The Laplace transform of $|ζ(1/2+it)|$ is investigated, for which a precise expression is obtained, valid in a certain region in the complex plane. The method of proof is based on complex integration and spectral theory of the non-Euclidean Laplacian.
An overview of results and problems concerning the asymptotic formula for $\int_0^T|ζ(1/2+it)|^4dt$ is given, together with a discussion of modern methods from spectral theory used in recent work on this subject.
This paper gives a survey of known results concerning the Laplace transform $$ L_k(s) := \int_0^\infty |ζ(1/2+ ix)|^{2k}{\rm e}^{-sx}{\rm d} x \qquad(k \in N, \R s > 0), $$ and the (modified) Mellin transform $$ {\cal Z}_k(s) := \int_1^\infty|ζ(1/2+ ix)|^{2k}x^{-s}{\rm d} x\qquad(k\in N), $$ where the integral is absolutely convergent for $\R s \ge c(k) > 1$. Also some new results on these integral transforms of $|ζ(1/2+ ix)|^{2k}$ are given, which have important connections with power moments of the Riemann zeta-function $ζ(s)$.
We provide explicit ranges for $σ$ for which the asymptotic formula \begin{equation*} \int_0^T|ζ(1/2+it)|^4|ζ(σ+it)|^{2j}dt \;\sim\; T\sum_{k=0}^4a_{k,j}(σ)\log^k T \quad(j\in\mathbb N) \end{equation*} holds as $T\rightarrow \infty$, when $1\leq j \leq 6$, where $ζ(s)$ is the Riemann zeta-function. The obtained ranges improve on an earlier result of the authors [Annales Univ. Sci. Budapest., Sect. Comp. {\bf38}(2012), 233-244]. An application to a divisor problem is also given
The aim of the present work is to exhibit a new proof of the explicit spectral expansion for the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta-function that was established by the second named author a decade ago. Our proof is new, particularly in the sense that it dispenses completely with the Kloostermania, the spectral theory of sums of Kloosterman sums that was used in the former proof. The argument is now constructed precisely upon the spectral structure of the Lie group PSL(2,R). Main ingredients in our argument are the theory of automorphic representations as well as the harmonic analysis on the bi…
In this paper, the first part of a larger work, we prove the spectral decomposition of $$ \int_{-\infty}^\infty|ζ(\s+it)|^4g(t){\rm d}t\qquad(\hf < σ< 1 {\rm {fixed}}), $$ where $g(t)$ is a suitable weight function of fast decay. This is used to obtain estimates and omega results for the function $$\eqalign{E_2(T,σ) &: =\int_0^T|ζ(σ+it)|^4{rm d}t - {ζ^4(2σ)\overζ(4σ)}T -{T\over3-4σ}{({T\over2π} )}^{2-4σ}{ζ^4(2-2σ)\overζ(4-4σ)}\cr& - T^{2-2σ}(a_0(σ) + a_1(σ)\log T + a_2(σ)\log^2T),\cr} $$ the error term in the asymptotic formula for the fourth moment of $|ζ(σ+it)|$.
We prove the Kloosterman-Spectral sum formula for PSL(2,Z[i])\PSL(2,C), and apply it to derive an explicit spectral expansion for the fourth power moment of the Dedekind zeta function of the Gaussian number field. This sum formula allows the extension of the spectral theory of Kloosterman sums to all algebraic number fields.
We examine the calculation of the second and fourth moments and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations. Previously this approach has proved unsuccessful in computing moments beyond the eighth, even heuristically. A careful analysis of the second and fourth moments illustrates the nature of the problem and enables us to identify the terms that are missed in the standard application of these methods.
This is part II of our examination of the second and fourth moments and shifted moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line using long Dirichlet polynomials and divisor correlations.
For a complex variable $s$ and real parameters $a$ and $λ$ with $a>0$, let $ϕ(s,a,λ)$ denote the Lerch zeta-function with a complex variable, $ϕ^{\ast}(s,a,λ)$ a slight modification of $ϕ(s,a,λ)$ defined by extracting the (possible) singularity of $ϕ(s,a,λ)$ at $s=1$, and $(ϕ^{\ast})^{(m)}(s,a,λ)$ for any $m\in\mathbb{Z}$ the $m$th derivative with respect to $s$ if $m\geq0$, while if $m\leq0$ the $|m|$-th primitive defined with its initial point at $s+\infty$. The present paper aims to study asymptotic aspects of $(ϕ^{\ast})^{(m)}(s,a,λ)$, transformed through the Laplace-Mellin and Riemann-Lio…
In this unpublished note, we sketch an idea of using a three-piece mollifier to slightly improve the known percentages of zeros and simple zeros of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line. This uses the recent result of Bettin, Bui, Li and Radziwill [BBLR] on the twisted fourth moment of the Riemann zeta-function.
