Consider the ensemble of Real Symmetric Toeplitz Matrices, each entry iidrv from a fixed probability distribution p of mean 0, variance 1, and finite higher moments. The limiting spectral measure (the density of normalized eigenvalues) converges weakly to a new universal distribution with unbounded support, independent of p. This distribution's moments are almost those of the Gaussian's; the deficit may be interpreted in terms of Diophantine obstructions. With a little more work, we obtain almost sure convergence. An investigation of spacings between adjacent normalized eigenvalues looks Poissonian, and not GOE.
We show that the limiting eigenvalue distribution of random symmetric Toeplitz matrices is absolutely continuous with density bounded by 8, partially answering a question of Bryc, Dembo and Jiang (2006). The main tool used in the proof is a spectral averaging technique from the theory of random Schrödinger operators. The similar question for Hankel matrices remains open.
Block Toeplitz and Hankel matrices arise in many aspects of applications. In this paper, we will research the distributions of eigenvalues for some models and get the semicircle law. Firstly we will give trace formulae of block Toeplitz and Hankel matrix. Then we will prove that the almost sure limit $γ_{_T}^{(m)}$ $(γ_{_H}^{(m)})$ of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toeplitz (Hankel) matrices exist and give the moments of the limit distributions where $m$ is the order of the blocks. Then we will prove the existence of almost sure limit of eigenvalue distributions of random block Toepl…
We show that the top eigenvalue of an $n\times n$ random symmetric Toeplitz matrix, scaled by $\sqrt{2n\log n}$, converges to the square of the $2\to4$ operator norm of the sine kernel.
This paper can be thought of as a remark of \cite{llw}, where the authors studied the eigenvalue distribution $μ_{X_N}$ of random block Toeplitz band matrices with given block order $m$. In this note we will give explicit density functions of $\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}$ when the bandwidth grows slowly. In fact, these densities are exactly the normalized one-point correlation functions of $m\times m$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE for short). The series $\{\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}μ_{X_N}|m\in\mathbb{N}\}$ can be seen as a transition from the standard normal distribution to semicircle dist…
We study the spectra of general $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrices given by symbols in the Wiener Algebra perturbed by small complex Gaussian random matrices, in the regime $N\gg 1$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix in smooth domains. We show that these eigenvalues follow a Weyl law with probability sub-exponentially close to $1$, as $N\gg1$, in particular that most eigenvalues of the perturbed Toeplitz matrix are close to the curve in the complex plane given by the symbol of the unperturbed Toeplitz matrix.
Consider the ensemble of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices whose entries are i.i.d random variables chosen from a fixed probability distribution p of mean 0, variance 1 and finite higher moments. Previous work [BDJ,HM] showed that the limiting spectral measures (the density of normalized eigenvalues) converge weakly and almost surely to a universal distribution almost that of the Gaussian, independent of p. The deficit from the Gaussian distribution is due to obstructions to solutions of Diophantine equations and can be removed (see [MMS]) by making the first row palindromic. In this paper, we …
Consider random symmetric Toeplitz matrices $T_{n}=(a_{i-j})_{i,j=1}^{n}$ with matrix entries $a_{j}, j=0,1,2,...,$ being independent real random variables such that \be \mathbb{E}[a_{j}]=0, \ \ \mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{2}]=1 \ \ \textrm{for}\,\ \ j=0,1,2,...,\ee (homogeneity of 4-th moments) \be{κ=\mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{4}],}\ee \noindent and further (uniform boundedness)\be\sup\limits_{j\geq 0} \mathbb{E}[|a_{j}|^{k}]=C_{k}<\iy\ \ \ \textrm{for} \ \ \ k\geq 3.\ee Under the assumption of $a_{0}\equiv 0$, we prove a central limit theorem for linear statistics of eigenvalues for a fixed polynomial with…
We study the spectra of $N\times N$ Toeplitz band matrices perturbed by small complex Gaussian random matrices, in the regime $N\gg 1$. We prove a probabilistic Weyl law, which provides an precise asymptotic formula for the number of eigenvalues in certain domains, which may depend on $N$, with probability sub-exponentially (in $N$) close to $1$. We show that most eigenvalues of the perturbed Toeplitz matrix are at a distance of at most $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1+\varepsilon})$, for all $\varepsilon >0$, to the curve in the complex plane given by the symbol of the unperturbed Toeplitz matrix.
