We give an upper bound for the index of certain Lie algebras, called of seaweed type, introduced by V. Dergachev, A. Kirillov and D. Panyushev. We deduce from this a conjecture of D. Panyushev stated in "Inductive formulas for the index of seaweed Lie algebra, Moscow Math. Journal (2001) 221-241". We conjecture that our upper bound gives in fact a formula for the index of such Lie algebras, and we prove it in certain cases. Finally, we obtain a result concerning the index of parabolic subalgebras of a semisimple Lie algebra.
We introduce the method of calculation of index of Lie algebras that are factors of the unitriangular Lie algebra with respect to ideals spanned by subsets of root vectors.
We characterize, in a purely algebraic manner, certain linear forms, called stable, on a Lie algebra. As an application, we determine the index of a Borel subalgebra of a semi-simple Lie algebra. Finally, we give an example of a parabolic subalgebra of a semi-simple Lie algebra which does not admit any stable linear form.
This is a continuation of arXiv:0903.0398 [math.RT]. Let g be a simple Lie algebra. In this note, we provide simple formulae for the index of sl(2)-subalgebras in the classical Lie algebras and a new formula for the index of the principal sl(2). We also compute the difference, D, of the indices of principal and subregular sl(2)-subalgebras. Our formula for D involves some data related to the McKay correspondence for g. Using the index of sl(2)-subalgebras of classical Lie algebras, we also obtain three series of interesting combinatorial identities parameterised by partitions.
For a finite dimensional complex Lie algebra, its index is the minimal dimension of stabilizers for the coadjoint action. A famous conjecture due to Elashvili says that the index of the centralizer of an element of a reductive Lie algebra is equal to the rank. That conjecture caught attention of several Lie theorists for years. In this paper we give an almost general proof of that conjecture.
In this paper we prove several theorems about the behavior of index of Lie algebras derived from associative algebras under tensor products of underlying associative algebras.
The filiform and the quasi-filiform Lie algebras form a special class of nilpotent Lie algebras. The aim of this paper is to compute the index and provide regular vectors of this two class of nilpotent Lie algebras. we consider the graded filiform Lie algebras $L_{n}$, $Q_{n}$, the $n$-dimensional filiform Lie algebras for $n$ $<8$, also the graded quasi-filiform Lie algebras and finally Lie algebras whose nilradical is $Q_{2n}$.
We generalize the results in [2] giving a reduction algorithm allowing to compute the index of seaweed subalgebras of classical simple Lie algebras. We thus are able to obtain the index of some interesting families of seaweed subalgebras and to give new examples of large classes of Frobenius Lie algebras among them.
The index of a seaweed Lie algebra can be computed from its associated meander graph. We examine this graph in several ways with a goal of determining families of Frobenius (index zero) seaweed algebras. Our analysis gives two new families of Frobenius seaweed algebras as well as elementary proofs of known families of such Lie algebras.
The index of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $g$ is the minimum of dimensions of stabilisers $g_α$ of elements $α\in g^*$. Let $g$ be a reductive Lie algebra and $z(x)$ a centraliser of a nilpotent element $x\in g$. Elashvili has conjectured that the index of the centraliser $z(x)$ equals the index of $g$, i.e., the rank of $g$. Here Elashvili's conjecture is proved for reductive Lie algebras of classical type. It is shown that in cases $g=gl_n$ and $g=sp_{2n}$ the coadjoint action of $z(x)$ has a generic stabiliser. Also, we give an example of a nilpotent element $x\in so_8$ such that the co…

I calculate characters of certain representations of loop groups based on non simply connected Lie groups. This gives a generalization of the Kac-Weyl character formula.
In this paper, we study the index for several natural classes of non-reductive subalgebras of semisimple Lie algebras. Namely, we look at parabolic subalgebras, centralisers of nilpotent elements, and the normalisers of the centralisers. We discuss a conjecture of Elashvili to the effect that the index of any centraliser is equal to the rank of the semisimple algebra in question. It is shown that Elashvili's conjecture is true for `small' and `large' orbits. Some properties of the index for the normaliser of the centraliser are proved. In particular, we prove that, for a regular nilpotent elem…
We present a new method of analysis of associative algebras. This method bears a certain resemblance to the famous analysis of commutative $C^*$-algebras in which an important role is played by multiplicative functionals over the algebra. These functionals can be considered as "rank 1" in the framework of our method. In our approach a special position is taken by generic (maximal rank) functionals, which reveal a wealth of information on the structure of non-commutative algebras. We apply this method to derive interesting properties of index of Lie algebras and to analyze finite-dimensional as…
Let M be a maximal subalgebra of the Lie algebra L. A subalgebra C of L is said to be a completion for M if C is not contained in M but every proper subalgebra of C that is an ideal of L is contained in M. The set I(M) of all completions of M is called the index complex of M in L. We use this concept to investigate the influence of the maximal subalgebras on the structure of a Lie algebra, in particular finding new characterisations of solvable and supersolvable Lie algebras.
