For any partition of $\{1, 2, ..., n\}$ we define its {\it increments} $X_i, 1 \le i \le n$ by $X_i = 1$ if $i$ is the smallest element in the partition block that contains it, $X_i = 0$ otherwise. We prove that for partially exchangeable random partitions (where the probability of a partition depends only on its block sizes in order of appearance), the law of the increments uniquely determines the law of the partition. One consequence is that the Chinese Restaurant Process CRP($θ$) (the partition with distribution given by the Ewens sampling formula with parameter $θ$) is the only exchangeable random partition with independent increments.
We extend the notion of the associated random walk and the Wald martingale in random walks where the increments are independent and identically distributed to the more general case of stationary ergodic increments. Examples are given where the increments are Markovian or Gaussian, and an application in queueing is considered.
In the work asymptotic analysis of the problem of large deviations for random evolutions with independent increments in the circuit of Lévy approximation is carried out. Large deviations for random evolutions in the circuit of Levy approximation are determined by exponential generator for jumping process with independent increments.
We study the asymptotics for the maximum on a random time interval of a random walk with a long-tailed distribution of its increments and negative drift. We extend to a general stopping time a result by Asmussen (1998), simplify its proof, and give some converses.
We consider random walks with independent but not necessarily identical distributed increments. Assuming that the increments satisfy the well-known Lindeberg condition, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of first-passage times over moving boundaries. Furthermore, we prove that a properly rescaled random walk conditioned to stay above the boundary up to time $n$ converges, as $n\to\infty$, towards the Brownian meander.
We study tail behaviour of the distribution of the area under the positive excursion of a random walk which has negative drift and heavy-tailed increments. We determine the asymptotics for tail probabilities for the area.
We describe two classes of Gaussian self-similar random fields: with strictly stationary rectangular increments and with mild stationary rectangular increments. We find explicit spectral and moving average representations for the fields with strictly stationary rectangular increments and characterize fields with mild stationary rectangular increments by the properties of covariance functions of their Lamperti transformations as well as in terms of their spectral densities. We establish that both classes contain not only fractional Brownian sheets and we provide corresponding examples. As a by-…
This paper studies the problem of equivalence of Gaussian measures induced by Gaussian random fields (GRFs) with stationary increments and proves a sufficient condition for the equivalence in terms of the behavior of the spectral measures at infinity. The main results extend those of Stein (2004), Van Zanten (2007, 2008) and are applicable to a rich family of nonstationary space-time models with possible anisotropy behavior.
We continue the line of research of random walks with barrier initiated by Iksanov and M{ö}hle (2008). Assuming that the tail of the step of the underlying random walk has a power-like behavior at infinity with exponent $-α$, $α\in(0,1)$, we prove that the number $V_n$ of zero increments in the random walk with barrier, properly centered and normalized, converges weakly to the standard normal law. This refines previously known weak law of large numbers for $V_n$ proved in Iksanov and Negadailov (2008).

Let F be a distribution function with negative mean and regularly varying right tail. Under a mild smoothness condition we derive higher order asymptotic expansions for the tail distribution of the maxima of the random walk generated by F. An application to ruin probabilities is developed.
We consider asymptotics for the maximum of a modulated random walk whose increments $ξ_n^{X_n}$ are heavy-tailed. Of particular interest is the case where the modulating process $X$ is regenerative. Here we study also the maximum of the recursion given by $W_0=0$ and, for $n\ge1$, $W_n=\max(0,W_{n-1}+ξ_n^{X_n})$
We study the distribution of the maximum $M$ of a random walk whose increments have a distribution with negative mean and belonging, for some $γ>0$, to a subclass of the class $\mathcal{S}_γ$--see, for example, Chover, Ney, and Wainger (1973). For this subclass we give a probabilistic derivation of the asymptotic tail distribution of $M$, and show that extreme values of $M$ are in general attained through some single large increment in the random walk near the beginning of its trajectory. We also give some results concerning the ``spatially local'' asymptotics of the distribution of $M$, the m…
We study asymptotic properties of spatially non-homogeneous random walks with non-integrable increments, including transience, almost-sure bounds, and existence and non-existence of moments for first-passage and last-exit times. In our proofs we also make use of estimates for hitting probabilities and large deviations bounds. Our results are more general than existing results in the literature, which consider only the case of sums of independent (typically, identically distributed) random variables. We do not assume the Markov property. Existing results that we generalize include a circle of i…
We propose a path transformation which applied to a cyclically exchangeable increment process conditions its minimum to belong to a given interval. This path transformation is then applied to processes with start and end at zero. It is seen that, under simple conditions, the weak limit as epsilon tends to zero of the process conditioned on remaining above minus epsilon exists and has the law of the Vervaat transformation of the process. We examine the consequences of this path transformation on processes with exchangeable increments, Lévy bridges, and the Brownian bridge.