Consider the ensemble of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices, each independent entry an i.i.d. random variable chosen from a fixed probability distribution p of mean 0, variance 1, and finite higher moments. Previous investigations showed that the limiting spectral measure (the density of normalized eigenvalues) converges weakly and almost surely, independent of p, to a distribution which is almost the standard Gaussian. The deviations from Gaussian behavior can be interpreted as arising from obstructions to solutions of Diophantine equations. We show that these obstructions vanish if instead one…
Consider real symmetric, complex Hermitian Toeplitz and real symmetric Hankel band matrix models, where the bandwidth $b_{N}\ra \iy$ but $b_{N}/N \to b$, $b\in [0,1]$ as $N\to \infty$. We prove that the distributions of eigenvalues converge weakly to universal, symmetric distributions $γ_{_{T}}(b)$ and $γ_{_{H}}(b)$. In the case $b>0$ or $b=0$ but with the addition of $b_{N}\geq C N^{{1/2}+ε_{0}}$ for some positive constants $ε_{0}$ and $C$, we prove almost sure convergence. The even moments of these distributions are the sum of some integrals related to certain pair partitions. In particular,…
In this work, we consider symmetric random Toeplitz matrices $T_n$ generated by i.i.d. zero mean random variables ${X_k}$ satisfying the moment conditions: $E|X_k|^2=1$ and $\E|X_1|^n \le n^{\sqrt{n}}$ for all $n\ge 3$. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of $T_n$ scaled by $\sqrt{n log(n)}$ converges almost surely to $1$.
We consider the eigenvalues of a fixed, non-normal matrix subject to a small additive perturbation. In particular, we consider the case when the fixed matrix is a banded Toeplitz matrix, where the bandwidth is allowed to grow slowly with the dimension, and the perturbation matrix is drawn from one of several different random matrix ensembles. We establish a number of non-asymptotic results for the eigenvalues of this model, including a local law and a rate of convergence in Wasserstein distance of the empirical spectral measure to its limiting distribution. In addition, we define the classical…
We study a class of rotation invariant determinantal ensembles in the complex plane; examples include the eigenvalues of Gaussian random matrices and the roots of certain families of random polynomials. The main result is a criteria for a central limit theorem to hold for angular statistics of the points. The proof exploits an exact formula relating the generating function of such statistics to the determinant of a perturbed Toeplitz matrix.
We study the limiting spectral measure of large symmetric random matrices of linear algebraic structure. For Hankel and Toeplitz matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_k\}$ of unit variance, and for symmetric Markov matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_{ij}\}_{j>i}$ of zero mean and unit variance, scaling the eigenvalues by $\sqrt{n}$ we prove the almost sure, weak convergence of the spectral measures to universal, nonrandom, symmetric distributions $γ_H$, $γ_M$ and $γ_T$ of unbounded support. The moments of $γ_H$ and $γ_T$ are the sum of volumes of solids related to …
We consider the ensemble of adjacency matrices of Erd{\H o}s-Rényi random graphs, i.e.\ graphs on $N$ vertices where every edge is chosen independently and with probability $p \equiv p(N)$. We rescale the matrix so that its bulk eigenvalues are of order one. Under the assumption $p N \gg N^{2/3}$, we prove the universality of eigenvalue distributions both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. More precisely, we prove (1) that the eigenvalue spacing of the Erd{\H o}s-Rényi graph in the bulk of the spectrum has the same distribution as that of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble; and (2) tha…
Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has successfully modeled diverse systems, from energy levels of heavy nuclei to zeros of $L$-functions; this correspondence has allowed RMT to successfully predict many number theoretic behaviors. However there are some operations which to date have no RMT analogue. Our motivation is to find an RMT analogue of Rankin-Selberg convolution, which constructs a new $L$-functions from an input pair. We report one such attempt; while it does not appear to model convolution, it does create new ensembles with properties hybridizing those of its constituents. For definiteness …
