Let $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ)$ be a probability measure space and $T_1$, $T_2$, $T_3$ three not necessarily commuting measure preserving transformations on $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ)$. We prove that for all bounded functions $f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3$ the averages $$\frac{1}{N^2}\sum_{n, m =1}^N f_1(T_1^nx)f_2(T_2^mx)f_3(T_3^{n+m}x)$$ converges a.e. Generalizations to averages of $2^k -1$ functions are also given for not necessarily commuting weakly mixing systems.
Let $(X,\mathcal{B},μ, T)$ be a measure preserving system. We prove the pointwise convergence of averages along cubes of $2^{k}-1$ bounded and measurable functions for all $k$.
Let $(X,\mathcal{B},μ, T)$ be a measure preserving system. We prove the pointwise convergence of the averages $$\frac{1}{N^2}\sum_{n,m= 0}^{N-1} f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^mx)f_3(T^{n+m}x)$$ and of similar averages with seven bounded functions.
We study algebraic properties of groups of PL or smooth homeomorphisms of unit cubes in any dimension, fixed pointwise on the boundary, and more generally PL or smooth groups acting on manifolds and fixing pointwise a submanifold of codimension 1 (resp. codimension 2), and show that such groups are locally indicable (resp. circularly orderable). We also give many examples of interesting groups that can act, and discuss some other algebraic constraints that such groups must satisfy, including the fact that a group of PL homeomorphisms of the n-cube (fixed pointwise on the boundary) contains no …
We study the pointwise convergence of some weighted averages linked to averages along cubes. We show that if $(X,\mathcal{B},μ, T_i)$ are not necessarily commuting measure preserving systems on the same finite measure space and if $f_i,$ $1\leq i\leq 6$ are bounded functions then the averages $$\frac{1}{N^3}\sum_{n, m, p=1}^N f_1(T_1^nx) f_2(T_2^mx) f_3(T_3^px) f_4(T_4^{n+m}x) f_5(T_5^{n+p}x) f_6(T_6^{m+p}x)$$ converge almost everywhere.
Let $(X,\mathcal{A}, μ)$ be a probability measure space and let $T_i,$ $1\leq i\leq H,$ be commuting invertible measure preserving transformations on this measure space. We prove the following pointwise results; The averages $$\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T_1^nx)f_2(T_2^nx)\cdots f_H(T_H^nx)$$ converge a.e. for every function $f_i \in L^{\infty}(μ)$ .\\ As a consequence if $T_i = T^i$ for $1\leq i \leq H$ where $T$ is an invertible measure preserving transformation on $(X, \mathcal{A}, μ)$ then the averages $$\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^{2n}x)...f_H(T^{Hn}x)$$ converge a.e. This solv…
Huang, Shao and Ye recently studied pointwise multiple averages by using suitable topological models. Using a notion of dynamical cubes introduced by the authors, the Huang-Shao-Ye technique and the Host machinery of magic systems, we prove that for a system $(X,μ,S,T)$ with commuting transformations $S$ and $T$, the average \[\frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{i,j=0}^{N-1} f_0(S^i x)f_1(T^j x)f_2(S^i T^j x)\] converges a.e. as $N$ goes to infinity for any $f_1,f_2,f_3\in L^{\infty}(μ)$.
Amos Nevo established the pointwise ergodic theorem in $L^p$ for measure-preserving actions of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ on probability spaces with respect to ball averages and every $p>1$. This paper shows by explicit example that Nevo's Theorem cannot be extended to $p=1$.
The well-known Jewett-Krieger's Theorem states that each ergodic system has a strictly ergodic model. Strengthening the model by requiring that it is strictly ergodic under some group actions, and building the connection of the new model with the convergence of pointwise non-conventional ergodic averages we prove that for an ergodic system $(X,\X,μ, T)$, $d\in\N$, $f_1, \ldots, f_d \in L^{\infty}(μ)$, %and any tempered F{\rm $ø$}lner sequence $F_n$ of $\Z^2$, the averages \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{(n,m)\in F_N} f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^{n+m}x)\ldots f_d(T^{n+(d-1)m}x) \end{equation*} converg…
We prove pointwise convergence for the semi-radial averages on $G=SL_2(\mathbb{R})$ given by $\int_t^{t+1} m_K\ast δ_{a_{s}}ds$ (and similar variants), acting on $K$-finite $L^p$-functions in a probability-measure-preserving action of the group, for $p > 1$.