Let $Q$ be an algebraic group with $q=\Lie Q$ and $V$ a $Q$-module. The index of $V$ is the minimal codimension of the $Q$-orbits in the dual space $V^*$. There is a general inequality, due to Vinberg, relating the index of $V$ and the index of a $Q_v$-module $V/q.v$ for $v\in V$. A pair $(Q,V)$ is said to have GIB if Vinberg's inequality turns into an equality for all $v\in V$. In this article, we are interested in the GIB property of $θ$-representations, where $θ$ is a finite order automorphism of a simple Lie algebra $g$. An automorphism of order $m$ defines a $Z/mZ$-grading $g=g_0+g_1+...+…
Using a K-theory point of view, Bott related the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators on compact homogeneous spaces to the Weyl character formula. This article explains how to prove the local index theorem for compact homogenous spaces using Lie algebra methods. The method follows in outline the proof of the local index theorem due to Berline and Vergne. But the use of Kostant's cubic Dirac operator in place of the Riemannian Dirac operator leads to substantial simplifications. An important role is also played by the quantum Weil algebra of Alekseev and Meinrenken.
We give some properties on the index of seaweed subalgebras of the complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ which allow to obtain formulas for the index of some interesting classes of this family and to give new families of Frobenius Lie algebras.
In this short note, we investigate the following question of Panyushev : ``Is the sum of the index of a parabolic subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and the index of its nilpotent radical always greater than or equal to the rank of $\mathfrak{g}$?''. Using the formula for the index of parabolic subalgebras conjectured by Tauvel and the author, and proved by Millet-Fauquant and Joseph, we give a positive answer to this question. Moreover, we also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for this sum to be equal to the rank of $\mathfrak{g}$. This provides new examples of d…
The associative ring $R(P(t))=\mathbb C[t^{\pm1},u \,|\, u^2=P(t)]$, where $P(t)=\sum_{i=0}^na_it^i=\prod_{k=1}^n(t-α_i)$ with $α_i\in\mathbb C$ pairwise distinct, is the coordinate ring of a hyperelliptic curve. The Lie algebra $\mathcal{R}(P(t))=\text{Der}(R(P(t)))$ of derivations is called the hyperelliptic Lie algebra associated to $P(t)$. In this paper we describe the universal central extension of $\text{Der}(R(P(t)))$ in terms of certain families of polynomials which in a particular case are associated Legendre polynomials. Moreover we describe certain families of polynomials that arise…
The Iwasawa decomposition $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \hat{\mathfrak{a}}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{n}_0$ of the real semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_0$ comes from its Cartan decomposition $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{p}_0$. Then we get $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{b}_0$ where $\mathfrak{b}_0=\hat{\mathfrak{a}}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{n}_0$. The question of knowing if the index were additive in the decomposition $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{b}_0$ goes back M. Raïs \cite{Rais}. In \cite{Moreau3}, I wrote that the index always is additive …
The index of a complex Lie algebra is the minimal codimension of its coadjoint orbits. Let us suppose $\g$ semisimple, then its index, ${\rm ind} \g$, is equal to its rank, ${\rm rk \g}$. The goal of this paper is to establish a simple general formula for the index of $\n(\g^ξ)$, for $ξ$ nilpotent, where $\n(\g^ξ)$ is the normaliser in $\g$ of the centraliser $\g^ξ$ of $ξ$. More precisely, we have to show the following result, conjectured by D. Panyushev \cite{Panyushev} : $${\rm ind} \n(\g^ξ) = {\rm rk \g}-\dim \z(\g^ξ),$$ where $\z(\g^ξ)$ is the center of $\g^ξ$. D. Panyushev obtained in \ci…
Let K be a field of positive characteristic p and KG the group algebra of a group G. It is known that if KG is Lie nilpotent then its upper (or lower) Lie nilpotency index is at most |G'|+1, where |G'| is the order of the commutator subgroup. The class of groups G for which these indices are maximal or almost maximal have already been determined. Here we determine G for which upper (or lower) Lie nilpotency index is the next highest possible.
For each two-dimensional vector space $V$ of commuting $n\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb F$ with at least 3 elements, we denote by $\widetilde V$ the vector space of all $(n+1)\times(n+1)$ matrices of the form $\left[\begin{smallmatrix}A&*\\0&0\end{smallmatrix}\right]$ with $A\in V$. We prove the wildness of the problem of classifying Lie algebras $\widetilde V$ with the bracket operation $[u,v]:=uv-vu$. We also prove the wildness of the problem of classifying two-dimensional vector spaces consisting of commuting linear operators on a vector space over a field.
