgery type singularities and its dependence on the generalized Dehn surgery coefficients.
After Galvez, Martinez and Milan discovered a (Weierstrass-type) holomorphic representation formula for flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, the first, third and fourth authors here gave a framework for complete flat fronts with singularities in H^3. In the present work we broaden the notion of completeness to weak completeness, and of front to p-front. As a front is a p-front and completeness implies weak completeness, the new framework and results here apply to a more general class of flat surfaces. This more general class contains the caustics of flat fronts -- shown also to be flat by Roit…
We investigate surfaces with constant harmonic-mean curvature one (HMC-1 surfaces) in hyperbolic three-space. We allow them to have certain kinds of singularities, and discuss some global properties. As well as flat surfaces and surfaces with constant mean curvature one (CMC-1 surfaces), HMC-1 surfaces belong to a certain class of Weingarten surfaces. From the viewpoint of parallel surfaces, CMC-1 surfaces and HMC-1 surfaces are representative among this class.
We give criteria for which a principal curvature becomes a bounded $C^\infty$-function at non-degenerate singular points of wave fronts by using geometric invariants. As applications, we study singularities of parallel surfaces and extended distance squared functions of wave fronts. Moreover, we relate these singularities to some geometric invariants of fronts.
We study focal surfaces of (wave) fronts associated to unbounded principal curvatures near non-degenerate singular points of initial fronts. We give characterizations of singularities of those focal surfaces in terms of types of singularities and geometrical properties of initial fronts. Moreover, we investigate behavior of the Gaussian curvature of the focal surface.
It is classically known that complete flat surfaces in Euclidean 3-space are cylinders over space curves. This implies that the study of global behaviour of flat surfaces requires the study of singular points as well. If a flat surface $f$ admits singularities but its Gauss map $ν$ can be smoothly extended across the singular set, $f$ is called a frontal. In addition, if the pair $(f,ν)$ gives an immersion, $f$ is called a front. A front $f$ is called flat if the Gauss map degenerates everywhere. The parallel surfaces and the focal surface of a flat front $f$ are also flat fronts. In this pape…
We prove the existence of a minimal diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic cone surfaces $(Σ,g_1)$ and $(Σ,g_2)$ when the cone angles of $g_1$ and $g_2$ are different and smaller than $π$. When the cone angles of $g_1$ are strictly smaller than the ones of $g_2$, this minimal diffeomorphism is unique.
We investigate necessary and sufficient conditions for the extendibility and boundedness of Gaussian curvature, Mean curvature and principal curvatures near all types of singularities on fronts. We also study the convergence to infinite limits of these geometrical invariants and show how this is tightly related to a particular property of uniform approximation of fronts by parallel surfaces.
A geometric construction is provided that associates to a given flat front in $\mathbb{H}^3$ a pair of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are related by a Ribaucour transformation. This construction is generalized associating to a given frontal in $\mathbb{H}^3$ , a pair of frontals in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that are envelopes of a smooth congruence of spheres. The theory of Ribaucour transformations for minimal surfaces is reformulated in terms of a complex Riccati ordinary differential equation for a holomorphic function. This enables one to simplify and extend the classical theory, that in pr…
We consider an inverse problem associated with some 2-dimensional non-compact surfaces with conical singularities, cusps and regular ends. Our motivating example is a Riemann surface $\mathcal M = Γ\backslash{\bf H}^2$ associated with a Fuchsian group of the 1st kind $Γ$ containing parabolic elements. $\mathcal M$ is then non-compact, and has a finite number of cusps and elliptic singular points, which is regarded as a hyperbolic orbifold. We introduce a class of Riemannian surfaces with conical singularities on its finite part, having cusps and regular ends at infinity, whose metric is asympt…
We give an effective estimate for the totally ramified value number of the hyperbolic Gauss maps of complete flat fronts in the hyperbolic three-space. As a corollary, we give the upper bound of the number of exceptional values of them for some topological cases. Moreover, we obtain some new examples for this class.
