For every supersingular $K3$ surface $X$ in characteristic 2, there exists a homogeneous polynomial $G$ of degree 6 such that $X$ is birational to the purely inseparable double cover of a projective plane defined by $w^2=G$. We present an algorithm to calculate from $G$ a set of generators of the numerical Néron-Severi lattice of $X$. As an application, we investigate the stratification defined by the Artin invariant on a moduli space of supersingular $K3$ surfaces of degree 2 in characteristic 2.
Let X be a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 5 with Artin invariant 1. Then X has a polarization that realizes X as the Fermat sextic double plane. We present a list of polarizations of X with degree 2 whose intersection number with this Fermat sextic polarization is less than or equal to 5, and give the defining equations of the corresponding projective models. We also present a method to describe birational morphisms between these projective models explicitly. As a by-product, a non-projective automorphism of the Fermat sextic double plane is obtained.
We present three interesting projective models of the supersingular K3 surface X in characteristic 5 with Artin invariant 1. For each projective model, we determine smooth rational curves on X with the minimal degree and the projective automorphism group. Moreover, by using the superspecial abelian surface, we construct six sets of 16 disjoint smooth rational curves on X, and show that they form a beautiful configuration.
Let p be a prime integer, and q a power of p. The Ballico-Hefez curve is a non-reflexive nodal rational plane curve of degree q+1 in characteristic p. We investigate its automorphism group and defining equation. We also prove that the surface obtained as the cyclic cover of the projective plane branched along the Ballico-Hefez curve is unirational, and hence is supersingular. As an application, we obtain a new projective model of the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 3 and 5.
We classifiy Enriques surfaces covered by the supersingular K3 surface with the Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 2. There are exactly three types of such Enriques surfaces.
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
Let $X$ be a smooth proper genus 2 curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. The absolute Frobenius induces a rational map $F$ on the the moduli space $M\_X$ of semi-stable rank 2 vector bundles over $X$, which is isomorphic to a 3-dimensional projective space. Y. Laszlo and C. Pauly recently gave the equations of $F$ for an ordinary $X$. Using deformation, we give these equations for a supersingular $X$ and draw some consequences such as the base locus of $F$ (one point), or the stability of the complementary Zariski open set.
We construct a moduli space of adequately marked Enriques surfaces that have a supersingular K3 cover over fields of characteristic $p \geq 3$. We show that this moduli space exists as a scheme locally of finite type over $\mathbb{F}_p$. Moreover, there exists a period map from this moduli space to a period scheme and we obtain a Torelli theorem for supersingular Enriques surfaces.
In this article we give a strategy to decide whether the logarithm of a given Salem number is realized as entropy of an automorphism of a supersingular K3 surface in positive characteristic. As test case it is proved that $\log λ_d$, where $λ_d$ is the minimal Salem number of degree $d$, is realized in characteristic $5$ if and only if $d\leq 22$ is even and $d\neq 18$. In the complex projective setting we settle the case of entropy $\log λ_{12}$ left open by McMullen, by giving the construction. A necessary and sufficient test is developed to decide whether a given isometry of a hyperbolic la…
Let E be the supersingular elliptic curve defined over k, the algebraic closure of the finite field with two elements, which is unique up to k-isomorphism. Denote by 0 its identity element and let C be the quotient of E-{0} under the action of the group Isom(E) (which is non-abelian, of order 24). The main result of this paper asserts that the set C(k) naturally parametrizes k-isomorphism classes of Lamé covers, which are tamely ramified covers of the projective line unramified outside three points having a particular ramification datum. This fact is surprising for two reasons: first of all, i…
We construct a K3 surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2 which contains two sets of 21 disjoint smooth rational curves such that each curve from one set intersects exactly 5 curves from the other set. This configuration is isomorphic to the configuration of points and lines on the projective plane over the finite field of 4 elements. The surface admits a finite automorphism group which contains the group of automorphisms of the plane which acts on the configuration of each set of 21 smooth rational curves, and the additional element of order 2 which interchanges the two…
Let $\bar{Y}$ be a normal surface that is the canonical $μ_2$- or $α_2$-covering of a classical or supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic $2$. We determine all possible configurations of singularities on $\bar{Y}$, and for each configuration we describe which type of Enriques surfaces (classical or supersingular) appear as quotients of $\bar{Y}$.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
We study the rigid analytic geometry of cyclic coverings of the projective line. We determine the defining equation of a cyclic covering of degree $p$ of the projective line by a Mumford curve over a complete discrete valuation field of positive characteristic $p$. Previously, Bradley studied that of any degree over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
We construct configuration spaces for cyclic covers of the projective line that admit extra automorphisms and we describe the locus of curves with given automorphism group. As an application we provide examples of arbitrary high genus that are defined over their field of moduli and are not hyperelliptic.