We study random points on the real line generated by the eigenvalues in unitary invariant random matrix ensembles or by more general repulsive particle systems. As the number of points tends to infinity, we prove convergence of the empirical distribution of nearest neighbor spacings. We extend existing results for the spacing distribution in two ways. On the one hand, we believe the empirical distribution to be of more practical relevance than the so far considered expected distribution. On the other hand, we use the unfolding, a non-linear rescaling, which transforms the ensemble such that th…
Let $T_N$ denote an $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrix with finite, $N$ independent symbol ${\bf a}$. For $E_N$ a noise matrix satisfying mild assumptions (ensuring, in particular, that $N^{-1/2}\|E_N\|_{\rm HS}\to_{N\to\infty} 0$ at a polynomial rate), we prove that the empirical measure of eigenvalues of $T_N+E_N$ converges to the law of ${\bf a}(U)$, where $U$ is uniformly distributed on the unit circle in the complex plane. This extends results from arXiv:1712.00042 to the non-triangular setup and non complex Gaussian noise, and confirms predictions obtained in Reichel and Trefethen (1992) using …
The purpose of this article is to study the eigenvalues $u_1^{\, t}=e^{itθ_1},\dots,u_N^{\,t}=e^{itθ_N}$ of $U^t$ where $U$ is a large $N\times N$ random unitary matrix and $t>0$. In particular we are interested in the typical times $t$ for which all the eigenvalues are simultaneously close to $1$ in different ways thus corresponding to recurrence times in the issue of quantum measurements. Our strategy consists in rewriting the problem as a random matrix integral and use loop equations techniques to compute the first orders of the large $N$ asymptotic. We also connect the problem to the compu…
We consider the spectrum of additive, polynomially vanishing random perturbations of deterministic matrices, as follows. Let $M_N$ be a deterministic $N\times N$ matrix, and let $G_N$ be a complex Ginibre matrix. We consider the matrix $\mathcal{M}_N=M_N+N^{-γ}G_N$, where $γ>1/2$. With $L_N$ the empirical measure of eigenvalues of $\mathcal{M}_N$, we provide a general deterministic equivalence theorem that ties $L_N$ to the singular values of $z-M_N$, with $z\in \mathbb{C}$. We then compute the limit of $L_N$ when $M_N$ is an upper triangular Toeplitz matrix of finite symbol: if $M_N=\sum_{i=0…
Consider an $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrix $T_N$ with symbol ${a }(λ) := \sum_{\ell=-d_2}^{d_1} a_\ell λ^\ell$, perturbed by an additive noise matrix $N^{-γ} E_N$, where the entries of $E_N$ are centered i.i.d.~random variables of unit variance and $γ>1/2$. It is known that the empirical measure of eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix converges weakly, as $N\to\infty$, to the law of ${a}(U)$, where $U$ is distributed uniformly on $\mathbb{S}^1$. In this paper, we consider the outliers, i.e. eigenvalues that are at a positive ($N$-independent) distance from ${a}(\mathbb{S}^1)$. We prove that there …
We show that the distribution of bulk spacings between pairs of adjacent eigenvalue real parts of a random matrix drawn from the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble is asymptotically given by a generalization of the Gaudin-Mehta distribution, in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. The same generalization is expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlevé function and it is shown that the generalized Gaudin-Mehta distribution describes the crossover, with increasing degree of non-Hermiticity, from Gaudin-Mehta nearest-neighbor bulk statistics in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to Poisson gap …
We consider the universality of the nearest neighbour eigenvalue spacing distribution in invariant random matrix ensembles. Focussing on orthogonal and symplectic invariant ensembles, we show that the empirical spacing distribution converges in a uniform way. More precisely, the main result states that the expected Kolmogorov distance of the empirical spacing distribution from its universal limit converges to zero as the matrix size tends to infinity.
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