It is known that the class of developable surfaces which have zero Gaussian curvature in three dimensional Euclidean space is preserved by the parallel transformations. A tangent developable surface is defined as a ruled developable surface by tangent lines to a space curve and it has singularities at least along the space curve, called the directrix or the the edge of regression. Also the class of tangent developable surfaces are invariant under the parallel deformations. In this paper the notions of tangent developable surfaces and their parallels are naturally generalized for frontal curves…
We establish a correspondence on a Riemann surface between hyperbolic metrics with isolated singularities and bounded projective functions whose Schwarzian derivatives have at most double poles and whose monodromies lie in ${\rm PSU}(1,\,1)$. As an application, we construct explicitly a new class of hyperbolic metrics with countably many singularities on the unit disc.
A Fuchsian polyhedron in hyperbolic space is a polyhedral surface invariant under the action of a Fuchsian group of isometries (i.e. a group of isometries leaving globally invariant a totally geodesic surface, on which it acts cocompactly). The induced metric on a convex Fuchsian polyhedron is isometric to a hyperbolic metric with conical singularities of positive singular curvature on a compact surface of genus greater than one. We prove that these metrics are actually realised by exactly one convex Fuchsian polyhedron (up to global isometries). This extends a famous theorem of A.D. Alexandro…
J. Nitsche proved that an isolated singularity of a conformal hyperbolic metric is either a conical singularity or a cusp one. We prove by developing map that there exists a complex coordinate $z$ centered at the singularity where the metric has the expression of either $\displaystyle{\frac{4α^2\vert z \vert^{2α-2}}{(1-\vert z \vert ^{2α})^2}\vert \mathrm{d} z \vert^2}$ with $α>0$ or $\displaystyle{\vert z \vert ^{-2}\big(\ln|z|\big)^{-2}|dz|^{2}}$.
Manifolds with fibered hyperbolic cusp metrics include hyperbolic manifolds with cusps and locally symmetric spaces of Q-rank one. We extend Vaillant's treatment of Dirac-type operators associated to these metrics by weaking the hypotheses on the boundary families through the use of Fredholm perturbations as in the family index theorem of Melrose and Piazza and by treating the index of families of such operators. We also extend the index theorem of Moroianu and Leichtnam-Mazzeo-Piazza to families of perturbed Dirac-type operators associated to fibered cusp metrics (sometimes known as fibered b…
It is shown that the initial singularities in spatially compact spacetimes with spherical, plane or hyperbolic symmetry admitting a compact constant mean curvature hypersurface are crushing singularities when the matter content of spacetime is described by the Vlasov equation (collisionless matter) or the wave equation (massless scalar field). In the spherically symmetric case it is further shown that if the spacetime admits a maximal slice then there are crushing singularities both in the past and in the future. The essential properties of the matter models chosen are that their energy-moment…
In this paper, we discuss the recognition problem for A_k-type singularities on wave fronts. We give computable and simple criteria of these singularities, which will play a fundamental role in generalizing the authors' previous work "the geometry of fronts" for surfaces. The crucial point to prove our criteria for A_k-singularities is to introduce a suitable parametrization of the singularities called the "k-th KRSUY-coordinates". Using them, we can directly construct a versal unfolding for a given singularity. As an application, we prove that a given nondegenerate singular point p on a real …
By Hartman--Nirenberg's theorem, any complete flat hypersurface in Euclidean space must be a cylinder over a plane curve. However, if we admit some singularities, there are many non-trivial examples. Flat fronts are flat hypersurfaces with admissible singularities. Murata--Umehara gave a representation formula for complete flat fronts with non-empty singular set in Euclidean $3$-space, and proved the four vertex type theorem. In this paper, we prove that, unlike the case of $n=2$, there do not exist any complete flat fronts with non-empty singular set in Euclidean $(n+1)$-space $(n\geq 3)$.