Let $F_2$ denote the free group on two generators $a,b$. For any measure-preserving system $(X, {\mathcal X}, μ, (T_g)_{g \in F_2})$ on a finite measure space $X = (X,{\mathcal X},μ)$, any $f \in L^1(X)$, and any $n \geq 1$, define the averaging operators $${\mathcal A}_n f(x) := \frac{1}{4 \times 3^{n-1}} \sum_{g \in F_2: |g| = n} f( T_g^{-1} x ),$$ where $|g|$ denotes the word length of $g$. We give an example of a measure-preserving system $X$ and an $f \in L^1(X)$ such that the sequence ${\mathcal A}_n f(x)$ is unbounded in $n$ for almost every $x$, thus showing that the pointwise and maxi…
We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving several not necessarily commuting measure preserving transformations. We work on two types of averages, one that uses iterates along combinatorial parallelepipeds, and another that uses iterates along shifted polynomials. We prove pointwise convergence in both cases, thus answering a question of I.Assani in the former case, and extending results of B.Host-B.Kra and A.Leibman in the latter case. Our argument is based on some elementary uniformity estimates of general bounded sequences, decomposition results in ergodic theory,…
In 1967, Ross and Strömberg published a theorem about pointwise limits of orbital integrals for the left action of a locally compact group $G$ onto $(G,ρ)$, where $ρ$ is the right Haar measure. In this paper, we study the same kind of problem, but more generally for left actions of $G$ onto any measured space $(X,μ)$, which leaves the $σ$-finite measure $μ$ relatively invariant, in the sense that $sμ= Δ(s)μ$ for every $s\in G$, where $Δ$ is the modular function of $G$. As a consequence, we also obtain a generalization of a theorem of Civin, relative to one-parameter groups of measure preservin…
It is shown that there exist a subsequence for which the multiple ergodic averages of commuting invertible measure preserving transformations of a Lebesgue probability space converge almost everywhere provided that the maps are weakly mixing with an ergodic extra condition. The proof provides a example of non-singular dynamical system for which the maximal ergodic inequality does not hold. We further get that the non-singular strategy to solve the pointwise convergence of the Furstenberg ergodic averages fails.
It is well-known that a strict analogue of the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem in infinite ergodic theory is trivial; it states that for any infinite-measure-preserving ergodic system the Birkhoff average of every integrable function is almost everywhere zero. Nor does a different rescaling of the Birkhoff sum that leads to a non-degenerate pointwise limit exist. In this paper we give a version of Birkhoff's theorem for conservative, ergodic, infinite-measure-preserving dynamical systems where instead of integrable functions we use certain elements of $L^\infty$, which we generically call global obse…
For any measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T_1,\ldots,T_d),$ where we assume no commutativity on the transformations $T_i,$ $1\leq i\leq d,$ we study the pointwise convergence of multiple ergodic averages with iterates of different growth coming from a large class of sublinear functions. This class properly contains important subclasses of Hardy field functions of order $0$ and of Fejér functions, i.e., tempered functions of order $0.$ We show that the convergence of the single average, via an invariant property, implies the convergence of the multiple one. We also provide examples of…
Classical ergodic theory deals with measure (or measure class) preserving actions of locally compact groups on Lebesgue spaces. An important tool in this setting is a theorem of Mackey which provides spatial models for Boolean G-actions. We show that in full generality this theorem does not hold for actions of Polish groups. In particular there is no Borel model for the Polish automorphism group of a Gaussian measure. In fact, we show that this group as well as many other Polish groups do not admit any nontrivial Borel measure preserving actions.
