The third homology group of GL_n(R) is studied, where R is a `ring with many units' with center Z(R). The main theorem states that if K_1(Z(R))_Q \simeq K_1(R)_Q, (e.g. R a commutative ring or a central simple algebra), then H_3(GL_2(R), Q) --> H_3(GL_3(R), Q) is injective. If R is commutative, Q can be replaced by a field k such that 1/2 is in k. For an infinite field R (resp. an infinite field R such that R*=R*^2), we get a better result that H_3(GL_2(R), Z[1/2] --> H_3(GL_3(R), Z[1/2]) (resp. H_3(GL_2(R), Z) --> H_3(GL_3(R), Z)) is injective. As an application we study the third homology group of SL_2(R) and the indecomposable part of K_3(R).
We prove that for any infinite field homology stability for the third integral homology of the special linear groups $SL(n,F)$ begins at $n=3$. When $n=2$ the cokernel of the map from the third homology of $SL(2,F)$ to the third homology of $SL(3,F)$ is naturally isomorphic to the square of Milnor $K_3$. We discuss applications to the indecomposable $K_3$ of the field and to Milnor-Witt K-theory.
In this paper the third homology group of the linear group GL_2(R) with integral coefficients is investigated, where R is a commutative ring with many units.
For a field F with discrete valuation and residue field $k$ we relate the third homology of SL_2(F) with half-integral coefficients to the third homology of SL_2(k) and a certain refined scissors congruence group of k. As an application, we obtain explicit calculations of the third homology of SL_2 of certain higher-dimensional local fields in terms of scissors congruence groups, in the sense of Dupont and Sah, of the residue fields of the associated valuations.
We describe the third homology of SL_2 of local rings over Z[1/2] in terms of a refined Bloch group. We use this to derive a localization sequence for the third homology of SL_2 of certain discrete valuation rings, and to make explicit computations for p-adic integers and other local rings.
We improve the homology stability range for the 3rd integral homology of symplectic groups over commutative local rings with infinite residue field. As an application, we show that for local commutative rings containing an infinite field of characteristic not 2 the symbol map from Milnor-Witt K-theory to higher Grothendieck-Witt groups is an isomorphism in degrees 2 and 3.
For a commutative ring R with many units, we describe the kernel of H_3(inc): H_3(GL_2(R), Z) --> H_3(GL_3(R), Z). Moreover we show that the elements of this kernel are of order at most two. As an application we study the indecomposable part of K_3(R).
We calculate the third homology of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ with half-integral coefficients. Corresponding to each prime $p$ there is an operator on this group with square the identity. The kernel of the (split surjective) homomorphism to the indecomposable $K_3$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ is a the direct sum over all primes of the $(-1)$-eigenspaces of these operators. The $(-1)$-eigenspace of the operator corresponding to the prime $p$ is cyclic of order the odd part of $p+1$.
For a real closed field $\mathbf{R}$, we use the theory of the refined Bloch group to give a new short proof of the isomorphisms $H_{3}(SL_{2}(\mathbf{R}),\mathbb{Z})\cong K_{3}^{\mathrm{ind}}(\mathbf{R})$ and $H_{3}(SL_{n}(\mathbf{R}),\mathbb{Z})\cong H_{3}(SL_{2}(\mathbf{R}),\mathbb{Z})\oplus K_{3}^{M}(\mathbf{R})^{0}$ for $n\geq3$.
The goal of the paper is to achieve - in the special case of the linear group SL_2 - some understanding of the relation between group homology and its A^1-invariant replacement. We discuss some of the general properties of A^1-invariant group homology, such as stabilization sequences and Grothendieck-Witt module structures. Together with very precise knowledge about refined Bloch groups, these methods allow to deduce that in general there is a rather large difference between group homology and its A^1-invariant version. In other words, weak homotopy invariance fails for SL_2 over many families…
It is known that, for an infinite field F, the indecomposable part of K_3(F) and the third homology of SL_2(F) are closely related. In fact, there is a canonical map α: H_3(SL_2(F),Z)_F* --> K_3(F)^ind. Suslin has raised the question that, is αan isomorphism? Recently Hutchinson and Tao have shown that this map is surjective. They also gave some arguments about its injectivity. In this article, we improve their arguments and show that αis bijective if and only if the natural maps H_3(GL_2(F), Z)--> H_3(GL_3(F), Z) and H_3(SL_2(F), Z)_F* --> H_3(GL_2(F), Z) are injective.
For a central perfect extension of groups $A \rightarrowtail G\twoheadrightarrow Q$, first we study the natural image of $H_3(A,\mathbb{Z})$ in $H_3(G, \mathbb{Z})$. As a particular case, we show that if the extension is universal this image is 2-torsion. Moreover when the plus-construction of the classifying space of $Q$ is an $H$-space, we also study the kernel of the surjective homomorphism $H_3(G,\mathbb{Z}) \to H_3(Q, \mathbb{Z})$.