The aim of the present article is to reveal a structure shared by two basic zeta-functions in their fourth power moments through the view point of representation theory of Lie groups, relying specifically upon the Kirillov model. It might induce one to ponder over the possibility to go beyond.
A new interpretation of zeta functions is given for F1-schemes which do not satisfy Soulé's condition. Functional equations for reductive groups are computed and a new definition of zeta functions attached to more general counting functions is given which is based on regularization and puts on an equal footing F1-theory on the one hand and spectral theory of Laplace operators on manifolds on the other.
We estimate asymptotically the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta-function twisted by a Dirichlet polynomial of length $T^{\frac14 - \varepsilon}$. Our work relies crucially on Watt's theorem on averages of Kloosterman fractions. In the context of the twisted fourth moment, Watt's result is an optimal replacement for Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture. Our work extends the previous result of Hughes and Young, where Dirichlet polynomials of length $T^{\frac{1}{11}-\varepsilon}$ were considered. Our result has several applications, among others to the proportion of critical zeros of the Riemann zeta…
We generalize the Raabe-formula to the $q$-loggamma function. As a consequence, we get that the integral of the logarithm of the fourth Jacobi theta function between its least imaginary zeros is connected to the partition function and the Riemann zeta function.
We use recently obtained bounds for sums of Kloosterman sums to bound the sum $\sum_{-D\leq d\leq D} \int_{-D}^D |ζ(1/2+it,λ^d)|^4| \sum_{0<|μ|^2\leq M} A(μ)λ^d((μ)) |μ|^{-2it}|^2 {\rm d}t$, where $λ^d$ is the groessencharacter satisfying $λ^d((α)) = λ^d(α{\Bbb Z}[i]) = (α/|α|)^{4d}$, for $0\neqα\in{\Bbb Z}[i]$, and $ζ(s,λ^d)$ is the Hecke zeta function that satisfies $ζ(s,λ^d) =(1/4)\sum_{0\neqα\in{\Bbb Z}[i]} λ^d((α)) |α|^{-2s}$ for $\Re(s)>1$, while the numbers $D,M\in(0,\infty)$ and function $A:{\Bbb Z}[i]-\{0\}\rightarrow{\Bbb C}$ are arbitrary (though it is only in respect of cases in wh…
In this paper, we present some results on the $a$-points of the symmetric sum of the Euler-Zagier multiple zeta function. Our first three results are for the $a$-points free region of the function. The fourth result is the Riemann-von Mangoldt type formula. In the last two results, we study the real parts of $a$-points of the function.
Let $Δ(x)$ and $E(x)$ be error terms of the sum of divisor function and the mean square of the Riemann zeta function, respectively. In this paper their fourth power moments for short intervals of Jutila's type are considered. We get an asymptotic formula for $U$ in some range.
Some results and conjectures on $Z_2(s) = \int_1^\infty |ζ(1/2+ix)|^4x^{-s}dx (\Re s > 1)$ are presented. Consequences of these conjectures regarding the eighth moment of $|ζ(1/2+it)$ and the error term in the fourth moment of $|ζ(1/2+it)$ are discussed.
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
In this article we initiate the study of the heat traces and spectral zeta functions for certain p-adic Laplacians. We show that the heat traces are given by p-adic integrals of Laplace type, and that the spectral zeta functions are p-adic integrals of Igusa-type. We find good estimates for the behaviour of the heat traces when the time tends to infinity, and for the asymptotics of the function counting the eigenvalues less than or equal to a given quantity.
We prove sub-convex bounds on the fourth moment of Hecke-Laplace eigenforms on $S^3$. As a corollary, we get a bound on the sup-norm on an individual eigenform, which constitutes an improvement over what is achievable through employing the Iwaniec-Sarnak amplifier.