Let $X$ be a Lévy process with regularly varying Lévy measure $ν$. We obtain sample-path large deviations for scaled processes $\bar X_n(t) \triangleq X(nt)/n$ and obtain a similar result for random walks. Our results yield detailed asymptotic estimates in scenarios where multiple big jumps in the increment are required to make a rare event happen; we illustrate this through detailed conditional limit theorems. In addition, we investigate connections with the classical large deviations framework. In that setting, we show that a weak large deviation principle (with logarithmic speed) holds, but…
We present a random walk approximation to fractional Brownian motion where the increments of the fractional random walk are defined as a weighted sum of the past increments of a Bernoulli random walk.
We consider a continuous time version of Cramer's theorem with nonnegative summands $ S_t=\frac{1}{t}\sum_{i:τ_i\le t}ξ_i, t \to\infty, $ where $(τ_i,ξ_i)_{i\ge 1}$ is a sequence of random variables such that $tS_t$ is a random process with independent increments.
A catalytic branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice, with arbitrary finite number of catalysts, is studied in supercritical regime. The dynamics of spatial spread of the particles population is examined, upon normalization. The components of the vector random walk jump are assumed independent (or close to independent) and have semi-exponential distributions with, possibly, different parameters. A limit theorem on the almost sure normalized positions of the particles at the population ``front'' is established. Contrary to the case of the random walk increments with ``light'' distrib…
We study sample-path large deviations for Lévy processes and random walks with heavy-tailed jump-size distributions that are of Weibull type. Our main results include an extended form of an LDP (large deviations principle) in the $J_1$ topology, and a full LDP in the $M_1'$ topology. The rate function can be represented as the solution to a quasi-variational problem. The sharpness and applicability of these results are illustrated by a counterexample proving the nonexistence of a full LDP in the $J_1$ topology, and by an application to a first passage problem.
This paper is motivated by relations between association and independence of random variables. It is well-known that for real random variables independence implies association in the sense of Esary, Proschan and Walkup, while for random vectors this simple relationship breaks. We modify the notion of association in such a way that any vector-valued process with independent increments has also associated increments in the new sense --- association between blocks. The new notion is quite natural and admits nice characterization for some classes of processes. In particular, using the covariance i…
Strong approximations of uniform transport processes to the standard Brownian motion rely on the Skorokhod embedding of random walk with centered double exponential increments. In this note we make such an embedding explicit by means of a Poissonian scheme, which both simplifies classic constructions of strong approximations of uniform transport processes (Griego et al. (1971)) and improves their rate of strong convergence (Gorostiza et al. (1980)). We finalise by providing an extension regarding the embedding of a random walk with asymmetric double exponential increments.
We construct examples of a random walk with pairwise-independent steps which is almost-surely bounded, and for any $m$ and $k$ a random walk with $k$-wise independent steps which has no stationary distribution modulo $m$.
Properties of arrival times are studied for a Cox process with independent (and stationary) increments. Under a reasonable setting the directing random measure is shown to take over independent (and stationary) increments of the process, from which the sets of arrival times and their numbers in disjoint intervals are proved to be independent (and stationary). Moreover, we derive the exact joint distribution of these quantities with Gamma random measure, whereas for a general random measure the method of calculation is presented. Based on the derived properties we consider prediction problems f…
We consider a modulated process S which, conditional on a background process X, has independent increments. Assuming that S drifts to -infinity and that its increments (jumps) are heavy-tailed (in a sense made precise in the paper), we exhibit natural conditions under which the asymptotics of the tail distribution of the overall maximum of S can be computed. We present results in discrete and in continuous time. In particular, in the absence of modulation, the process S in continuous time reduces to a Levy process with heavy-tailed Levy measure. A central point of the paper is that we make ful…
We consider weighted sums of independent random variables regulated by an increment sequence. We provide operative conditions that ensure strong law of large numbers for such sums to hold in both the centered and non-centered case. The existing criteria for the strong law are either implicit or assume some sufficient decay for the sequence of coefficients. In our set up we allow for arbitrary sequence of coefficients, possibly random, provided the random variables regulated by such increments satisfy some mild concentration conditions. In the non-centered case, convergence can be translated in…
We are interested in the increment stationarity property for $L^2$-indexed stochastic processes, which is a fairly general concern since many random fields can be interpreted as the restriction of a more generally defined $L^2$-indexed process. We first give a spectral representation theorem in the sense of \citet{Ito54}, and see potential applications on random fields, in particular on the $L^2$-indexed extension of the fractional Brownian motion. Then we prove that this latter process is characterized by its increment stationarity and self-similarity properties, as in the one-dimensional cas…
We prove large deviations principles (LDPs) for the perimeter and the area of the convex hull of a planar random walk with finite Laplace transform of its increments. We give explicit upper and lower bounds for the rate function of the perimeter in terms of the rate function of the increments. These bounds coincide and thus give the rate function for a wide class of distributions which includes the Gaussians and the rotationally invariant ones. For random walks with such increments, large deviations of the perimeter are attained by the trajectories that asymptotically align into line segments.…
We consider a random walk $\tilde S$ which has different increment distributions in positive and negative half-planes. In the upper half-plane the increments are mean-zero i.i.d. with finite variance. In the lower half-plane we consider two cases: increments are positive i.i.d. random variables with either a slowly varying tail or with a finite expectation. For the distributions with a slowly varying tails, we show that $\{\frac{1}{\sqrt n} \tilde S(nt)\}$ has no weak limit in $\De$; alternatively, the weak limit is a reflected Brownian motion.