We define discrete flat surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space from the perspective of discrete integrable systems and prove properties that justify the definition. We show how these surfaces correspond to previously defined discrete constant mean curvature 1 surfaces in hyperbolic 3-space, and we also describe discrete focal surfaces (discrete caustics) that can be used to define singularities on discrete flat surfaces. We also examine discrete linear Weingarten surfaces of Bryant type in hyperbolic 3-space, and consider an example of a discrete flat surface related to the Airy equation that exhibits…
For a Riemann surface with cusps we define a theta function using the eigenvalues of the Laplacian and the singularities of the scattering determinant. We provide its meromorphic continuation and discuss its singularities.
We study a generalization of constant Gauss curvature -1 surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, based on Lorentzian harmonic maps, that we call pseudospherical frontals. We analyze the singularities of these surfaces, dividing them into those of characteristic and non-characteristic type. We give methods for constructing all non-degenerate singularities of both types, as well as many degenerate singularities. We also give a method for solving the singular geometric Cauchy problem: construct a pseudospherical frontal containing a given regular space curve as a non-degenerate singular curve. The solutio…
We give the complete solution to the local diffeomorphism classification problem of generic singularities which appear in tangent surfaces, in as wider situations as possible. We interpret tangent geodesics as tangent lines whenever a (semi-)Riemannian metric, or, more generally, an affine connection is given in an ambient space of arbitrary dimension. Then, given an immersed curve, or, more generally a directed curve or a frontal curve which has well-defined tangent directions along the curve, we define the tangent surface as the ruled surface by tangent geodesics to the curve. We apply the c…
We show that the real-valued function $S_α$ on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ of pointed rational curves, defined as the critical value of the Liouville action functional on a hyperbolic 2-sphere with $n\geq 3$ conical singularities of arbitrary orders $α=\{α_1,...,α_n\}$, generates accessory parameters of the associated Fuchsian differential equation as their common antiderivative. We introduce a family of Kaehler metrics on $\mathcal{M}_{0,n}$ parameterized by the set of orders $α$, explictly relate accessory parameters to these metrics, and prove that the functions $S_α$ are their Kae…
We characterize singularities of focal surfaces of wave fronts in terms of differential geometric properties of the initial wave fronts. Moreover, we study relationships between geometric properties of focal surfaces and geometric invariants of the initial wave fronts.
By a result of W.~P. Thurston, the moduli space of flat metrics on the sphere with $n$ cone singularities of prescribed positive curvatures is a complex hyperbolic orbifold of dimension $n-3$. The Hermitian form comes from the area of the metric. Using geometry of Euclidean polyhedra, we observe that this space has a natural decomposition into real hyperbolic convex polyhedra of dimensions $n-3$ and $\leq \frac{1}{2}(n-1)$. By a result of W.~Veech, the moduli space of flat metrics on a compact surface with cone singularities of prescribed negative curvatures has a foliation whose leaves have a…
In a previous work, the authors gave a definition of `front bundles'. Using this, we give a realization theorem for wave fronts in space forms, like as in the fundamental theorem of surface theory. As an application, we investigate the behavior of principal singular curvatures along A_2-singularities of hypersurfaces with non-negative sectional curvature in Euclidean space.
We obtain necessary conditions for the existence of special Kähler structures with isolated singularities on compact Riemann surfaces. We prove that these conditions are also sufficient in the case of the Riemann sphere and, moreover, we determine the whole moduli space of special Kähler structures with fixed singularities. The tool we develop for this aim is a correspondence between special Kähler structures and pairs consisting of a cubic differential and a hyperbolic metric.
Let $\M$ be a classical Riemannian globally symmetric space of rank one and non-compact type. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps into $\M$ with prescribed singularities along a closed submanifold of the domain. This generalizes our previous work where such maps into the hyperbolic plane were constructed. This problem, in the case where $\M$ is the complex-hyperbolic plane, has applications to equilibrium configurations of co-axially rotating charged black holes in General Relativity.