We use the properties of the refined Bloch group of a field to prove that H_3 of SL_2 of a global field is never finitely generated, and to calculate - up to some 2-torsion - H_3 of SL_2 of local fields with finite residue field of odd characteristic. We also give lower bounds for the 3-torsion in the H_3 of SL_2 of rings of S-integers.
Let $A \rightarrowtail G\twoheadrightarrow Q$ be a stem-extension and let $ρ: A\times G\to G$ be the multiplication map. We show that there is a natural map $φ: H_1(Σ_2^ε, {\rm Tor}_1^{\mathbb{Z}}({}_{2^\infty}A,{}_{2^\infty}A))\to H_3(G,\mathbb{Z})/ρ_\ast(A \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} H_2(G,\mathbb{Z}))$ such that, the image of $φ$ coincides with the image of the natural map $H_3(A,\mathbb{Z})\to H_3(G,\mathbb{Z})/ρ_\ast(A \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}} H_2(G,\mathbb{Z}))$. An important tool used here is Whitehead's quadratic functor $Γ$. As part of our proof of the main result, we give a precise homological …
In the article The third homology of $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q})$, Hutchinson determined the structure of $H_{3}\left(\mathrm{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}),\mathbb{Z}\left[\frac{1}{2}\right]\right)$ by expressing it in terms of $K_{3}^{\mathrm{ind}}(\mathbb{Q})\cong \mathbb{Z}/24$ and the scissor congruence group of the residue field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ with $p$ a prime number. In this paper, we develop further the properties of the refined scissors congruence group in order to extend this result to the case of imaginary quadratic number fields whose ring of integers is a Euclidean domain with respect to the norm.
We prove analogues of the fundamental theorem of algebraic K-theory for the second and third homology of SL_2 over an infinite field k. The statements involve Milnor-Witt K-theory and scissors congruence groups. We use these results to calculate the low-dimensional homology of SL_2 of Laurent polynomials over certain fields.
This paper is about application of various homological methods to classical problems in the theory of group rings. It is shown that the third homology of groups plays a key role in Narain Gupta's three normal subgroup problem. For a free group $F$ and its normal subgroups $R,\,S,\,T,$ and the corresponding ideals in the integral group ring $\mathbb Z[F]$, ${\bf r}=(R-1)\mathbb Z[F],\ {\bf s}=(S-1)\mathbb Z[F],\ {\bf t}=(T-1)\mathbb Z[F],$ a complete description of the normal subgroup $F\cap (1+{\bf rst})$ is given, provided $R\subseteq T$ and the third and the fourth homology groups of $R/R\ca…
We prove that continuous Hochschild and cyclic homology satisfy excision for extensions of nuclear H-unital Frechet algebras and use this to compute them for the algebra of Whitney functions on an arbitrary closed subset of a smooth manifold. Using a similar excision result for periodic cyclic homology, we also compute the periodic cyclic homology of algebras of smooth functions and Whitney functions on closed subsets of smooth manifolds.
This note explains how to prove that for any simply-connected reductive group G and any infinite field k, the inclusion of k in k[t] induces an isomorphism on homology. This generalizes results of Soule and Knudson.
In this paper, we investigate homotopy invariance for homology of SL_4. For any commutative ring, the group E_4(R[t]) acts on a simplicial complex whose contractibility implies homotopy invariance. We show that for a local factorial ring R, this complex satisfies the CAT(0)-property for the induced length metric from the Bruhat-Tits building.
We prove homology stability for elementary and special linear groups over rings with many units improving known stability ranges. Our result implies stability for unstable Quillen K-groups and proves a conjecture of Bass. For commutative local rings with infinite residue fields, we show that the obstruction to further stability is given by Milnor-Witt K-theory. As an application we construct Euler classes of projective modules with values in the cohomology of the Milnor Witt K-theory sheaf. For d-dimensional commutative noetherian rings with infinite residue fields we show that the vanishing o…
This article presents results being consistent with conjectures of J.-L. Loday about the existence and properties of a Leibniz homology for groups. Introducing L-sets we prove that (pointed) rack homology has properties this conjectural Leibniz homology should satisfy, namely the existence of a coZinbiel coalgebra structure on rack homology and the existence of a non trivial natural cocommutative coalgebra morphism from the rack homology of a group to its Eilenberg-MacLane homology. The end of the paper treats the particular cases of the linear group and of abelian groups. We prove the existen…
We answer positively a question of Church, Miller, Nagpal and Reinhold on existence of a linear bound on the presentation degree of the homology of a complex of FI-modules. This implies a linear stable range for the homology of congruence subgroups of general linear groups.
For every $n\geq 1$, we calculate the Hochschild homology of the quantum monoids $M_q(n)$, and the quantum groups $GL_q(n)$ and $SL_q(n)$ with coefficients in a 1-dimensional module coming from a modular pair in involution.