Let $\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n)$ be the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of $D^2$ fixing the boundary pointwise and $n$ marked points as a set. Nielsen realization problem for the braid group asks whether the natural projection $p_n:\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n)\to B_n:=π_0(\text{Homeo}_+(D^2_n))$ has a section over subgroups of $B_n$. All of the previous methods either use torsions or Thurston stability, which do not apply to the pure braid group $PB_n$, the subgroup of $B_n$ that fixes $n$ marked points pointwise. In this paper, we show that the pure braid group has no realization inside th…
We show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is an ergodic measure preserving system with commuting transformations $S$ and $T$, then the average \[\frac{1}{N^3} \sum_{i,j,k=0}^{N-1} f_0(S^j T^k x) f_1 (S^{i+j} T^k x) f_2 (S^j T^{i+k} x)\] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_0,f_1, f_2\in L^\infty(μ)$. We also show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is a measurable distal system, the average \[ \frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=0}^{N-1} f_1 (S^i x) f_2 (T^i x) \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_1,f_2\in L^{\infty}(μ)$.
Let $a_n$ be the random increasing sequence of natural numbers which takes each value independently with decreasing probability of order $n^{-α}$, $0 < α< 1/2$. We prove that, almost surely, for every measure-preserving system $(X,T)$ and every $f \in L^1(X)$ orthogonal to the invariant factor, the modulated, random averages \[ \sup_{b} \Big| \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n = 1}^N b(n) T^{a_{n}} f \Big| \] converge to $0$ pointwise almost everywhere, where the supremum is taken over a set of bounded functions with certain uniform approximation properties.
We construct an almost everywhere approximately differentiable, orientation and measure preserving homeomorphism of a unit $n$-dimensional cube onto itself, whose Jacobian is equal to $-1$ a.e. Moreover we prove that our homeomorphism can be uniformly approximated by orientation and measure preserving diffeomorphisms.
Let $a_n$ be the random increasing sequence of natural numbers which takes each value independently with probability $n^{-a}$, $0 < a < 1/2$, and let $p(n) = n^{1+ε}$, $0 < ε< 1$. We prove that, almost surely, for every measure-preserving system $(X,T)$ and every $f \in L^1(X)$ the modulated, random averages \[ \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n = 1}^N e(p(n)) T^{a_n(ω)} f\] converge to $0$ pointwise almost everywhere.
We prove a.e. convergence of continuous-time quadratic averages with respect to two commuting $\mathbb{R}$-actions, coming from a single jointly measurable measure-preserving $\mathbb{R}^2$-action on a probability space. The key ingredient of the proof comes from recent work on multilinear singular integrals; more specifically, from the study of a curved model for the triangular Hilbert transform.
In this note we prove the a pointwise ergodic theorem for functions taking values in a separable complete CAT(0)-space, analogous to Lindenstrauss' pointwise ergodic theorem for real-valued integrable functions on a probability space subject to a probability-preserving action of an amenable l.c.s.c. group, where in the CAT(0) setting the role of ergodic averages is played by the barycentres of the empirical distributions of a CAT(0)-valued map along an orbit of the group action. The proof rests on an approximation argument and an appeal to that result for real-valued maps.
We prove pointwise convergence, as $N\to \infty$, for the multiple ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f(T^nx)\cdot g(S^{a_n}x)$, where $T$ and $S$ are commuting measure preserving transformations, and $a_n$ is a random version of the sequence $[n^c]$ for some appropriate $c>1$. We also prove similar mean convergence results for averages of the form $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f(T^{a_n}x)\cdot g(S^{a_n}x)$, as well as pointwise results when $T$ and $S$ are powers of the same transformation. The deterministic versions of these results, where one replaces $a_n$ with $[n^c]$, remain open, and …
For measure preserving dynamical systems on metric spaces we study the time needed by a typical orbit to return back close to its starting point. We prove that when the decay of correlation is super-polynomial the recurrence rates and the pointwise dimensions are equal. This gives a broad class of systems for which the recurrence rate equals the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure.
We establish pointwise almost everywhere convergence for ergodic averages along polynomial sequences in nilpotent groups of step two of measure-preserving transformations on $σ$-finite measure spaces. We also establish corresponding maximal inequalities on $L^p$ for $1<p\leq \infty$ and $ρ$-variational inequalities on $L^2$ for $2<ρ<\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman conjecture in the linear case for all polynomial ergodic averages in discrete nilpotent groups of step two. Our proof is based on almost-orthogonality techniques that go far beyond Fouri…
We prove that for any bounded functions $f_1, f_2$ on a measure-preserving dynamical system $(X,T)$ and any distinct integers $a_1, a_2$, for almost every $x$ the sequence $$ f_1(T^{a_1 n}x) f_2(T^{a_2 n}x) $$ is a good weight for the pointwise ergodic theorem.