We prove that the isoperimetric inequalities in the euclidean and hyperbolic plane hold for all euclidean, respectively hyperbolic, cone-metrics on a disk with singularities of negative curvature. This is a discrete analog of the theorems of Weil and Bol that deal with Riemannian metrics of curvature bounded from above by 0, respectively by -1. A stronger discrete version was proved by A.D.Alexandrov, with a subsequent extension by approximation to metrics of bounded integral curvature. Our proof uses "discrete conformal deformations" of the metric that eliminate the singularities and increase…
In this paper, we consider conformal metrics on a unit 4-disc with an asymptotically hyperbolic end and possible isolated conic singularities. We define a mass term of the AH end. If the $σ_{2}$ curvature has lower bound $σ_{2}\geq\frac{3}{2}$, we prove a Penrose type inequality relating the mass and contributions from singularities. We also classify sharp cases, which is the standard hyperbolic 4-space $\mathbb{H}^{4}$ when no singularity occurs. It is worth noting that our curvature condition implies non-positive energy density.
We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities of angles less than $2π$ along a time-like graph $Γ$. To each such space we associate a graph and a finite family of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities. We show that this data is sufficient to recover the space locally (i.e., in the neighborhood of a fixed metric). This is a partial extension of a result of Mess for non-singular globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds.
We prove two related results. The first is an ``Earthquake Theorem'' for closed hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities where the total angle is less than $π$: any two such metrics in are connected by a unique left earthquake. The second result is that the space of ``globally hyperbolic'' AdS manifolds with ``particles'' -- cone singularities (of given angle) along time-like lines -- is parametrized by the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space with some marked points (corresponding to the cone singularities). The two statements are proved together.
An explicit formula for the generalized hyperbolic metric on the thrice--punctured sphere $¶\backslash \{z_1, z_2, z_3\}$ with singularities of order $α_j \le 1$ at $z_j$ is obtained in all possible cases $α_1+α_2+α_3 >2$. The existence and uniqueness of such a metric was proved long time ago by Picard \cite{Pic1905} and Heins \cite{Hei62}, while explicit formulas for the cases $α_1=α_2=1$ were given earlier by Agard \cite{AG} and recently by Anderson, Sugawa, Vamanamurthy and Vuorinen \cite{A}. We also establish precise and explicit lower bounds for the generalized hyperbolic metric. This ext…
We prove that any hyperbolic end with particles (cone singularities along infinite curves of angles less than $π$) admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. Using a form of duality between hyperbolic ends with particles and convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) de Sitter spacetime with particles, it follows that any convex GHM de Sitter spacetime with particles also admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. We prove that the grafting map from the product of Teichmüller space with the space of measured laminations to the space of complex projective…
We consider ``hyperideal'' circle patterns, i.e. patterns of disks appearing in the definition of the Delaunay decomposition associated to a set of disjoint disks, possibly with cone singularities at the center of those disks. Hyperideal circle patterns are associated to hyperideal hyperbolic polyhedra. We describe the possible intersection angles and singular curvatures of those circle patterns, on Euclidean or hyperbolic surfaces with conical singularities. This is related to results on the dihedral angles of ideal or hyperideal hyperbolic polyhedra.
We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities along a graph $Γ$. We impose physically relevant conditions on the cone singularities, e.g. positivity of mass (angle less than $2π$ on time-like singular segments). We construct examples of such manifolds, describe the cone singularities that can arise and the way they can interact (the local geometry near the vertices of $Γ$). The local geometry near an "interaction point" (a vertex of the singular locus) has a simple geometric description in terms of polyhedra in the extension of …
We prove generalizations of the isoperimetric inequality for both spherical and hyperbolic wave fronts (i.e. piecewise smooth curves which may have cusps). We then discuss "bicycle curves" using the generalized isoperimetric inequalities. The euclidean model of a bicycle is a unit segment AB that can move so that it remains tangent to the trajectory of point A (the rear wheel is fixed on the bicycle frame). We extend this definition to a general Riemannian manifold, and concern ourselves in particular with bicycle curves in the hyperbolic plane H^2 and on the sphere S^2. We prove results along…