The aim of this paper is to present a result of discrete approximation of some class of stable self-similar stationary increments processes. The properties of such processes were intensively investigated, but little is known on the context in which such processes can arise. To our knowledge, discretisation and convergence theorems are available only in the case of stable Lévy motions and fractional Brownian motions. This paper yields new results in this direction. Our main result is the convergence of the random rewards schema, which was firstly introduced by Cohen and Samorodnitsky, and that …
The study of random polynomials has a long and rich history. This paper studies random algebraic polynomials $P_n(x) = a_0 + a_1 x + \ldots + a_{n-1} x^{n-1}$ where the coefficients $(a_k)$ are correlated random variables taken as the increments $X(k+1) - X(k)$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, of a fractional Brownian motion $X$ of Hurst index $0< H < 1$. This reduces to the classical setting of independent coefficients for $H = 1/2$. We obtain that the average number of the real zeros of $P_n(x)$ is~$\sim K_H \log n$, for large $n$, where $K_H = (1 + 2 \sqrt{H(1-H)})/π$ (a generalisation of a classical re…
A {\it scenery} is a coloring $ξ$ of the integers. Let $\{S_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ be a recurrent random walk on the integers. Observing the scenery $ξ$ along the path of this random walk, one sees the color $χ_t:=ξ(S_t)$ at time $t$. The {\it scenery reconstruction problem} is concerned with recovering the scenery $ξ$, given only the sequence of observations $χ:=(χ_t)_{t\geq 0}$. The scenery reconstruction methods presented to date require the random walk to have bounded increments. Here, we present a new approach for random walks with unbounded increments which works when the tail of the increment d…
We consider a type of random processes which satisfies the conditional increment condition and obtain an estimate for the tail probability and a Doob-type inequality of the maximum of the process. The main result is that, for processes satisfying the conditional increment condition, the tail probability decay of its maximum behaves in the same way as its marginals.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of sums of functions of the increments of a given semimartingale, taken along a regular grid whose mesh goes to 0. The function of the $i$th increment may depend on the current time, and also on the past of the semimartingale before this time. We study the convergence in probability of two types of such sums, and we also give associated central limit theorems. This extends known results when the summands are a function depending only on the increments, and this is motivated mainly by statistical applications.
In this article we characterise discrete time stationary fields by difference equations involving stationary increment fields and self-similar fields. This gives connections between stationary fields, stationary increment fields and, through Lamperti transformation, self-similar fields. Our contribution is a natural generalisation of recently proved results covering the case of stationary processes.
We consider procedures of sampling parts from a random integer partition. We determine asymptotically the probabilty distribution of the randomly-selected part whenever the positive integer that is partitioned becomes large.