We study compact Kähler threefolds X with infinite fundamental group whose universal cover can be compactified. Combining techniques from $L^2$ -theory, Campana's geometric orbifolds and the minimal model program we show that this condition imposes strong restrictions on the geometry of X. In particular we prove that if a projective threefold with infinite fundamental group has a quasi-projective universal cover, the latter is then isomorphic to the product of an affine space with a simply connected manifold.
We consider families of cyclic covers of the projective line, where we fix the covering group and the local monodromies and we vary the branch points. We prove that there are precisely twenty such families that give rise to a special subvariety in the moduli space of abelian varieties. Our proof uses techniques in mixed characteristics due to Dwork and Ogus.
We show that the Davenport-Stothers inequality from characteristic 0 fails in any characteristic p>3. The proof uses elliptic surfaces over the projective line and inseparable base change. We then present adjusted inequalities. These follow from results of Pesenti-Szpiro. For characteristic 2 and 3, we achieve a similar result in terms of the maximal singular fibres of elliptic surfaces over the projective line. Our ideas are also related to supersingular surfaces (in Shioda's sense).
Studying coverings over algebraic varieties is an effective method in algebraic geometry. By combining the technique of triple cover from Miranda and Tan, we proved that if the degree of the branch divisor of a normal triple cover over $¶^2$ is no more than $18$ and not equal to $16$, then the trace-free bundle of the triple cover is uniform. Moreover, we totally classified all these trace-free bundles.
We classify supersingular and classical Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in characteristic 2 into 8 types according to their dual graphs of all $(-2)$-curves (nonsigular rational curves). We give examples of these Enriques surfaces together with their canonical coverings. It follows that the classification of all Enriques surfaces with finite automorphism group in any characteristics has been finished.
In this paper we prove birational superrigidity of finite covers of degree $d$ of the $M$-dimensional projective space of index 1, where $d\geqslant 5$ and $M\geqslant 10$, with at most quadratic singularities of rank $\geqslant 7$, satisfying certain regularity conditions. Up to now, only cyclic covers were studied in this respect. The set of varieties with worse singularities or not satisfying the regularity conditions is of codimension $\geqslant\frac12(M-4)(M-5)+1$ in the natural parameter space of the family.
We define stacks of uniform cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes, proving that they can be realized as quotient stacks of open subsets of representations, and compute the Picard group for the open substacks parametrizing smooth uniform cyclic covers. Moreover, we give an analogous description for stacks parametrizing triple cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes of rank 1, which are not necessarily uniform, and give a presentation of the Picard group for substacks corresponding to smooth triple cyclic covers.
The main aim of this paper is to show that a cyclic cover of $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along a very general divisor of degree $d$ is not stably rational provided that $n \ge 3$ and $d \ge n+1$. This generalizes the result of Colliot-Thélène and Pirutka. Generalizations for cyclic covers over complete intersections and applications to suitable Fano manifolds are also discussed.
Let $p$ and $q$ be odd prime numbers. In this paper we study non-abelian pq-fold regular covers of the projective line, determine algebraic models for some special cases and provide a general isogeny decomposition of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. We also give a classification and description of the one-dimensional families of compact Riemann surfaces as before.
A finite morphism $f:X\to \mathbb P^2$ of a a smooth irreducible projective surface $X$ is called an almost generic cover if for each point $p\in \mathbb P^2$ the fibre $f^{-1}(p)$ is supported at least on $deg(f)-2$ distinct points and $f$ is ramified with multiplicity two at a generic point of its ramification locus $R$. In the article, the singular points of the branch curve $B\subset\mathbb P^2$ of an almost generic cover are investigated and main invariants of the covering surface $X$ are calculated in terms of invariants of the curve $B$.