We classify integrable irreducible $\hat{g}[σ]$-modules in categories E and C, where E is proved to contain the well known evaluation modules and C to unify highest weight modules, evaluation modules and their tensor product modules.
We construct a universal continuous invariant bilinear form for the Lie algebra of compactly supported sections of a Lie algebra bundle in a topological sense. Moreover we construct a universal continuous central extension of a current algebra that is the tensor product of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g and a certain topological algebra A. In particular taking A as the compactly supported smooth functions on a sigma-compact manifold M, we obtain a more detailed justification for a recent result of Janssens and Wockel concerning a universal extension for the Lie algebra of compactly support…
Let $L(-{1/2}(l+1),0)$ be the simple vertex operator algebra associated to an affine Lie algebra of type $A_{l}^{(1)}$ with the lowest admissible half-integer level $-{1/2}(l+1)$, for even l. We study the category of weak modules for that vertex operator algebra which are in category $\cal{O}$ as modules for the associated affine Lie algebra. We classify irreducible objects in that category and prove semisimplicity of that category.
Lie quasi-states on a real Lie algebra are functionals which are linear on any abelian subalgebra. We show that on the symplectic Lie algebra of rank at least 3 there is only one continuous non-linear Lie quasi-state (up to a scalar factor, modulo linear functionals). It is related to the asymptotic Maslov index of paths of symplectic matrices.
The author has previously shown that solvable Lie A-algebras and complemented solvable Lie algebras decompose as a vector space direct sum of abelian subalgebras, and their ideals relate nicely to this decomposition. However, neither of these classes is contained in the other. The object of this paper is to find a larger class of algebras, containing each of these classes, in which these same results hold.
In this paper we study the lengths of certain chains of subalgebras of a Lie algebra L: namely, a chief series, a maximal chain of minimal length, a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is modular in L, and a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is a quasi-ideal of L. In particular we show that, over a field of characteristic zero, a Lie algebra L with radical R has a maximal chain of subalgebras and a chain of subalgebras all of which are modular in L of the same length if and only if L = R, or $\sqrt{F} \not \subseteq F$ and L/R is a direct sum of isomorphic three-dim…
We study the reduced Lefschetz module of the complex of p-radical and p-centric subgroups. We assume that the underlying group G has parabolic characteristic p and the centralizer of a certain noncentral p-element has a component with central quotient H a finite group of Lie type in characteristic p. A non-projective indecomposable summand of the associated Lefschetz module lies in a non-principal block of G and it is a Green correspondent of an inflated, extended Steinberg module for a Lie subgroup of H. The vertex of this summand is the defect group of the block in which it lies.
We investigate a certain class of solvable metric Lie algebras. For this purpose a theory of twofold extensions associated to an orthogonal representation of an abelian Lie algebra is developed. Among other things, we obtain a classification scheme for indecomposable metric Lie algebras with maximal isotropic centre and the classification of metric Lie algebras of index 2.
We continue the study in Ben-Shimol [1],[2] and consider a Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak{b}$ and its nil radical $\mathfrak{n}$ of the simple Lie algebras of types $G_2$, $F_4$, $C_n$ over arbitrary field. Let $\mathcal{L}\in\{\mathfrak{n}, \mathfrak{b}\}$. We establish here explicit realizations of the center $Z(\mathcal{L})$ and semi-center $Sz(\mathcal{L})$ of the enveloping algebra, the Poisson center $S(\mathcal{L})^{\mathcal{L}}$ and Poisson semi-center $S(\mathcal{L})^{\mathcal{L}}_{\operatorname{si}}$ of the symmetric algebra. We describe their structure as commutative rings and establis…
An expression is given for the plethysm $p_{2}\circ S_{\square}$, where $p_{2}$ is the power sum of degree two and $S_{\square}$ is the Schur function indexed by a rectangular partition. The formula can be well understood from the viewpoint of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra of type $A_{2}^{(2)}$.
I give the details of some conjectures regarding Schubert calculus in Lie types B and D. Specifically, I conjecture rules for Schubert structure constants $c_{u,v}^w$ when $X_{w_0u}^v$ is a Richardson variety stable under the spherical Levi subgroup $\C^* \times SO(n-2,\C)$ of $SO(n,\C)$.
We develop a new method for obtaining branching rules for affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras at negative integer levels. This method uses fusion rules for vertex operator algebras of affine type. We prove that an infinite family of ordinary modules for affine vertex algebra of type A investigated in Adamović and O. Perše (2008) is closed under fusion. Then we apply these fusion rules on explicit bosonic realization of level -1 modules for the affine Lie algebra of type $A_{\ell-1}^{(1)}$, obtain a new proof of complete reducibility for these representations, and the corresponding decomposition for …