Discrete moments of the Riemann zeta function were studied by Gonek and Hejhal in the 1980's. They independently formulated a conjecture concerning the size of these moments. In 1999, Hughes, Keating, and O'Connell, by employing a random matrix model, made this conjecture more precise. Subject to the Riemann hypothesis, we establish upper and lower bounds of the correct order of magnitude in the case of the fourth moment.
We prove that the fourth moment of holomorphic Hecke cusp forms is bounded provided that the Riemann Hypothesis holds for an appropriate degree 8 L-function. We accomplish this using Watson's formula, which translates the question in hand into a moment problem for L-functions which is amenable to the techniques of Soundararajan and Harper on obtaining sharp bounds for moments of the Riemann zeta function.
We show that the splitting conjecture in the hybrid model of Gonek--Hughes--Keating holds to order on the Riemann hypothesis. Our results are valid in a larger range of the parameter $X$ which mediates between the partial Euler and Hadamard products. We also show that the asymptotic splitting conjecture holds for this larger range of $X$ in the cases of the second and fourth moments.
We prove an asymptotic formula for the second moment of a product of two Dirichlet L-functions on the critical line, which has a power saving in the error term and which is uniform with respect to the involved Dirichlet characters. As special cases we give uniform asymptotic formulae for the fourth moment of individual Dirichlet L-functions and for the second moment of Dedekind zeta functions of quadratic number fields on the critical line.
We make explicit an argument of Heath-Brown concerning large and small gaps between nontrivial zeroes of the Riemann zeta-function, $ζ(s)$. In particular, we provide the first unconditional results on gaps (large and small) which hold for a positive proportion of zeroes. To do this we prove explicit bounds on the second and fourth power moments of $S(t+h)-S(t)$, where $S(t)$ denotes the argument of $ζ(s)$ on the critical line and $h \ll 1 / \log T$. We also use these moments to prove explicit results on the density of the nontrivial zeroes of $ζ(s)$ of a given multiplicity.
Motohashi established an explicit identity between the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta function weighted by some test function and a spectral cubic moment of automorphic L-functions. By an entirely different method, we prove a generalization of this formula to a fourth moment of Dirichlet L-functions modulo q weighted by a non-archimedean test function. This establishes a new reciprocity formula. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the fourth moment twisted by the square of a Dirichlet polynomial of length q^{1/4}. An auxiliary result of independent interest is a sharp upper …
We obtain the asymptotic main term of moments of arbitrary derivatives of $L$-functions in the function field setting. Specifically, the first, second, and mixed fourth moments. The average is taken over all non-trivial characters of a prime modulus $Q \in \mathbb{F}_q [t]$, and the asymptotic limit is as $\mathrm{deg} \, Q \longrightarrow \infty$. This extends the work of Tamam who obtained the asymptotic main term of low moments of $L$-functions, without derivatives, in the function field setting. It also expands on the work of Conrey, Rubinstein, and Snaith who cojectured, using random matr…
This is a rework of our old file, which has been left unpublished since September 1994, on an explicit spectral decomposition of the fourth power moment of the Riemann zeta-function against a weight which is the square of a Dirichlet polynomial. At this occasion we add an explicit treatment of generalized Kloosterman sums associated with arbitrary Hecke congruence subgroups (Section 15), which might have an independent interest. At the end (Section 36) of our discussion, we set out a few problems on the distribution of eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian, which appear to us to be related t…
Hardy and Littlewood initiated the study of the $2k$-th moments of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line. In 1918 Hardy and Littlewood established an asymptotic formula for the second moment and in 1926 Ingham established an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment. Since then no other moments have been asymptotically evaluated. In this article we study the sixth moment of the zeta function on the critical line. We show that a conjectural formula for a certain family of ternary additive divisor sums implies an asymptotic formula with power savings error term for the sixth moment of th…
We study the spectral functions, and in particular the zeta function, associated to a class of sequences of complex numbers, called of spectral type. We investigate the decomposability of the zeta function associated to a double sequence with respect to some simple sequence, and we provide a technique for obtaining the first terms in the Laurent expansion at zero of the zeta function associated to a double sequence. We particularize this technique to the case of sums of sequences of spectral type, and we give two applications: the first concerning some special functions appearing in number the…
Results of extensive computations of moments of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line are presented. Calculated values are compared with predictions motivated by random matrix theory. The results can help in deciding between those and competing predictions. It is shown that for high moments and at large heights, the variability of moment values over adjacent intervals is substantial, even when those intervals are long, as long as a block containing 10^9 zeros near zero number 10^23. More than anything else, the variability illustrates the limits of what one can learn about the zeta fu…
We point out an interesting occurrence of the sine kernel in connection with the shifted moments of the Riemann zeta function along the critical line. We discuss rigorous results in this direction for the shifted second moment and for the shifted fourth moment. Furthermore, we conjecture that the sine kernel also occurs in connection with the higher (even) shifted moments and show that this conjecture is closely related to a recent conjecture by Conrey, Farmer, Keating, Rubinstein, and Snaith.