We study the projective normality of a minimal surface $X$ which is a ramified double covering over a rational surface $S$ with $\dim|-K_S|\ge 1$. In particular Horikawa surfaces, the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2_X=2p_g(X)-4$, are of this type, up to resolution of singularities. Let $π$ be the covering map from $X$ to $S$. We show that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant adjoint divisors $K_X+rπ^*A$ are normally generated, where the integer $r\ge 3$ and $A$ is an ample divisor on $S$.
In this paper, we study the problem of tropicalizing tame degree three coverings of the projective line. Given any degree three covering $C\longrightarrow{\mathbb{P}^{1}}$, we give an algorithm that produces the Berkovich skeleton of $C$. In particular, this gives an algorithm for finding the Berkovich skeleton of a genus $3$ curve. The algorithm uses a continuity statement for inertia groups of semistable Galois coverings, which we prove first. After that we give a formula for the decomposition group of an irreducible component $Γ\subset{\mathcal{C}_{s}}$ for a semistable Galois covering $\ma…
Let $X$ be a general hypersurface of degree $md$ in the weighted projective space with weights $1,1,1,m$ for some for $d\geq 2$ and $m\geq 3$. We prove that the Seshadri constant of the ample generator of the Néron-Severi space at a general point $x\in X$ lies in the interval $\left[\sqrt{d}- \frac d m, \sqrt{d}\right]$ and thus approaches the possibly irrational number $\sqrt d$ as $m$ grows.
Consider a projective manifold X and suppose that some wedge power of the cotangent bundle contains a subsheaf whose determinant bundle has maximal Kodaira dimension. Then we prove that X is of general type. More generally we compute the Kodaira dimension if the determinant bundle has sufficiently large Kodaira dimension. This is based on the study of the determinant bundle of a quotient of the cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled manifold: this bundle is always pseudo-effective. We apply this to study the universal cover of a projective manifold. Finally we prove the following: if the canonical…
We show that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2, homological projective duality for smooth quadric hypersurfaces and for double covers of projective spaces branched over smooth quadric hypersurfaces is a combination of two operations: one interchanges a quadric hypersurface with its classical projective dual and the other interchanges a quadric hypersurface with the double cover branched along it.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We study K3 surfaces with 9 cusps, i.e. 9 disjoint $A_2$ configurations of smooth rational curves, over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $p\neq 3$. Much like in the complex situation studied by Barth, we prove that each such surface admits a triple covering by an abelian surface. Conversely, we determine which abelian surfaces with order three automorphisms give rise to K3 surfaces. We also investigate how K3 surfaces with 9 cusps hit the supersingular locus.
Let $ϕ: X \to \mathbb P^n$ be a double cover branched along a smooth hypersurface of degree $2m, 2 \leq m \leq n-1$. We study the varieties of minimal rational tangents $\mathcal C_x \subset \mathbb P T_x(X)$ at a general point $x$ of $X$. We describe the homogeneous ideal of $\mathcal C_x$ and show that the projective isomorphism type of $\mathcal C_x$ varies in a maximal way as $x$ varies over general points of $X$. Our description of the ideal of $\mathbb C_x$ implies a certain rigidity property of the covering morphism $ϕ$. As an application of this rigidity, we show that any finite morphi…
Special covers are metacyclic covers of the projective line, with Galois group of order pm, which have a specific type of bad reduction to characteristic p. Such covers arise in the study of the arithmetic of Galois covers of the projective line with three branch points. Our results provide a classification of all special covers in terms of certain lifting data in characteristic p.
We provide homological foundations to establish conjectural homological projective dualities between 1) S^2 P^3 and the double cover of the projective 9-space branched along the symmetric determinantal quartic, and 2) S^2 P^4 and the double cover of the symmetric determinantal quintic in the projective 14-space branched along the symmetric determinantal locus of rank at most 3.
In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of quasi-projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of the abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of Abelian varieties by Galois covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. In particular, the resutls we obtain contribute in the construction of Jacobians (of covers of the projective line) of high rank.
We study ramified covers of the projective plane. Given a smooth projective surface S and a generic enough projection of S to the projective plane, we get a cover of the plane ramified over a plane curve. The branch curve is usually singular, but is classically known to have only cusps and nodes as singularities for a generic projection. Several questions arise. First, what is the_geography_ of branch curves among all nodal-cuspidal curves? Second: what is the_geometry_ of branch curves? In other words, how can one distinguish a branch curve from a non-branch curve with the same numerical inva…