Consider a one dimensional simple random walk $X=(X_n)_{n\geq0}$. We form a new simple symmetric random walk $Y=(Y_n)_{n\geq0}$ by taking sums of products of the increments of $X$ and study the two-dimensional walk $(X,Y)=((X_n,Y_n))_{n\geq0}$. We show that it is recurrent and when suitably normalised converges to a two-dimensional Brownian motion with independent components; this independence occurs despite the functional dependence between the pre-limit processes. The process of recycling increments in this way is repeated and a multi-dimensional analog of this limit theorem together with a …
We obtain a complete description of local anisotropic scaling limits for a class of fractional random fields $X$ on ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ written as stochastic integral with respect to infinitely divisible random measure. The scaling procedure involves increments of $X$ over points the distance between which in the horizontal and vertical directions shrinks as $O(λ)$ and $O(λ^γ)$ respectively as $λ\downarrow 0$, for some $γ>0$. We consider two types of increments of $X$: usual increment and rectangular increment, leading to the respective concepts of $γ$-tangent and $γ$-rectangent random fields. We…
The choice of the increment distribution is crucial for the random-walk Metropolis-Hastings (RWM) algorithm. In this paper we study the optimal choice in high-dimension setting among all possible increment distributions. The conclusion is rather counter intuitive, but the optimal rate of convergence is attained by the usual choice, the normal distribution as the increment distribution. In particular, no heavy-tailed increment distribution can improve the rate.
Plant differently colored points in the plane, then let random points ("Poisson rain") fall, and give each new point the color of the nearest existing point. Previous investigation and simulations strongly suggest that the colored regions converge (in some sense) to a random partition of the plane. We prove a weak version of this, showing that normalized empirical measures converge to Lebesgue measures on a random partition into measurable sets. Topological properties remain an open problem. In the course of the proof, which heavily exploits time-reversals, we encounter a novel self-similar pr…
We prove distributional limit theorems for the length of the largest convex minorant of a one-dimensional random walk with independent identically distributed increments. Depending on the increment law, there are several regimes with different limit distributions for this length. Among other tools, a representation of the convex minorant of a random walk in terms of uniform random permutations is utilized.
For a given sequence of weights (non-negative numbers), we consider partitions of the positive integer n. Each n-partition is selected uniformly at random from the set of all such partitions. Under a classical scheme of assumptions on the weight sequence, which are due to Meinardus (1954), we show that the largest part in a random weighted partition, appropriately normalized, converges weakly, as n tends to infinity, to a random variable having the extreme value (Gumbel's) distribution. This limit theorem extends some known results on particular types of integer partitions and on the Bose-Eins…
Let $(X_1,X_2,...)$ be a random partition of the unit interval $[0,1]$, i.e. $X_i\geq0$ and $\sum_{i\geq1} X_i=1$, and let $(\varepsilon_1,\varepsilon_2,...)$ be i.i.d. Bernoulli random variables of parameter $p \in (0,1)$. The Bernoulli convolution of the partition is the random variable $Z =\sum_{i\geq1} \varepsilon_i X_i$. The question addressed in this article is: Knowing the distribution of $Z$ for some fixed $p\in(0,1)$, what can we infer about the random partition? We consider random partitions formed by residual allocation and prove that their distributions are fully characterised by t…
We propose discrete random-field models that are based on random partitions of $\mathbb{N}^2$. The covariance structure of each random field is determined by the underlying random partition. Functional central limit theorems are established for the proposed models, and fractional Brownian sheets, with full range of Hurst indices, arise in the limit. Our models could be viewed as discrete analogues of fractional Brownian sheets, in the same spirit that the simple random walk is the discrete analogue of the Brownian motion.
We show that for stochastic measures with freely independent increments, the partition-dependent stochastic measures of math.OA/9903084 can be expressed purely in terms of the higher stochastic measures and the higher diagonal measures of the original.
We study the maximal displacement of branching random walks in a class of time inhomogeneous environments. Specifically, binary branching random walks with Gaussian increments will be considered, where the variances of the increments change over time macroscopically. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an $O_P(1)$ (stochastically bounded) error, and focus on the following phenomena: the profile of the variance matters, both to the leading (velocity) term and to the logarithmic correction term, and the latter exhibits a phase transition.