Cesaro convergence of spherical averages is proven for measure-preserving actions of Markov semigroups and groups. Convergence in the mean is established for functions in $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, and pointwise convergence for functions in $L^\infty$. In particular, for measure-preserving actions of word hyperbolic groups (in the sense of Gromov) we obtain Cesaro convergence of spherical averages with respect to any symmetric set of generators.
We show that a $k$-linear pointwise ergodic theorem on an ergodic measure-preserving system implies a uniform $k$-linear nilsequence Wiener-Wintner theorem on that system. The assumption is known to hold for arbitrary systems and $k=2$ (due to Bourgain) and for distal systems and arbitrary $k$ (due to Huang, Shao, and Ye).
Del Junco--Lemańczyk showed that a generic measure preserving transformation satisfies a certain orthogonality conditions. More precisely, there is a dense $G_δ$ subset of measure preserving transformations such that for every $T\in G$ and $k(1), k(2), \dots, k(l)\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, $k'(1), k'(2), \dots, k'(l')\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, the convolutions \[ σ_{T^{k(1)}} \ast\cdots\ast σ_{T^{k(l)}} \ \text{and} \ σ_{T^{k'(1)}} \ast\cdots \astσ_{T^{k'(l')}} \] are mutually singular, provided that $(k(1), k(2), \dots, k(l))$ is not a rearrangement of $(k'(1), k'(2), \dots, k'(l'))$. We will introduce an an…
We will show that the sequences appearing in Bourgain's double recurrence result are good universal weights to the multiple recurrence averages with commuting measure-preserving transformations in norm. This will extend the pointwise converge result of Bourgain, the norm convergence result of Tao, and the authors' previous work on the single measure-preserving transformation.
Let $Γ$ be a countably infinite group. A common theme in ergodic theory is to start with a probability measure-preserving (p.m.p.) action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ and a map $f \in L^1(X, μ)$, and to compare the global average $\int f \,\mathrm{d}μ$ of $f$ to the pointwise averages $|D|^{-1} \sum_{δ\in D} f(δ\cdot x)$, where $x \in X$ and $D$ is a nonempty finite subset of $Γ$. The basic hope is that, when $D$ runs over a suitably chosen infinite sequence, these pointwise averages should converge to the global value for $μ$-almost all $x$. In this paper we prove several results that refine th…

We consider the convergence of moving averages in the general setting of ergodic theory or stationary ergodic processes. We characterize when there is universal convergence of moving averages based on complete convergence to zero of the standard ergodic averages. Using a theorem of Hsu-Robbins (1947) for independent, identically distributed processes, we prove for any bounded measurable function $f$ on a standard probability space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$, there exists a Bernoulli shift $T$, such that all moving averages $M(v_n, L_n)^T f = \frac{1}{L_n} \sum_{i=v_n+1}^{v_n+L_n} f \circ T^i$ with $L…
We show that, for a generic measure preserving transformation $T$, the closed group generated by $T$ is not isomorphic to the topological group $L^0(λ, {\mathbb T})$ of all Lebesgue measurable functions from $[0,1]$ to $\mathbb T$ (taken with pointwise multiplication and the topology of convergence in measure). This result answers a question of Glasner and Weiss. The main step in the proof consists of showing that Koopman representations of ergodic boolean actions of $L^0(λ, {\mathbb T})$ possess a non-trivial spectral property not shared by all unitary representations of $L^0(λ, {\mathbb T})$…
We establish convergence in norm and pointwise almost everywhere for the non-conventional (in the sense of Furstenberg) bilinear polynomial ergodic averages \[ A_N(f,g)(x) := \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n =1}^N f(T^nx) g(T^{P(n)}x)\] as $N \to \infty$, where $T \colon X \to X$ is a measure-preserving transformation of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,μ)$, $P(\mathrm{n}) \in \mathbb Z[\mathrm{n}]$ is a polynomial of degree $d \geq 2$, and $f \in L^{p_1}(X), \ g \in L^{p_2}(X)$ for some $p_1,p_2 > 1$ with $\frac{1}{p_1} + \frac{1}{p_2} \leq 1$. We also establish an $r$-variational inequality for these avera…