The main aim of this article is to develop, in a fully detailed fashion, a {\bf unified} theory of the spectral theory of mean values of individual automorphic L-functions which is a natural extension of the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta-function but does not admit any analogous argument and requires a genuinely new method. Thus we first develop a relatively self-contained account of the theory of automorphic representations, especially highlighting the Kirillov model, with which we resolve the problem on the mean value of those L-functions. As another reward, we gain a geometrical underst…
Albeit essential corrections are required both in his claim and in his argument, N.V. Kuznetsov observed in his Bombay article (*) of 1989 a highly interesting transformation formula for spectral sums of products of four values of modular Hecke L-functions. A complete proof of a corrected version of the formula was later supplied by the present author in 1991, which has, however, remained unpublished for more than a decade, except for a limited distribution. The aim of the present paper is to reproduce this proof of the author with some sophistications, retaining the original style as much as …
Let $Δ(x)$ denote the error term in the Dirichlet divisor problem, and $E(T)$ the error term in the asymptotic formula for the mean square of $|ζ(1/2 + it)|$. If $E^*(t) = E(t) - 2πΔ^*(t/(2π))$ with $Δ^*(x) = - Δ(x) +2Δ(2x)- {1\over2}Δ(4x)$, then we obtain $$ \int_0^T(E^*(t))^4 dt \ll_εT^{16/19+varepsilon}$$, which is the first non-trivial bound for higher moments of $E^*(t)$. The method of proof also provides an upper bound for sums of fourth powers of mean square integrals of $|ζ(1/2 + it)|$ over well-spaced points. This, in turn, yields a new proof of the twelfth moment estimate for $|ζ(1/2…
Conditionally on the Riemann Hypothesis we obtain bounds of the correct order of magnitude for the 2k-th moment of the Riemann zeta-function for all positive real k < 2.181. This provides for the first time an upper bound of the correct order of magnitude for some k > 2; the case of k = 2 corresponds to a classical result of Ingham. We prove our result by establishing a connection between moments with k > 2 and the so-called "twisted fourth moment". This allows us to appeal to a recent result of Hughes and Young. Furthermore we obtain a point-wise bound for |zeta(1/2 + it)|^{2r} (with 0 < r < …
Four propositions are considered concerning the relationship between the zeros of two combinations of the Riemann zeta function and the function itself. The first is the Riemann hypothesis, while the second relates to the zeros of a derivative function. It is proved that these are equivalent, and that, if the Riemann hypothesis holds, then all zeros of the zeta function on the critical line are simple. The Riemann hypothesis is then shown to imply the third proposition holds, this being a new necessary condition for the Riemann hypothesis. The third proposition is shown to be equivalent to the…
Recently S. Laporta published a partial result on the fourth order QED contribution to the electron anomalous magnetic moment $g-2$. This result contains explicit polylogarithmic parts with fourth and sixth roots of unity. In this note we convert Laporta's result into the motivic `$f$ alphabet'. This provides a much shorter expression which makes the Galois structure visible. We conjecture the $Q$ vector spaces of Galois conjugates of the QED $g-2$ up to weight four. The conversion into the $f$ alphabet relies on a conjecture by D. Broadhurst that iterated integrals in certain Lyndon words pro…
The purpose of this paper concerns to establish modified q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight (α,β). In this paper we investigate special generalized q-Genocchi polynomials and we apply the method of generating function, which are exploited to derive further classes of q-Genocchi polynomials and develop q-Genocchi numbers and polynomials. By using the Laplace-Mellin transformation integral, we define q-Zeta function with weight (α,β) and by presenting a link between q-Zeta function with weight (α,β) and q-Genocchi numbers with weight (α,β) we obtain an interpolation formula for the q…