We consider shifts $Π_{n,m}$ of a partially exchangeable random partition $Π_\infty$ of $\mathbb{N}$ obtained by restricting $Π_\infty$ to $\{n+1,n+2,\dots, n+m\}$ and then subtracting $n$ from each element to get a partition of $[m]:= \{1, \ldots, m \}$. We show that for each fixed $m$ the distribution of $Π_{n,m}$ converges to the distribution of the restriction to $[m]$ of the exchangeable random partition of $\mathbb{N}$ with the same ranked frequencies as $Π_\infty$. As a consequence, the partially exchangeable random partition $Π_\infty$ is exchangeable if and only if $Π_\infty$ is stati…
Let ${Z_n}_{n\ge 0}$ be a random walk with a negative drift and i.i.d. increments with heavy-tailed distribution and let $M=\sup_{n\ge 0}Z_n$ be its supremum. Asmussen & Kl{ü}ppelberg (1996) considered the behavior of the random walk given that $M>x$, for $x$ large, and obtained a limit theorem, as $x\to\infty$, for the distribution of the quadruple that includes the time $\rtreg=\rtreg(x)$ to exceed level $x$, position $Z_{\rtreg}$ at this time, position $Z_{\rtreg-1}$ at the prior time, and the trajectory up to it (similar results were obtained for the Cramér-Lundberg insurance risk process)…
The hitting partitions are random partitions that arise from the investigation of so-called hitting scenarios of max-infinitely-divisible (max-i.d.)~distributions. We study a class of max-i.d.~laws with exchangeable hitting partitions obtained by size-biased sampling from the jumps of a Lévy subordinator. We obtain explicit formulae for the distributions of these partitions in the case of the multivariate $α$-logistic and another family of exchangeable max-i.d.\ distributions. Specifically, the hitting partitions for these two cases are shown to coincide with the well-known Poisson--Dirichlet …
For a sequence in discrete time having stationary independent values (respectively, random walk) $X$, those random times $R$ of $X$ are characterized set-theoretically, for which the strict post-$R$ sequence (respectively, the process of the increments of $X$ after $R$) is independent of the history up to $R$. For a Lévy process $X$ and a random time $R$ of $X$, reasonably useful sufficient conditions and a partial necessary condition on $R$ are given, for the process of the increments of $X$ after $R$ to be independent of the history up to $R$.
The lattice of the set partitions of $[n]$ ordered by refinement is studied. Given a map $ϕ: [n] \rightarrow [n]$, by taking preimages of elements we construct a partition of $[n]$. Suppose $t$ partitions $p_1,p_2,\dots,p_t$ are chosen independently according to the uniform measure on the set of mappings $[n]\rightarrow [n]$. The probability that the coarsest refinement of all $p_i$'s is the finest partitions $\{\{1\},\dots,\{n\}\}$ is shown to approach $1$ for any $t\geq 3$ and $e^{-1/2}$ for $t=2$. The probability that the finest coarsening of all $p_i$'s is the one-block partition is shown …
Famously, a $d$-dimensional, spatially homogeneous random walk whose increments are non-degenerate, have finite second moments, and have zero mean is recurrent if $d \in \{1,2\}$ but transient if $d \geq 3$. Once spatial homogeneity is relaxed, this is no longer true. We study a family of zero-drift spatially non-homogeneous random walks (Markov processes) whose increment covariance matrix is asymptotically constant along rays from the origin, and which, in any ambient dimension $d \geq 2$, can be adjusted so that the walk is either transient or recurrent. Natural examples are provided by rand…
We prove a long-standing conjecture which characterises the Ewens-Pitman two-parameter family of exchangeable random partitions, plus a short list of limit and exceptional cases, by the following property: for each $n = 2,3, >...$, if one of $n$ individuals is chosen uniformly at random, independently of the random partition $π_n$ of these individuals into various types, and all individuals of the same type as the chosen individual are deleted, then for each $r > 0$, given that $r$ individuals remain, these individuals are partitioned according to $π_r'$ for some sequence of random partitions …
We construct a new sufficient conditions for boundedness or continuity of arbitrary random fields relying on the so-called partition scheme, alike in the classical majorizing measure method. We deduce also the used in the practice (statistics, method Monte-Carlo etc.) exact exponential estimates for tail of distribution of maximum for random field satisfying formulated in this report conditions.
We show that the "twisted" planar random walk - which results by summing up stationary increments rotated by multiples of a fixed angle - is recurrent under diverse assumptions on the increment process. For example, if the increment process is alpha-mixing and of finite second moment, then the twisted random walk is recurrent for every angle fixed choice of the angle out of a set of full Lebesgue measure, no matter how slow the mixing coefficients decay.
In this paper we continue our study of exit times for random walks with independent but not necessarily identical distributed increments. Our paper "First-passage times for random walks with non-identically distributed increments" was devoted to the case when the random walk is constructed by a fixed sequence of independent random variables which satisfies the classical Lindeberg condition. Now we consider a more general situation when we have a triangular array of independent random variables. Our main assumption is that the entries of every row are uniformly bounded by a constant, which tend…
This article extends the results of Fang & Zeitouni (2012a) on branching random walks (BRWs) with Gaussian increments in time inhomogeneous environments. We treat the case where the variance of the increments changes a finite number of times at different scales in [0,1] under a slight restriction. We find the asymptotics of the maximum up to an OP(1) error and show how the profile of the variance influences the leading order and the logarithmic correction term. A more general result was independently obtained by Mallein (2015b) when the law of the increments is not necessarily Gaussian. Howeve…