We prove that if R is a Hensel local ring with infinite residue field k, the natural map H_i(GL(n,R),Z/p) ---> H_i(GL(n,k),Z/p) is an isomorphism for i <=3, p distinct from char(k). This implies rigidity for H_i(GL_n), i <=3, which in turn implies the Friedlander-Milnor conjecture in positive characteristic in degrees <=3.
We compute the equivariant $KO$-homology of the classifying space for proper actions of $\textrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\textrm{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$. We also compute the Bredon homology and equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying spaces for proper actions of $\textrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}])$ and $\textrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[\frac{1}{p}])$ for each prime $p$. Finally, we prove the Unstable Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture for a large class of groups whose maximal finite subgroups are odd order and have periodic cohomology.
In 1985 Bayer and Billera defined a flag vector $f(X)$ for every convex polytope $X$, and proved some fundamental properties. The flag vectors $f(X)$ span a graded ring $\mathcal{R}=\bigoplus_{d\geq0}\mathcal{R}_d$. Here $\mathcal{R}_d$ is the span of the $f(X)$ with $\dim X=d$. It has dimension the Fibonacci number $F_{d+1}$. This paper introduces and explores the conjecture, that $\mathcal{R}$ has a counting basis $\{e_i\}$. If true then the equation $f(X) = \sum g_i(X)e_i$ conjecturally provides a formula for the Betti numbers $g_i(X)$ of a new homology theory. As the $g_i(X)$ are linear fu…
A quandle is an algebraic structure which attempts to generalize group conjugation. These structures have been studied extensively due to their connections with knot theory, algebraic combinatorics, and other fields. In this work, we approach the study of quandles from the perspective of the representation theory of categories. Namely, we look at collections of conjugacy classes of the symmetric groups and the finite general linear groups, and prove that they carry the structure of FI-quandles (resp. VIC$(q)$-quandles). As applications, we prove statements about the homology of these quandles,…
Let F be a field of characteristic zero and let f(t,n) be the stabilization homomorphism from the n-th integral homology of SL(t,F) to the n-th homology of SL(t+1,F). We prove the following results: For all n, f(t,n) is an isomorphism if t is at least n+1, and is surjective for t=n, confirming a conjecture of C-H. Sah. Furthermore if n is odd, then f(n,n) is an isomorphism and when n is even the kernel of f(n,n) is the (n+1)st power of the fundamental ideal of the Witt Ring of the field.. If n is even, then the cokernel of f(n-1,n) is naturally isomorphic to the n-th Milnor-Witt K-group of F, …
The notions of Betti numbers and of Bass numbers of a finite module N over a local ring R are extended to modules that are only assumed to be finite over S, for some local homomorphism f: R --> S. Various techniques are developed to study the new invariants and to establish their basic properties. In several cases they are computed in closed form. Applications go in several directions. One is to identify new classes of finite R-modules whose classical Betti numbers or Bass numbers have extremal growth. Another is to transfer ring theoretical properties between R and S in situations where S may…
Let G be an algebraic group and let X be a smooth integral scheme over a field k. In this paper we construct homology-type groups $H_i(X,G)$ by considering cycles in the simplicial scheme $BG\times X (an idea suggested by Andrei Suslin). We discuss the basic properties of these groups and construct a spectral sequence, beginning with the groups $H_i(Δ^j,G)$, which converges to the etale cohomology of the simplicial group BG. These groups are therefore connected with the study of Friedlander's generalized isomorphism conjecture. <p> We also compute some examples, focusing in particular on the c…
Let $G$ be a group acting on a small category $\mathcal C$ over a field $k$, that is $\mathcal C$ is a $G$-$k$-category. We first obtain that $\mathcal C$ is resolvable by a category which is $G$-$k$-equivalent to it, on which $G$ acts freely on objects. This resolvent category enables to show that if the coinvariants and the invariants functors are exact, then the coinvariants and invariants of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)homology of $\mathcal C$ are isomorphic to the trivial component of the Hochschild-Mitchell (co)ho\-mo\-logy of the skew category $\mathcal C[G]$. Otherwise the correspondin…
We consider the special linear group G=SL2 over a p-adic field, and its diagonal subgroup M=GL1. Parabolic induction of representations from M to G induces a map in equivariant homology, from the Bruhat-Tits building of M to that of G. We compute this map at the level of chain complexes, and show that it is given by parahoric induction (as defined by J.-F. Dat).
We compute the rational stable homology of the automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. These groups interpolate between the general linear groups over the ring of integers and the automorphism groups of free groups, and we employ functor homology to reduce to the abelian case. As an application, we also compute the rational stable homology of the outer automorphism groups and of the mapping class groups of the associated aspherical nil-manifolds in the TOP, PL, and DIFF categories.
